Protestors overwhelmingly fear that they’ll spread the sometimes-deadly Wuhan coronavirus, but continue to protest anyway. A new Axios-Ipsos survey reveals that by a massive 6.5-to-1 margin, Americans believe that there is a moderate to large risk of getting a nasty COVID-19 infection by "going to protests, demonstrations." Personally, I never participated in a demonstration - except on the other side.
[Fox News] Seattle protesters storm City Hall, demand mayor resign after driving police out of area, declaring autonomous zone
Hundreds of protesters, aided by a sympathetic City Council member, stormed Seattle's City Hall Tuesday night to demand the mayor's resignation, just days after seizing a six-block downtown zone that includes a shuttered police precinct.
Demonstrators remained peaceful, without reports of violence or injuries, but are pushing Mayor Jenny Durkan to step down if she refuses to defund the city's police department.
The protesters continued to camp out in a self-declared "Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone" (CHAZ)-- a region spanning six blocks and encompassing the precinct-- which has effectively been abandoned by law enforcement after the Seattle Police Department closed the East Precinct on Monday. Late on Tuesday night, hundreds of protestors entered Seattle City Hall. It is believed that City Councilmember Kshama Sawant, who has a key to the building, opened it up for them.
Sawant called her colleagues "sellouts" and "corporate politicians.

Earlier on Tuesday, Black Lives Matter Seattle-King County filed a lawsuit against the Seattle Police Department over the “violent tactics it has used to break up largely peaceful protests in recent days.”

This has gone beyond "demonstrations" to outright anarchy and secession. We are in the midst of a civil war, and too few people understand that -- including our president and the DC bureaucrats. It will only end in bloodshed and destruction. I fear for our nation.

They are calling for armed guards for their barricades. I think that a visit from a suitable detachment of military is in order. Maybe start with a Warthog or Apache visit.

@ #8 - Not many idioms anywhere translate cleanly. Imagine translating "getting to first base" in German or French or any other lingo (especially baseball-type ones).

English can be surprisingly hard to translate, exactly because of its idioms.
Getting to first base (with a girl) simply doesn't work in German (the translation, that is).

And Bavarian is even better. Examples:
Breznsoiza (somebody who puts salt on pretzels, which are, of course, already salted)

I thoroughly enjoyed learning German — both times. The drawback of relearning it a lifetime later is that one is never quite sure if one is remembering or making it up... So when we went back to visit fifteen years after that, it turned out that aufschlafen was not quite the separable verb I was aiming for. We were meeting German cousins for the first time, and the impression I did not intend to make was of my 65-year old cousin absolutely helpless with giggles, and her thoroughly adult son-cum-business partner red-faced because giggles are not at all manly. (For the record, ausschlafen is what I meant, not nearly as interesting.)

Saw a menu once in German and in English while in Germany once. "Beilagen" (sides or side dishes) was translated as "Enclosures". It happens but can be worth a chuckle from time to time.
Next up in the stable of recent U.S. corporations to bend over for BLM is venerable bike company Trek. I give them ten hours from now until they're attacked by SJW's and tap out.
[Cycling News] - Trek has issued a statement on its "commitment to a better future" after its bicycles were used as weapons by US police officers against protesters during the Black Lives Matter marches across the US. Trek is one of a number of suppliers of bikes to police forces in the US.
Various images and videos of police officers using their bikes as weapons and shields — seemingly having been trained to use them as such — have appeared online and in the media over the past week and a half.
Trek has been under pressure to react to the use of their police bikes. Cyclingnews understands that members of their own Advocates programme have called for action and support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
In a statement published on Cyclingtips but not on their website with their list of initiatives, Trek said it had seen the photos and video of Trek bikes being "used by police in ways that are abhorrent and vastly different from their intended use".
Chainsaws can be used in ways that are abhorrent and vastly different from their intended use, too.

I've used my bike as a shield between me and an attacking animal, despite my utter lack of police training. It's not rocket science, although I would expect they talk about it in cop school.

But today they had better luck in East London with a statue of Robert Milligan, another slave trader, which was torn down from its plinth on the orders of the Canal and River Trust — supposedly in response to public demand. (There was a petition with a fairly modest 3,000 signatures)
In Oxford, they’ve revived the long-simmering campaign (copied from mob tactics used in Cape Town, South Africa) to remove a statue of Cecil Rhodes from Oriel College. Hundreds of undergraduates chanted ’take it down’, blocked the High Street with a sit-down protest during which all but one of them took a knee for eight minutes, 46 seconds in solidarity with George Floyd...

