[France24] A British journalist and a Brazilian indigenous expert have gone missing in a remote region of the Amazon rainforest after receiving threats, authorities and indigenous-rights groups said Monday, raising fears for their safety.
Veteran foreign correspondent Dom Phillips, 57, went missing while researching a book in the Brazilian Amazon's Javari Valley with respected indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, said The Guardian newspaper, where Phillips has been a longtime contributor.
The pair had traveled by boat to Jaburu lake, in the northern state of Amazonas near Brazil's border with Peru, and were expected to return to the city of Atalaia do Norte by around 9:00 am Sunday, two rights groups said in a statement.
The men had "received threats in the field" last week, said the groups, the Union of Indigenous Organizations of the Javari Valley (UNIVAJA) and the Observatory for the Human Rights of Isolated and Recently Contacted Indigenous Peoples (OPI).
They did not give further details, but Pereira, an expert at Brazil's indigenous affairs agency FUNAI with deep knowledge of the region, has regularly received threats from loggers and miners trying to invade isolated indigenous groups' land.
FUNAI told AFP it was collaborating with local authorities on the search effort. It added that Pereira was on leave from the agency "to pursue personal interests."
Phillips and Pereira had traveled to the region around a FUNAI monitoring base, and reached Jaburu lake Friday evening, UNIVAJA and OPI said.

And they can use law enforcement to help them carry out their forced quarantine or isolation orders, so the knock on your door could very well be the sheriff or police coming to remove you from your home or to "check in" on you to ensure you are locked down in your home, isolated, in accordance with the Health Department’s order against you.
This dystopian horror sounds unbelievable to an American. That the government has the ability to control one’s every move is unnatural to us. Politicians and bureaucrats being able to have unbridled power to tell you where you can and cannot go, what you can and cannot do, and who you can and cannot see is the very antithesis of what our country stands for. It flies in the face of "liberty and justice for all." After all, we are supposed to be a nation of governance of the people, by the people, and for the people.
And yet, the governor of New York and her Department of Health have promulgated a dystopian regulation that does all of that and more. The regulation is called "Isolation and Quarantine Procedures" and can be found at 10 NYCRR 2.13. It is a clear violation of the Separation of Powers because the governor is not supposed to make law, nor can an agency. Only the legislature can make law and agencies can only issue regulations that the legislature empowers them to issue. Simply put, an agency cannot just make up rules on its own whim. It must have a directive from the legislature to do so.
Remember from grade-school History class: We have three branches of government (Judicial, Executive and Legislative), all are co-equal with one another, and each has its own separate powers and duties. The governor and her agencies are in the Executive Branch of government. The Executive Branch enforces the laws that the Legislative Branch passes.
But in this instance, the Executive Branch has usurped the power of the Legislative Branch by making this regulation, which is actually an impermissible law—despite the State calling it a "regulation." The important fact is that there is no legislative enabling statute authorizing the Department of Health to make this "regulation"—not to mention the fact that the Executive Branch’s "regulation" violates numerous constitutional rights as well as New York State laws.
So, on behalf of a group of New York State Legislators together with Uniting NYS, a citizens’ group, I am suing the Governor of New York and her Department of Health to stop their "quarantine camp" regulation! The NYS Legislators standing with Uniting NYS in this lawsuit are true leaders: Senator George Borrello, Assemblyman Chris Tague, and Assemblyman Mike Lawler. They’re willing to stand up for We the People, and to help preserve the constitutional rights upon which our founding fathers based our great Nation. Additionally, Assemblyman Andrew Goodell, Assemblyman Joseph Giglio, and Assemblyman William Barclay are also publicly supporting our lawsuit by writing an Amicus Brief supporting our case.
Our lawsuit is the first and only lawsuit of its kind in the country, and its importance cannot be understated. If this "regulation" is allowed to stand, then it will signal to all agencies that they can make regulations that conflict with the Constitution and with state laws.
If that happens, then the Legislative Branch of government will no longer be a co-equal branch. Instead, it will become subservient to the Executive Branch because the agencies in the Executive Branch could simply make a rule that conflicts with our laws (or the Constitution) whenever they wanted. It would render our laws useless. It would lead to tyranny and it is We The People who suffer under a tyrannical regime.
Think about it: if we don’t win this lawsuit and quarantine camps become a new standard of government control over the people in New York, then it will spread like wildfire across America. Other states will see what New York is doing and they will follow suit. The floodgates will open and, once open, those gates may never close. So, we must win this fight, not just for New Yorkers, but for all Americans!

