Coronavirus vaccine appears safe in first-in-human trial
[Jpost] A coronavirus vaccine developed by CanSino Biologics Inc appears to be safe and induced a rapid immune response in its first human trial, Chinese researchers reported on Friday in The Lancet medical journal.
First-in-human studies, known as Phase I trials, are primarily designed to test safety.

This vaccine did not cause any serious adverse effects, the researchers say, though they did report some side effects such as fever.

Furthermore, blood samples from the 108 vaccinated adults showed so-called neutralizing antibodies and T-cell responses against the novel coronavirus, a sign of possible efficacy.

"These results represent an important milestone," coauthor Professor Wei Chen from the Beijing Institute of Biotechnology said in a statement. "The ability to trigger these immune responses does not necessarily indicate that the vaccine will protect humans from COVID-19. We are still a long way from this vaccine being available to all," the researcher added.

Further studies will be needed to confirm whether the vaccine protects against infection. The first such trial is underway in Wuhan, China.

Coronavirus task force chief Mike Pence: You did it, America
h/t Instapundit
[Washington Examiner] - It was early in the virus fight when only a few in the United States had died of COVID-19 that White House coronavirus task force leader Vice President Mike Pence and Drs. Anthony Fauci and Deborah Birx went into the Oval Office with bad news.

Armed with a chart titled "Goals of Community Mitigation," they showed President Trump that without the type of social distancing they wanted him to put in place, the virus death toll could reach 1.5 million to 2.2 million. With it, the range would drop to 100,000 to 240,000.

"The president said, ’Do it.’ No hesitation," recalled the vice president.

The public was urged to stay apart and stay home to "flatten the curve" of the pandemic, and they did. Today, as many states begin to ease rules near the Memorial Day holiday week turning point that Pence predicted, the death toll, tragic as it is, stands at the lowest level on that chart.

Mississippi mayor who ‘didn't see anything unreasonable' about George Floyd's death refuses to resign
PETAL, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi mayor who sparked outrage when he said he "didn’t see anything unreasonable" about the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis police custody is resisting calls to resign, including from his own town’s board of aldermen.

"Why in the world would anyone choose to become a police officer in our society today?" Petal Mayor Hal Marx tweeted Tuesday, the day four Minneapolis police officers were fired. The 46-year-old Floyd, a black man, was handcuffed and pleading for air as a white police officer kneeled on his neck Monday.

In a follow-up tweet, the Republican directly referenced the Floyd case, saying he "didn’t see anything unreasonable": "If you can say you can’t breathe, you’re breathing. Most likely that man died of overdose or heart attack. Video doesn’t show his resistance that got him in that position. Police being crucified."

#10  If he had an underlying condition then the cause of death was COVID-19.

Strangely enough, that might actually be the underlying cause. There have been patients who did walk-ins, were tested for the virus and immediately put on ventilators because their lungs had sustained damage equivalent to the kind mountain climbers get from being up too high for too many days.

Chattanooga Police Chief - 'You don't see a problem with Floyd arrest, turn in your badge.'
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WATE) — A Tennessee police chief’s response to the death of George Floyd, who died while in Minneapolis police custody, is going viral on Twitter with more than 600,000 likes.

On Wednesday, Chattanooga Police Department Chief David Roddy called on law enforcement officers who don’t see a problem with what was captured in disturbing video of the arrest to turn in their badges.

"There is no need to see more video. There’s no need to wait to see how it plays out. There is no need to put a knee on someone’s neck for nine minutes. There is a need to do something. If you wear a badge and you don’t have an issue with this, turn it in."

The prospect of germ terrorism has arrived
[Washington Times] It is a possibility that world leaders may not want to address quite yet — but the topic has now entered the global discourse.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how vulnerable modern societies are to viral infections and their shock potential," the council’s Committee on Counter-Terrorism said in a statement Monday, according to the German news group.

Home Front: Culture Wars
We're Not Allowed to be Honest About Black Crime‐So We May End Up with A Crazy Black Lady President
[UNZ] America’s most enduring problem, the problem of the blacks, has been dominating the news this week.

The attitude I bring to these news stories is one of weary despair. They are reported and discussed publicly in language that bears very little relation to reality, so that most of what is said and written is worthless. To speak honestly about race is in fact taboo, and genuinely shocking, for most Americans.

Here’s an example. Back in 2016 a black man in Charlotte, North Carolina was shot dead by a cop, also black. There were protests, riots, vandalism, and looting. A Republican local congressman, Robert Pittenger, said the following thing:
The grievance in their minds—the animus, the anger—they hate white people, because white people are successful and they’re not.

Congressman: Charlotte protesters ’hate white people because white people are successful’, by Peter Holley, Washington Post, September 23, 2016

Nailed it, Congressman. But of course, Pittenger was denounced by all the Great and the Good, and to save his career, issued a groveling retraction.

I’ve been living in America since the second Nixon administration, with some intermissions. For many years I assumed that this clinging to unreality could not be stable; that truth and honesty would eventually prevail; that we’d learn to speak to each other openly and frankly, citizen to citizen.

To my dismay and despair, the opposite has happened. As the years pass, we drift further and further from reality and truth, deeper and deeper into fantasy and denial. It’s very depressing; like being in a plane that’s lost all power and is just going down, down, down.

I love this country; I have two kids who will live out their lives here. Yet it’s hard to see any hope for America when the landscape of social commentary is smothered in shallow lies and infantile delusions.

#12  #3 Cornel West traces US unrest to Obama's failures: black faces in high places couldn't deliver

Funny, that was the same major conclusion that Stephan Tgernstrim and other historians came to about the 1960s urban riots: the Johnson administration and the mainstream Civil Rights movement raised young urban blacks' expectations beyond reasonable levels. When they didn't see a major change in their personal living situations, they turned to violence and looting.