[Boston 25 News] - BOSTON — Boston police are investigating after the city’s Christopher Columbus statue was vandalized overnight.
The head of the statue was knocked off and left at its base in the North End’s Christopher Columbus Park.
Boston 25 News has reached out to the commissioner of Boston Parks and Recreation and Boston police for more information.
This is not the first time the statue has been targeted. In 2015, it was doused in red paint with "Black Lives Matter" spray painted on its base.
At the time, Boston’s Parks and Recreation commissioner said while they encourage discourse, destroying public property is not the way to do it.
In 2006, someone took the statue’s head. It was found six days later and repaired. Past time to discourage discourse with BLM / Antifa goons. If the Angulo family was still around these BLM guys would be six feet under somewhere in a New Hampshire forest.
On May 31, 19 Chicago residents were killed. This was the single deadliest day in Chicago in six decades, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab. The lab’s data doesn’t go back further than 1961.
From 7 p.m. Friday, May 29, through 11 p.m. Sunday, May 31, 25 people were killed in the city An additional 85 were wounded by gunfire, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times.
...That same Sunday, Mayor Lori Lightfoot held a conference call with city’s alderman. Not surprisingly, the alderman complained about the lawlessness and violence in their wards. You can listen to a recording of the meeting here.
...Her most interesting exchange was a profanity-laced confrontation with Alderman Raymond Lopez. He told Lightfoot that the city was unprepared for the demonstrations:
When downtown is in lockdown, our neighborhoods are next, and our failure to fully get ready for what’s going on in the neighborhoods, we’re seeing this destruction, and we’re thinking that it’s going to somehow end tonight. We have seen where, in other cities, this has gone on for days; and we need to come up with a better plan for days, at least for the next five days, to try and stabilize our communities.
Lopez continued:
Once they’re done looting and rioting and whatever’s going to happen tonight, God help us, what happens when they start going after residents? Going into the neighborhoods? Once they start trying to break down people’s doors, if they think they’ve got something. I’ve got gangbangers with AK-47s walking around right now, just waiting to settle some scores. What are we going to do, and what do we tell residents, other than good faith people stand up? It’s not going to be enough.
Lightfoot tried to duck Lopez’s inquiry. When that didn’t work, she resorted to profanity. "I think you’re 100% full of sh*t, is what I think," Lightfoot said.
"F*** you, then," Lopez responded. "Who are you to tell me I’m full of shi*? ... Maybe you should come out and see what’s going on."
Lopez claims that Lightfoot worked with gang members to protect selected areas against looting. She denies the allegation.
The feud between Lightfoot and Lopez is emblematic of tension between Chicago’s Black and Latino communities. Lightfoot acknowledged that the demonstrations and rioting have exacerbated tensions between the two groups.
According to one source, the "Latin Kings" sent a message to the police that they would "take care" of the rioters, and that the police were not needed. Thus, Chicago may have faced the prospect of war in the street between Latinos and Blacks.

In the 20th century, the CCP attracted domestic political support by demanding the return of treaty ports like Hong Kong. Beijing's current South China Sea expansion and pursuit of "traditionalist" claims on Himalayan territory repeat this motif. Hence the most likely scenario: Beijing is chest pounding to gain domestic support.
However, if someone on a glacier starts shooting, a brief Sino-Indian War 2020 (the War for Southern Tibet) where China launches a limited invasion with the goal of pushing the border 20 miles south in either the eastern or western sectors cannot be totally dismissed. After the territorial "bite," China would call for a ceasefire to avoid escalation to nuclear war and offer to negotiate a permanent border. This fact argues against a significant Chinese advance. In 1962, Beijing acclimated its infantry to high altitudes. New Delhi did not. In 2020, both sides' front-line forces are acclimated. The boys from Hubei? Not yet.
[RedState] The Portland Tribune reports that a wall is being built around Portland City Hall. The reason this is so delightfully ironic is because the city’s mayor, Ted Wheeler, gave an inspiring speech last year which he titled, “Building Bridges, Not Walls.”
On the occasion of Martin Luther King Day, the far-left mayor told the crowd, “The reality is that we’re living at a time where at the federal level, we have an administration that’s seeking to build a wall to divide us…We have a president who emboldens racist behavior.”
According to The Tribune:
Wooden walls are being erected around City Hall and the Portland Building to protect them from vandalism.
According to Mayor Ted Wheeler’s office, despite other fencing that was put up last week, both buildings continue to be marked with graffiti each night of the ongoing protests.
“Cleaning the buildings each day is taking public resources, particularly due to the limestone surface at City Hall. We are looking into the possibility of partnering with the arts community to create murals on the plywood in support of the racial justice movement,” Wheeler’s office told the Portland Tribune.
Protests have taken place downtown for more than 11 nights in a row following the death of African-American George Floyd at the hands of the Minneapolis police. Although the most intense activity has taken place at the Justice Center, other buildings have been repeatedly vandalized, too, including the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse and Pioneer Place.

