Neolithic Matches
Researchers from Israel say that mysterious clay and stone artefacts from Neolithic times could be the earliest known "matches".
(8000 yrs ago)
The research was published in the open access journal Plos One.

By using electro-microscopy techniques, Prof Goren-Inbar and her colleagues identified tell-tale signs that the cylindrical clay objects may have been rotated at high speed, generating friction to ignite tinder.

They identified linear marks, or striations - at the conical ends of the cylinders which they interpret as being generated by spinning the "matches" within sockets found on "fire boards", which are known from other sites. Burn-colouration reminiscent of scorch-marks was also found, as well as grooves evident higher up the objects, which may have been generated by a bow, used to spin the cylinders.

Explosive detection dogs are sweeping the building and all appointments at Walter Reed Bethesda have been suspended until 2 p.m.

Assad's Forces Begin Major Offensive in Aleppo
According to regime and rebel sources, the Syrian army has taken positions in the district in a major blow for insurgents.

Reuters reported from Aleppo on Wednesday morning that Syrian rebels had abandoned their positions in a district that has been a frontline of fighting in recent days.

“We have retreated, get out of here,” rebels told reporters.

The news agency reported that a checkpoint that had been manned by rebel fighters for the last week had disappeared.

A rebel commander told AFP that army tanks had penetrated Salaheddin on Wednesday morning, sparking fierce clashes with the insurgents.

Quran Burning By Taliban Sparks Protests In Afghanistan
From a site that is not one of our usual sources, so the story must be considered unconfirmed. That it was printed is nonetheless a datum.
[Khaama Press] Hundreds of local residents in eastern Nuristan province on Tuesday protested against Koran burning
...One of the basic tenets of Islam is that once a Koran has been printed it is expected to last for all time, no matter how old, ratty, and smelly other, lesser holy books may become. Should it actually become necessary to put a Koran out of its misery there is a ritual that includes extensive charivari, featuring long drawn-wailing and head bonking, ritual wife beating, and the sacrifice of dozens of women's noses and pubic lips. When the actual disposal has been completed there is a prescribed period of celebratory gun sex with the expectation of a minimum of two hundred casualties. Should actual infidels dispose of a Koran, Islamic custom calls for three weeks of rioting and a minimum of three dozen dead, which is a holdover from the days of Moloch worship...
by Talibs group in this province.

Provincial security Chief Gen. Ghulamullah Nuristani confirming the report said protests sparked in central Paron district after Talibs burnt a local school.

Gen. Nuristani further added at least 500 local residents of Paron district participated in the demonstration. Provincial security Chief Gen. Ghulamullah Nuristani said the demonstrators were shouting anti-Taliban slogans and urged for justice.

This comes as Talibs burnt a school in Want Waigal district two days back. According to provincial education department chief Dr. Ghulam Hussain hundreds of books including religious books and 300 Korans were burnt inside the school.

Nuristan province located on the bordering regions with Pakistain is among the volatile regions in eastern Afghanistan where Talibs are frequently carrying out insurgency activities. Local security officials say the Talibs backed by Pak military forces are frequently carrying out insurgency activities in various districts of this province.

Meanwhile a number of districts of eastern Nuristan province also witnessed cross-border incursion from Pakistain where hundreds missiles were fired into this province.

Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 08/08/2012 6:43 Comments || Top||

#3  Many moslems consider a Quran with excess decorations to be a desecration. When moslems visit Saudi Arabia, the guards examine the Qurans the visitors have brought with them. If the Quran has excessive decorations or any illustrations or if the pagination is not to the liking of the Saudis, the Quran is confiscated and burned.

The Taliban described in this article may be doing something like this.

#8  I'm shocked that the CIA hasn't made a big deal out of Taliban Koran burnings long ago. It would not take much to make the suggestion that things were done improperly or for improper reasons. Instead we let them define things for us when we burn a few desocrated Korans the proper way.

CIA did well in the first few months after Sept 11 but its hard to see whats been done since. If they are active they are very subtle.
Posted by: rjschwarz || 08/08/2012 14:44 Comments || Top||

#9  CIA? are they the subtle folks responsible for shootouts in Karachi and compromising humanitarian efforts to eradicate polio?

I am sure that they are doing a great job on tactics and day-to-day problem solving with some oopsies like those above, but strategically I can't believe they are doing anything.

If they were doing their Strategic job of framing the local problems in our favor, then we would be seeing a dozen threads of Koran interpretation arguing over the meaning of the thing on Al Jaziera, NBC and Detroit public radio. And we would see unexpected IED events in North Wazoo that blew up some do-badders from time to time. And we would see bags of counterfeit Pakistani currency being used to buy up local hard boys to be shipped to Syria. And we would see a serious effort to broadcast in Urdu information to help educate people about lives that they might aspire to live. And some lib-tard would have leaked a story about deep infiltration of the Pakistani identity, health and census system to develop enduring information about each individual there.

Do we see any of these things? NO. Tactically competent, strategically MIA. I have been hoping to see any sign of strategic thoughts since Petraeus took the reins, but sadly see nothing.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
It's sexist unless it's about Sarah Palin
Help an old man out there: WTF's a capri?
Do you remember pedal pushers? Basically, close-fitted pants that end either below the knee or halfway down the calf. One ought to be slender and fit to wear them, otherwise the unflat belly and hips are sadly accentuated.
Palin was in the Kansas City area to campaign for Sarah Steelman, who's in a tight three-way race in Tuesday's Republican primary for Missouri's U.S. Senate seat. The winner will face Sen. Claire McCaskill (D) in November.