Thernstrim in 1998:

[The Kerner Commission] report does not satisfactorily answer the elementary question of why the riots occurred when and where they did.

Because the commission took for granted that the riots were the fault of white racism, it would have been awkward to have had to confront the question of why liberal Detroit blew up while Birmingham and other southern cities -- where conditions for blacks were infinitely worse -- did not. Likewise, if the problem was white racism, why didn't the riots occur in the 1930s, when prevailing white racial attitudes were far more barbaric than they were in the 1960s?

Faltering Renault to cut 15,000 jobs worldwide, including 4,600 in France
[France24] French carmaker Renault said on Friday it was launching talks with unions to restructure some plants and potentially close others as it confirmed plans to cut around 15,000 jobs worldwide to ride out a slump in sales.

Faced with a downturn in demand compounded by the coronavirus crisis, Renault is aiming to find 2 billion euros ($2.22 billion) in savings over the next three years as it shrinks production and hones in on more profitable models.

It said the restructuring measures — including the job cuts, transfers and retirement plans that would affect just under 10% of its global workforce — would cost 1.2 billion euros.

Some 4,600 jobs would go in France, though largely through a voluntary departure plan and a retirement scheme, Franck Daout of the CFDT trade union told REUTERS.

The overall cuts would affect just under 10% of Renault's 180,000 global workforce. The firm has around 48,500 staff in France.
Similar model to the one in the graphic.

Officers protect fired cop Derek Chauvin's home after George Floyd death
[New York Post] Droves of police officers blocked more than 100 protesters from the Minnesota home of the now-former Minneapolis cop who pressed his knee into the neck of George Floyd before he died, new video shows.

A profanity-laced 2-minute clip shows a line of officers late Wednesday protecting the Oakdale home of Derek Chauvin, a 19-year department vet who was fired Tuesday along with three cops involved in the incident that has sparked national outrage.

"Look how many f—king people are defending this killer’s house," a woman identified in reports as Chloe Jo Sherrill repeatedly says in the footage. "Look how f—king many! Look at this s—t! They are defending a murderer’s house."

One protester near the band of officers in the St. Paul suburb was hit with Mace, according to the video.

"And they’re ready to do it to all the rest of us, too," Sherrill says. "Why does it look like they’re gearing up for war? Because they’re scared. We are angry and they are scared."

One of the officers then appeared to run toward Sherrill, prompting her to drop her phone and run off, video shows.

In a grand jury indictment made public on Thursday, US prosecutors accused North Korea's Foreign Trade Bank (FTB) of conspiring with the employees charged to cause other banks "to process at least $2.5 billion in illegal payments via over 250 front companies."

The United States blacklisted the FTB in 2013; the U.N. Security Council did so in 2017.

The indictment is the largest of any North Korea sanctions violations case, a US law enforcement official said. The alleged crimes include money laundering and bank fraud.

Washington "has signified its commitment to hampering North Korea's ability to illegally access the U.S. financial system and limit its ability to use proceeds from illicit actions to enhance its illegal WMD and ballistic missile programs," Acting United States Attorney Michael Sherwin said in a statement.

Some of the $2.5 billion was directed to North Korea's nuclear weapons and ballistic missile program, a US official said.

North Korea has been subject to UN sanctions since 2006 that have been strengthened by the Security Council over the years in a bid to cut off funding for Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

Violent clashes between IDF and Palestinians erupt in West bank
[Jpost] A suspect attempted to use his vehicle to run over IDF soldiers near Meir Spring in the West Bank where the Ephraim Regional Brigade operates. The soldiers fired at the attacker and killed him. The IDF said that no injuries to its troops were reported.

Some Paleostinian reports claim that that the driver was Fadi Adnan Samarah. Following the attempted ramming attack, violent demonstrations erupted at the entrance to Nabi Salih in the southern West bank.

Soldiers in the area are used riot dispersal means against demonstrators throwing rocks at military vehicles.

One Paleostinian was reportedly injured during these demonstrations.

Jerusalem Police kill unarmed Palestinian at Old City gate
[Ynet] Family says dead man had special needs, police say they noticed a 'suspicious object,' that they claim looked like a gun, and told him to stop in his tracks, after which the suspect began to flee

Jerusalem police shot dead an unarmed Palestinian they suspected was carrying a weapon near Jerusalem's Old City on Saturday.

Police said he was carrying "a suspicious object that looked like a pistol" and ran away when ordered to stop. The police say they chased him on foot and opened fire.

A police spokesman did not immediately respond when asked whether the man was in fact carrying a gun.

The family of the young man says he has a mental disability.

The man was later identified as Iyad Halak, 32, a resident of East Jerusalem.

An initial investigation has been opened into the matter and a report has been filed in the Prosecutor's Office following the shooting.

Missouri boys save 5-year-old girl from drowning in creek
[DIRSN.com] Four young boys are being hailed as heroes after saving a 5-year-old girl from drowning in a creek near Jackson, Missouri.

Kinsley Stuart, 5, was playing in Hubble Creek on May 17, in an area of the creek popular with young children. She was near a bridge that has a drainage culvert beneath it. An abundance of recent rainfall had filled the creek past its normal level, creating a suction that dragged Stuart into the culvert.

A nearby group of boys had noticed the girl seemed to be missing when Aiden Kyle, 11, saw her hand grabbing the top of the bridge and dove down to grab hold of her. His friend Isaiah Randol saw that Kyle was being dragged down as well, so he and two other boys joined in the rescue effort.