And the wall is already coming down. In a statement, the city said that while the wall was intended to protect the building and minimize expenses, the city needed to “hear our community’s demands for racial justice, even when those demands take the form of spray paint.”

Crime escalated, in part, because police who normally would have been patrolling neighborhoods were pulled off the beat to secure downtown areas and commercial districts targeted by looters.
Ironically, L.A.’s grim week coincided with Mayor Eric Garcetti’s announcement that the LAPD budget would be cut by up to $150 million, which is more than two percent of the current total. His announcement encouraged protesters who support calls to "defund" or "abolish" the police.
The money, he said, was to be "reinvested" in "communities of color" — the same communities enduring a crime wave during the Black Lives Matter protests.

Some 148 more people were diagnosed with the novel coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the country’s total number of infected people since the start of the crisis to 18,180. There are currently 2,722 active cases — up 115 from the day before.
Among the sick are 31 people with serious symptoms — up two from Monday. Among them are 23 people who are intubated.

Minnesota man hit with arson charge after police precinct burned down in George Floyd riots
[FoxNews] Branden Michael Wolfe, 23, of St. Paul, was charged in federal court with aiding and abetting arson at the Minneapolis Police Department’s Third Precinct, the Justice Department said. The station was set on fire during May 28 rioting that began after Floyd's death while in Minneapolis police custody days earlier. Rioters broke into the precinct around 10 p.m. and sparked a fire after police officers on the roof were rescued by helicopter.
Federal prosecutors said St. Paul police officers were called on June 3 to a Menards home improvement store after Wolfe was seen wearing body armor with his name written on duct tape, a law enforcement belt and a baton in the store. The belt had handcuffs and a knife attached. Officers responded and arrested Wolfe.
He was fired from his security guard position at the store hours earlier after he referred to social media posts about him stealing items from the police precinct. Additional items -- including a 9mm pistol, police radio, riot helmet and a police-issued overdose kit -- were recovered from his apartment, according to federal prosecutors.

The owner of a manufacturing company in Minneapolis that was burned to the ground during last week’s violent riots has announced that he is relocating his company, taking dozens of jobs out of the city, due to the failure of the city’s Democrat leaders to protect businesses.
“They don’t care about my business,” Kris Wyrobek, president and owner of 7-Sigma Inc., told the Star Tribune. “They didn’t protect our people. We were all on our own.”
As he watched a nearby business burn to the ground, Wyrobek noted, “The fire engine was just sitting there, but they wouldn’t do anything.”
“The city’s first survey of property damage shows that nearly 1,000 commercial properties in Minneapolis were damaged during the riots, including 52 businesses that were completely destroyed and 30 other locations that sustained severe damage,” The Star Tribune reported. “Owners and insurance experts estimate the costs of the damage could exceed $500 million. That would make the Twin Cities riots the second-costliest civil disturbance in U.S. history, trailing only those in Los Angeles in 1992, which were also sparked by racial tensions with police and had $1.4 billion in damages in today’s dollars.”
Wyrobek told The Star Tribune that it was too late to change his mind about keeping his company in the city, adding that before the riots, he never in his “wildest nightmare” would have thought about relocating his business.

Chicago needs to start by clearing the upper ranks of their PD. It's filled with people qualified only by their connections, and they look after people who will help them keep power. They give their cronies the material for promotional exams, use the merit promotions for those willing to put out, and carefully manage internal affairs to keep their people out of trouble.

Sounds to me that this is a way to prevent independent citizens from setting up as police.
I read it as one more way to *bleep* with the cops. After getting acquitted in court, the state or city could still revoke their license. Rather like the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs did with that barber in Owosso who refused to close.