The Kremlin-backed mayor of the Ukrainian town of Enerhodar was standing on his mother’s porch when a powerful blast struck, leaving him critically wounded. A week later, about 75 miles away, a car packed with explosives rocked the office of another Russian-appointed official in the occupied southern city of Melitopol.
In a rarity, both Ukrainian and Russian officials confirmed the blasts, which struck deep inside Russian-controlled territory. And both explosions appeared to be the work of what analysts say is a growing partisan resistance movement — one fueled by increasingly brutal Russian repression and worsening humanitarian conditions.
By their very nature, the clandestine activities of any insurgency are murky and often impossible to verify independently. It is as much in the interest of Ukrainians to play up talk of rebellion as it is for Russians to play it down.
But the explosion that injured the Enerhodar mayor, Andrei Shevchik, is one of more than a dozen high-profile attacks in recent weeks that analysts say indicate increased partisan activity aimed at Russian occupation forces in the Kherson and Zaporizka regions of southern Ukraine.
Stretching tens of thousands of square miles from eastern Ukraine to Russian-occupied Crimea and into Russia itself, those regions were among the first to fall under Russian control following the invasion of Ukraine in late February. Many of their towns and cities were spared the wholesale destruction unleashed by Russian forces elsewhere. In recent days, Ukrainian forces have launched a series of counterattacks in the regions.
In the past month, Ukrainian partisans claim, insurgents have attacked Russian trains and killed dozens of Russian soldiers, as well as supporting the Ukrainian military's counterattacks. Their claims are impossible to independently verify. The partisans also have established a virtual Center of National Resistance, which features instructions for things like setting up ambushes and what to do if arrested.
Alexander Motyl, a historian and Ukraine expert at Rutgers University, has scoured publicly available statements about possible insurgent activity. He said that the data suggests it is growing.
"It is, of course, possible that Ukrainian special forces may have been involved in some of these actions; it is also likely that the data are incomplete," he wrote for the online journal 1945. "Even so, the number of guerrilla actions is impressive and bespeaks a trend toward ever-greater partisan activity."
[Yahoo]\ A Chinese fighter jet veered in front of an Australian military plane and fired off a cloud of debris that entered its engine, Australia's defense ministry said.
The incident happened on May 26 in international airspace over the South China Sea, the ministry said Sunday. The South China Sea is an area where China has tried to assert dominance to gain a strategic advantage in recent years.
Richard Marles, Australia's defense minister, told 9News that a Chinese J-16 fighter jet cut across an Australian P-8 maritime-surveillance aircraft and released "chaff," which are small pieces of metal debris used to confuse missiles.
"The J-16 then accelerated and cut across the nose of the P-8, settling in front of the P-8 at a very close distance," Marles said.
"At that moment it then released a bundle of chaff, which contains small pieces of aluminum, some of which were ingested into the engine of the P-8 aircraft," he added. "Quite obviously, this is very dangerous."
Peter Layton, a former Royal Australian Air Force officer, told CNN that the incident would have forced the P-8 to return to base, though the defense ministry did not give details as to the state of the aircraft.
Chinese aircraft regularly fly close to or try and interfere with foreign aircraft that fly over the South China Sea.

...The chaff I worked with looked very much like small, thin strips of magnetic recording tape (what used to be in a 'cassette' or '8-Track', for you younger 'Burgers ;) )with a reflective backing. What probably saved the P-8 from a really short, exciting flight is that a chaff cloud spreads out fast - the engine probably didn't ingest that much of it, and it likely melted once it was in. The engine probably stayed running but even if the A/C shut it down out of an abundance of caution, the P-8 flies quite nicely on one. The engine is probably done, though.
[ET] President Barack Obama approved a statement by the U.S. intelligence community in October 2016 accusing Russia of stealing emails from the Democratic National Committee (DNC), despite the U.S. government not having obtained the DNC server images crucial to ascertaining whether Moscow was involved in the theft.
FBI emails recently made public during the trial against now-acquitted DNC attorney Michael Sussmann show the bureau was still in the process of requesting images of the DNC servers on Oct. 13, 2016. The server images, which are equivalent to a virtual copy of the alleged crime scene, were taken by private cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
On Oct. 7, six days before CrowdStrike agreed to mail the server images to the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) released a statement accusing Russia of hacking U.S. political organizations and disseminating emails allegedly stolen through the hack. The statement was approved and encouraged by Obama, according to then-DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson.
"The president approved the statement. I know he wanted us to make the statement. So that was very definitely a statement by the United States government, not just Jim Clapper and me," Johnson told the House Intelligence Committee in June 2017, referring to then-Director of National Intelligence James Clapper.