The Steelman Surge BBQ and Picnic featured speeches by Steelman and Palin, followed with Kansas City barbecue served up by the two women to a crowd estimated at 500 or more, many of whom waited an hour or longer.

Palin was there to lend some of her magic to Steelman, who shares not only her conservative views but an independence and willingness to buck the political system. (One of Steelman's goals is to end Congressional pensions, for example.)

A half-dozen or so senatorial candidates have been endorsed by Palin this summer, including last week's winner in Texas, Ted Cruz.

Somehow, Palin has achieved celebrity status since the 2008 election. How many failed vice presidential candidates and former Alaska governors end up with book deals and reality TV shows? With an estimated net worth of $12 million?
Too many by your estimation, I s'pect...
She's concerned about an ex-governor making money but not about a current senate majority leader worth three times as much?
When Palin took to the makeshift stage in the middle of a Missouri farm field, she was dressed more for the part of Hollywood celebrity than serious politician. I know someone's going to remind me that just last week, I said it was sexist to focus on the wardrobes of women in politics.
Hey, no problemo, considering Shelly's insistence on wearing curtains as dresses, or dresses as curtains. I'm so confused.
But it was hard for me to take Palin seriously dressed as she was.

First, her shoes: Five-inch wedges. Her black capris weren't quite skin-tight but tight enough, and her t-shirt with its Superman logo (a Steelman campaign shirt emblazoned with "Our freedom. Our fight.") emphasized her figure. She never once removed her oversized sunglasses.

I suspect they wouldn't be talking about her if it wasn't one of the defeats. When you're trying to play down an opponent you ignore all the victories and talk about the defeats.

#14  The left might be surprised that Palin is still around because they believe their own narrative. They believe she sunk McCain's candidacy when in fact she provided the only life to it and McCain's own blandness and "put the campaign on hold to fix the economy" gambit killed his candidacy.

Palin might have been pulled up from the minors before her time but she's got solid instincts if she ever overcomes the negatives the media has created with their falsifications.

Assad Vows to Crush Revolt, Jalili Says Iran Won't Allow Syria Fall
[An Nahar] Tehran will continue to back Syria under Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor...
, which acts as a pillar of an Iranian-led regional alliance, top envoy Saeed Jalili told Assad in Damascus
...The place where Pencilneck hangs his brass hat...
on Tuesday.

"Iran will never allow the resistance axis -- of which Syria is an essential pillar -- to break," said Jalili, a top aide to Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"What is happening in Syria is not an internal issue but a conflict between the axis of resistance on the one hand, and the regional and global enemies of this axis on the other," he added.

Iran has accused Turkey and Gulf countries of arming the opposition in Syria, in collusion with the United States and Israel, to overthrow the regime of Tehran's key ally, Assad.

Jalili was previously cited by Iran's Al-Alam television station as saying "the crisis in Syria must be solved internally, through national dialogue, and not through the intervention of external forces."

He added: "The Syrian people are hostile to any plan supported by the Zionists and the U.S."

In the same meeting, Assad said he was determined to crush the 17-month rebellion against his regime and cleanse the country of "terrorists," according to state news agency SANA.

"The Syrian people and their government are determined to purge the country of bully boyz and to fight terrorism without respite," Assad told Jalili.

Assad said his country "is able to defeat foreign plans targeting the resistance axis and Syria's role in it.

Al-Qaeda Suspects Targeted Gibraltar
See here for the story of the arrests only five days ago.
MADRID: Three suspected members of al-Qaeda tossed in the slammer
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
in Spain were planning to launch an attack from the air on a shopping mall in the British territory of Gibraltar during the Olympics, reports said.

Police found a video in the home of one of the men, Turkish national Cengiz Yalcin, in the Spanish city of La Linea de la Concepcion, which shows him piloting a large, remote-controlled plane, the online edition of El Pais reported.

''At a certain moment, the plane descended and it dropped a package from the air. On the ground, Yalcin celebrated his achievement,'' it said.

Police believe the men were preparing to use the plane to drop explosives on the mall, Spanish public television station TVE and other media said.

Police tossed in the slammer
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
Yalcin at his home on Thursday, while the other two men, both Chechen, were picked up near the city of Ciudad Real as they travelled by bus to Irun, a Spanish town on the border with La Belle France. The authorities found enough explosives in Yalcin's home at the time of his arrest to blow up a bus, the Spanish Interior Minister, Jorge Fernandez Diaz, has said.

A Spanish judge incarcerated
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
Yalcin on Friday for ''possession of explosive substances and devices with terrorist aims''. He incarcerated
... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not...
the two other men - identified as Eldar Magomedov and Mohamed Ankari Adamov - on Sunday for belonging to a terrorist group and possessing bomb-making material.

The judge based his decisions on information provided by US, French, Russian and Gibraltar authorities, according to Spanish court documents.
Initial Spanish media reports claimed a paragliding instructor in the Campo de Gibraltar gave police evidence suggesting Yalcin had tried to obtain aerial photographs of a ''shopping centre'' in Gibraltar. However,
a person who gets all wrapped up in himself makes a mighty small package...
the released court documents do not mention the images, though they do confirm he was interested in paragliding.

The Gibraltar Chronicle reported the presiding judge said Yalcin had paid for paragliding lessons for two Chechens. The judge said he was satisfied ''beyond mere suspicion'' that Magomedov and Adamov had links to an international terrorist organization.

The incident happened at 10:00 am local time in Pul-e-Alam, the placid provincial capital, a member of the local government's media office, Miriwais Mirzakwal, said.

