Sounds like doofus was holding the shotgun by the business end and beating the guy with it when it went off. That works best if they thing is unloaded.

#4 Possession of a sawed-off shotgun is a crime in itself. Most states in the USA require a barrel length of at least 18" AND an overall length of at least 24"