Funny you should mention Crowdstrike. Even funnier how there always seems to be a Ukrainian connection.
CrowdStrike has ties to the Obama team, is friends with Hillary Clinton, former Ukraine president Petro Poroshenko, and connected to Ukrainian oligarch Victor Pinchuk, another friend of the DNC and someone who donated $10 million to the Clinton Foundation.
Tying it all together, the CrowdStrike document (if the full report ever existed) may have been one more element of the DNC/Deep State effort to end the Trump Presidency before it started If everything was above board—why didn’t the FBI demand to examine the DNC server or the entire CrowdStrike report?
CrowdStrike has a history of lying about Russia. In March of 2017, the Voice of America VOA caught CrowdStrike creating a bogus and unrelated hacking charge against Russia, and making up the facts to prove its veracity. It seems that CrowdStrike is as politically motivated as everyone else in Washington, D.C. The VOA caught CrowdStrike lying about a claim of Russian hacking damaging Ukrainian technology. There was no hacking to blame on Russia or anyone else. The company that the DNC and FBI relied upon not only made up a crime that didn’t exist but they blamed it on Putin’s Russia. This mistake is especially relevant because CrowdStrike accused the Russians of using the same software to hack Ukraine as they supposedly used in hacking the DNC. Shouldn’t that call into question CrowdStrike ’s report? At the very least that should have motivated the FBI to get a copy of the entire report about the DNC and investigate whether it was accurate?

In turn, China wasted no time attacking the secretary who barely had time to mention human rights abuses and incursions into Taiwan airspace.

We have metal and rare earth mines, too. They just had been ignored in recent years in favour of letting other countries like Russia and various Third World nations exploit their much cheaper labour and much lower safety and health standards to provide the materials at lower cost. But if the charged price goes up or the stuff continues to be made unavailable, it will be worth starting up our mines again.
And the world will benefit from having more sources and greater reserves in case of problems.

The world's economic inter-dependencies are manifold and mutual. Sanctions have large network effects.

The pandemic and the war taught me something I sort of knew, but not really. It is one thing to say that the world is interconnected, as a cliché. It is quite another to observe what actually happens on the ground when those connections get torn apart.
Russia has more wheat than it can eat, and more oil than it can burn. Russia is a provider of primary and secondary commodities, on which the world has become dependent. Oil and gas are the biggest sources of Russian export revenues. But our dependency is most acute in other areas: food and also rare metals and rare earths.
Russia is not a monopolist in any of the categories. But when the largest exporters of those commodities disappears, the rest of the world experiences physical shortages and rising prices.
Russia is the world largest exporter of gas, accounting for just under 20% of global exports.
Russia is the largest exporter of oil, after Saudi Arabia, and accounts for 11% of world exports.
Russia is the largest exporter of fertilisers, and of wheat. Russia and Ukraine together account for almost a third of global wheat exports.
Russia is the world’s largest exporter of palladium, a metal that is critical in the production of catalytic converters and fuel cells.
Russia is also the largest world exporter of nickel, which is used in batteries, and in the production for hybrid cars. German industry is warning that it is reliant not only on Russian gas, but on other critical supplies from Russia.
Did we think this through? Did the foreign ministries that drew up the sanctions discuss at any point what we would do if Russia were to blockade the Black Sea and not allow Ukrainian wheat to leave the ports? Did we develop an agreed-upon response to Russian food blackmail? Or did we think we can adequately address a global starvation crisis by pointing the finger at Putin?
The lockdown taught us a lot about our vulnerability to supply chain shocks. It has reminded Europeans that there have only two routes to ship goods en masse to Asia and back: either by container, or by rail through Russia. We had no plan for a pandemic, no plan for a war, and no plan for when both are happening at the same time. The containers are stuck in Shanghai. The railways closed because of the war.
Economics sanctions work when the target is small: South Africa in the 1980s, Iran, North Korea. Russia is much larger. The relevant size indicator is not GDP. The GDP metric ignores network effects, which are sufficiently large to render the instrument of economic sanctions unsustainable.
Alternative sources exist for each and every one of those Russian commodities, but if you cut world supply by a permanent 10, 20 or 40%, depending on the commodity, you cannot physically generate the same output that we generate now at the same prices. The economy reacts through higher prices and falling demand and supply.
I have concluded that we are all too connected to be able to impose sanctions on each other without incurring massive self-harm. You may argue that it is worth it If you do, you sound like the tenured economics professor who argues that a rise in unemployment is a price worth paying..

