#1 We stand behind you, Fred. I'll be rattling the tip jar later this week.

#2 DDR2 is under $20/GB and quad-cores are getting down near $200 these days, though that's on a desktop motherboard. I dunno if you're running on some server architecture or something.

Anyway, I guess it's about time to hit the hardware fund tipjar...

#3 Many thanks Fred, badanov, the mod squad, and anyone else who has been lending a hand. Love you guys - and gals. Let's keep giving the pond scum something to hate. See y'all at the tip jar.

#4 Hey Fred, when you get to the point of wanting a new server, we could buy it through our company since we get a pretty good discount if your company doesn't have an employee buy program.

Let me know if you are interested.

#6 Are you committed to the Pentium? Or would one of the AMD Athlon 64 X2's be suitable? Also, what form factor: Tower, Mid-Tower, 1U...?
Posted by Pancho Elmomoter8223 2008-03-04 09:23||   2008-03-04 09:23|| Front Page Top

#7 I'm not committed, as long as Linux will run on it. My laptop runs an AMD chip and I'm happy with it.

#8 Dunno how you work a full time job and then do Rantburg too but there are those of us who appreciate it.

#10 I have a "Bigfoot" hard drive with 30 gig storage, and it's only a couple of clams over 100, might look into it.

#11 Sorry, 30 million storage, not billion.

#12 Lately, Intel has been kicking the pants of AMD performance-wise. Also from distant memories the
Core2 Duo uses less power so there is a smaller bill. The drawback is that you will cause less global warming. :-)

#13 Fred, I have 2 extra 1GB sticks of DDR2 that works at 800MHz. If you want them, shoot me an email to my junk post box jas9146 at yahoo. com and I will mail them to you.

#14 I think the usual sequence is that AMD introduces it and a month or two later Intel tops them.

Let me check and see what type of memory we use. It might be then-top-of-the-line 2700.

#19 Fred if you can get someone to pony up for the board with an Intel dual 771 socket (I suggest a server board by by SuperMicro), I can give you one Xeon dual core 5130 (and possibly a second if I can get it from a salvage machine that I may be able to grab) and maybe 2x 1GB of 240 pin PC2-5300. I also have a line on a pair of 80GB Cheetah 7200.9's and a raid controller.

And don't worry - they didn;t "fall off the back of the truck".

I get stuff from friends who are decomissioning servers - I have some friends whose "enviro" corporate types do not allow them to scavenge them (per their compnay = too much of an opportunity to "steal" company property), nor can they reuse parts since its not under warranty from thier server supplier, and they have to pay for "green disposal".

So I get them a cert for the corpse from a local recycler, and pick it for the parts after I test them. HD's and chips are always 1-2 behind the curve, but a Xeon 5130 is a great starter chip, and a dual core will scream.

Most of the time, I try to refurb them with Linux for charity if they are workable. But I hav no real use for server-class cpus. I just happened to keep this one and some ram to cobble together a server - may as well cobble one together for you.

So all, Thats one Xeon 5130 Dual Core Server CPU Socket 771.

Anyone else want to step up?

#20 "Anyone else want to step up?"

I don't know anything about computer hardware, OS, but I can sure donate to the purchase.

Fred, please e-mail me if I can help with this.
