Taliban and NRF Engage in Fierce Battle in Baghlan Province: Casualties Reported on Both Sides
[8am] Sources in Baghlan province report that a clash between the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
and National Resistance® Front (NRF) is ongoing in the Khost district.

The clash began at 10:00 am on Sunday, May 7, in the village of Jangalak and is still ongoing.

Sources in the district have not confirmed any potential casualties of the National Resistance® Front to Hasht-e Subh, but they do confirm the death of three Taliban fighters in this clash.

The fighting began after the Taliban launched a house-to-house search in the village.

The Taliban have not yet commented on the clash.

It is worth mentioning that with the rising temperatures, the military movements of anti-Taliban groups have increased in various parts of Afghanistan.

In the latest case, the National Resistance® Front claimed that in an attack on a Taliban outpost in Parwan, two Taliban fighters were killed and at least four others were maimed.

Daily Evacuation Brief May 8, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • PAKISTAN’S DEFENCE CHIEF MEETS WITH TALIBAN FOREIGN MINISTER IN PAKISTAN – General Asim Munir, the Chief of Staff for Pakistan’s armed forces received Foreign Minister Muttaqi to discuss regional security matters between the two countries. A source in Pakistan said the meeting was not on the official agenda for the trip and may have been called without input from the Taliban’s Defense Minister, Mullah Yaqoob. The source said Muttaqi represented himself as a personal envoy of the Supreme Leader. If accurate, it could reinforce claims about the widening rift between Kandahar and Kabul. It was not immediately clear if any members of the delegation represented the Minister of Defense at the meeting(s).

  • TALIBAN VISIT TO PAKISTAN CONCLUDES – It is not immediately clear if any positive progress was made during the Trilateral consultation of Foreign Ministers or the subsequent meetings with institutions and/or organizations. Remarks made after the event were muted and included the continued exhortations to: 1) Form an inclusive government 2) Stamp out terrorism 3) Try to respect the rights of Afghan women. It had the appearance of a publicity stunt and is unlikely to elicit any serious pathway forward.

  • AFGHAN REFUGEES IN IRAN FACE A NEW PROBLEM – The Iranian regime stopped issuing a special ‘bank card’ that authorized Afghan refugees sheltering in the country to make purchases from local merchants. The program was halted months ago and many of the cards are expiring. Without the card, refugees are either denied services/goods from merchants or, are subjected to bribes from merchants to ‘overlook’ the discrepancy. The tactic is considered one of the many tools Tehran is using to deter illegal migration from Afghanistan and is expected to have a negative effect on nutrition for families. Some influential religious and political leaders have called for new cards to be issued while others are demanding the issue of illegals residing in the country be dealt with decisively.

  • INDIA DEALING WITH LARGE-SCALE ETHNIC VIOLENCE IN MANIPUR – Over 50 people were killed and 23,000 have fled the unrest in Manipur as tribally motivated violence erupted after a protest march last week. The Indian government has deployed thousands of troops to the area bordering Myanmar and has authorized the use of deadly force to quell violence. Curfews have been established and the internet was cut in many parts of Manipur. The crisis came about as many of the minority tribal groups in Manipur are critical of the government’s decision to grant the dominant tribe (Meitei) status as a ‘Scheduled Tribe’. Such a denotation gives members of the Meitei ethnic group elevated access to government jobs and admission to colleges. While Manipur has witnessed significant violence since the 1950s, things had mellowed somewhat over the last several years, aided by New Delhi’s increased engagement in the State.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Baghlan::Taliban security forces, responding to a tip, began searching houses in Khost district mid-morning on Sunday in the village of Jangalak. NRF forces in the area responded and a clash ensued. The fighting reportedly lasted several hours. 3 Taliban fighters were killed, but other casualty figures will likely be reported over the next twenty-four hours.

NEXT 24 HOURS
TALIBAN OPERATIONS IN BAGHLAN LIKELY TO CONTINUE – After yesterday’s engagement with the National Resistance Front forces in Jangalak village (Khost District), search operations continued well into the night. The Taliban reputedly made several arrests and local eyewitnesses said the arrests were indiscriminate. As the fighting was intense, it is likely that additional Taliban forces have been sent to the area and searches of homes will continue. Further arrests are also a distinct possibility.

