Now has anybody heard of the $700 million "osama put" that has allegedly been wagered on global indices?

Someone placed a bet and if the global markets fall by 30% or more before Sept 30 expiry, that person (or state) will make a LOT of cash. If markets don't fall they will lose a lot of moolah.

Binny laden bet on the options markets before 9/11 so it could be similar. Or not. Or could be a state-based actor: russia? china? norks?

Well, have read a little more and think it's possible the ol' "bin laden put" story is a hoax.

I think it went round the email and was picked up by the TV news where I saw it. Think it most likely just mischievous spam that made it into the Mainstream Media.

Oh well, 9/11 might be important date for Binny Laden but he can laugh it up in his cave because the free world also remembers....

And Laden has now become a laughing stock.

Anybody see the Chaser boy's prank at APEC on the news? Julian Morrow was dressed up as Binny Laden... as a joke, he is now a parody figure

#6 The pic looks photo-shopped. Everything can be faked these days. He has already had internal bleeding from kidney failure, and the same blood infection that killed Christopher Reeve. I doubt that he is alive.

#8 The picture looks unhealthy, to me. The beard is black and neatly trimmed, but the face looks very drawn -- compare the nose particularly to previous photos.

Glad you're back, anon1! Lots of new Rantburgers have joined the conversation since last you posted, a very good thing, I think. :-D

#17 Regarding the Bin Laden bet:

If the Market doesn't fall he doesn't lose alot of money. If they are very "out of the money" they aren't worth very much. It's not much different than buying a lottery ticket.

If you read the forum post, it's a way to raise money by selling unlikely puts to raise liquidity. Some counter-party, perhaps the bank that owns the fund selling the puts has picked them up.

#19 Upon first inspection, I didn't think I was looking at two pictures of the same person. Upon a closer examination, I'm still not sure.

Perhaps it's the camera work (or makeup?) but something about the nose, brow line, and eyebrows seems very off to me.

#20 In Islam, oloring the beard is halal;

however, trimming too much of the beard may be harem, although I suppose if you trimmed a little bit each month that it might be OK.

It seems there are a wide number of opinions on this but I would have thought Bin Laden would keep to the most strict version of the law.

Our security agencies had damn well better do overlay comparisons with all previous speech segments to determine if this is just recycled audio track. If it is they'd also damned well better publicize the shit out of it so this world finally begins to doubt bin Laden's continued existence.

This is a propaganda war and the West still acts like it's policing a bar room brawl.

#30 I looked at the two photos. I don't believe the two photos are of the same individual, even if the one on the right had supposedly been taken when Bin Laden was in his 40s. The nose is different (the one in the portrait on the left is crooked, obviously been broken; the nose is wider), the eyebrows are different (the ones on the left are relatively flat, the ones on the right are arched), and the cheekbones, eyes, forehead and hair are all different. Some things change when one gets older, but unless bin Laden has undergone some radical facial reconstruction, these two photographs are of two different people.