"The suicide bomber was in a truck that carried construction materials inside the base," Mr Mirzakwal said.

The Taliban said they carried out the attack, and claimed to have killed several NATO soldiers in the blast.

The districts of Pul-e-Alam, Mohammad Abha and Baraki Barack in Pashtun-infested Logar are considered volatile, with gunnies regularly targeting Afghan and Isaf troops.

Israeli Court Allows Gaza Christians to Pray in West Bank, Israel
[An Nahar] An Israeli court on Tuesday backed an Israeli government policy of allowing Christians from the Gazoo Strip to pray at Israeli and West Bank holy sites, and denying the enclave's Moslems the same right.

The Supreme Court rejected an appeal lodged by six Gazoo Moslems and Israeli non-governmental organization Gisha to challenge a ruling of the Beersheba District Court, which refused to intervene against the policy.

The six women were prevented from going to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, Islam's third-holiest site in east Jerusalem, to pray during a Moslem festival.

They denounced the policy as discrimination in favor of Gazoo's 3,000 Christians and against around 1.6 million Moslems in the coastal enclave.

The Israeli authorities justified on security grounds limitations on access to Moslems holy sites it imposes periodically through quotas, ages or residence conditions.

Afghan Commerce Minister Wary of Antagonizing Pakistan
Because of Afghanistan's large amount of dry fruit export to Pakistain via the border crossing, Afghanistan should not jeopardize its relationship with Pakistain, according to the Minister of Commerce and Industries, Anwarul Haq Ahadi.

In his speech to Senators, Ahadi stressed that "We [Afghanistan] should take it easy with Pakistain...[and] if we react as Pakistain has, we will have major losses."

Hundreds of Afghan trucks have been stopped on the Pakistini-Afghan border by Pak military for several days and weeks in recent months.

According to the Zalmai Rasool, Afghan Foreign Minister , "Diplomatic efforts to solve the issue have failed. Pakistain promised to form a commission in this regard."

Afghan Chamber of Commerce officials also believe that Pakistain tried to keep Afghan goods longer in transit for higher taxes and transit charges within the country.

Donkey bomb kills Afghan police chief
[News 24] A bomb strapped to a donkey by Taliban gun-hung tough guys killed an Afghan district police chief and maimed three others, an official said on Tuesday.

The explosive-laden donkey was tied to a bridge near the gate of the local government headquarters in Charsada, in impoverished central Ghor province, before police chief Gul Ahmad arrived at work on Monday, the official said.

"When the district police chief's vehicle was passing, the bomb was went kaboom! by remote control, killing the police chief on the spot," provincial spokesperson Abdulhai Khatibi said.

Three other coppers were maimed, he said, blaming the attack on Talibs.

Although donkey bombs are rare in Afghanistan, they are occasionally used by gun-hung tough guys as a way of getting close to targets.

Lebanon Won't Attend Tehran Meeting on Syria
[An Nahar] Leb has informed Iran that it will not take part in an upcoming meeting on the Syrian conflict that Tehran is hosting, a Lebanese diplomatic official said on Tuesday.

"The Lebanese foreign ministry has informed the Iranian authorities that Leb will not attend Thursday's meeting in Tehran, because it has never participated in any international meetings on Syria, in line with its policy of self-disassociation," the official told Agence La Belle France Presse on condition of anonymity.

Iran called for a ministerial meeting among states that have taken a "realistic and principled stand" on the Syrian crisis, Tehran said on Monday, adding representatives from 10 countries were expected to attend.

No Facebook Account? That's cause for suspicion!
As Forbes lurches into Huffington Post territory, one of their writers comes up with this unique idea:
I am writing with some words of caution. I used to say that "if you're not on Facebook, it's possible you don't actually exist. "I think it's time to update that, courtesy of Slashdot: Facebook abstainers will be labeled suspicious.

Slashdot flagged a German news story in which an expert noted that mass murderers Anders Breivik and James Holmes both lacked much of a social media presence, leading to the conclusion, in Slashdot's phrasing, that "not having a Facebook account could be the first sign that you are a mass murderer."

#2  Yes Ian, it is true. This all happened long before the 'US Government Internet Service' and our old friend Facebook. Many, many years ago men carried pouches made from dead animal skins containing paper communiques and posts. Yes indeed, many trees were killed. The organization which carried out this archaic process was called the US Postal Service. These dispatches consisted of bills and such, and were delivered from house to house, and to businesses as well. These were all very private and unlike today, no one really knew what was in any of them, not even people like your uncle Fred, the Facebook minder.

Anyway, you remember our recent discussion concerning 'bills' and what was then known as 'payment for serivces rendered' don't you? Well it was all connected to the postal delivery process. Oh, what were businesses...? That's a topic for another time. Back to the carriers please.

Yes, these men, some of them military veterans, were assisted by others who could....not walk long distances due to genetic gravitational challenges, or simply refused at all. These people rode in small delivery trucks powered by heavily polluting fossil fuels, while snacking on chips and 'Big Gulps'. They stuffed boxes stamped from steel from coal and natural gas fired furnaces mills and factories.

What were mills and factories? Again Ian, a topic for another time.

Tuesday to reveal the source for his claim that the Republican presidential candidate has not paid taxes for 10 years, stepping up pressure as two major fact-check sites ruled Reid had no basis for the "incendiary" allegation.

Romney, in an interview with Fox News, said he doesn't believe Reid has a credible source but urged the Senate Democratic leader to reveal who it is.