Renewed clashes erupt between army and paramilitary forces in South Darfur
[SUDANTRIBUNE] Clashes have resumed between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state on Saturday.

Since April 15, Sudan has experienced intense fighting in Khartoum and several states in the Darfur region between the army and the RSF, resulting in over 500 fatalities, thousands of injuries, and significant infrastructure damage.

In South and North Darfur states the warring parties observed a ceasefire mediated by local leaders.

According to security sources, violent mostly peaceful festivities erupted in three Nyala neighborhoods between the army and the paramilitary forces, with both sides employing heavy weapons that caused damage to several civilian homes, although there were no reported casualties.

The sources told Sudan Tribune that the renewed violence occurred when a group of RSF forces attempted to infiltrate army warehouses in the al-Nahda neighborhood, which is under the control of the army.

The fighting caused panic among residents of the area, and some fled to the city center. The main market in Nyala also closed amid fears of further armed confrontations.

There are concerns that the renewed festivities may escalate and trigger tribal conflict in the region. There have been reports of a large deployment of tribal gunnies in areas controlled by the RSF to the east of Nyala, raising fears of a breakdown in security.

On April 15, violent mostly peaceful festivities erupted in Nyala between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, resulting in over 60 civilian deaths, and the burning and looting of several markets by armed militias.

Clashes continue in Khartoum as indirect talks to begin
[SUDANTRIBUNE] The Sudanese army on Saturday repulsed an attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on the command of the air force, which carries out frequent attacks on the RSF’s positions.

The "RSF attempted to storm the command of the Air Defence Forces in Khartoum, but the Sudan Armed Forces repelled the attack, destroyed several enemy vehicles, and captured three combat vehicles," read the statement.

, explosions, and festivities have continued in various areas of Khartoum.

The paramilitary forces are deployed mainly in the Sudanese capital and took advantage of its presence in several strategic sites to control it after the eruption of the festivities avec the army on April 15.

To prevent Rapid Support Forces (RSF) Lions of Islam from reaching the capital, Sudan’s air force regularly raids military reinforcements heading to the capital from Darfur, the home of the RSF, to prevent them from reaching Khartoum.

Eyewitnesses said festivities erupted between the Republican Palace, where the RSF fighters are, and Airport Street. Also, the air force carried out attacks while the militia forces responded with anti-aircraft guns, amid the rising plumes of smoke in the sky.

In a separate statement, the Sudanese army reported that its forces engaged in combat with the Lions of Islam at the intersection leading to the suburb of Barri from Khartoum.

The RSF set up temporary mobile checkpoints on Khartoum’s streets. The Lions of Islam have been accused of stealing civilians’ belongings and cell phones. Also, traders claim that the RSF militias have broken their shops and looted their contents.

Iraqi warplanes strike suspected ISIS members in Diyala
[Rudaw] A number of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS) turbans were killed in an operation carried out by the Iraqi air force against the terror group in Diyala province, state media said on Sunday.

F-16 jets delivered an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
in the Sundij area of Diyala’s Kifri district, and the strike "resulted in the killing of members of the terrorist group and the destruction of their guesthouses," according to the country’s Joint Operations Command.

Iraqi and Kurdish security forces often carry out operations against members of the terror group despite an overall decline in their activities in recent years, and their hideouts are often tracked by the Iraqi air force and destroyed.

The turbans have particularly taken shelter in a security vacuum in parts of northern Iraq that are disputed between Baghdad and Erbil, stretching across several provinces including Diyala, Salahaddin, and Kirkuk.

The Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) have discussed establishing joint brigades to secure areas disputed between the governments. Talks stalled because of elections and a year of political wrangling, but funds for two joint brigades are included in the draft 2023 budget.

In December, an Iraqi army spokesperson revealed that they had killed over 200 ISIS fighters in 2022.

At funeral, thousands hail Arab teen shot dead in road clash as a ‘martyr’, Islamic Jihad take potshots at Israeli suspect’s home town
[IsraelTimes] Suspect Dennis Mokin, 32, appears in court as relatives of Diar Umari shout ’murderer’; victim’s father and Arab MKs blame Minister Ben Gvir for encouraging civilians to carry guns

Thousands of people attended the funeral on Sunday of 19-year-old Diar Umari, an Arab Israeli teen from the northern Arab village of Sandala who was rubbed out on Saturday during a roadside fight with a man from neighboring Gan Ner.

