#4  Perusing Illinois firearms laws, I find that there is no carry allowed (concealed or open) of handguns in public areas or in vehicles. Transportation in vehicles requires that the weapon must be unloaded and locked up. Some suburbs have outlawed handguns. So the perpetrator of the shooting murders also violated Illinois gun laws, FWIW, and the law abiding citizens are helpless.

#5  The mall is about two miles from where I live. I have shopped at this mall frequently. There's a Best Buy and an Office Depot there along with a Target and some other big box stores.

The Lane Bryant store sits in its own part of the mall complex. Fairly large but not like the Best Buy.

I had planned to go to the mall today (need a new internal hard drive and Best Buy is usually where I start). I had gone to my barber's first, and she told me about the shooting.

As far as I know the mall is not firearms-free.

What I don't understand is why anyone would rob a Lane Bryant. Most of the receipts at a big box store are credit; most of the big cash taken in gets moved to the back at regular intervals. Not likely the registers would have a lot of cash.

Very sad.

CBS reporter's apartment burglarized
Willam Katz

CBS reporter Lesley Stahl's apartment has been burglarized. I'll wait while you call your friends to tell them. The hard, cruel facts:

The brazen bandit stole several diamond watches, a pearl necklace, earrings, and gold and silver necklaces in the heist last Friday, cops said.

Okay. How soon will it be on "60 Minutes"? How soon will we hear Lesley say:

I was shocked. I felt violated. But I soon got to know the man who did it, and I came to understand his life, his dreams, his fears. Is prison really the place for a man like this? Are my little trinkets worth his freedom? I'm anguishing over it.

Don't bet on that, friends. Don't bet on it.

(Yikes!) Swimmers warned at beaches after spill of 2.7 million gallons of Marin County sewage
(02-01) 17:06 PST MILL VALLEY -- About 2.7 million gallons of both raw and treated sewage overflowed from a Marin County treatment facility into San Francisco Bay after an alert system failed to properly notify workers at the facility, officials said today.

Signs have been posted along the Tiburon shoreline and at many popular San Francisco beaches - including Crissy Field, Baker Beach, Aquatic Park and China Beach - to discourage people from swimming in the water. However, San Francisco officials said they do not belive the spill will pose a danger to swimmers. Commercial fishing is also not expected to be affected.

Nearby cities and counties were notified of the spill starting late this morning and into the afternoon. Notifications weren't sent to the media until just before 1 p.m. - nearly 20 hours after the spill occurred Thursday evening.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Pamela Anderson to perform at Paris Crazy Horse cabaret
Canadian actress Pamela Anderson will be taking to the Paris stage at the Crazy Horse cabaret club, famous for its nude set pieces. The former Baywatch star, 40, will perform on two nights in a number inspired by the song Harley Davidson from French singer Serge Gainsbourg.

A Crazy Horse spokesperson would not say whether the actress would be required to bare all. "We're going to have to talk to Pamela about that," the spokesperson said.

"The Crazy Horse has always been about, 'You think you see everything, [but] you see nothing,"' she added when talking to AP news agency.

The celebrated Paris cabaret began inviting top female stars to join its regular performers last year. Anderson follows in the footsteps of French actress Arielle Dombasle and Burlesque performer Dita von Teese. Her four shows at the Crazy Horse will be on 13 and 14 February.

Afghanistan
Tempers flare in dispute over display of ancient artifacts
KABUL (NNI): Decades of war have decimated much of Afghanistan's ancient heritage. Many historic architectural gems have been damaged or destroyed, and national treasures have been looted from museums or vandalized by the Taliban. Amid the destruction, one Afghan expatriate has amassed a private collection containing thousands of artifacts -- some dating back thousands of years. Ahmad Shah Sultani considers himself to be a savior of Afghanistan's cultural heritage.