"I don't really believe that he's got any kind of a credible source," Romney said. "I don't know who gave him this line of reasoning, whether it came from the White House or the DNC or a staffer, but he ought to say where it came from, and then we can find out whether that person has any credibility. I know they don't."

He said Reid also has "lost a lot of credibility."

Romney's latest comments came as two major fact-check sites knocked down Reid's comments, which the senator amplified by repeating them last week on the Senate floor. Reid has said his source is an investor with Romney's former venture capital company Bain.

But PolitiFact wrote that it is "far-fetched" to believe Romney paid no taxes for 10 years. Further, the article stated the obvious -- "Reid has produced no evidence to back up his claim other than attribution to a shadowy anonymous source."

PolitiFact concluded: "Reid has made an extreme claim with nothing solid to back it up." They gave the accusation a "Pants on Fire!" rating.

'Egypt Moves To Seal Off Gaza Smuggling Tunnels'
Varoom, varoom, clank, clank, clank.
[Jerusalem Post] Source says heavy equipment brought to Rafah border town, adds campaign "aims at closing all openings between Egypt, Gazoo."

Egypt began work to seal off smuggling tunnels into the Gazoo Strip on Tuesday, a security source said, amidst an uptick in public discussions by Israeli leaders over Egypt's willingness and capability of policing the increasingly lawless Sinai Peninsula.

The move came two days after gunnies rubbed out 16 Egyptian border guards in an attack blamed partly on Paleostinian Islamists.

A Rooters news hound in the border town of Rafah said heavy equipment was brought to the area near the tunnels, which are used to smuggle people to and from Gazoo but also food and fuel that are a lifeline for the territory's population.

"The campaign aims at closing all the openings between Egypt and the Gazoo Strip that are used in smuggling operations," said the security source.

Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman said on Tuesday that Egypt has enough forces to deal with terrorism in Sinai, responding to suggestions that Israel will consider any Egyptian request to deploy additional military forces in the Sinai.

"There are enough forces in Sinai, it's now just a matter of making a decision," he said.

The IDF said the perpetrators of Sunday's attack were part of a global jihad terrorist infrastructure operating inside the Sinai that was made up mostly of local Beduin.

During the attack, some 35 gunnies stormed an Egyptian military base, killing 16 coppers and soldiers. On Monday, Egypt branded the attackers "infidels" and vowed to launch a crackdown throughout the Sinai.

Until now, Israel has permitted the Egyptians to deploy about seven battalions in the Sinai, although under the peace treaty the peninsula is meant to remain demilitarized.

The conclusion Jerusalem hopes the Egyptians will draw is that they will act more forcefully to stamp out the global jihadi terrorism that is growing there, threatening both Israel and Egypt.

"Perhaps this will be a necessary wake-up call for the Egyptians to take matters in their hands in a more serious way," Defense Minister Ehud Barak told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee on Monday.

The Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, government had condemned the attack as an "awful crime" and promised to help Egypt find the culprits, but also denied Gazoo Orcs and similar vermin were involved.

"We reject using the name of Gazoo (in the context of the attack) without investigation and without finding out who is standing behind it," said Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, Deputy Prime Minister Mohammed Awad.

Meanwhile,
...back at the alley, Slats Chumbaloni was staring into a hole that was just .45 inch in diameter and was less than three feet from his face ...
protesters heckled Egyptian Prime Minister Hesham Kandil on Tuesday at the funeral of the 16 soldiers killed. The funeral was disrupted by hecklers who chanted against Egypt's new Islamist leaders, who may yet face a backlash against their plans to relax restrictions on Gazoo border crossings.

"The Brotherhood and Hamas are one dirty hand," chanted some of the mourners.

According to Egyptian daily Al-Masry Al-Yom, vandals smashed Kandal's vehicle and pelted him with shoes.

Harry Reid's office denies retirement report
[Washington Examiner] Following up on my post from earlier this afternoon, Nevada political observer and Las Vegas Sun columnist Jon Ralston got an official statement from the office of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid
... the charismatic senator-for-life from Nevada, currently majority leader ...
... rumored by some to be guilty of pederasty, but you know how rumors get started when someone starts spouting on and on ...
,
D-Nev., regarding the Washington Post's report today that he intends to retire at the end of his current term:

Response from Reidworld to Milbank-fueled speculation: "The is purely baseless speculation. Of course he is running again."

That would indicate that Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank simply erred when he wrote in his column today:

Reid, who won reelection in 2010 and doesn't plan to run for office again, is happy to absorb blows in return -- and they have been ferocious.

Milbank's claim was eyebrow-raising because the majority leader had not previously given any indication he plans to step down. No word so far from Milbank on whether he stands by his claim or this was a simple goof.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
The Sinai attack: Blow by blow
[Jerusalem Post] Vague tip arrived in Israel weekend before attack, but it was enough to spur IDF into action, preparing forces.
Many thanks due to the tipster and the brave men of the Bedouin Reconnaissance Battalion, who took on a tank armed only with standard issue machine guns.
The first tip about the attack that took place along the Egyptian border on Sunday night arrived in Israel sometime over the weekend.

It was vague and unclear, without details of time, place, target or type of attack. But with that scanty information in hand, OC Southern Command Maj.-Gen. Tal Russo needed to prepare his forces for an attack he did not exactly know where or how would happen along a border that runs some 230 km.

As other indicators set off alarms in the Southern Command's intelligence division, Russo and his troops got ready. For that reason, for example, Russo decided to evacuate soldiers from borderline positions near the Kerem Shalom Crossing -- where the Death Eaters would later breach the border -- out of fear that anti-tank missiles would be fired at their positions.

