After Anna Briley kicked her boyfriend out of their east Nashville home, the jilted lover took out his frustrations on her pet pig, "Bacon Bit."
Houston had claimed self-defense and said the pig was "messing with his bike and tried to bite him," according to a police report. Police were called to the couple's home at 2614 Flamingo Drive by someone reporting that Briley was gone and Houston was beating the pig in the head and spraying water in its ear with a hose. When police arrived, Bacon Bit was lying motionless on the floor, wet and bleeding with abrasions over its entire body.
Bacon Bit survived the attack.
Houston, in exchange for his deal with prosecutors, was allowed to plead guilty to a misdemeanor animal cruelty charge. He was originally charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony. He has to serve 11 months and 29 days of probation, take anger management classes and perform 20 hours of community service.
He also was ordered to stay away from Briley and Bacon Bit.
First he was missing and now he is gone. Mayor Robert W. Levy of Atlantic City resigned effective today. The city learned Tuesday why and where Mr. Levy took an indefinite medical leave, putting this resort city in municipal limbo for nearly two weeks. He has been under investigation by federal officials regarding his military service in Vietnam.
Mr. Levys lawyer, Edwin J. Jacobs, said today during a televised news conference that Mr. Levys medical problems plus the investigation made it impossible for him to stay in office. Mr. Levy has concluded that public confidence is so eroded by these circumstances that the only responsible action is to step down, Mr. Jacobs said. He does so with great regret and with apologies to his supporters, to the people of Atlantic City, and to his family and friends.
In his resignation letter to the city clerk, Mr. Levy said he had been trying to resolve his differences with the Veterans Administration and the federal government, but whatever the outcome, I am no longer able to discharge my duties as mayor.
Did he return the city's SUV?
Mr. Jacobs said on Tuesday that Mr. Levy had been home for almost a week, and that he had spent the week before in a clinic that specializes in treating substance abuse and depression.

The United States attorney for New Jersey, Christopher J. Christie, is investigating whether Mr. Levy used the misrepresentation to collect larger payments under his military pension.

PLYMOUTH, Ind. A fourth-grade teacher's aide resigned after he was accused of trying to staple a piece of paper to a student's forehead.
Plymouth school district Superintendent John Hill would not identify the aide or the class at Jefferson Elementary School. "We're just sorry that it happened," Hill said Wednesday night. "We don't expect our people to behave in that manner. That person is no longer employed by the school corporation."
Principal Bob Remenih said he could not comment on a student or personnel matter. But Natalie Wilson, the fourth-grader's mother, told the South Bend Tribune that the principal called her shortly before her daughter got on the school bus Monday, more than three hours after the incident occurred. "I should have been told immediately," Wilson told the newspaper. Wilson said her daughter told her she had picked up a Post-It note from the floor and stuck it to her forehead. The aide told her to remove the paper from her forehead or he would staple it there permanently. When the student failed to remove the paper, the aide approached her with a stapler and pushed it against her forehead, Wilson said.
There were "two holes in her head," the mother said. "It actually punctured her skin. This was not an accident."

They need to do a better job of vetting the people who either teach, administer or work as helpers at schools. Fingerprinting is mandatory in Catholic schools now, even for the parents if they want to help out. That's a start but I guess there will always be a few idiots we miss.

Supermarket shoppers may soon be cruising the aisles with "intelligent" trolleys that warn them if they're buying too much junk food, technology experts say.
They have something like this at the local mart we shop at: only the plasma screen simply pushes advertising and 'healthy eating' tips. I still want to dump the whole thing into the frozen food bin and leave it amisdt the cans of OJ.
While many would be happy enough if they could simply get their trolley to go in a straight line, the high-tech model will be fitted with a computer screen and barcode scanner. It will read each product's individual code to give customers information about calories, nutrition, ethical sourcing and the environment.
U.S. technology services company EDS outlined the concept in a study paper published this week. It said the screens would reduce the need for lots of packaging for food, helping stores to tackle environmental concerns.
Good idea. We've spent 100 years figuring out how to package food to keep it from spoiling. Let's throw all that away.
"Shoppers want barcode readers on their trolleys to calculate the nutritional content and tell them when they have blown their calorific budget," said EDS's Sion Roberts, director of consumer industries and retail.
First thing I want to know when I've got a big spoon in the chocolate-chip cookie dough ice cream is exactly when I've blown my 'caloric budget', so I know that I can keep going.
"It's high-time that the humble barcode is recognized as a practical and cost-effective solution to consumers' thirst for information."
Mind you, the consumer information was already listed on the ... packaging. Which we'll no longer have.

I remember a 'Candid Camera'-type show, in which they pranked people at the gas pump by continuing to increment the pump after they had stopped pumping, and they couldn't make it stop.
Bad idea. People went red with rage, and fists were flying. It did not stop when they were told that it was just a prank and their gas was free--they wanted to hurt somebody. Big men, small women, it didn't matter. It had crossed the line.
If some shopping cart starts telling me not to buy something, it is going to be a broken shopping cart real quick.