An annual, renewal fee and state agency license guarantees that any police officer can be denied renewal, by the centralized state agency, on an annual basism and therefore, every officer has a career only a long as he is renewed each year. Once it is created, control of the police is centralized in a single place, and careers as based on not having complaints or disputes that give basis for non-renewal, or probationary renewal. So your career and pension are based on pleasing the licensing agency of state government, and making sure you don't create adverse complaints. See the pattern....neutered and pliant police who will meet the unwritten standards of the mob they serve!

[UPI] A federal judge on Tuesday granted a stay to a Texas death row inmate who was scheduled to be executed next week.
U.S. District Court Judge Hilda Tagel granted a stay of execution to Ruben Gutierrez, 42, after his attorneys have requested additional DNA testing in the case and challenged a Texas Department of Criminal Justice statute prohibiting all religious or spiritual advisors from entering the execution chamber.
"The Court concludes that Gutierrez has made a showing of likelihood of success on the merits of at least one of his DNA or execution-chamber claims," said Tagle.
Gutierrez was convicted and sentenced to death for the 1998 murder of trailer park owner Escolastica Harrison, who was 82. He was 20 years old at the time of the murder.
He has requested a post-conviction DNA test of nail scrapings and loose hairs taken from the victim, a shirt belonging to a family member of Harrison and other clothing items, saying testing would prove his innocence.
Last week, attorneys for Guttierrez filed a motion stating it would be "irresponsible and against the public's interest" to conduct the necessary investigation during the COVID-19 pandemic.

No point in talking about them until the evidence is irrefutable.
It's been awhile since we've had a bleg. I always hate to do it. It makes me feel like a bum. I guess that's appropriate, since I'm bumming. That's why I try to keep it to a minimum. But I'm running low on bourbon and I could use a new laptop.
This is also supposed to be a hardware year, although our server seems to be indestructible. It's the best one we've had so far. It's been sitting up in Baltimore for three+ years now, untouched by human hands. Saying that, naturally, means it's going to catch fire or explode or something as soon as the words are out of my mouth (keyboard, as it were). We back up the database, but only twice a day now. I've been extremely remiss about synching the rest of the box, so if we have a crash we'll lose a bunch of images and I'll have to reconstitute. The machine I'm working on at this moment should be able to slip in as a replacement, after a two hour drive to get to Baltimore, but it's not up to it right now. Since it's as old as the server, I should buy a new box.
We're coming up on nineteen years of the Burg. The archives are there, they're available for anyone who wants to use them except for bots. The bots are why you have to email me to get on the archives list. The bloid's now automated, kinda sorta creakily. I have to tell it what I want in it, but I don't have to handle Inkscape and Gimp with my fading, twitching hands to put it together.

[NPASYRIA] A landmine went kaboom! near a Russian armored vehicle near the border gate in the village of Marj Ismail eight km east of Kobani city, injuring a number of Russian soldiers and burning about 50 hectares of agricultural land in the surrounding area on Tuesday.
The Russian armored vehicle came to the border gate to coordinate with Ottoman Turkish forces to conduct a joint patrol in the region and the number of injured is still unknown, local sources reported to North Press.
"The mine explosion caused the burning of about 50 hectares of wheat crop in the villages of Marj Ismail, Kazkan, and Kikan, east of Kobani," Izzat Assaf, a member of the fire station in Kobani, told North Press.
After Ankara's long-threatened military incursion into northeast Syria to confront the Kurdish elements of the SDF in October, a ceasefire deal was first reached between the US and The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... on Oct. 17 and then another one between Russia and Turkey on Oct. 22.
The Russian-Ottoman Turkish deal involves the SDF withdrawing its forces up to 30 kilometers from the Ottoman Turkish-Syrian border.
This deal also outlines joint Ottoman Turkish-Russian patrols in a 10-kilometer-wide strip of land along the border that began on Nov. 1. Since then, the two sides have carried out dozens of such operations. The first of these took place on Nov. 1 on the Syrian-Ottoman Turkish border between the towns of Derbasiya and Amude.
The Russian forces conduct joint patrols with Ottoman Turkish forces from time to time in the Kobani countryside. The last joint patrol took place on the 28th of last month.