About 20 minutes before the attack, the IDF noticed that something was happening on the Egyptian side of the border.

It was exactly then that around 35 gunnies stormed an Egyptian military base some 2 km. from the border, broke into the dining hall as the soldiers were sitting down for the daily iftar meal -- at which Mohammedans break their fast during Ramadan -- and shot and killed 16 soldiers.

They then stole an armored vehicle.

Joined by a pickup truck, estimated to have been carrying half-a-ton of explosives, the armored vehicle began heading towards the border, a regular sight for IDF surveillance teams.

But then, the two vehicles stormed through the Egyptian border gate and then through the Israeli gate as well, the same one Gilad Schalit crossed through late last year.

A few months ago the IDF had placed several concrete slabs directly opposite the gate to prevent such infiltrations, but the armored vehicle had no problem maneuvering itself right past it.

The pickup truck though, got stuck in the sand.

In Israel, the armored vehicle started driving south, in the direction of Eilat, directly alongside the border fence with Egypt. After about a kilometer it encountered a group of soldiers from the Bedouin Reconnaissance Battalion which opened fire with its standard-issued machine guns. Despite sustaining only minor damage, the armored vehicle decided to turn around and head back towards the Kerem Shalom Crossing where it again turned right on Road 232, the main highway that runs through the Eshkol Region.

In the meantime back at the border gate, the pickup truck suddenly went kaboom!, shaking windows in nearby IDF bases. Later, soldiers were to find remains of at least one person, although the body was unidentifiable.

Back to the armored vehicle.

After driving for about 100 meters on the highway, it encountered another force from the Bedouin Reconnaissance Battalion which again opened fire, but failed to stop the vehicle's advance.

Driving at speeds of around 70 kph, the IDF feared that the vehicle was on its way to a nearby Israeli town and decided to send three tanks onto the highway, one from the north, one from behind and one from the west. After the vehicle had crossed some 2 km, an Israeli aircraft, diverted to the scene, fired off a missile, finally causing the necessary damage to stop the vehicle's advance.
Video at link.
The bombing, approved by Russo, was not a simple decision and was unprecedented due to the fact that it took place inside Israeli territory.

After the vehicle stopped, two of the Death Eaters exited it and headed for cover in nearby fields, opening fire at a farming vehicle. In the meantime, the tank, behind, fired two shells from a short distance, destroying the vehicle and killing at least five other Death Eaters still inside.

Later, after a short shootout, IDF soldiers killed the two Death Eaters outside.

Most of the Death Eaters were found to be wearing explosive bomb belts which has led the IDF to believe their target was to infiltrate either an IDF base or a nearby town and kill as many people as possible. The identities of the attackers are still unknown, although a majority of them are believed to be Beduin from the Sinai Peninsula.

The attack was also very similar to the cross-border attack that took place last August near the Netafim Crossing during which eight Israelis were killed. Then, the attackers were also Beduin, were also wearing boom belts and also carried out a sophisticated attack.

While the IDF was successful in averting a major disaster -- such as would have occurred had the attack succeeded -- it ultimately understands that many more attacks are in the planning and that the key to preventing them will be an increase in cooperation with the Egyptians as well as in defenses along Israel's southern border.

Africa Subsaharan
Muslim Terrorists Tell Nigeria's Christian President: 'Convert or Resign'
(CNSNews.com) -- Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
is demanding that Nigeria's Christian president convert to Islam or resign, a stance that again calls into question the B.O. regime's playing down of religion as the primary motivation for the radical group.

In an online video clip released over the weekend, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau told President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
to "repent and forsake Christianity."

The News Agency of Nigeria said Shekau, speaking in Hausa, said the president should convert or resign if he wanted Boko Haram to end its violent campaign.

Presidential front man Reuben Abati dismissed the demand as attempted "blackmail."

"When Nigerians voted overwhelmingly for President Jonathan in the 2011 general election, they knew they were voting for a Christian," he told news hounds in the federal capital, Abuja.

"He has the mandate of Nigerians to serve his fatherland. Nobody should imagine that he will succumb to blackmail."

Inviting an enemy to convert to Islam or face the consequences is a longstanding tradition in Islam, modeled on the example set by the religion's seventh century prophet.

A hadith (the writings and sayings of the prophet) by Sahih al-Bukhari quotes Mohammed as saying, "I have been ordered (by Allah) to fight against the people until they testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that Muhammad is Allah's Apostle, and offer the prayers perfectly and give the obligatory charity, so if they perform a that, then they save their lives an property from me except for Islamic laws and then their reckoning (accounts) will be done by Allah."

(In 2006, Iran's diminutive President Mahmoud Short Round Ahmadinejad sent President Bush a letter interpreted by some scholars as incorporating an invitation to embrace Islam. He urged Bush to make "a genuine return to the teachings of prophets, to monotheism and justice, to preserve human dignity and obedience to the Almighty and his prophets." Reporting on the letter at the time, Iran's hardline Siasat-e Rooz daily said, "It has been the prophet's way to invite the infidel leaders to the right way.")

Boko Haram has grabbed credit for dozens of deadly bombings and other attacks, mostly targeting Christians in northern parts of Africa's most populous country. It has vowed to cleanse northern Nigeria of Christians.

Declared goals of the group, whose name roughly translates "Western education is forbidden," include banning non-Islamic education and extending shari'a (Islamic law) -- currently implemented in 12 northern states -- across the entire country, 40 percent of whose people are Christians.

Despite its increasingly bloody campaign, the B.O. regime so far has resisted calls by U.S. politicians to designate Boko Haram as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO) under American law.