Fifty have advanced to a development stage, with ten having launched a CBDC. Communist China has piloted a CBDC planned for launch in 2023. The European Central Bank plans to introduce a "digital euro" by mid-decade.
Of G7 countries, the U.K. and the U.S. are the furthest behind. Think Brexit; think Trumpism. These are the places where globalism has received the most pushback. The Bidenistas have responded. "Joe Biden" signed an executive order calling for the "responsible development" of a digital currency.
Nineteen of G20 countries are working on CBDCs, with 16 in development or ready for the pilot stage. Included in this list are South Korea, Japan, India, and Russia.

I fail to see sedition in trying to get Congress to refuse to certify the election. Now, if it was an armed assault that would be different, but the whole January 6 thing was just an attempt to be heard- a petition of the government with grievances (though in violation of some government rules against petitioning them.) The worst crimes would be some vandalism and a couple of assault cases.

My understanding is that Tarrio was willing to cooperate with FBI but eventually found their focus on White supremacism a bunch of BS and broke off all contact. Since then the Fed has been harassing him and Biden has made it his personal mission to destroy the organization as his own "denazification" program. I believe they intend to broadcast specifically the trial of those PBs now in custody as a shot trial that will be presented as an indictment of an entire demographic in this country.

"If Hochstein does not respond and if no results are reached, then Cabinet must convene to take a national unanimous decision to amend Decree 6433 and send it to the United Nations," Berri said.
The Decree 6433 is based on a 2009 delineation undertaken by the Lebanese army. An assessment of the 2009 demarcation by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) proposed two potential lines that would add 300 or 1,430 square kilometers to the old 2009 demarcation. The second line is known as Line 29.
“The resistance is practicing positive silence and the Lebanese stance must remain firm,” Bayram, who is close to Hizbullah, told al-Jadeed TV.
“President (Michel) Aoun knows very well how to act in these situations and he has the sufficient wisdom,” Bayram added, describing the stances of Aoun and caretaker PM Najib Miqati as “advanced.”
“The resistance does not want to impose the war and peace decision; it is the enemy that is rather imposing it and the resistance will act according to the state’s decision and orientations,” Bayram went on to say.
“We don’t want war and we don’t wish for it, but as Lebanese we have all agreed that we have maritime rights and resources and the drums of war would beat according to the Israeli enemy’s actions,” the minister added, noting that “Lebanon possesses a very strong card that says that the enemy cannot extract its oil as long as we haven’t done the same.”
As for Washington’s mediation, Bayram said his party “does not trust American mediations,” because “they have always been in Israel’s favor.”
The minister also noted that Hizbullah has learned that Aoun “has asked the Army Command to clarify where the Greek ship will be positioned in order to act accordingly.”
The remarks come after media reports said Sunday that the Greek-owned Energean Power FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading unit) had crossed the so-called offshore Line 29 that is disputed by Lebanon.
Aoun, Miqati want US mediation after Israel gas ship move
[AnNahar] President Michel Aoun and Caretaker PM Najib Miqati agreed on Monday to invite U.S. mediator Amos Hochstein to visit Beirut in order to resume the stalled negotiations over the maritime demarcation with Israel, the Presidency said.
The two leaders agreed that the demarcation must be completed "as soon as possible in order to avoid any escalation," after a gas drilling ship had entered a disputed sea area, sparking Lebanese condemnation.
Aoun and Miqati also decided to make diplomatic calls with the major world powers and the United Nations to explain Lebanon's adherence to its rights and maritime resources.
"Any gas drilling carried out by Israel in a disputed area is considered a provocative and hostile activity, threatening peace and obstructing the demarcation negotiations led by the U.S.," the statement said.

I remember how pissed off I was about the government drafting 18-year-old young men to fight in Vietnam who were not allowed to vote. They were not allowed any say in the matter whatsoever, only ordered into war ostensibly to fight for democracy in spite of the fact they were not allowed to participate in said democracy.
Now 18-year-olds can vote but they can't have a gun unless they enlist in the military and they can't drink beer (legally) even if they enlist.
To me, this indicates very shaky hands on the reins of power in this country.

I think back to the time when I watched Diane Sawyer on ABC Nightly News deliver a report about Border Patrol officer Brian Terry's death at the hands of narco terrorists on the Mexican border. The report was so shallow and lacking in any basic facts that I could only conclude it was a cover up for the actions of Baraq Obama and his Attorney General Eric Holder in the Fast and Furious scandal.