Dennis Mokin, the suspect accused of shooting dead Umari, appeared in court on Sunday and his remand was extended, as concerns grew that the killing could ignite internecine tensions.

Relatives of the victim shouted at Mokin during the hearing and scuffled with security guards until court ushers and police intervened. Two men were reportedly detained for questioning.

"Barbarian! You murdered a young kid!" one of the men shouted at Mokin as he waited in the dock before the hearing. "Murderer," shouted another person in the courtroom.

At Umari’s funeral, mourners chanted, "With spirit and blood, we will redeem you, martyr!"
also: "We're Number One!"
Mokin, 32, gave himself up to police after the Saturday shooting, which was filmed by another driver. The suspect held a firearm license, and the gun used in the shooting was handed over to police.

The suspect was later found to have alcohol in his blood when tested by police, according to Hebrew media reports. In addition to Umari’s killing, Mokin is suspected of driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license.

Mokin will remain in jug for a week, the Nazareth Magistrate’s Court ruled.

Umari’s family and leading Arab politicians blamed the killing on the hardline government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and in particular, far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir who has sought to increase the number of citizens licensed to carry firearms as a way of countering terrorism and deadly crime.

Umari’s father called Mokin a "terrorist" and blamed Ben Gvir for his son’s death.

Ben Gvir "asked all the Jews to go out into the streets with guns," Ahmad Umari told the Ynet news site.

"He said to them that they have an enemy here, an Arab enemy. It seems to be that this guy was a good student of Ben Gvir and faithfully carried out his work," the grieving father said.

Umari said his son had gone out for a drive in the area and the suspect cut him off, then pulled him from his vehicle.

"My son pushed him, and then when he wanted to be done with him he went back to the car to continue driving, and then [Mokin] shot in him the back and killed him," the man said.

The shooting was filmed by another road user.

A clip shared on social media showed Umari and Mokin scuffling. Umari then returns to his own vehicle at which point Mokin shoots him from the other side of the road.

An initial investigation has reportedly found that the incident escalated following an encounter between the two on the road earlier and that they had no previous acquaintance.

In court, Mokin’s attorney Nadav Greenwald said his client acted in self-defense, had fired a warning shot in the air, and that he thought Umari had gone to his car to get something with which to return and attack him.

However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
an Israel Police investigator at the hearing appeared to cast doubt on the claim that Umari was a threat to Mokin.

"From what we see in the video it is much worse than what the suspect claims," the investigator said. "It does not look good for [Mokin].

Jenin-based terrorists claim to shoot at hometown of suspect in deadly road shooting

[IsraelTimes] A local wing of the Paleostinian Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Moslem Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
terror group claims to have shot up the northern Israeli town of Gan Ner.

The Jenin-based group publishes unclear footage, purportedly showing the town from a distance, before gunshots are heard.

There are no reports of damage of injuries.

The alleged shooting comes after a young Arab Israeli man was rubbed out near the town yesterday, in an apparent roadside brawl. The suspect who opened fire has been arrested.

Paleostinian button men in the northern West Bank have targeted Israeli settlements and towns along the security barrier several times in recent months.

Daraa: 2 gov’t soldiers maimed in west, yoot 'toes up' in north, farmer killed by cycle of violence, prisoner’s body to be sent home

Two government soldiers wounded in western Daraa

[NPASyria] On Sunday, unidentified button men shot at and maimed two soldiers of the Syrian government forces in the western countryside of Daraa, south Syria.

A local source told North Press that two government soldiers were seriously maimed after being targeted by unknown button men in the city of Nawa in the western countryside of Daraa.

The source added that the two men were in a car near the automated bakery in the city center.

"After taking the two soldiers to a hospital, the government forces sent several vehicles loaded with soldiers to the area in order to search for the perpetrators," the source noted.

Following their deployment, "a number of nearby shop owners were interrogated with the aim of finding the perpetrators."

The security centers and posts of the government forces have been repeatedly targeted by unknown attackers since the government took control of Daraa in 2018 as part of a Russian-mediated settlement agreement.

