#2 I dunno. From the review it sounded totally unsuited to our post-modern world. Who wants to read about families facing hardship, showing personal courage and struggling to make a new life?

Don't you have something with dead white guys brutally oppressing the innocent pastoral Commanches or beating their innocent pastoral mules or something? And by dead white guys, I mean dead white persons since the West was settled by our pioneer forefathers *and* foremothers.

Ok, I'm stopping now. It sounds like a great book. Congrats, Sgt. Mom!

#4 I am now reading "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" by Edmond Morris which is also about hardship and indomitable spirit albeit by a blue blood who was tough(er) than nails. And thinking about all Teddy accomplished before he was 28 years old makes you wonder about all these 40 to 60 somethings running for President with the qualifications of couch potato. Hell, Teddy wrote 3 books, all diverse (Naval War Strategy, Natural History and Biography) by his 27th birthday. He had set up his ranches in Dakota Territory, hunted and led the western life - even captured a dangerous band of bandits who had stolen his river boat. Why can't we get people like this to lead the country? Because we have become soft as Charmin, that's why. When you read Celia's book and Teddy's biography, you sit back and say that no way is my son or daughter going to end up in front of the TV playing inane games. Outside and don't come back until something is broken!

#7 Outside and don't come back until something is broken!

As a child, I adored the Just William books by Richmal Crompton. Enid Blyton's books I refused to read because I was completely unable to relate to the characters.

William was a child with a child's view of the world and adventures that invariably got him into trouble with adults. He would end up breaking something. Enid Blyton's characters were essentially little adults whose views and actions meshed with the adult world.

45 years later the Just William books are impossible to find, while Enid Blyton's books are widely available.

I find this a depressing comment on the modern world's inability to let children just be children.

BTW, congrats SgtMom. I hope your book is a big success.

#9 wow - is that Sgt. Mom's book? I read the link on CV from instapundit and thought it sounded like a very interesting book. I'll have to order that one.
