#1 For instance the M777 is built like a race car, with fine tolerances, versus the Soviet 2A65 which is built more like an older tractor.

One has much better performance (and accuracy) under ideal conditions, the other has mediocre performance but is not as susceptible to adverse conditions.

#4 Ah,
So you mean things actually get "USED" in a real war and you need actual production lines that produce more than "5" barrels a year?
Whelp! Who would have thunk that. Not the GrandLogisticians with multiple doctorates on Logistics and Production and Management, for sure.

#5 Frank G;
Not a good comparison. Both an AK and an Ar will handle the mud and wear&tear equally well/badly.
A better comparison would be one between a/any "line trooper rifle" and an ultra-gucci .3 MOA long distance bench-queen that needs barrel adjustment after every 100 rounds, hand-loaded and precisely calibrated ammo and a white-room to manage it's maintenance.

#6 The west, and the US in particular, since the cold war planned on an "80 hour war". With the associated combined arms gear, it was all supposed to over, one way or another.
The notion of fighting a sustained conflict isn't in the plans. Hence Iraq.