Though he has never learned to read or write, Sultani says he amassed a fortune and became an expert on Afghan artifacts as an antiquities dealer in Pakistan and London. The former goldsmith's apprentice also says that he has spent millions of dollars during the past three decades for the 15,000 artifacts in his collection -- buying from other antiques dealers in Europe, Iran, Pakistan, and Dubai.

"I can't estimate any value for these pieces. Just the number of pieces," Sultani told RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan. "They are priceless because these are ancient and no amount of money can replace them."

Police official arrested in Rosarito assassination attempt
Fun and games south of the border
A top municipal police officer being investigated for participating in an assassination attempt of the city's director of public safety was taken into custody Friday by Mexican soldiers. Jose Luis Lugo Baez had been serving as a deputy commander of Rosarito Beach's 149-member police department. According to a statement from Baja California's Second Military Zone, the policeman was taken into custody after soldiers searching his house seized a package of marijuana, chargers for automatic weapons, police uniforms, and numerous bullets.
charger for auto weapons??
Among the identification cards seized were a California driver's license with a Chula Vista address and a U.S. permanent resident card.

Lugo Baez, 32, is among 13 police officers in Rosarito Beach being investigated by federal authorities in connection with the Dec. 18 assassination attempt on Jorge Eduardo Montero, the top public safety official in this city of 130,000 residents. Lugo Baez is also suspected of a series of other crimes, including kidnapping, homicide, and protection of organized crime, the statement said.
Not quite Officer Friendly, is he?
Rosarito's entire department was disarmed on Dec. 28, allowing investigators to check whether any weapons were used in the commission of a crime. Since then, state and federal police have been patrolling the city.

At a news conference earlier Friday night at a Tijuana military base, Gen. Sergio Aponte Polito, commander of the Second Military Zone, said that a tip from a citizen had led to the officer's detention, and he urged more people to come forward.
that could be hazardous...
Flanked by two soldiers wearing masks and carrying automatic weapons, Lugo Baez shook his head and smiled as he stood and listened to the accusations.
Badges? I don't have to show you no steenking badges!

#2  charger for auto weapons??

No, a "Charger" is a device to load magazines faster and with less effort, it's really useful for loading when you have either multiple magazines, or a very large magazine (As used in machine pistols and some machine guns) a different kind of "Charger" is used to lace up belts, as used in the .30 and .50 machine guns.

It's a very limited-use tool, not usually found outside of a Military Armory. it's very posession implies that you intend to fire a very large ammount of ammo. (Revolution?)

Withdraw marks as criteria for SC/ST scholarships: CPI(M)
The CPI(M) sought withdrawal of government's reported decision to set the criteria of 60 pc marks for scheduled caste and tribe students to get post-metric scholarships, saying it was against the norms of social justice.

"The Finance Ministry and Planning Commission who are instrumental in pushing for this decision are trying to impose their flawed understanding to cut subsidies, in this instance at the cost of dalit and tribal students," the party Politburo said in a statement on Saturday.

Observing that the percentage of such students in professional institutions was already "dismally low", it said such a decision was "against the norms of social justice" and would "lead to further marginalisation" of students belonging to the oppressed sections.

Demanding withdrawal of the decision, the party urged the government to bring an appropriate central legislation to bring private institutions under social control in key areas like fees and admissions.

In this context, CPI(M) Politburo member and MP Brinda Karat on Saturday met Social Justice Minister Meira Kumar and raised the issue.

She was accompanied by a team of leaders of the Students Federation of India (SFI).

"This is part of the government's drive to enforce subsidy cuts which will be at the cost of the dalit and tribal students. It is highly objectionable," she said and demanded reversal of the decision.

Iraq
NFL: Elam to visit U.S. troops in Iraq, watch Super Bowl
Jason Elam, a former Hawaii kicker and all-pro with the Denver Broncos, will visit United States troops in Iraq from Jan. 28 to Feb. 8, on a goodwill military Super Sunday Tour in celebration of the Super Bowl. "I jumped at the opportunity to participate in this visit to Iraq," says Elam, who played for UH from 1989-92. "I have a brother in the Army and have nothing but respect for the men and women serving overseas. This seemed like a great way to express my support firsthand."

