[Globe&Mail] On his Ukrainian military identification, Robert Semrau looks older and greyer than the last time he served in an army, more than a dozen years ago. But even at age 49, this Canadian with a set jaw and steely gaze was ready to fight.
That, in the end, was all that mattered to the Ukrainian military intelligence officers charged with screening foreigners looking to enlist in the International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine, an assortment of fighters from around the globe helping to resist the Russian invasion. Mr. Semrau’s controversial background – he was dishonourably discharged from the Canadian military for shooting and killing an injured Taliban fighter in Afghanistan in 2008 – apparently didn’t matter to the Ukrainians back in June when Mr. Semrau enlisted.
Mr. Semrau’s military identification shows he joined the part of the International Legion commanded by Ukraine’s military intelligence service, the GUR. Two other Legion units, the 1st and 3rd Battalions, are attached to Ukraine’s regular armed forces. Each has about 500 fighters, according to Ukrainian media.
Current and former members of the International Legion who spoke to The Globe and Mail say Mr. Semrau, who left the Legion last month shortly after The Globe began asking questions about his presence in Ukraine, is representative of what is informally referred to here as “The Zoo” – a motley collection of adventure seekers, criminals, and con artists who have come to Ukraine seeking glory, reinvention, and redemption.
Mr. Semrau’s backstory is unique, but not entirely remarkable in the ranks of the Legionnaires. Among the others known to have joined the fight for Ukraine are Rhee Keun, a 38-year-old South Korean special-forces veteran with a large YouTube following, as well as a conviction for sexual assault back home, and Tristan Nettles, a 34-year-old U.S. Marine Corps veteran notorious in Thailand for using his girlfriend to unwittingly transport drugs and then leaving her to face a lifetime jail sentence.
Several foreign fighters espouse far-right beliefs on their social media accounts. One tattoo-covered Canadian fighter, who met with The Globe, drunkenly gave several fascist salutes in the middle of a Kyiv pub while talking loudly about his hatred for Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Another Canadian who travelled to Ukraine was retired lieutenant-general Trevor Cadieu, who was on course to take over as the top general in the Canadian army last year before allegations of sexual misconduct dating back to 1994 emerged. He was charged in June with two counts of sexual assault.
Legion sources say Mr. Cadieu – whom Russian propaganda channels claimed was playing a role directing the prolonged Ukrainian defence of the Azovstal steel factory in the city of Mariupol – was never a member of any of its three battalions. [AyPee] Russia pounded Ukraine’s energy facilities Tuesday with its biggest barrage of missiles yet, striking targets across the country and causing widespread blackouts. A senior U.S. intelligence official said missiles crossed into NATO member Poland, where two people were killed.
A second person confirmed to The Associated Press that apparent Russian missiles struck a site in Poland about 15 miles from the Ukrainian border.
The Russian Defense Ministry denied being behind “any strikes on targets near the Ukrainian-Polish border” and said in a statement that photos of purported damage “have nothing to do” with Russian weapons.
A NATO official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the alliance was looking into reports of a strike in Poland. The U.S. National Security Council said it was also looking into the reports.
Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller did not immediately confirm the information from the U.S. intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the situation. But Mueller said top leaders were holding an emergency meeting due to a “crisis situation.”
Polish media reported that two people died Tuesday afternoon after a projectile struck an area where grain was drying in Przewodów, a Polish village near the border with Ukraine.
Neighboring Moldova was also affected. It reported massive power outages after the strikes knocked out a key power line that supplies the small nation, an official said.
The missile strikes plunged much of Ukraine into darkness and drew defiance from President Volodymr Zelenskyy, who shook his fist and declared: “We will survive everything.”
Zelenskyy said Russia fired at least 85 missiles, most of them aimed at the country’s power facilities, and blacked out many cities.
His energy minister said the attack was “the most massive” bombardment of power facilities in the nearly 9-month-old Russian invasion, striking both power generation and transmission systems.

I think the most likely scenario is the missiles wandered accidently. Russian missiles have a hard time hitting Las Vegas on a clear day as it is. Targets within 20km of the border are in danger of misstrikes.
I expect NATO will start intercepting Russian missiles within 50km of the Polish border though.

I disagree. You piss off to many nations you WILL be standing alone. Both militarily, politically and in trade. No nation, even the US can be completely isolated and thrive.
I think we should have declared victory and disbanded NATO in the early 90s, but we are still in it now and should and will honor our agreements.

The Polish government is studying whether there are grounds for launching the procedures provided for in Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty. This was said by government spokesman Piotr Muller after the meeting of the Council of Ministers' committee on national security and defense, which was held at the request of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.
✔️Article 4 says that the parties "will hold joint consultations when, in the opinion of either of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of either Party is threatened."
The Polish government also decided to increase the combat readiness of some military units.

We have unserious people running our foreign policy, a senile fool masquerading as the President, graft from Ukraine and God-knows-what driving a spigot of money into an un-accoutable money pit of a proxy war, and weakened, exhausted Russian bear flailing about in a darkened mess of a battlespace. We should never have talked about Ukraine into NATO, have spent far too much money on propping up the entire country, are sinking into perilous economic, financial and cultural dystopian spaces in large parts of our nation, AND
if we don't honor our word with NATO allies in a genuine moment of need, we will deserve to be a pariah. Words matter, promises between nations matter, and as unfamiliar to many in Washington, national character and honor matter!

Now Russia says it didn't attack anything in the area. So what would Ukraine be shooting at, and in the wrong direction?

Per reports, the missiles landed approximately 4 miles from the Pol/Uke border in Przewodow, Poland.
Is Przewodow a war material staging area (or Zelenskyy's Green Screen office.)? If no, it is doubtful that, if the missiles were Rus, they were a deliberate provocation. Note that closest Polish airport is at Lublin, approximately 50-mi from Przewodow.
If Uke A/A missiles, it will be described as an "Oopsie" and, after suitable apologies, will be soon forgotten.

My comment: If those had been Ukrainian S-300s and they had missed their target, they would have self-destructed in the air. Their fragments would have fallen to the ground. This does not match the description of the eyewitnesses. For one thing, such a deep crater is unlikely, nor would there have been any huge explosions. Moreover, the debris would have been spread over a much larger area.
Moreover, the intended target ( potential Russian missiles on their way to Lviv) would have had to fly from Belarus directly along the Polish border.
