#1 A clear, detailed, neutral and objective expert summary of the Battle for Donbas is here, delivered by Colonel Markus Reisner, Head of Research and Development at Austria's Theresan Military Academy (that's the Austrian version of Saint-Cyr or West Point -- though considerably older, dating from 1751 and Empress Maria Theresa's reign; Rommel taught there in 1938-1939).

Reisner's excellent summary is otganized along four main levels of analysis: Time, Terrain, Information and Force. He discusses how each of these four works to the advantage or disadvantage of the combatants. He does not gloss over the Russians' failures from May 2-6 in the northern river crossings, praises the Ukrainians' "cleverness" in using small boats to transport a few troops at a time across the river and also does not mince words in saying the Russian forces were "annihilated" in their last attempt to cross the river in the northwest part of the Donbas before they transitioned their forces east and south.

Reisner also makes clear the enormous disadvantages faced by the Ukrainians and the failure of their forces to hold the high positions which their special forces occupied in the south. The Ukrainians are extraordinarily vulnerable outside of these few pockets. They are trying to fill in the large gaps with their lightly armed, poorly trained Territorial troops who have been overrun by the Russians' "flower" i.e. multi-pronged thrust north, west and south that began in late May.

He also provides an objective and fascinating overview of how the aging Soviet-era Russian tanks are actually "perfectly" suited to the conditions of this Battle for the Donbas.

Reisner also provides an expert overview of the severe limitations on the Ukrainians' ability to make effective use of the artillery they've been given recently, noting that the Czech and Polish artillery supplied are not the recent NATO hubs but much older Soviet-era materiel.

In sum this is the best and most objective military analysis that anyone has provided.

A pity that more people did not know of Colonel Reisner and gave access to his expert, neutral commentary back in February and March.

#4 Would that we could extradite to the diminished post-war Ukraine the Nuland cabal who put them where they are now.

#8 No problem. I'll leave it in the bin. But note this:

Artillery strikes were carried out mainly on the positions of the Ukrainian army.

"Mainly" -- so some were against civilian targets?

#9 ^ It's called war, Rob. Some of the shells might have hit civilians, some of them might have hit cow pastures.

Or "intelligence development of the battlefield:" AKA: launching an artillery strike on a probable location of enemy troops.
