#2 There's a newish book about it that has more details. Apparently it helped that the Nazi intelligence officer assigned to it was eager for a big catch and that the senior analyst who Hitler trusted to assess the documents had soured on Nazism.

Over the course of a weekend Montagu wrote The Man Who Never Was (1953), which sold two million copies and formed the basis for a 1956 film.

Great book.