Sheikho indicated that when the women’s relatives visited them in prison, members of the Division demanded a ransom ranging between 200,000 and 500,000 Syrian pounds in exchange for the release of each of them.
The women appeared for the first time after being kidnapped by al-Hamzat in a leaked video on social media, after the opposition’s armed families attacked the al-Hamzat Division headquarters during confrontations between the gangs, which killed a number of civilians and sparked anger among the population.
In late May, the Afrin region witnessed a "massive demonstration" of gangs’ families from the Ghouta area of Damascus countryside, calling for the military headquarters of the Ottoman Turkish-backed gangs to be removed from residential neighborhoods, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
In a statement following the incident, the Autonomous Administration held the Ottoman Turkish government responsible for what happened to these women, and it appealed to all human rights organizations and international decision makers to conduct an international investigation and hold those responsible for these violations accountable.
A report published by the Violations Documentation Center in northern Syria said that the fate of 3,500 civilians arrested in Afrin is still unknown, including 181 women, 98 of whom were killed under torture, and 80 cases were documented.

[STARTRIBUNE] A report of a drug overdose led to the eviction Tuesday of more than 200 homeless people from a hotel in south Minneapolis that had become a refuge during protests that erupted in the wake of George Floyd’s killing in police custody.
Residents of the former Sheraton Minneapolis Midtown Hotel, tucked just north of Lake Street on reliably Democrat Chicago, aka The Windy City or Mobtown ...home of Al Capone, the Chicago Black Sox, a succession of Daleys, Barak Obama, and Rahm Emmanuel... Avenue, awoke to reports that the hotel’s fire alarm was pulled after 6 a.m. following an overdose. The hotel owner, Jay Patel, has ordered the eviction of all the guests, according to volunteers at the site.
The sudden eviction marks the second time in two weeks thon the lam numbers of homeless people have been forced to vacate a temporary site, and could hamper efforts by a team of volunteers to find them more permanent housing.

But some residents at the hotel said conditions had begun to spin out of control in recent days, with people injecting heroin and methamphetamine in the hallways, and fights breaking out at night. Volunteers became overwhelmed.

[KSTP] A Robbinsdale man is charged with murder after allegedly hitting and dragging a woman with a vehicle after they got into an argument.
Jordan Latrell Jefferson, 29, is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the death of 28-year-old Ochea Brown. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office says Brown died of multiple blunt force injuries on May 29 and ruled the manner of death as homicide.
According to a criminal complaint, Minneapolis coppers found a vehicle crashed near the intersection of 17th and Bryant Avenues at about 3:15 a.m. on May 29. After noticing significant damage to the front of the vehicle, officers saw Brown in the back seat, bleeding from severe head trauma. She was pronounced dead. He's dead, Jim! A witness told Sherlocks she was riding with Brown and Jefferson in the vehicle when Brown and Jefferson got into a verbal argument. The witness said Jefferson, who was driving, began punching Brown in the face. The complaint states the witness said she tried to intervene but Jefferson continued punching Brown. Jefferson then demanded Brown get out of the vehicle and, when she did and started walking away, the witness said Jefferson accelerated at a high rate of speed and aimed the vehicle directly at Brown, hitting her and trapping her under the vehicle.
The complaint states Jefferson continued dragging Brown until he crashed the vehicle into the front porch of a home. At that point, he allegedly got out of the vehicle and then slapped her and said her name to get her to respond. However, a clean conscience makes a soft pillow... she was unresponsive. "It's just this war and that lying son of a bitch, Johnson!"
According to the complaint, Jefferson then put Brown's body in the back seat of the vehicle and drove away from the scene, but he crashed the vehicle soon after, leaving it inoperable. The witness said Jefferson then called a friend to come pick him and the witness up. The friend first went to the scene and couldn't find Brown's pulse, saying her neck was broken. They then left the scene and went to the friend's residence, where Jefferson showered, disposed of his clothes and told the witness to take the truth about Brown's death to the grave.
Jefferson was later taken into custody. His first court appearance was Friday, and his bail was set at $1 million. His next hearing is set for July 1.
If convicted, each second-degree murder charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in jail.

