#3 Maybe I am splitting hairs but pledging to strengthen ties and "joins NATO" are not exactly the same thing. Article 5 for one thing.

If I was Japan, I'd be more worried about China than Russia at the moment.

#6 I think Putin could dismiss all Russian claims to the Kuril Islands and Japan would quiet down about this. I suspect that's the whole point.
