Some time ago I shared a flight seat row with a uniformed recruiter. We chatted, his MOS was all about artillery setup. He rotated into recruiting for 'more stability'. I asked him how he liked his new job in human relations. His reply has stayed with me for 40 years.

"I'd rather be digging graves."

#3 There was a reason that the Founders meant to keep the standing army small and rely upon the citizenry. When the Wall came down the excuse for the 1948 worldwide commitments went away. Power, however, is self rationalizing and self justifying.
