Here, we studied the effects of the disease in the brain using multimodal data from 782 participants from the UK Biobank COVID-19 re-imaging study, with 394 participants having tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infection between their two scans. We used structural and functional brain scans from before and after infection, to compare longitudinal brain changes between these 394 COVID-19 patients and 388 controls who were matched for age, sex, ethnicity and interval between scans. We identified significant effects of COVID-19 in the brain with a loss of grey matter in the left parahippocampal gyrus, the left lateral orbitofrontal cortex and the left insula. When looking over the entire cortical surface, these results extended to the anterior cingulate cortex, supramarginal gyrus and temporal pole.

The rogue state has almost doubled its fleet sailing under other countries’ flags to 123 in the past year, letting China smuggle in up to a million barrels of oil per day – or two-thirds of the UK’s daily use.
Intelligence experts warn that the expanded fleet shows Iran, which announced hardliner Ebrahim Raisi as its president yesterday, is boosting development of its nuclear capability despite international curbs.
The fleet uses a string of techniques to evade sanctions as it sails the globe with its illegal cargo, including registering vessels in small nations without the ability to monitor tankers flying their flag.
Iranian vessels are also ‘spoofing’ – manipulating the GPS that reports a vessel’s position so it appears to be elsewhere when it docks undetected in prohibited areas.
Satellite imagery provided to the The Mail on Sunday shows ships in the illegal armada allegedly spoofing last month, and others travelling to load oil on to Chinese ships in the South China Sea.
Ships also use ‘flag hopping’ to switch their registration between nations and mask their identity.
US sanctions designed to stop Iran financing international terrorism and developing its nuclear programme ban the Middle East state from selling oil abroad.
But China has flouted the ban and increased its secret dealings at sea over the past six months to help bankroll Iran’s nuclear activity, according to United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI), an international not-for-profit group led by former US ambassador to the UN Mark Wallace.
It used satellite imagery and round-the-clock tracking to monitor the illicit trade.
China was reportedly buying an average of 700,000 barrels of illegal Iranian oil a day up to April, peaking at a million barrels, making it Tehran’s main customer.
Ghost armada ships carrying 18 million barrels are currently thought to be in the South China Sea.
Between February and May, UANI successfully applied for seven ships in the fleet, which includes 20 supertankers able to carry more than two million barrels of oil, to have their flags deregistered after alerting national authorities and insurers.
The armada can transport almost 100 million barrels of crude or fuel oil and nearly 12 million barrels of liquefied petroleum gas – worth a total of £5.5 billion.
Other countries that buy from Iran include Syria and the United Arab Emirates.
UANI senior adviser Sir Ivor Roberts, a former Foreign Office counter-terrorism chief, said that if only a sixth of the armada’s tankers evaded detection and completed a shipment each week, Iran would be exporting 2.4 million barrels a day – 300,000 more than before sanctions were reimposed in 2018.
He added: ‘The volume of black-market oil China is buying from Iran is staggering. That gives the regime in Tehran the foreign currency it needs to build up its reserves, ramp up its nuclear programme in the face of international sanctions and pursue its terror-sponsoring agenda abroad.
'This shadowy alliance is a challenge to the West and… has potentially huge implications for our security.’
Iran and China did not respond to requests to comment last night.

Homeowners could do more to clear deadwood near their properties, install fire breaks, and perhaps for the homes worth $1 million or more, install their own personal fire-suppression apparatus or devices. The millionaires could well afford that. People who choose to live in a tinderbox should expect fires now & then.

Officers removed Newsom from the situation and arrested the 54-year-old man, she said.
Newsom did not appear injured, the East Bay Times reported, and quipped to news hounds that different people have different ways of saying hello. The assailant allegedly threw a water bottle at the governor, according to law enforcement sources who spoke to the East Bay Times.
The man was taken to Alameda County jail, where he was booked for investigation of resisting an executive officer and assaulting a public official.
Reached by phone, a woman who identified as the suspect’s sister described him as a homeless man with severe mental health problems. She said the allegation made by authorities was “consistent with his past behavior.”

After 47 years, the United States Foreign Counterintelligence Activity will case its colors and officially be inactivated as an Army organization on Wednesday, 7 July 2021.
This will be the first of three unit inactivations over the next 12 months, coinciding with the scheduled unit changes of commands, concluding with the 902d casing its colors in the summer of 2022. As part of the G-2 directed CI Reformation, the 902d will transform into new Army CI Command, led by a yet unnamed 1-star General Officer. While the Army will keep the capability and mission that FCA had these past decades, it will look a bit different with mission execution being pushed out to additional locations in CONUS, and keeping the x2 overseas locations.

[THEHILL] Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker signed a law on Thursday expanding curbside voting and establishing permanent vote by mail.
Senate Bill 825 lays out procedures for election authorities to establish curbside voting during early voting or on Election Day. The measure also establishes permanent voting lists that voters can choose to opt-in or opt-out of at any time.
The bill also directs authorities to establish central polling places where "all voters in its jurisdiction are allowed to vote on election day ... regardless of the precinct in which they are registered," according to its text.
The measure also allows sheriffs to establish temporary polling locations at county jails. These sites would be available to people who live in the county and are in jug, but have not been convicted of the offense for which they are detained.
Pritzker’s office said that the practice is already in place in Cook County.
The legislation also establishes June 28, 2022, as the new date of the state's primary election.
The measure passed the Illinois general assembly on May 31, according to records on its website.
Pritzker said on Twitter "with attacks on voting rights on the rise in states across the nation, Illinois is proud to stand up for a strong, secure and accessible democracy."