The boys all pulled until Stuart was free. She remained unharmed.

Pres. Bill Clinton was successful in pushing back against Sister Souljah and the BLM predecessor moment. It was Clinton who finally kicked the old Democratic pandering habit and supported the hiring of 100,000 (?) policemen with federal funds + the harsh sentencing laws which helped to finally broke the back of the crack cocaine & violent crime epidemic in this country.

For which (of course) Clinton was excoriated by the BLMers as a racist oppressor.

Cypriot Court Upholds Hizbullah Suspect's U.S. Extradition on Money Charges
[AnNahar] Cyprus' supreme court on Friday upheld an order to extradite a suspected Hizbullah
...Party of God, a Leb militia inspired, founded, funded and directed by Iran. Hizbullah refers to itself as The Resistance and purports to defend Leb against Israel, with whom it has started and lost one disastrous war to date, though it did claim victory...
member to the U.S. on money laundering charges, official media said.

A five-judge bench unanimously dismissed an appeal against a decision by a lower court in September 2019 to extradite the man, identified only by his surname Diab, the Cyprus News Agency said.

The suspect is wanted by authorities in Florida for alleged money laundering crimes.

According to the extradition papers, the charges related to money laundering in excess of $100,000 (90,000 euros), conspiracy to money launder, the transfer of unlicensed money and illegal use of wireless communication.

The court said the suspect conspired with individuals in 2014 to launder drug money.

Diab was arrested at Larnaca airport in Cyprus when he arrived from Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
in March 2019.

Police apprehended him when they found there was a U.S.-issued warrant for his arrest.

The supreme court ruled he will remain in detention until his extradition can be arranged by the justice ministry.

Of course, the limited energy density of batteries also comes with significant drawbacks in aircraft performance. The e-Caravan — built with “2019 batteries,” according to Ganzarski — could carry four to five passengers a range of just one hundred miles. By the time MagniX receives FAA certification for its electric propulsion system, which the company expects by the end of 2021, he believes the aircraft will be able to carry “a full load” that distance.

I guess if you are only going 100 miles with four passengers there is no reason to get above 2000' except to scrape over buildings.

Minneapolis: Now We'll See How the Snowflake Generation Handles the Barbarians
[PJ] "The torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans," President John F. Kennedy said at his inaugural in 1961. Today, this generation is passing that torch to invite a new generation of barbarians to burn and loot and pillage, not serve and protect.

The modern urban mayor is epitomized by Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who has chosen not to crack down on the barbarians torching his city, but encourages them to keep the flames hot because "The symbolism of a building cannot outweigh the importance of life." That laughable, sophomoric statement isn’t going to save anyone or any structure.

That building is not a "symbol." It has value to the person who owns it. And that’s the problem with Frey and the generation of snowflakes who are moving into positions of power and responsibility. Quite simply, they don’t believe in private property. In fact, they see private property as a genuine evil. So, of course, it doesn’t matter if you burn it. It’s not worth protecting.

We saw this same attitude in Baltimore in 2015 when Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake expressed the notion that protesters should be given space to destroy.

Once upon a time, in America, young people aspiring to careers in practical affairs in fields such as law, government or business were taught the supreme importance to our western civilization of that bedrock idea, inherited from the Romans and enshrined at the center of English common law, of property. John Locke held that the right to property was on a par with those of "life" and "liberty."

Turkish drone strike 'killed PJAK fighters' – not PKK

The nation is today noted for spontaneously taking over other countries' embassies, maintaining whorehouses run by clergymen, involvement in international drug trafficking, and financing sock puppet militias to extend the regime's influence. The word Iran is a cognate form of Aryan. The abbreviation IRGC is the same idea as Stürmabteilung (or SA). The term Supreme Guide is a the modern version form of either Duce or Führer or maybe both. They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
on Tuesday night allegedly killed five members of the Kurdistan Free Life Party (PJAK) — not members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as earlier claimed.

PJAK, an Iranian Kurdish armed opposition group, issued a statement on Friday claiming an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
hit one of its vehicles carrying two fighters and three supporters.

"At 11:45 pm on May 26, two of our fighters were inside a vehicle alongside three of our supporters who were driving in the Assos area of Sifra village," PJAK said in its statement, published by Sterk TV — a media outlet affiliated with the group.

"A Ottoman Turkish drone targeted the vehicle carrying our fighters and supporters and killed all of them inside the vehicle," the statement said.

PJAK named the two fighters as Zinar Brusik and Rebaz Sina, but did not provide names for the three supporters killed in the strike.

The group accused traitors and collaborators of giving up the vehicle’s location to the Ottoman Turkish military. "Such an attack proves that without the hands of the traitors, the enemies will never be able to reach such areas," the statement added.

Initial reports on Tuesday indicated the occupants of the vehicle were members of the PKK, another armed opposition group which has fought a decades-long struggle against the Ottoman Turkish state for greater cultural and political rights for Kurds in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...Qatar's satrapy in Asia Minor...
A statement from Turkey’s Defense Ministry published on Twitter grabbed credit for the strike, and confirmed the killing of five PKK fighters, as part of reconnaissance and surveillance operations over northern Iraq.

Both the PKK and PJAK use the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as a safe haven from which to launch attacks on Ottoman Turkish and Iranian security forces. PJAK is considered the Iranian wing of the PKK, but PJAK claims it is merely linked by shared ideology.

Riot Police, National Guard 'Completely Abandon' Perimeter in Minneapolis, Chased Away by Protesters
[PJ] Townhall’s Julio Rosas is on the ground in Minneapolis this week, reporting on the protests and riots. Tonight he’s reporting that the riot police and the National Guard have abandoned a perimeter they had set up earlier in the day, chased away by the rioters.

