Presumably, the Armed Forces of Ukraine crossed the Seversky Donets river, and went to the villages in the vicinity of the city, deciding to attack the right flank of the Izyum grouping of the RF Armed Forces.

At this point they are effectively encircled. Most are lower quality and militia-level troops, and a lot of support and logistics troops since it was a major supply hub for that region
Some "news" reporting is extremely biased in one direction (Daily Mail) or another (countless!). This is definitely one time I wish I had access to the message traffic I used to take for granted.