#7  Amen TS4671. Comanches dropped in at Pony Creek Church happened upon the preacher and his nephew on a Saturday afternoon, hung the preacher by his ankles from a tree in front of the church, and built a fire on the ground below his head and watched him die slowly above the flames. They then made a sport of tracking down the nephew who was allowed to get away and scalped him. From that time on riflemen were stationed outside the church during services.

The Comanche raiding party soon returned at night to steal horses in the darkness. Dogs woke up people who assembled and the men of the town started tracking them at dawn. By the afternoon all the Comanches were burning in Hell. (I always loved inspirational Christian sermons with a happy ending such as this one.)

announced on Tuesday that he would take Pakistain Moslem League -- Nawaz (PML-N) leader Khwaja Asif to the courts for his false accusations for the defamation of noble 'Shaukat Khanum' project, DawnNews reported.

Addressing a presser at central secretariat in Islamabad, Khan appealed to the Chief Justice to hear his case as soon as possible.

"I request Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take up this case immediately as the PML-N wants to launch a campaign against Shaukat Khanum Hospital," he said.

Khan lashed out at Asif for hurling allegations against the charity organization.

He said that the allegations were leveled in Ramzan as the PML-N knew that the Shaukhat Khanum Trust collects the majority of its donations during this month.

By hurling the allegations the lives of patients have been put in jeopardy, Khan said.

He said that if the people stopped giving Zakat and money to the hospital it would be very difficult for it to treat the poor people.

19 killed in attack on Nigerian church
(CNN) -- Gunmen attacked a church in the central Nigerian state of Kogi, killing at least 19 people, a military official said Tuesday.

Among the dead was the pastor of the Deeper Life church in Okene, Lt. Col. Gabriel Olorunyomi said.

No one has claimed responsibility, but immediate suspicion fell on the militant Islamic group Boko Haram, which has carried out similar church attacks in the past.

An eyewitness told CNN that the attackers were carrying sophisticated firearms and shot randomly at the members of the congregation gathered for Bible study Monday night. Blood flowed through the church as bodies fell limp, the witness said.

"Let them know that now it's the time for revenge God willing," the group said then. "From now on, they either follow the right religion or there will be no peace for them."
Religious attacks have been on the rise in Nigeria recently. Christian and Muslim militant groups have attacked each other's religious sites, claiming retaliation for prior attacks.

At least three people were killed and 14 were wounded in an explosion at a mosque in Maiduguri last month.

And on June 17, at least 50 people were killed at three churches. Boko Haram claimed responsibility.

"Let them know that now it's the time for revenge God willing," the group said then. "From now on, they either follow the right religion or there will be no peace for them."

Insanity: Scandinavians Launch Ship To Break Gaza Blockade
[Jerusalem Post] Swedish and Norwegian backed SV Estelle set to sail from Oslo to Gazoo; organizers hoping more ships will join.

Scandinavian activist groups are launching an aid ship destined for Gazoo on Tuesday,
They might want to check the rudder and fuel lines one last time before sailing. Also their insurance -- the last lot discovered they weren't able to get any.
hoping to challenge the Israeli blockade and draw international attention to the conflict in a move reminiscent of the 2010 "Freedom Flotilla", organizers said.

"We have the same goal as the previous flotillas, to put an end to the blockade of Gazoo by challenging the Israeli navy," said Torstein Dahle, the leader of the Norwegian section of the activist group "Ship to Gazoo".

"This time around it will be an easy task for the Israelis to stop us because we will be so few and strictly non-violent," Dahle told Rooters at Oslo harbour.

In May 2010, several aid ships trying to run Israel's blockade of the Gazoo Strip were halted by Israeli naval commandos, who killed nine pro-Paleostinian Turks aboard one of the vessels.

A second convoy, planned a year later, did not sail after the organizers said they had been sabotaged.

In November 2011, the Israeli navy boarded two yachts in international waters, one Canadian and one Irish, carrying pro-Paleostinian activists and medical supplies and heading for Gazoo to challenge the Israeli blockade.

The SV Estelle, a 53-metre vessel backed mainly by Swedish and Norwegian groups, will sail from Oslo on Tuesday, and organizers hope several other ships will join it during its journey before it reaches waters off Gazoo in October.

Israel says it blockades seaborne approaches to the Gazoo Strip to prevent arms smuggling to the Paleostinians.

Voters Turned Away As Citizenship Box Creates Confusion At The Polls
Some voters have reportedly been turned away from the polls on Michigan's primary election day for refusing to fill out the new "citizenship" box on their ballot application.

Jocelyn Bensen, Director of the Michigan Center for Election Law, said they've been taking calls from intentionally confused voters across the state regarding this issue. She's criticizing the Secretary of State's office for failing to remind clerks that voters who decline to fill out the citizenship box must still be allowed to cast a ballot.

"It has been the number one issue that we received calls on this morning," Bensen told WWJ Newsradio 950. "And that's why we contacted the Secretary of State's office's again today, urging the office to issue a clarifying statement, which they finally did at around noon."

A spokesperson for the Secretary of State's office said clerks at "some precincts" were reminded about how to handle the citizenship question.

Families of Abducted Pilgrims Warn Turks Could Become their 'Guests'
[An Nahar] The families of 11 Lebanese pilgrims kidnapped in Syria threatened on Tuesday that Turkish citizens would become "guests" in Leb if Ankara does not make serious efforts to set the abductees free.

Sheikh Abbas Zgheib, who has been tasked by the Higher Islamic Shiite Council to follow up the case, told several TV stations that Lebanese authorities hadn't done enough to guarantee the release of the kidnapped pilgrims.