Organized by Pro Sports MVP, Elam will be joined on the 10-day tour by Oakland Raiders wide receiver Tim Dwight, former Oakland Raiders offensive guard Steve Wisniewski, and Minnesota Vikings cheerleaders Sarah Johnson and Krisandra Shimpa. The tour group will watch the New England Patriots play the New York Giants with troops in the wee hours of the morning in Iraq.

Elam, who recently released his first novel "Monday Night Jihad" co-authored with Steve Yohn, will be signing copies of his book during the tour. Elam's novel has a strong military theme as the central character Riley Covington is an Air Force Academy graduate who fulfills his military commitment serving in Air Forces Special Ops in Afghanistan and then goes on to play professional football. A terrorist attack on his home turf pulls Covington back into his Special Ops life. Elam based the character on former Air Force graduates Steve Russ, Chad Henning and Chis Gizzi. Elam will write a blog and post pictures from the tour here.

Science & Technology
Blue-eyed folk are genetic mutant freaks kinda special
“Originally, we all had brown eyes”, said Prof Hans Eiberg from the University of Copenhagen, who led the team.
Frank Sinatra, Stephen Hawking, Marie Curie and Stephen Fry all owe their blue eyes to a genetic mutation that likely occurred between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago, researchers say.

Scientists believe they have tracked down the cause of the eye colour of all blue-eyed humans on the planet today. “Originally, we all had brown eyes”, said Prof Hans Eiberg from the University of Copenhagen, who led the team.

Blue eye colour most likely originated from the near east area or northwest part of the Black Sea region, where the great agriculture migration to the northern part of Europe took place in the Neolithic periods about six–10,000 years ago. “That is my best guess,” he said. “It could be the northern part of Afghanistan.”
"Hell if I know," he added.
The mutation affected a gene called OCA2 and “literally 'turned off' the ability to produce brown eyes”, he says. OCA2 is involved in the production of melanin, the pigment that gives colour to hair, eyes and skin. The mutation in the adjacent gene does not switch off the OCA gene entirely but limits its action, reducing the production of melanin in the iris of the eye – “diluting” brown eyes to blue.

If the OCA2 gene had been completely turned off, those who inherited this mutation would be without melanin in their hair, eyes or skin colour - albino.

For the study, Prof Eiberg’s team examined DNA in blue-eyed individuals in countries as diverse as Jordan, India, Denmark and Turkey. His findings are the latest in a decade of genetic research, which began in 1996, when Prof Eiberg first implicated the OCA2 gene as being one of those responsible for eye colour. “They have all inherited the same switch at exactly the same spot in their DNA. From this we can conclude that all blue-eyed individuals are linked to the same ancestor,” said Prof Eiberg, who reports the work in the journal Human Genetics.

#7  My first wife had the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen, same color as the autumn sky. Unfortunately that was her only redeeming feature. She once threatened to leave me if I got fat. I didn't, but she left me for someone with (temporarily) higher income anyway, and promptly gained 100 pounds.
Upon learning this, my second wife christened her "Jabba the Slutt" and I have habitually referred to her as "Jabba" ever since.

YOU MARRIED HER TOO! Jeebus this is a very small world! :)

#12  How exciting to know that it was a single mutation, although the time bracket is a bit broader than is usually determined by this kind of research, I would think. This doesn't say whether the mutation happened only once (doubtful), but only that the other occurrences were not preserved through successful survival of descendants to the present. This kind of research is pretty common these days; someone traced the male line of Cohens (the high priests of the Temple in Jerusalem, they also have names like Kahn, Spahn, Cain) to a single man who lived at the time the Hebrews supposedly wandered out of Egypt. I don't recall whether they were able to determine if his name was Aaron, though, which is disappointing.