Young man killed in clashes in northern Daraa

[NPASyria] On Saturday, a person was killed in festivities between two gangs in the town of Jassem in the northern countryside of Daraa, south Syria.

A local source told North Press, "The young man, Alaa Ismail al-Badi al-Halqi, was killed in festivities between the groups of Tawfiq Fayez al-Jalam and Abdullah Ismail al-Halqi."
Neither appears in our archives, but some hints on the internet suggest the first group is connected to the SDF.
The source added that the festivities, which are taking place over old disputes, were renewed on Saturday. "The city’s residents appealed to the two groups to stop the festivities in order to preserve the lives of civilians, but to no avail."

The shops have been closed and the streets have been completely empty since the start of the festivities between the two groups, the source added.

"Khaled Fayez al-Jalam, the brother of the leader of the al-Jalam group, was killed on January 19 in festivities with the al-Halqi group, after which the city’s notables intervened and were able to calm things down at that time," the source concluded.

2 people from Syria’s Daraa killed

[NPASyria] Two people from Daraa Governorate, southern Syria, were killed on Saturday, one of them in Saydnaya prison near the capital of Damascus after years of arresting him.

A local source told North Press that the family of the detainee Muhammad Abdulghani, has received news about his killing, however, it has not received his body.

Abdulghani hails from the village of Umm al-Awsaj, in the northern countryside of Daraa, and he was arrested on a military checkpoint of Syrian government forces five years ago while he was heading to the city of Daraa, according to the source.

In addition, another local source told North Press that unknown people riding a cycle of violence opened fire on the young man Nayf Abazid in the security square in Daraa, killing him immediately.

Abazid is a farmer and he has not ever involved in military parties, according to the source.

In July 2018, the opposition armed factions and government forces reached a cease-fire agreement mediated by Russia in the opposition-held areas in Daraa Governorate. Under the deal, the opposition armed factions agreed to hand over their weapons in exchange for staying in Daraa, and those who opposed the agreement they were sent to Idlib, which is under the control of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else

On late April, the government forces handed over the bodies of two brothers after they were killed a week ago by their own members in north of Daraa.

Idlib: Turkish border guards shoot 2 individuals at Syria’s border, HTS reaps zakat before farmers reap harvest
[NPASyria] On Sunday, Ottoman Turkish border guards maimed a woman and her daughter while trying to cross the Syrian-Ottoman Turkish border in Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria.

The women and her daughter were maimed near the village of Kherbet al-Joz in the countryside of Jisr al-Shughur city, west of Idlib.

A local source from the village told North Press that the locals helped a woman and her daughter who were shot by Ottoman Turkish border guards on Sunday dawn. According to the maimed woman’s testimony, the Ottoman Turkish border guards arrested two young men.

The woman and her daughter, who was injured in the right side of her waist, were taken to Harem Hospital, west of Idlib.

Syrians who attempt to cross into Ottoman Turkish territory are assaulted and shot by the Ottoman Turkish border guards with live ammunition.

The Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press recorded the death of 23 individuals and the injury of 96 others, including at least two children and five women, since the beginning of 2023.

HTS imposes zakat on farmers before harvest

[NPASyria] On Saturday, the Zakat Authority of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, formerly al-Nusra, before that it was called something else
...al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, from which sprang the Islamic State...
(HTS) imposed zakat (obligatory payment in Islam) on farmers in HTS-held areas in Idlib, northwest Syria, despite that farmers have not yet started harvesting their lands.

A source from the HTS’ Zakat Chamber told North Press, "The imposition of zakat came suddenly because of HTS’ need for money."

He added that zakat deducts 2.5 percent of the estimated market value of the crops, without taking into account harvest costs, labor costs, and potential losses in the event of fire. In addition, the production’s gains may be less than the estimates.

"The HTS owns about 50 percent of the farmlands in Idlib, part of which it seized as spoils of war and the other part it bought under the names of civilian dealers, but in reality it belongs to the HTS," the source said.

