#2 I don't see a way for this to end well. The ChiComs can't allow any challenge to their rule, lest others get the same idea and suddenly you have one of those preference cascades that all repressive governments dread. Hong Kong, having had a big taste of western freedoms, is very reluctant to knuckle under to any mainland crackdown. Prediction: tanks and mass killing - unless the authorities can get some deniable 3rd party violence to shutdown the protests.

I'm a bit surprised this took so long to come to a boil. That One Country, Two Systems business was just kicking the can down the road.

#3 It wouldn't have ever come to a head if the commies hadn't bothered to force the issue in the first place. But then again, they wouldn't have been commies in the first place if they thought like that.