For the fourth night in a row, protesters and rioters have descended on Minneapolis to protest the death of George Floyd at the hands of a police officer, who was arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday afternoon.

The city is under a curfew order, but rioters are refusing to disperse.

The situation on the ground is extremely volatile right now. Rosas says riot police shot him with a "non-lethal weapon" as he was kneeling some distance away, observing the scene.

It looked like the economy could have bounced back, so this is a win win for the Trump haters. I am sure that agents provocateurs were dispatched immediately. Sadly some of them are talking heads of the MSM. We have just been stampeded by that crew over the covid virus. You know the results. It seems the policy here, as it was in other cities during the last round of riots, is to try to contain it and let it burn (literally) itself out. That may be the most expedient course in the short run, but eventually it is analogous to paying ransom to hostage takers or paying blackmailers - it will come back for more.

Interesting perspective: Staged Event

These officers were involved with something, I’m not sure exactly what, but something is just not adding up.

I think there is at the very least the “possibility”, that this was a filmed public execution of a black man by a white cop, with the purpose of creating racial tensions and driving a wedge in the growing group of anti deep state sentiment from comon people, that have already been psychologically traumatized by Covid 19 fears.

Historically, in election years and in politically contested areas or in groups, racial or gun violence incidents are becoming common place. Considering the rising approval rating of President Trump in the black community, an event like this was unfortunately “Predictable”

Consider these points and contrast them to every other police brutality incident you've ever seen.

The filmed portion of the incident was about 10 minutes long. In that amount of time, three officers are holding one handcuffed man down. You only know that because of the pictures taken from across the street. You can't see the other two officers in the video because they are behind the vehicle. During 8 minutes of the entire video, the officer has his knee on George Floyd's neck, which is not taught or approved by any law enforcement agency.

Additionally, other than the Asian officer speaking occasionally to the crowd of bystanders, there is no communication from any of the officers to Mr. Floyd. No talking, no shouting. When have you ever seen a police brutality video without police shouting?

Additionally, the police had no goal. They weren't trying to subdue him for arrest, he was already handcuffed and all they needed to do, was place him in the back of the car. There is no plausible explanation for taking him to the ground and having three men on top of a handcuffed man, a knee placed on his neck. Mr. Floyd presented no threat and was not resisting. The only goal that there appeared to be was exactly what happened: “To be filmed brutally killing a black man”.

Think about this, these officers did not care about being filmed, in fact the officer stared into the camera with soulless eyes and an emotionless face, reminiscent of an assassin, as he knowingly killed an American Citizen.

None of the officers spoke among themselves or did they speak to Mr. Floyd. They did not respond to his pleas for life. They just sat and kneeled on him until he was passed out and then waited an additional 4 minutes after Mr. Floyd lost consciousness to ensure that Mr. Floyd was dead and could not be revived.

The bystanders are verbally communicating to the officers, that he isn't breathing. Unlike any other similar incident, you never see the officers getting on police radios. You never see or hear them calling dispatch for backup. No other police units arrive on the scene and strangely enough, the crowd does not seem to grow either.

The scene does not end until an ambulance arrives and they unceremoniously flop him on a gurney. At no point does anyone in a uniform ever check his vitals. “As if they aren't remotely curious about the situation they are in” BTW. who called the ambulance and for what reason? Because if the reason was that Mr. Floyd was having a medical issue, they wouldn't have still been crushing his neck.

Shortly after the video went viral, a fake Facebook page supposedly belonging to the officer, at the center of the murder appears and pictures are uploaded that say "Stand your Ground" and "Trump 2020". A picture of the cop with a red ballcap that says "Make America White Again". A friends list populated with obvious sock accounts and people clearly not his friends. This is the same kind of fake Facebook stunt that happened with a group made to look like support for the men involved with the Ahmed Aubrey case.

Is it mere coincidence that this happens the week after “race” becomes a major political issue after the Biden "You ain't Black" gaffe, started to threaten the black vote the Democrats so desperately count on?

Additionally, there is substantial video evidence to arrest at least one officer now. Why would the local authorities not charge him immediately, unless there was a political advantage not to!

Is it mere coincidence that this happens right about the exact moment the COVID-19 fear campaign falls apart, and after it has psychologically traumatized the entire country and got everyone at each other's throats and suicide attempts are spiking? Is it mere coincidence that this happens after the Auhmed Aubrey case... Which somehow eluded the mainstream media completely until two whole months after he was killed? When has that ever happened? Timing issue? Is it mere coincidence that Supreme Race Baiter Obama was making videos a couple weeks ago connecting COVID with "Systemic Racism"?

FINALLY....Description: Description: ‼️Description: Description: ‼️ this entire scene plays out with the cop car and license plate that says "POLICE". The plate was perfectly framed for maximum subliminal impact. This also means he was literally just 1 foot away from the back seat of the police car and these cops thought it was smarter to kill a black man on camera, than to pick him up and move him one foot into the back of the police car.

Chicago mayor tells Trump 'F-U' after tweet about Minneapolis looting
[FoxNews] Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot blasted President Trump and invoked an expletive Friday in response to his tweet after three days of protests in Minneapolis, Minn., when he called the protesters "THUGS" and tweeted that "when the looting starts, the shooting starts."

“Donald Trump’s comment last night was profoundly dangerous,” Lightfoot said Friday during a news conference to discuss plans to reopen the city. “And we must stand firm in solidarity and say this is totally unacceptable no matter who is the speaker."