[MLIVE] The language in a petition to recall Gov. Gretchen Whitmer ...Her Excellency, the dictator of Michigan, 2020 Dem VP contender... for the signing of nine of her executive orders during the COVID-19 pandemic has been approved by the Michigan Board of State Canvassers.
Albion resident Chad Baase, 39, was successful in his third attempt at coming up with "clear and factual" language to move forward with the recall petition process. He and his group -- the Committee to Recall Governor Gretchen Whitmer -- must come up with more than 1 million signatures from registered voters in 60 days or less to trigger a recall election.
"She didn’t put through effective measures with COVID to ensure businesses didn’t have to close their doors," Baase said. "Some places couldn’t social distance under the federal guidelines, but many businesses could have stayed open with safety guidelines in place and were forced out of work.
"You can’t take away someone’s income and say you’re eligible for pandemic unemployment but then you can’t speak with anyone. I’m still waiting on my unemployment. They owe me 10 weeks."
The Board of State Canvassers unanimously approved the recall language Monday, June 8, during a virtual meeting. The four-member bipartisan group unanimously approved the language, but rejected two other attempts to begin recall petitions, including a second petition to recall Gov. Whitmer and one to recall Attorney General Dana Nessel.
Petition language submitted by Baase, and approved by the board, lists out nine executive orders. They include the governor’s March 10 state of emergency declaration to the order and multiple orders that call for the temporary suspension of business and activities not deemed essential to maintain or protect life.

[ALMASDARNEWS] The Israeli army has opened an extensive investigation into the loss of an encrypted radio device for an officer in a special unit in the occupied Syrian Golan.
The Hebrew-language Channel 12 news reported on Tuesday evening that an Israeli civilian had found an encrypted radio device for a high-ranking Israeli officer in the special forces, while he was in or touring the occupied Syrian Golan .
The report confirmed that the Israeli army intends to make an investigation against the officer involved in the loss of the encrypted wireless device, which was found, yesterday, coincidentally, by an Israeli civilian, who realized that it belonged to the Israeli army, and then immediately returned it to an Israeli military unit.
The channel quoted the Israeli army front man as saying that the radio device was located before it was found by the civilian, and that it was lost during a routine military operation in the occupied Golan, and revealed that there was no fear of information leakage from the wireless device .
The channel indicated on its website that the Israeli army will investigate the seriousness of the incident, and disciplinary measures will be taken against the officer, or any person involved in the loss of the device.

[Sudan Tribune] The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) on Monday dismissed reports about the renaming of the Popular Defense Forces (PDF) to the Reserve Department, stressing that its dissolution is an irreversible decision
An internal note by the Sudanese army on 4 June said that the PDF has been renamed the Reserve Department. Also, after its spread, in social media, the army issued a statement saying that the Reserve Department has no relation with the notorious paramilitary force because it was established after its dissolution.
Reacting to the criticism raised by the dissemination of the document, the General Adviser of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Brigadier-General al-Tahir Mohammed Abu Haja issued a second statement on Monday asserting that the PDF has been disbanded adding its "dissolution was irreversible".
"The armed forces confirm that this news is not true, and there is no existing body that represents what was contained in the false circulated information which intended to offend the military institution in a way that serves the agenda of the enemies of the country."
He further said that SAF is reorganizing and restructuring its armies according to the requirements of the current political change, which provides to eliminate "manifestations of unprofessionalism and loyalty" to unpatriotic entities or to establish any bodies that violate its pledge to the Sudanese people.

[UPI] Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza has died of cardiac arrest at the age of 55, the government in Gitega said Tuesday.
In a message posted on Twitter, the Burundi government announced that Nkurunziza died at the Cinquantenaire Hospital in the quiet provincial capital of Karusi after the cardiac event on Monday.
Nkurunziza had been admitted to the hospital last weekend after feeling ill. He became president of Burundi, a landlocked country in central Africa, in 2005.
Nkurunziza was due to retire in August and be succeeded by Gen. Evariste Ndayishimiye, a member of the ruling party who won Burundi's presidential election last month.
The Burundian Constitutional Court said last week Ndayishimiye won 68 percent of the vote, though some accused the ruling party and its military wing, the Imbonerakure, of intimidating voters during the campaign.

