-Lurid Crime Tales-
Gotti Sez Feds Put Him in Danger
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - John "Junior" Gotti lashed out at the government, saying a report that he has cooperated with investigators put him and his family at risk—including the danger that he might "get one in my head."

"My family lives in fear as a result of that," the son of late Gambino crime family boss John Gotti said Tuesday. He was apparently referring to a New York Post story last year in which unidentified sources said he had considered becoming an informant and had told prosecutors about crimes he and others had committed.

Gotti, who was on trial when the story was published, said an FBI agent was behind the claim—which he denied—and "should be brought up on charges." "What happens next?" he asked. "Does it make it all better if I get one in my head? ... Does it make it all better if I'm found in the street?"

He offered to take a lie detector test on live television if the agent were charged. FBI spokesman James Margolin declined comment.

Gotti spoke after a hearing in White Plains federal court on an unrelated tax matter. Probation officials claim Gotti violated the terms of his 2005 release from prison after serving six years for extortion by failing to pay $202,364.17 in taxes.

Judge Stephen Robinson had previously forbidden the Probation Department from sharing Gotti's financial information with criminal prosecutors.

On Tuesday, prosecutors requested free access, claiming Gotti had lied on some forms. But Robinson refused, saying probation officers must first show the judge that they have reason to believe a particular document might asked been filled out falsely. Gotti could be sent back to prison if the judge determines he violated the terms of his release by not paying taxes.

Gotti's lawyer, Charles Carnesi, predicted outside court that even if Gotti were found to be in violation, any prison term would be suspended because of jail time Gotti served during unsuccessful prosecutions.

Gotti was tried three times in Manhattan on racketeering charges for an alleged plot to kidnap Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa. The trials in 2005 and 2006 ended in hung juries and mistrials, and federal prosecutors announced a year ago that they were giving up.

However, Carnesi pointed out another Post story from Monday that reported, again from unidentified sources, that Gotti was likely to be charged with at least five murders thanks to "Mafioso pals" trying to get leniency.
The famed mob code of honor.
"We don't expect that there will be any charges, and if in fact somebody is so misguided as to bring charges on the basis of liars and murderers who are looking to get themselves out of jail, then we'll address them at that time and we have every confidence that we'll be successful as we have been in the past," Carnesi said.

If someone in the prosecutors' office started a rumor like that, I have only one thing to say:

French police detain 'drag queen' over 18 gay murders
French police have detained a 68-year-old man -- reported to be a 'drag queen' performer -- suspected of murdering 18 mainly homosexual men, a judicial source said Wednesday.
The murders were committed between 1980 and 2002 in eastern France and the Paris region.

Detained Tuesday in the eastern city of Mulhouse, the man was being held in nearby Montbeliard along with another suspect who is already serving a murder sentence in a Paris jail, the source said.

Both men deny the accusations, according to the prosecution, which said it had "no formal proof" of their guilt at this stage.

L'Alsace newspaper said the key suspect worked as a female impersonator and that his arrest followed a two-year investigation by a Montbeliard police officer, who spotted his name in database files relating to a string of unsolved murders.

Most of the murders took place in the Alsace and France-Comte regions and three were in the Paris area. Several other people are being questioned in connection with the case, the source added.

The victims were killed by a violent blow to the head, followed by multiple stabbings. Each time the bodies were found partly naked, but the victims' faces were covered up.

Local prosecutors are to hold a press conference Thursday on the case.

#2  Perhaps off-topic, JFM. But it is definitely a lurid crime tale. And how many times have the europeans claimed that the US is so crime-ridden. They seems to have quite a few serial killers themselves lately.

Pig heads on wooden stakes dumped at Muslim school site
TWO pigs' heads have been dumped at the controversial site of a proposed Islamic school in Sydney's southwest. The pigs' heads, planted on wooden stakes on the Camden site, with the Australian flag draped between them, are believed to be in protest of the Muslim school proposal.

The proposed school, for up to Muslim 1200 students on 15ha and wedged between market gardens and pastures, has been highly controversial.

A public meeting held in Camden earlier this month attracted more than 2000 people opposed to the development. The local council also received several thousand written objections during the planning approval process.

The chairman of the Community Relations Commission, Stepan Kerkyasharian, said today's "outrage" revealed what lay behind the opposition to the school. "This insult and display of hatred is not something any fair-minded Australian would approve of," Mr Kerkyasharian said. "The obsessive hatred of the mindless bigots who perpetrated this outrage is evidenced by their total disrespect of the ultimate symbol of our national pride, the Australian flag.

"Every Australian Muslim would be offended by such a display, especially one involving the Australian flag."

Mr Kerkyasharian said local residents with legitimate concerns about the impact of the development should condemn the action.

Camden Mayor Chris Patterson said the offensive protest was futile. "The council will only and can only assess this DA (development application) on planning grounds, nothing else," Mr Patterson said on Macquarie radio. "Anything like that which happened last night is not acceptable and will not influence council's decision."

The CRC has offered the council its assistance in resolving the community tension.

#1  Comments remind me of home. Why are we wasting money on - fill in the blank - when there are so many needy people at home. Obviously this is proof that the - government, President, Prime Minister, World-at-Large - doesn't really care about anyone else.

Basically, I don't understand it, and (therefore)everybody else is an idiot. Some things are universal.

#2  Bobby: People are perfectly capable of understanding $60m for museum building in Mongolia is a waste of money. Your comment reminds me of home. There are plenty of people in Canada who are ready to sneer if the mere people complain their money is being pissed away.
Posted by: Excalibur || 11/28/2007 9:24 Comments || Top||

#3  Excalibur, I just read the article.

The museum in question isn't in Mongolia. It's in "Inner Mongolia," which is part of China.
Posted by: Abdominal Snowman || 11/28/2007 11:02 Comments || Top||

#4  It also goes to show that the concept of "one step improvement" was missed. This is the idea that if you wish to assist a backwards people, the best aid you can give them is an idea, simple and easy for them to understand, that will improve their lot.

An excellent example of this was in rural India, where people made pottery with *hand* turned spinning wheels. As "aid", all they needed was to be shown a *foot* turned spinning wheel.

It was a flash of inspiration that every one of them instantly grasped as a better way of making pottery. From that moment, every pottery maker in the village immediately set to make his own foot turned spinning wheel. Their productivity tripled overnight. As did their income and prosperity.

With $60M, the Canadians could have slowly introduced dozens of such improvements to the area, that the locals would understand completely at first glance, and would quickly become essential technology to them. Once discovered, there would be no reason to do things the old way.

But one step at a time.