“He wants to show failures on the part of Democratic local leaders, to throw red meat to his base," she added, according to WGN9. "His goal is to polarize, to destabilize local government and inflame racist urges. We can absolutely not let him prevail. And I will code what I really want to say to Donald Trump. It’s two words. It begins with F and it ends with U.”

Afghanistan
Afghan Defense Ministry Claims Taliban Violated Ceasefire
And we are all so shocked they didn’t keep their word
[ToloNews] The Afghan Ministry of Defense (MoD) on Friday accused the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
of having violated the ceasefire that was put in place on Saturday despite the group's assurances to fully implement the ceasefire with the Afghan forces.

According to Afghan defense officials, at least 14 members of the Afghan Border Force were killed in an attack by the Taliban in Dand-e-Patan district in the eastern province of Paktia on Thursday evening, despite a ceasefire that continues between the two sides following the initial Eid agreement.

Three other soldiers were maimed in the attack, said the Ministry of Defense.

The Afghan government has again called on the group to respect the ceasefire so that the way is paved for the start of intra-Afghan talks.

Previously, the Taliban accused the Afghan forces of targeting civilians in an Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
in southern Zabul province.

"The Afghan government released a large number of Taliban prisoners to help the ceasefire move on and to help start direct talks with the government," said Sediq Sediqqi, a front man for President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money...
Afghan officials believe that an extension of the ceasefire will help the country reach long-term peace.

"The Afghans may reach to peace if the intra-Afghan talks are started simultaneously with the ceasefire," said Mohammad Yasin, the governor of Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
Ordinary Afghans have also been pushing for the two sides to agree on a long-term ceasefire.

"We want the ceasefire that was announced during the Eid to continue," said Ahmad Ali, a resident in Kabul.

"The war has gone on enough now. How long should we face poverty and destruction, we are at war for 40 years--its enough now," said Abdul Wase, a resident in Kabul.

The Eid ceasefire--from May 24 to May 26-- was announced by the Taliban and reciprocated by the Afghan government, and, according to figures provided by the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission, civilian casualties dropped by 80 percent.

There were reports of two security incidents in each of the three days of Eid, but they were significantly less than recent averages.

According to the AIHRC, before the ceasefire, up to 30 Afghans were killed and maimed as a result of war and violence in the country on a daily basis.

Zabul in the south, Farah in the west and Parwan in the center of Afghanistan have witnessed festivities between government forces and the Taliban in the last 24 hours, according to officials and local sources.

14 Border Forces Killed in ‘Taliban Attack’ Despite Ceasefire
[ToloNews] The Ministry of Defense in a statement on Friday said that at least 14 members of the Afghan Border Force were killed in an attack by the Taliban

in Dand-e-Patan district in the eastern province of Paktia on Thursday evening, despite a ceasefire that continues between the two sides.

The statement reads that the Taliban violated the ceasefire and attacked the Border Forces outpost in the district, adding that the attack was fended off by Afghan forces and the Taliban suffered heavy casualties.

Three other members of the Border Force were maimed in the attack.
Al Ahram adds:
The Taliban took responsibility for Thursday's attack in Paktia province, calling it a ``defensive action,'' without elaborating.

Afghan Govt Releases 164 Hizb-e-Islami Prisoners
[ToloNews] The Afghan government on Friday released 164 members of Hizb-e-Islami from Bagram and Pul-e-Charkhi jails, members of the commission implementing the peace deal between Hizb-e-Islami and the government said on Friday.

However,
death is not the end. There remains the litigation over the estate...
some of those released from the jails claimed to be members of the Taliban
...Arabic for students...
Mohammad Afzal is one of the those released today. He served in the Afghan National Army (ANA) for eight years and later was arrested at Kabul airport for ties with the Taliban.

"I was given 20 years in prison. I spent 11 years, but I was granted freedom for the remaining 9 years under the (Hekmatyar--government agreement) process, and I came out," said Mohammad Afzal, a resident of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
He claimed to have served in the Afghan National Army for eight years.

"I was serving in the army for eight years, then the incident happened and I was arrested," added Mohammad Afzal.

Gul Rahman is another inmate who was also placed in durance vile
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
for having ties with the Taliban.

He spent four years in jail.

"Not only for Moslems--peace is vital for the entire world. We always support peace," said Gul Rahman.

Gulbuddin Hekmatyar
... who used to be known in intelligence circles as The Most Evil Man in the World but who now seems merely run-of-the-mill evil...
, leader of the Hizb-e-Islami party, signed the peace agreement with the Afghan government in September 2016.

The process of releasing the prisoners was delayed for months after human rights
...not to be confused with individual rights, mind you...
organizations criticized the government for agreeing to the move, stating that the political prisoners had been involved in insurgency incidents that killed civilians.

Hizb-e-Islami claims that there are 3,000 of its members being held in Afghan prisons.

The prisoners were released based on a peace agreement signed between President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money...
and Hizb-e-Islami leader Gulbuddin Hekmatyar in September 2016. Hekmatyar returned to the country after 20 years.

According to Article 11 of the peace agreement, after an assessment of their documents, all prisoners of Hizb-e-Islami who are accused of political and security crimes and are granted ’the right of people’ — a legal term which is used for those who don’t carry any complaint from members of the public in a court.

Science & Technology
New hydroxychloroquine study: Early outpatient treatment is the most effective for treatment of COVID-19 patients, Dr. Harvey A Risch of Yale University says
[TechStartUps] According to a new study published in American Journal of Epidemiology, early outpatient treatment is the most effective for treatment of coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
patients. The study, which was led by Dr. Harvey A Risch of Yale University, suggests that late stage studies missed the point about effective usage of hydroxychloroquine. Dr. Risch says immediate and early ramping-up of treatment for high-risk COVID-19 patients is key to controlling the coronavirus pandemic crisis.

