#2 Based on observations in the past hour it looks like it will be 'only' a category 4 when it hits.

However, it is (as noted above) so big that the cone of 140 mph wind could be 130 miles wide.

#4 Thanks Paul, If I can get out of this ice storm it should be a normal trip. I won't be going North of Sydney, that's for sure.
It's hard to tell how bad it will be - the media is as usual, hysterical, but it does look really, really grim.
The Australian newspaper has a link to a guy in Cairns who is staying and Tweeting throughout, if anyone wants a personal view.

#7 Now estimated to cross the coast midnight local time. It will be a long night. Still category 5. I am most concerned for Cardwell, just south of the eye (the bad side) and at the head of a big, open bay. Innisfail to the North just copped it from cyclone Larry a while back.

#12 satellite/radar estimate of winds at landfall was 155 mph

highest measured wind was 120 mph (that I found)

recent estimate is that peak winds of system are about 70 mph