"We hope that we reach the solution that everyone is after," he said.

But he warned that "the families will do what is necessary" after saying that Turkey and Qatar should pressure the abductors to "end the tragedy."

"If the issue isn't resolved soon, the Turks will be our guests," he said in a thinly veiled threat that Turkish nationals could be kidnapped.

Brown's campaign accused Warren of "backpedaling and hypocrisy."

Earlier this year, Brown released six years of tax returns. Warren released four.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Annan Won't Send Representative to Iran meeting on Syria
[An Nahar] Outgoing U.N.-Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
envoy Kofi Annan
...Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh and so far the worst Secretary-General of the UN. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize for something or other that probably sounded good at the time. In December 2004, reports surfaced that Kofi's son Kojo received payments from the Swiss company Cotecna, which had won a lucrative contract under the UN Oil-for-Food Program. Kofi Annan called for an investigation to look into the allegations, which stirred up the expected cesspool but couldn't seem to come up with enough evidence to indict Kofi himself, or even Kojo...
will not send a representative to a meeting on the Syria conflict to be hosted by Iran on Thursday, a U.N. front man said.

Iran has called a ministerial meeting of states that have taken a "realistic and principled stand" on the Syrian crisis. Iran, a key ally of Syria's Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Trampler of Homs...
, has said it expects representatives from 10 countries to attend.

"Neither Kofi Annan nor anyone from his office will attend the talks on Syria in Tehran," a U.N. front man, Farhan Haq, told news hounds. Haq did not give a reason for the decision.

Annan, who announced last week that he is quitting as Syria envoy because of the lack of international support for his peace plan, went to Iran as part of his mission and had wanted the Iranian government involved in talks on ending the 17-month-old civil war.

CID constable killed in Baghdadi: Man, nephew shot dead in Lyari gang warfare
[Dawn] Two men were bumped off in Jehanabad within the remit of the Pak Colony cop shoppe on Monday.

It was suspected that the killings were in retaliation for Saturday's killing of Johar Magsi, a suspected gangster targeted in the same area, SSP-West Amir Farooqui said.

Police said the two men, killed at around 7am, were identified as Abdul Aleem, 54, and his nephew Liaquat Ali, 30.

They said Liaquat was a watchman at the Sabzi Mandi and Aleem was a pick-up driver at the fruit market. Both men were heading to work on Monday morning when assailants riding a cycle of violence targeted them.

The police said the victims suffered multiple gunshot wounds and died before they could be taken to hospital. The bodies were shifted to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
for medico-legal formalities.

Following the killings, tension gripped the Jehanabad area. Additional police and Rangers were deployed to tackle the situation.

The SHO of Pak Colony cop shoppe said that Johar Magsi was killed by assailants in Magsi Mohallah in Jehanabad. He was an associate of the Rehman Dakait group, he added.

It was being suspected that the Saturday killings were carried out by a suspect associated with the Arshad Pappu gang and relative of the victims, Aleem and Liaquat.

The police said they believed that the Monday morning killing was carried out to avenge Saturday's killing.

Policeman bumped off
A policeman was killed in Lyari
...one of the eighteen constituent towns of the city of Karachi. It is the smallest town by area in the city but also the most densely populated. Lyari has few schools, substandard hospitals, a poor water system, limited infrastructure, and broken roads. It is a stronghold of ruling Pakistan Peoples Party. Ubiquitous gang activity and a thriving narcotics industry make Lyari one of the most disturbed places in Karachi, which is really saying a lot....
on Monday evening.

Police said the incident took place in Moosa Lane, near Kausar Masjid, where police constable Mohammad Siddique was rubbed out by gunnies riding a cycle of violence. The victim was sitting at a paint shop near the mosque when he was targeted, the police added.

The constable was posted at the Anti-Extremist Cell of the Criminal Investigation Department headed by SP Aslam Khan.

Police shifted the body to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi for medico-legal formalities. The victim was a resident of Moosa Lane and father of two children.

SP Aslam Khan visited the mortuary to examine the body of the slain police constable. At the time of the incident, the slain police constable was performing surveillance duty in the Baghdadi area. He had also played an important role during the last Lyari operation, SP Aslam Khan said.

The funeral prayer of the slain police constable was offered at the Garden police headquarters on Monday night.

According to official data, more than 50 police personnel have been bumped off in the city during the seven months of the current year.

Bandit killed
At least one suspected bandit was killed when three bandidos were shot at by police during an encounter in Sohrab Goth on Monday night.

Police said the suspects were fleeing after snatching valuables from people in the Sohrab Goth area when a police party chased them, prompting a shootout.

Later, one of the bandidos was found dead near the storm drain under the Sohrab Goth bridge while the police were searching for what they believed the body of a second suspect, SDPO Iftikhar Lodhi said. The third suspect escaped, he added.

At least six cellphones and a pistol were found on the dead, SDPO Lodhi said. The dead could not be identified immediately.

Young man's body found
The unidentified body of a young man bearing torture marks was fished out from a storm drain in North Nazimabad on Monday.

Police said the body was found in the drain in Block-N, and the victim was killed around two days ago. The dead, in his early 20s, appeared to be an Afghan.

The body was taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities. Later it was shifted to the Edhi morgue for want of identification.

Van Jones: Nancy Pelosi is 'greatest ever'
[Politico] As far as Van Jones is concerned, who is the best person in Washington? Nancy San Fran Nan Pelosi.
Congresswoman-for-Life from the San Francisco Bay Area, born into a family of politicians. Formerly Speaker of the House, but it's not her fault they lost. Really. Noted for her heavily botoxed grimace...
He'll even go a step further.

