NYC payroll project 'riddled with fraud'
[Al Jazeera] Nearly all of the more than $600m New York City paid to the principal contractor for a new payroll system was tainted by fraud, US prosecutors said.

Prosecutors newly indicted two technology executives and their company TechnoDyne LLC, "in connection with a massive and elaborate scheme to defraud", the New York attorney's office said in a statement on Monday.

"In just the few months since the first announcement of arrests and seizures, we have developed evidence that the corruption on the CityTime project was epic in duration, magnitude, and scope," Preet Bharara, the Manhattan US attorney on the case, said in the statement.

Michael Nanny Bloomberg, New York City mayor, has been trying since 2003 to implement "CityTime", a computerised accounting system to automate payroll for hundreds of thousands of municipal employees.

Seven years later, the project is still unfinished and has overrun its original cost estimate from $63m to more than $600m.

Padma Allen served as the chief financial officer and her husband as the chief executive officer of Technodyne, the fraudulent company they had set up.

The Allens are believed to have decamped to their native India, prosecutors said. The News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported that efforts to reach them for comment through online contact were unsuccessful.

The couple and six other city employees are indicted on numerous counts of wire fraud, bribery and money laundering.

Monday's indictment alleges that some of the defendants had conspired to hire unnecessary consultants. They are also accused of inflating charges and work hours.

#1  Al Jazera posted and I quit reading, how in the hell do they think we'll believe THEM.

#2  No wonder we have to pay almost 30% in taxes on NYC hotel bills.

#3  @Redneck Jim, why wouldn't you believe AJ stories. Do you believe everything you read/hear from US MSM? Just recently, headlines in major MSM outlets identified "REPUBLICAN WEINER". This story originally published in NYPost on 6/20.

Obama taps Strategic Petroleum Reserve
23 June 2011 (NPR): The Obama administration has decided to release 30 million barrels of oil from the country's emergency reserve as part of a broader international response to lost oil supplies caused by turmoil in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly Libya.
Now for something completely different (and this will not be reported by the MSM): The United States consumed 18.8 million barrels per day (MMbd) of petroleum products during 2009.
The Big Zero has outdone himself in another stupid and at the same time inadequate action.

#1  At least he doesn't have to borrow more money to let it out.

Only to fill it back up again, at the higher price.

Genius.

#2  It's a very serious emergency - Obumble's poll numbers are way down.

#3  Either a purely political move or a desperate attempt at economic pump priming.

#4  I vote for a purely political move, phil_b. :-(
