#2 If you only lost that much, why call up 300,000?

#3 6,000 is a large chunk of losses for any military in such a short time frame. You can add another 20,000 or more for wounded.

The Russian defense ministry claims that 90 percent of their wounded have been returned to duty.

Russians say they have lost a lot of specialists to attrition due to contract expiry. As I understand it, Russian military contracts periods last for three months, extendible by the defense ministry only once.

#4 With the finance minister document leak stating they paid out over 48k death payments, the Russians have to say there are more, but not that much.

Realistically the Russians have taken 100-150k casualties.

#5 Estimates I've heard are 50,000 (UK estimate) to 60,000 (US estimate) since they invaded.

Entire units rendered ineffective due to losses, including some of their best trained. Armor losses they can't replace, followed by destruction of ammo supplies they can't replace.

#6 Document link

As of August 25th, 48,759 payouts for deaths for families. Note that the militias and mercenaries are not included in that. So the death toll is well over the listed amount.

Based on numbers provided by the Ukrainians which are always exaggerated.

#9 Maybe, badanov, but they're damned close to the number of payments the Russkis have made.

Which means, if they're based on Ukrainian numbers, the Ukrainian numbers must be pretty accurate.

#10 The document in question also refers to two other dates, and does not specifically refer to February 24th.

One of the dates refers to Russian involvement in Syria and the other in Chechnya. I would suspect that 48,000+ numbers refers to all losses since 1998. In war time, the Russians include all losses combat related or not as total losses.

A 50 percent in Ukraine loss rate means in the Russian Army, the only personnel left are rear services people.

That hasn't happened.

#11 Based on numbers provided by the Ukrainians

Um... no. The US numbers are based off of radio intercepts, HUMINT inside Russia, satellite information with a bit of Ukraine reports. They match them up against another and come up with a number that matches everything they see, rounded down a bit. So if they say 60,000 causalities, that would be a safe bet. Generally casualties are much higher than the estimate as the specter of the "Body Count" from Vietnam still haunts the halls of the Pentagon.

Claiming the US just repeats the Ukrainian numbers is very naïve and wrong. Or just a Moscow stooge repeating Russian talking points. I don't think you are, but it can come off like it.

#12 In June, a DNR official gave 10,000+ casualties w/ more than 2,000 dead totaling 55% of prewar forces. That was before the push for Severodonetsk.

You sure? They're performing like they have no front-line troops left.

#16 It just sounds like NATO has its thumb on the scale, and the Ukrainian military just goes along with it because of the aid they are getting.

The 50,000 number is plain absurd, rounded down or not. The 50,000 number means that the Ukrainians have ground down every shooter in Ukraine Russia has.

#17 We can't have an honest conversation on this issue because to mot in this forum everything that the Russians say is a lie, while the Ukrainians only tell the Gospel truth.

Forkbread tried that for going on six months now. It wasn't true then, it's not true now.

Besmirching someone because you want to win a talking point is bad business. I tolerate because Forkbeard is an idiot.

Frankly I don't give a shit what you tolerate and I don't give a shit about what you think is bad business. I have seen you make good points, I have seen you make bad points. All of us have. What I posted about you is my view from my experiences in the US military and dealing with military information and how it was handled then.

Russia has taken pretty severe casualties, more than even in Afghanistan. The Ukraine has taken pretty severe casualties. The fact Russia can't advance, has had two pretty humiliating retreats, is trying to get occupied territory to be make Russia proper and now having a partial mobilization while trying to increase the overall size of the military so private conscriptavich can garrison those newly acquired territories screams heavy losses and lack of interest in more contract soldiers or retainment.

Russia has failed in all of its previous and rapidly changing war goals. Its military is a husk, it has lost major prestige, Putie-Pie had to kow-tow to China just to get some crumbs for his military and there is no way they can build and replace the high tech weapons they have used and want in any real quantity due to sanctions.

That is the reality.

#21 Only two months ago, the Russian casualty numbers were being bandied about of 80,000, then at least 60,000. You'll notice the number can go higher or lower, and it has gone lower.

Similar to you I have experience in dealing with false numbers as a writer, with regard to the numbers of kommies in America, I realized those numbers were being pulled out of the ass of those expressing them. I can accept the Russians lie, but you seem not to "give a shit" about anything other than what NATO, the Ukrainians and the Pentagon says.

Admit it: They don't know, nor do the Ukrainians, nor do you. Treating a single Russian language document as authoritative "evidence" as the truth defies description.

This is no different. The fact is NATO and Ukraine both have habits for inflating casualty numbers, in Syria (with the help of Ukrainian security services) and now in Ukraine (also with the help of Ukrainian security services).
