Is THIS the key to cutting carbon emissions? Scientists are developing a TRAIN that can capture CO2 from the air – and say each car could remove 3,000 TONNES per year

#1 You beat me to it TW. I will add that the train would leave a trail of dead brown plants and trees behind, if not bare earth.

#2 current atmosphere has about 420 ppm

back in 1960 or so it was about 320 ppm and we had enough to grow flowers, trees, wheat, etc.

back before, say 1800, it was about 260ppm which probably did limit plant growth in some situations

#3 And plants like more CO2 than we have now. So why do we hate plants

Oh, and every gram of carbon pulled from deposits was originally CO2 in the atmosphere. Why not put it back where it belongs?

#4 RC,

it is true that a lot of plants will do better with CO2 above 420ppm but some of those plants are nasty problems, e.g., vines like poison ivy, Virginia creepers, kudzu, trumpet vine, wild grapevines, etc.

#6 AND - Barely believable: Aether has created diamonds that are made from the air (pictured) by pulling carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere

Both brought to you by the 'flying car' scientists of the 1950's.

#7  but some of those plants are nasty problems

Set the goats on ‘em, Lord Garth. With enough goats there is no plant problem. ;-)

#8 I wanted to put a picture of an old steam locomotive barreling down the track and write something witty about it. But I couldn't.

...and put it where?

#11 And let's not forget, drop down past 150ppm, and ALL plants will die. We are still in CO2 starvation. Normal is about 1200-1800 ppm.

#12 And how much carbon is generated from pulling that train? Is it an electric train?

#13
After a sufficient amount of CO2 has been captured in the collection chamber, it is concentrated and stored in a liquid reservoir.

The liquid can be emptied from the train at a crew change or fuelling stop to be transported into the circular carbon economy or to nearby geological landfill sites.

I take it to mean they release it into green belts or something?

#14 Okay, the science does seem a little... cooky.

#15 Doing a quick search...
3000 tonnes of CO2/year sounds like about the capacity of a "Coldjet P750", (here) which needs about 17KW, which would be of order 45 panels (with some scale depending on time of day, latitude, cloudiness, etc). Panels tend to be about 1.6 square meters.

That's without trying to make this go anywhere. And the cold air output might not be friendly.

#18  Netherlands is going to burn more coal.

China’s been burning more coal. Germany is joining the trend because Germans — legitimately — do not accept being cold except while hiking and skiing... and then only if there is hot cocoa with Schnapps at the end of it. What is the point of working very hard and living sensibly if at the end it feels the same as when one was poor?