To date, more than 1.6 million Americans have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 and >10 times that number carry antibodies to it. High-risk patients presenting with progressing symptomatic disease have only hospitalization treatment with its high mortality.

According to the abstract of the study, which has not yet been peer-reviewed, Dr. Risch said an outpatient treatment that prevents hospitalization is desperately needed. To date, two candidate medications have been widely discussed: remdesivir, and hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin. "Remdesivir has shown mild effectiveness in hospitalized inpatients, but no trials have been registered in outpatients. Hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin has been widely misrepresented in both clinical reports and public media, and outpatient trials results are not expected until September," Dr. Harvey A Risch of Yale University, said.

In a 29-page report, the study suggests that early outpatient illness is very different than later hospitalized florid disease and the treatments differ. Evidence about use of hydroxychloroquine alone, or of hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin in inpatients, is irrelevant concerning efficacy of the pair in early high-risk outpatient disease.

Five studies, including two controlled clinical trials, have demonstrated significant major outpatient treatment efficacy.

Hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin has been used as standard-of-care in more than 300,000 older adults with multicomorbidities, with estimated proportion diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmias attributable to the medications 47/100,000 users, of which estimated mortality is [less than] 20%, 9/100,000 users, compared to the 10,000.

Rioters Decline To Sign Colin Kaepernick
[Babylon Bee] MINNEAPOLIS, MN—Colin Kaepernick arrived at the Minneapolis riots last night, saying he was excited to be a part of the looting and violence.

Kaepernick tried out for the riots by throwing bricks into windows but missed every time. He was able to rush a Molotov cocktail into a target window and then spike it on the ground, but then he caught fire. Finally, in a last-ditch effort to get selected for one of the riot squads, he filmed a workout video and sent it to various protester organizations but hadn't heard back as of publishing time.

"While we appreciate Kaepernick's enthusiasm, we need someone who can lob a Molotov cocktail accurately," said a representative for the rioters. "We wish him the best of luck in his future rioting career. We believe Kaepernick will land on his feet with another rioting organization. Maybe Chicago or Louisville will want him."

The former quarterback quickly blamed his failed rioting career on racism.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Minneapolis Burning
[CityJournal] Once again‐as in Baltimore, following the 2015 death of Freddie Gray, and long before then, in Watts, Newark, and Detroit‐the actions of rioters in an American city are being described as protests, or, by PBS, no less, as an "uprising." Even Minneapolis's hapless mayor, Jacob Frey‐under siege as his city burns‐graces the violence with understanding. "There is a lot of pain and anger in our city," said Frey, adding that "this is what happens" when long-standing issues of race and poverty go unaddressed. It's "not just because of five minutes of horror," Frey noted in a press conference, referring to the images of George Floyd gasping for air beneath a police officer's knee, "but 400 years."

Frey rightly called for the arrest of the officer, Derek Chauvin, and Chauvin has now been arrested. But Frey was wrong to ascribe anything close to justifiable motives to those who have torched a police precinct building and a youth center and looted stores serving their own community. It's as if we have learned nothing over two generations about what happens when public officials give license to the lawless, letting marauders proceed under cover of high-mindedness. We expect as much from inflammatory activists like Al Sharpton but deserve better from elected officials charged with protecting property, lives, and livelihoods.

It's time, again, to cite the work of political scientist Edward Banfield, whose seminal book about urban life, The Unheavenly City, includes a chapter, both relevant and prescient, entitled, "Rioting Mainly for Fun and Profit." In the wake of the 1960s' riots‐43 people died in the deadliest, in Detroit in 1967‐Banfield asserted that it is "naïve to think that efforts to end racial injustice and to eliminate poverty, slums, and unemployment will have an appreciable effect upon the amount of rioting that will be done in the next decade or so." This before the full rollout of the Great Society‐and, long afterward, the riots in Los Angeles, Baltimore, and now Minneapolis, where a $30 million affordable-housing project was just destroyed. Banfield's lesson was plain: Young men, not stopped swiftly and sternly by police, will be emboldened to loot and set buildings afire, simple for the anarchic thrill of doing so. The failure to distinguish between protest with purpose and lawlessness would fan the flames.

Banfield would likely judge Mayor Frey harshly, not least for withdrawing police from the city's Third Precinct and permitting rioting to go on in order to avoid confrontation. Yes, investigate the incident; yes, take stock of the Minneapolis police department. But don't dignify violence by calling it a protest, and don't abdicate your responsibility as a public official to uphold the rule of law and civil order.

Of course, Floyd's life matters‐but so do the hopes, dreams, bank accounts, and insurance costs of the small-business owners, including African-Americans, who provide goods and services to that precinct. Long before the death of Floyd, Frey's administration had made the idea that Minneapolis suffered under a legacy of racism part of its governing message. It's a bridge too far to connect such rhetoric with the current explosion of violence, but it does prove Banfield's point. No one truly concerned with the aspirations‐and grievances‐of American blacks should confuse riots with protests.

#1  Banfield would likely judge Mayor Frey harshly, not least for withdrawing police from the city's Third Precinct and permitting rioting to go on in order to avoid confrontation.

I wonder if the mayor's choices were constrained by the tools at his disposal. The Minneapolis police force doesn't seem to be professional or competent. Justine Diamond's death at the hands of a poorly vetted and trained Somali cop comes to mind. I seem to have a vague recollection of some sort of affirmative action kerfuffle, but I could be wrong.