I call Bulls*t! Shoppers want no such thing. Ever notice how the scanners no longer tell the world the item you just bought? Now they just shout out the price, and even that gets complaints. Shopping technology is already too nosy. The first grocers that adopt this would find an unsustainable rate of "failure" on these carts.

Just another step toward the P.C. "food police" being implemented. I wouldn't mind a bar code scanner at all, but ONLY for the purpose of telling me what my running total cost will be at checkout.

This will only spurn a whole new line of anti-intelligent trolley zappers (like they have for cell phones) so that fat people can shop without guilt. They are un-locking the SIM cards on iPhones over in Europe and selling them for up to Euro 900 even though the buyers know that the next upgrad is unlikely to work on their unlocked phone. I expect the same thing with the grocery cart.

xb, at least *that* system is there to keep folks from stealing the physical carts (an epidemic by my house). My worry is that the system will be programmed to lock up if you buy "too many calories" or "too much unsaturated fat".

Why the heck do consumers even have choices? The government knows best what is good for them. The proles should show up at the commissary, be issued their daily ration, and shut up. There are too many choices, many of them bad. It would be better if there were only healthy foods on the shelves.

One thing you guys are forgetting is that stores don't want to buy this crap. Take a wild guess at the cost of a cart, even one made of mostly plastic. Now throw on a computer, scanner and a plasma screen? No store wanting to keep their slim profit margin is going to waste capital buying these things.

Appalling standards of care and a catalogue of failures contributed to the deaths of 331 patients in the worst outbreak of a hospital superbug ever recorded in the NHS, a report has found. Crowded wards, a shortage of nurses and financial problems led to 1,176 people contracting Clostridium difficile over two and half years at three hospitals in Kent. Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary today described the failures as a "scandal", and said he would send the damning report to all hospital bosses in Britain so lessons would be learned.
Though the superbug was rife on the wards, managers failed to act. Isolation units were not set up, nurses were so rushed they did not have time to wash their hands and patients were left in soiled beds. Bedpans were not decontaminated properly and beds were not cleaned as well as they should have been. The health watchdog, the Healthcare Commission, concluded that the infection probably or definitely killed at least 90 patients and was a factor in the deaths of a further 241. Fourteen patients who died were found to have C.diff but it did not contribute to their deaths. In total 345 people died with the infection.
Mr Johnson told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the Kent outbreak was an isolated incident, and not the result of hospital staff becoming preoccupied by Government targets. "To suggest that in this particular incident, this reflects what's happening in the NHS across the country is absolutely wrong," he said.
"There are nurses and clinicians across the country who have dealt with the targets... but kept the highest safety standards."
The report said some patients at the hospitals run by the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Hospital Trust should have made a full recovery from their initial illness. But they caught the bug and died. Police will determine if there are grounds for criminal charges.
In May 2004 the chief executive of the trust, Rose Gibb, told the BBC she had known about the cleanliness problem for six months. But by September last year the hospitals were in the grip of their second outbreak. Ms Gibb resigned on Friday before the release of the report. The commission found cases where the patient probably died as a result of their C.diff infection but it was not mentioned on the death certificate. The number of people who died also turned out to be far higher than declared to the media and the commission.
Last week the chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, wrote to all doctors telling them to ensure hospital infections were routinely included on death certificates. Gordon Brown has announced a raft of measures to improve cleanliness in the NHS. The commission report said managers at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells trust were too focused on hitting Government targets and were cutting nursing staff and closing beds to balance the books, contributing to the problem.
The first of two outbreaks affected 150 patients between October and December 2005. Even though the number of new cases doubled, managers did not notice. A further 258 patients contracted C.diff in a second outbreak from April to September 2006 but an isolation ward to care for infected patients was not set up until four months into the outbreak. At the time of the outbreaks, the trust was carrying out a programme to save £40 million over three years and the report said there was intense pressure to reduce beds. It ended last year almost £5 million in the red.
The care of patients once they had contracted the infection was poor, they were given unsuitable medication and were often dehydrated or underfed. The shadow health secretary, Andrew Lansley, said: "Centrally imposed waiting list targets have become such a burden on hospital staff that they have less time and fewer resources to protect patients."
Dr Malcolm Stewart, the medical director of Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, said infection control had improved dramatically in the last six months.
He said: "We are sorry about what happened and are determined to continue to reduce levels of the infection."

Just a couple years back, a opinion section writer in the Wall Street Journal chronicled his and his wife's experience with British hospitals when she suffered a heart attack during a vacation there. He compared and contrasted the care she received in the follow on care at American hospitals upon their return. Each had their pluses and minuses. One thing that drew comment was the less than 'Pasteur' cleanliness of the British facilities. Guys, this a a basic health lesson from the 19th Century. It's a simple protocol. Yet, the "professionals" [on both sides of the Atlantic] don't seem to get it. Cause it's been just a month since a report on American doctors and health personnel failing to engage in simple hand washing between patients. I guess in the era of super duper drugs and ever increasing insurance, it's too much of a bother. Of course the dead will never know.
When I lived in the UK I had private insurance and used it agressively for some minor surgery. I got to pick the hospital and surgeon based on quality, schedule, etc. Got in and got out but that is not the normal rule for NHS folks.