Authorities have carried out a sustained crackdown on alleged followers of U.S.-based Moslemholy manFethullah Gülen ... a Turkish preacher living in Pennsylvania whom the current govt of Turkey considers responsible for all the ills afflicting Turkey and possibly the entire world. Gülen and Erdogan used to be really good friends, but only one of them could be sultan, and Gülen lost... since the coup attempt in July 2016, when 250 people were killed.
Gulen denies any involvement. The former ally of President Tayyip Erdogan has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States since 1999.
The police operation was coordinated from the western city of Izmir and targeted people in 22 provinces, state-owned Anadolu news agency said. The police have already detained 145 of the suspects, it said.
The suspects, mostly on active duty, were believed to have communicated to other Gulen followers through pay phones and to have received advantages in admission to military schools, Anadolu said.
In a separate operation, police detained 16 military personnel the southeastern city Diyarbakir over the weekend, security sources said. On Tuesday, a local court nabbed Please don't kill me! six of them pending trial and freed 10 others, the sources added.
Istanbul police said prosecutors had ordered the detention of 44 military personnel, including a major and three lieutenants, as well as doctors and teachers. It said 33 people had already been detained in the operation spread over eight provinces.
Anadolu said police had also detained 25 out of 32 suspects from the air forces as part of another operation. It said detention warrants were issued for eight people in the gendarmerie forces, including a colonel.

[BREITBART] Student protesters at the University of Missouri have circulated a petition that calls on Mizzou officials to remove a "racist" Thomas Jefferson statue from campus grounds. Are you really sure Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings didn't just like each other a lot?
According to a report by Campus Reform, student protesters at the University of Missouri are calling for the removal of a Thomas Jefferson statue from campus on the grounds that it is "racist."
A petition that has been signed by over 3,000 members of the community argues that the Jefferson statue has "no place" on the Mizzou campus. In the petition, the students cite Jefferson’s ownership of more than 600 slaves as a justification for removal of the statue.
Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, owned more than 600 African-American slaves throughout his adult life. Mizzou has no room for a racist slave owner on our campus, in the Quad, where thousands of black students pass by everyday, forced to deal with imagery of the past in the future where we should be promoting equality, diversity and inclusion. A memorial of a racist has no place on out campus. The vast majority of these Confederate monuments were built during the era of Jim Crow laws (1877—1964). Detractors like us know that they were not built as memorials but as a means of intimidating African Americans and reaffirming white supremacy ...the pernicious doctrine that laws were intended to be obeyed, that society works better when people don't pour shreiking from their places of worship every Friday for a weekend of rioting over insults real or imagined; and that cannibalism, beastiality, incest, murder, theft, rape, and similar activities are bad. A Dead White European (which invalidates his opinion) philosopher once opined that societies thrive when a person's word can be relied upon, and that a society which puts individual happiness first will invariably fail. Strangely enough, other successful societies, such as China, Japan, Korea, and those kinds of places could also be lumped with white supremacist societies, since they push the same values... Nearly 500 students have signed a counter-petition that calls on the university to save the Jefferson statue. The petition argues that Jefferson’s role in writing the Declaration of Independence makes him worthy of admiration, despite his slave ownership.
Though Jefferson recognized the grave evils of slavery, he remained a slaveholder. However, if you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to be a horrible warning... is it truly fair to judge a man based on our 21st century understanding of morality, when the man we are judging lived in a time where slavery was the norm? Is it truly fair to defame a former president who wrote the Declaration of Independence, where he expressed that "all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness"? Jefferson did not live up to all of his values, nor should we expect him to have lived up to all of them. Who among us has lived up to all of the values we uphold? Who among us is perfect?
The Jefferson statue at the University of Missouri is not the only historical monument to be targeted by leftists in the aftermath of George Floyd’s death. A bust of George Washington’s head was knocked over last week at George Washington University. Some students took to Twitter to praise the vandalism.

[Sudan Tribune] The International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed on Tuesday that one of the first Darfur war crimes suspects was in their custody after days of intense rumors.
The ICC revealed that Ali Kushayb who is described as one of the leaders of the notorious Janjaweed militias, which operated in Darfur, surrendered voluntarily in the Central African Republic (CAR).
"ICC Registrar Mr Peter Lewis thanked the Minister of Justice Flavien M’Bata and the authorities of the Central African Republic, the French Republic, the Republic of Chad, as well as the leaders of the United Nations ...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships... Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) and the authorities of the host State, the Netherlands, for their support to the Court and cooperation in the arrest, surrender and transfer of Mr. Kushayb to the Court".
Kushayb is charged with 22 counts of crimes against humanity and 28 counts of war crimes during the government’s Darfur counterinsurgency campaign in 2003-2004.
The arrest warrant against him was issued in 2007.