Maybe the MPD lacked the manpower to deal with the rioters. Maybe the mayor feared the MPD lacked the competence to suppress a riot without turning it into a bloodbath for one or both sides. Or maybe he just punked out.
Posted by: SteveS || 05/30/2020 0:30 Comments || Top||

#2  Doh! Forgot to mention another option: the National Guard. If the cops can't handle the situation, calling in the Guard seems obvious. But in this case, since Trump already suggested it, that course of action is off the table.

The City of Minneapolis has been run by the Democratic Farmer Labor Party since 1978.

It did, though.

They lost the next two Prez elections, but the generation of '68 marched through the institutions and now have (or have bequeathed to their heirs) the commanding heights of the culture, politics, law and even key sectors of the economy.

At some point a critical mass of the populace will either figure out that elections only have consequences when the left wants them to -- or the left will win everything.

Posted by: charger || 05/30/2020 13:21 Comments || Top||

#30  ^ there's an older conservative professor of German at UC Santa Cruz who has an interesting theory about the 1968 generation's long march through the institutions. He says it was a freak (pun intended) event that happened only because the anti-war / hippy / New Left movement corresponded with the unprecedented and enormous increase in college enrollment during the 1960s. His claim is that, absent such a huge increase in numbers overall, the relatively small far-left minority would never have attained anywhere near so much influence over our culture and society as they did.

If he's correct, and if as seems likely we are about to see a historic decline in the US college population over this decade, then it could well be the case that we've passed the high water mark of leftist influence and we will see our culture and political center of gravity move back toward something more normal.

Hope his thesis is right.

#38  The Anti-Riot Act (18 US Code Section 2101) makes it a federal crime to travel across interstate lines for the purpose of urging or instigating violence in furtherance of a riot.

The left is trying to throw shade at Barr for invoking this, but they're not likely to succeed: it's been upheld recently by a liberal Clinton-appointed judge in Virginia -- because it was used, ironically, by prosecutors against two white rioters in the Charlottesville riots.

That judge trashed their arguments to dismiss with a very strong defense of the Anti-Riot Act here -- this opinion seems like a fine precedent for future reference.

Mayor of Minneapolis imposes curfew between hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m.
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

The Mayor of the US city of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, signed on Friday an emergency regulation imposing a curfew between the hours of 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, as violent protests sweep the city after the police killing of George Floyd.

George Floyd, an unarmed 46-year-old black man who died after a white police officer knelt on his neck while the Floyd pleaded that he can’t breathe, sparked three days of violent protests in the city.

The incident was caught on video, after a bystander filmed it. The cellphone footage showed Floyed repeatedly moaning and gasping while he pleaded to Chauvin, “Please, I can’t breathe.” After several minutes, Floyd gradually grows quiet and ceases to move.

The officer, Derek Chauvin, has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

“Chauvin had his knee on Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, and an autopsy found the combined impact of his being restrained by the police, underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death,” Reuters reported citing the charging document.

If Chauvin is convicted of the murder charge, he will face up to 25 years in prison.

Chauvin, along with three other officers, were fired from the police department over Floyd's death.

TRUMP CALLS FLOYD’S FAMILY
US President Donald Trump said on Friday he had spoken with Floyd’s family, and described Floyd’s killing as a “terrible event.”

“It’s a terrible thing. We all saw what we saw… It should never be allowed to happen. We’re determined that justice be served,” Trump said during a press conference in the White House.

Trump had tweeted earlier in the day, about the protests in Minneapolis, saying: “These THUGS are dishonoring the memory of George Floyd, and I won’t let that happen. Just spoke to Governor Tim Walz and told him that the Military is with him all the way. Any difficulty and we will assume control but, when the looting starts, the shooting starts.”

Twitter hid the President’s tweet saying it “violated the Twitter Rules about glorifying violence.”

Hours after his “shooting starts” tweet, he posted another saying: “Looting leads to shooting, and that’s why a man was shot and killed in Minneapolis on Wednesday night - or look at what just happened in Louisville with 7 people shot. I don’t want this to happen, and that’s what the expression put out last night means.”

He added: “It was spoken as a fact, not as a statement. It’s very simple, nobody should have any problem with this other than the haters, and those looking to cause trouble on social media. Honor the memory of George Floyd!”

While the officer seems likely to have been guilty of excessive force and assault (battery) he did not commit murder or manslaughter. They are overcharging him as an expedient way to calm public disorder. Charges against the others would be highly suspect

A searchable jail roster is available online.

Speaking Saturday, Minneapolis police spokesman John Elder, however, said that sometimes people arrested will provide false information. He says background checks are showing some people arrested have records from other areas.

Meanwhile, St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter is backtracking after saying that 100 percent of the people arrested for causing disorder in his city were from out of state.

Three-quarters of the people arrested in St. Paul had Minnesota addresses, according to data provided to FOX 9 by police.

Of the 18 total arrests, 12 had Minnesota addresses, four were from out of state, and two were unknown.

Saturday evening, Carter acknowledged his earlier statement was inaccurate

Minnesota's "community" leaders are now claiming that the violence was caused by - get this - out-of-state white supremacists!

...They were reverends and rabbis and people of the Islamic faith. They spoke in Somali, Spanish and English. And they pleaded, at times through tears, for their hurting communities to stay home Saturday night to prevent more pain.

Called together by Gov. Tim Walz, a group of Minnesota community leaders spent nearly two televised hours Saturday morning acknowledging the outrage over the death of George Floyd. ..."White people from other communities are coming into my community...as if it wasn't bad enough already,"

[??? 'Bad enough already'? Because of your own people?]

...said Justin Terrell, executive director of the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage. "Go home now. The fascists on the plane right now, turn around."

Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan, a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe, ... was a community organizer for more than two decades, marching in the streets after any fatal police encounter.

