#4 Jericho's walls date to 8000 B.C. They were a different set from the one that came tumblin' down. The Wiki on it sez the era was pre-pottery Neolithic. You don't go to the effort of building a high, thick wall (17 feet in places) with a ditch and a tower to defend against floods or swarms of locusts. The town itself held 2000-3000 people.

I have this vision of some way pre-Homeric hero, battered and bloody, picking flint arrowheads out of his hairy hide, being told that his deeds will never be forgotten.