The Enquirer reported that a friend says the woman told her, The affair started about 18 months ago. When they met at a bar, sparks flew immediately. She never expected it would turn sexual since John is married and is running for president. But it soon did - and she fell for him.
The friend said the woman said she knew there was no way he was going to leave Elizabeth, a wife battling cancer. Elizabeth Edwards was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and last March announced it had returned. She kept campaigning, speaking out in her husbands defense against political attacks.
The Enquirer claims possession of a bombshell e-mail in which the woman confessed to a friend shes in love with John, but its difficult because he is married and has kids. In another e-mail, the Enquirer said she wrote: Last night and this a.m., he actually has amazed me. He is a great man. My heart is loud and my head is silenced. But the womans friend said both she and John began to feel real guilty and they decided to end it.

I also hope someone gets curious about who tipped of the Enquirer about this. I'm not a gambling man, but I'd lay money down that the Hillary! campaign was the source.
If Edwards sinks or disappears, does it benefit Hillary? You'd think no--she doesn't want a clarified head-to-head race against Obama. But Obama is counting on Edwards to do the dirty work of taking Hillary on. ... The ideal outcome for Obama would be if Edwards loses most of his support yet stays in the race long enough to go on the attack.

If this story is in fact true, or if another candidate turns out to be a cad, then the candidate should withdraw from the race.
This issue reminds me of the Gary Hart campaign in 1988. I remember when Hart got caught in Monkey Business, people wondered what the big deal was, why adultery should make him enelgible for office.
Well, if he can't keep it zipped, he's a lousy security risk.
If he's willing to do something out of selfishness that may result in public humiliation for his family, including the woman he's sworn to love and protect and cherish, then he doesn't have the character to serve the public.

Christian residents of Hadyara village on the outskirts of Lahore fear their church will be razed by a growing Muslim mob angry that Christian prayers were aired by loudspeaker during Fajr prayers on Wednesday.
Christian villagers say young men armed with steel bars and guns stormed the New Apostolic Church, established before Partition, in the morning. They beat up worshippers including a child and damaged property, and alleged that announcements were made through mosque loudspeakers asking Muslims from nearby villages for a final attack. Other announcements urged businesses and farmers not to allow Christians on to their properties.
Public representatives and local police at the scene have been able so far to stop such an attack, and more policemen were reported to have been sent to Hadyara on Wednesday night.
Union Council 65 Nazim Maqsood Ahmad said he and other public representatives had visited the area and tried to calm people on both sides.
The Human Liberation Commission of Pakistan condemned the incident and urged senior Lahore police officials to protect the Christians.
Senior police officials denied knowledge of the incident.

A retired air vice-marshal of the Pakistan Air Force, Chaudhry Lateef Kamra, was shot dead Wednesday by a single unidentified accused outside of his office.
Kamra, 78, retired around 20 years ago from the Air Force and started working as the director of Jason Construction Company.Clifton Town Police Officer (TPO) Azad Khan told Daily Times that Kamra had disputes with people from other companies and also with people who purchased land or property from the deceaseds company. It could have been one of these people, the TPO said. Kamra left his house, located in DHA Phase V, as usual and got to his office in Phase II around 11:00 a.m., said Khan. Kamra sustained four bullet wounds and died on the spot. According to some witnesses, the accused was alone and appeared around 25 to 35 years old. He was on a motorcycle and was standing near Kamras office when Kamra got there. He fled on his motorcycle after opening fire. Kamras body was taken to JPMC. FIR No. 387/07 has been lodged against the unidentified accused on behalf of the deceaseds daughter, Dr Samina.

Three women have been hurt by falling into Tate Modern's latest installation - a crack in the floor. At 548 feet long, up to three feet deep and 10inches wide, it zigzags the length of the Turbine Hall and has been described as a highly original work of art. But visitors have already paid the price for failing to heed warning signs. And a builder said if he had been responsible for the crack he would be sued for health and safety breaches.
One young woman had to be dragged out by friends after falling into the crack in the floor but was otherwise unharmed. A few minutes later, another visitor to the gallery, who thought the crack was painted, also fell in - this time injuring her wrist.
One observer said: "Instead of art imitating life, here it's threatening life."

Colombian artist Doris Salcedo's work Shibboleth, nick-named Doris's crack, is the latest controversial installation in the Tate's massive Turbine Hall. The 550ft crack runs along the length of the floor in Tate Modern's Turbine Hall. It starts as a hairline fracture and widens to about a foot across. . . .
