Did e.g. this display of submission and surrender make sense in the context of Afghanistan and/or the Arab-Islamic world?

Perhaps so.

But it was also observed by the likes of Putin and the Chicoms who would draw their own conclusions from this spectacle that is part of a NATO Article 5 mission.

Provocative weakness has global consequences.