"I think Nancy Pelosi is the greatest person ever," Jones says in an interview with the YouTube channel THNKR. "She is strong. She's tough. She's smart. She gets beat up in the press and nobody sticks up for her and says, 'Hold on a second, everything you don't like about the Democrats -- you think the Democrats are too weak -- would be a thousand times worse if we didn't have Nancy Pelosi, who's been the backbone throughout this whole last couple of years.' I desperately want her to get that speaker's gavel back."

South Waziristan festers
[Dawn] LIKE Africa is a country to many people in other parts of the world, the seven federally administered tribal agencies suffer a somewhat similar fate when they come up for discussion in Pakistain: there is just 'the tribal areas'; all details, distinctions and differences between the constituent units of Fata being subsumed in most debates on the area. But, as a report on South Wazoo in this newspaper yesterday indicated, the experience of each agency has been different and there are crucial distinctions. Back in 2009, when the cut-throats seemed to be in the ascendant, Paks were told that South Waziristan was the root of most militancy problems and drastic action had to be taken. Public opinion was courted to support another major military operation in South Waziristan following the failure of the last one in 2008. Now, nearly three years on from Operation Rah-e-Nijat, only one of the six subdivisions in South Waziristan -- Sararogha -- has been denotified as a conflict area and there too, the return of IDPs has been painfully slow.

What went wrong in South Waziristan? After clearing the Mehsud areas of their human population, the security forces did manage to dominate the physical space for a while. In fact, even today the security forces would argue that they do dominate the physical landscape, given that they control the major roads and the strategic hilltops. But there is also the reality that the newly constructed roads have virtually no traffic, that the security forces are frequently targeted by IEDs and hit-and-run tactics and that even the hardened population of South Waziristan is reluctant to return home for fear of reprisals from the beturbanned goons. Essentially, the military learned how to clear and hold an area under beturbanned goon control but has little understanding about how to permanently keep cut-throats out and restore an area to a civil administration-led state of relative normality. Perhaps what is most worrying is that these problems have slipped off the national radar, like when the tribal areas did after the Soviets were defeated and few were concerned about the new, more lethal problems that were brewing there.

Turkey Rejects Iranian 'Threats' on Syria
[An Nahar] Turkey on Tuesday rejected remarks by a top Iranian defense official that Ankara would be the country next affected by the conflict in Syria and that it was a U.S. stooge.

"We strongly condemn the groundless accusations and extremely inappropriate threats against our country delivered by some Iranian officials, including those by Iranian chief of staff Hassan Firouzabadi," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Firouzabadi had accused Turkey, along with other neighboring countries, of helping "the belligerent objectives of the Great Satan™, The United States."

"If they accept this method though, they should realize that after Syria it will be the turn of Turkey and other countries," he said in a statement posted Monday on the Sepahnews, the official Guards website.

Tunisian Break-Fast Sparks Unholy Brawl
[An Nahar] An unholy brawl between rival hardline Islamists, some wielding knives, broke out in a Tunisian mosque, after hungry members of one group broke their fast a few minutes early, state media reported on Tuesday.

The bust-up occurred on Monday when followers of a certain Salafist scholar began to eat within the precincts of the Hidaya mosque in Beja, northern Tunisia, shortly before the evening call to prayer, which signals the end of the daily Ramadan fast, the TAP news agency reported.

That stirred the wrath of a group of "jihadists" worshipping at the same mosque, who accused their co-religionists of heresy, and the argument degenerated into a fight involving knives and tear gas, according to witnesses cited by TAP.

Fighting between rival Salafist groups is uncommon in Tunisia, with the ultra-conservative Mohammedans more often clashing with secularists, or Islamists deemed too liberal.

On Sunday, a founding member of Ennahda, the moderate Islamist party that won last year's parliamentary elections, was attacked and injured by a radical Islamist at a conference on religion and tolerance.

He had been defending Youssef Seddik, an intellectual reviled by hardline Islamists.

Anti-Regime Gunmen Kill 16, Mostly Alawite and Christian, near Homs
[An Nahar] Anti-regime gunnies killed 16 civilians, mostly Alawites and Christians, in an attack Tuesday on a housing compound for power company employees near Homs, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

"Armed men stormed the Jandar Residential Compound, firing indiscriminately and killing 16 Syrians, among them six Christians, six Alawites -- including the compound director -- and four Sunnis," said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman.

Abdel Rahman said the Jandar Power Station employs Syrians, as well as foreigners, mainly from Iran and Japan, who live with their families at the compound in Jandar village, about 30 kilometers (19 miles) from the central Syrian city of Homs.

"The village and its surrounding areas are Sunni," he added.

Legislation sole right of Pakistani Parliament, says Zardari
[Dawn] Pakistain's president Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday said that legislation was the sole right of the parliament, and that no bargain would be made over this authority, DawnNews reported.

A high level meeting of the Pakistain people's Party (PPP) core committee, co-chaired by the president and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf, was held at the Presidency here on Tuesday. According to presidential spokesperson Senator Farhatullah Babar, the meeting focused on the current political situation in the country.

According to the spokesperson, the president said during the meeting that only an elected parliament held the authority of making laws, and any efforts to create new centers of legislation would be severely opposed.

The president informed his party leaders that the upcoming general elections would be held on time, and directed them to start preparing for the polls.

"The PPP does not hesitate when it comes to the ballot; it believes in the power of the people," Babar quoted the president as saying.