Turkish attacks disrupt agriculture on Manbij frontlines
As far as the Turks are concerned, the sooner the Kurds and their neighbours curl up and die, the sooner Turkey can plant submissive Arab refugees in their place. Yes, they won’t be nearly as effective, but they won’t be rebellious, which is all that matters.
[NPASyria] In a village located on contact lines between the Manbij Military Council (MMC), affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), and Ottoman Turkish forces, Faysal fears the prospect of Ottoman Turkish shells hitting his land and obliterating his wheat crops for this season after spending large sums of money planting it.

Faysal al-Issa, 42, from the village of al-Jat in northern Manbij in north Syria, told North Press that Ottoman Turkish forces and Ottoman Turkish-backed opposition factions, also known as the Syrian National Army (SNA), deliberately target their villages every year when it is harvest time, causing them great losses.

Villages on contact lines are under constant shelling. Random shells that hit farmlands planted with wheat set fire to the crops and thus causing immense losses.

The farmer, who planted four hectares of land with wheat, is perturbed with fears over the possibility of losing the crops due to fires caused by shelling of Ottoman Turkish forces and their affiliated SNA, which target his land each season.

The border regions and villages on contact lines are subjected to such attacks which, sometimes, set fire to the crops. Fires cause catastrophic losses for the population, especially since the majority depend on agriculture as their main source of income and invest so much in it.

While farmers who own lands far from frontlines are mostly spared from the shelling, they are not spared from the high costs of planting wheat. The recent low prices of one kilogram of wheat has been their sole concern.

Few kilometers away on the contact line, Adham shares the same fear as his peers. It is his and his family’s main source of income on which he built many hopes and dreams.

Adham al-Abadi, 38, from the village of al-Awshariya in northern Manbij, said he fears the Ottoman Turkish shelling. Every year he feels reluctant to plant his land, "but the difficult economic conditions force me to take risks to provide for my five-member family."

"We have big hopes and ambitions this season. It was a good year with much rain that revived the crops. But we need someone to protect our lands and crops from shells and to stop Ottoman Turkish forces from committing violations against the people of the region," he added.

Ghanem, from the village of al-Kawikli in northwest Manbij, fears for his crops which he has no idea how to protect from the repeated shelling.

Ghanem al-Ali, 45, said that each season the people of the village "go through hard times from the beginning of planting till the harvest time. We fear for our livelihood due to being close to the contact lines that separate between the MMC forces on one hand and the Ottoman Turkish forces and Ottoman Turkish-backed SNA on the other."

He told North Press that they harvest their crops by hiring daily workers since owners of combine harvesters refuse to go to these dangerous villages for they might be targeted by Ottoman Turkish snipers.

This exacerbates the suffering of locals during the harvest and increases their expenses. Farmers are thinking about halting cultivation altogether. "We will just have to quit farming until things are better," Ghanem said.

Iran sentences Kurdish paramedic to 90 months in prison: Monitor
[Rudaw] Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
has sentenced a Kurdish paramedic to 90 months
...or 7.5 years, for those of us accustomed to thinking longer term...
in prison for his involvement in treating maimed protesters during the Zhina (Mahsa) Amini demonstrations last year, a human rights
...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless...
monitor reported on Sunday.

Hengaw Human Rights Organization revealed that Naser Fagheh-Eissa, a member of Mahabad’s Red Crescent, was sentenced to seven years and six months in prison, after being arrested by Iranian intelligence forces in Mahabad in late October.

The Mahabad criminal court has charged Fagheh-Eissa with treating the maimed protesters, disrupting public order, and the possession of bullets.

The paramedic might see a further increase in his sentence, as he awaits another court session where he is being tried for charges related to another case.

Thousands of maimed protesters were treated at home by medical personnel working in secret and away from the eyes of the security forces, as they could not risk seeking help at hospital where they stood the chance of being arrested for taking part in what the authorities had labeled as "riots".

22-year-old Amini died in police custody last September after being detained for allegedly wearing a lax hijab. Authorities claimed that the cause of death was a heart attack, but human rights activists and witnesses said she had been beaten inside the police van, leading to her death.

Amini’s death sparked nationwide protests initially against the country’s strict dress code for women, before turning into a full-blown revolution calling for the overthrow of the Islamic regime. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its paramilitary Basij led a violent mostly peaceful crackdown against the protesters, killing hundreds of people and wounding thousands others.

The protests around the country eventually simmered down, but Iran’s crackdown was the subject of massive international condemnation.