[JustTheNews] Biden has made clear his opposition to raising taxes on people making less than $400,000 a year.
The White House made clear Friday that President Biden is opposed to tying the federal gasoline tax to inflation to help pay for a $579 billion infrastructure package – dashing a bipartisan Senate plan on how to pay for the measure but keeping his campaign promise of no tax increases on most Americans.
The gas tax increase was part of the group’s early package, which called new spending on roads, bridges, rail and public transit.
The plan by the bipartisan group of 21 senators is one a several in Washington including House Democrats’ $1.9 trillion package.
"The president has been clear throughout these negotiations: He is adamantly opposed to raising taxes on people making less than $400,000 a year," White House spokesman Andrew Bates said Friday. "After the extraordinarily hard times that ordinary Americans endured in 2020 – job losses, shrinking incomes, squeezed budgets – he is simply not going to allow Congress to raise taxes on those who suffered the most."
The federal gas tax is now at 18.4 cents a gallon and has not increased since 1993. It helps pay for highways and mass transit programs around the country, according to the Associated Press.
Congress has traditionally relied on the user-pay principle to pay for road and bridge work, use as tolls, but is increasingly relying on general funds to accomplish that task.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer says fellow Democrats don’t believe the $579 billion package does enough on such concerns as climate and priorities like paid family leave.
As a result, he is expected to lead his party on two tracks that include a reconciliation package going beyond what’s in the small, bipartisan plan.
Leaders of the group are expected to meet Monday with Biden on the matter, the wire service also reports.

[The Federalist] The Tolkien Society, a literary organization founded in 1969 and dedicated to promoting the works of J.R.R Tolkien, has held an annual academic conference for decades. This year’s conference, to be held virtually via Zoom on July 3 and 4, is on the theme of "Tolkien and Diversity."
Before we go on, understand that the Tolkien Society’s president was, and formally remains, the great J.R.R. Tolkien himself. His daughter, Priscilla, currently serves as the vice president. At its annual seminar, scholars present academic papers, archival materials are sometimes displayed and discussed, and a serious effort is generally made to understand and appreciate Tolkien’s unique genius. In other words, it’s not some ramshackle fan club for Middle Earth LARPers.
But this year, seminar attendees will be subjected to something different. Papers to be presented include, "Gondor in Transition: A Brief Introduction to Transgender Realities in The Lord of the Rings," "The Lossoth: Indigeneity, Identity, and Antiracism," and "’Something Mighty Queer’: Destabilizing Cishetero Amatonormativity in the Works of Tolkien." Pretty much the entire program is like this.
The best thing we can say about a Tolkien conference that presents papers on, say, "Pardoning Saruman?: The Queer in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings," or "The Invisible Other: Tolkien’s Dwarf-Women and the ’Feminine Lack,’" is that the scholars in question do not know the first thing about Tolkien or the meaning of his work.

(Headline USA) A judge in Kansas’s most populous county reauthorized landlords to evict tenants who are behind on rent in advance of a federal moratorium expiring at the end of the month.
Johnson County Magistrate Judge Daniel Vokins explained this week during a Zoom eviction hearing that he doesn’t think the moratorium that was issued last year by the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is enforceable.
The federal moratorium, implemented as part of a massive bureaucratic power-grab in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, has prevented many tenants from being evicted, although those who failed to pay still owe back rent.
With the policy set to expire, more than 4 million people nationally face being evicted or foreclosed upon in the coming months, census data show.
It comes as many who received exceedingly generous unemployment benefits during lockdowns to entice them to stay home now remain reluctant to reenter the job market, and massive new government spending proposals for entitlement programs threaten to send inflation skyrocketing.
Making matters worse, the tens of billions of dollars in federal emergency rental assistance that was supposed to solve the problem has not reached most tenants.
Ironically, the policies and rhetoric that Democrats used to install President Joe Biden into office and regain control of the Senate are now coming back to bite the party in power.
Both the White House and Congress have seen their approval ratings plummet as reality—and, with it, buyer’s remorse—sets in.

Today, 156 years after that language entered the Constitution, it's being trampled beneath a flow of humanity that resembles traffic on the northbound San Diego Freeway.

"I was in total shock that everything is being brushed off to the side," said Jessica Betancourt, who owns an eyeglass shop that was looted and destroyed along Burnside Avenue in the Bronx last June.
According to the data, 118 arrests were made in the Bronx during the worst of the looting in early June.

The NYPD data shows there were 485 arrests in Manhattan. Of those cases, 222 were later dropped and 73 resulted in convictions for lesser counts like trespassing, which carries no jail time. Another 40 cases involved juveniles and were sent to family court; 128 cases remain open.
In NY, Looting is treated like a 2nd/3rd degree FELONY Burglary.
An according the NY Law. A person Jailed for or Convicted but still on probation for a Felony can't vote in NY.