"That space on 38th and Chicago is sacred ground, and people should be able to come together on that sacred ground and mourn and grieve and demand change and justice," Flanagan said.

"In this moment, we cannot, because there are detractors.
There are white supremacists. There are anarchists. There are people who are burning down the institutions that are core to our identity and who we are."

US announces $3 million reward for info on new ISIS leader
[PUBLISH.TWITTER]

The U.S. State Department has announced a $3 million reward for information that leads to the whereabouts or arrest of the new leader of the Islamic State (ISIS/ISIL/IS/Daesh), Muhammad Ramadan.

The State Department indicated that Muhammad Ramadan, who was born in Jordan, is considered one of the most prominent officials in the terrorist organization.

They said, “He played an essential role in the propaganda operations of (ISIS) in order to recruit and incite elements and make them extremists, and supervised the planning, coordination and production of many videos, propaganda leaflets and online platforms that published violent scenes of torture and mass executions of civilians.”

The reward will be provided for information that leads to the location or seizure of Ramadan under the State Department’s “Rewards for Justice” program.

Since the death of the former leader and founder, Ibrahim Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, the terrorist group has remained relatively silent, except for one brief recording by the new ISIS commander.

Libyan Interior Ministry probes murder of 30 illegal immigrants, one Libyan national
[Libya Observer] The Libyan Interior Ministry is investigating, through Mizda town's security department, the murder of a Libyan national and 30 illegal immigrants colonists in the town.

In a statement on Thursday, the Interior Ministry said a Libyan national in Mizda, accused of human trafficking, was killed by illegal immigrants colonists while he was smuggling them to coastal cities.

The Ministry added that the relatives of the Libyan national took the law to their own hands and committed vendetta crimes by murdering 26 people from Bangladesh and four from African countries, in addition to injuring 11 others.

The Interior Ministry instructed Mizda security department to take the necessary legal action to arrest the perpetrators and bring them to justice, saying whatever the motive behind the mass murder crime was, the law doesn't permit people to take matters into their own hands.

Arrest warrants issued for women who broke into house, 'tortured' actor Uzma Khan
[DAWN] A judicial magistrate in Lahore on Friday issued arrest warrants for three women who angrily stormed a house in the city's DHA neighbourhood where actor Uzma Khan was staying and allegedly tortured Uzma and her sister.

Video clips showing torture carried out on the actor and her sister, allegedly by the daughters of property tycoon Malik Riaz Hussain, had sparked outrage and calls for justice on social media earlier this week.

A first information report (FIR) of the incident was registered on Wednesday on Uzma's complaint. The persons nominated in the FIR include Riaz's daughters Pashmina Malik and Ambar Malik, Amina Usman Malik (wife of Usman Malik), and 15 unidentified gunnies — the private guards with whom the three women had entered the house seen in video clips.

Deciphering Hezbollah chief Nasrallah’s rhetoric: Resistance is no longer a priority
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] In an interview with Hezbollah’s Noor Radio on Tuesday, on the anniversary of the liberation of southern Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel.

U.S. Sentry alerts against corruption by South Sudan senior military leader

[Sudan Tribune] U.S. watchdog group, The Sentry, has alerted against major corruption and money laundering by high ranking military leaders in South Sudan.

In a report released on Wednesday “Making a Killing: South Sudanese Military Leaders’ Wealth, Explained,” the sentry said that the fact the engagement in business activities of the last four army chiefs of staff and three opposition militia leaders in South Sudan is "demonstrating red flags for money laundering and corruption".

The report examines the commercial and financial activities of former Army Chiefs of Staff Gabriel Jok Riak, James Hoth Mai, Paul Malong Awan, and Oyay Deng Ajak, along with top-ranking military chiefs Salva Mathok Gengdit, Bol Akot Bol, Garang Mabil, and Marial Chanuong.

Militia leaders linked to major instances of violence both before and during the civil war — Gathoth Gatkuoth Hothnyang, Johnson Olony, and David Yau Yau — are also profiled in the report.

One of the Sentry investigators Shannon Mizzi said the lack of transparency and anti-corruption measures in the country allow its military leaders to easily divert funds and conclude corrupt arms deals.

"Many of South Sudan’s senior military leaders have amassed enormous wealth. Their posts provided easy access to government funds that appear to have financed luxurious lifestyles for relatives overseas in some instances," Mizzi said.

The report comes out weeks after the announcement by the World Bank last April of a $7.6 grant in support of South Sudan efforts to fight COVID-19 pandemic.

South Sudan medical infrastructure and response capacities have been already stressed by civil war and weakened by the corruption that has benefitted military officials and top political leaders, says the report.

“With three times as many generals as physicians, South Sudan’s medical system is completely unprepared for COVID-19," said John Prendergast, Co-Founder of The Sentry.

For his part, J.R. Mailey suggested to take a proactive response to ensure that the international support in response for COVID-19 pandemic would not be diverted by the country military officials to their private accounts.

Iran prepares for major confrontation by heavily arming IRGC in Persian Gulf
[ALMASDARNEWS] The commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), General Hussein Salami, announced that the IRGC’s naval forces have received 112 new warships.

Salami said during the handover ceremony of 112 new warships in Bandar Abbas that this step is part of the birth of a new naval force in the Gulf called ’Iran’.

The commander of the Revolutionary Guards said in a speech: "These boats will increase the offensive power of the Iranian navy in the Gulf waters."

He explained that the strengthening of military force is part of the road map, which is being pursued by the Revolutionary Guards, adding that "Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites. Formerly a fairly civilized nation ruled by a Shah, it became a victim of Islamic revolution in 1979. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
is seeking to break the will of the enemy by continuing to produce militarily and aggressively."
