Death-row prisoner gets pregnant in solitary
HANOI (Reuters) - A death-row inmate held in solitary confinement in Vietnam for almost a year is pregnant and is seeking a pardon to give birth, a newspaper reported on Thursday. The Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper quoted a police doctor as saying tests in September confirmed that convicted heroin trafficker Nguyen Thi Oanh, 39, was then 11 weeks pregnant.

The report said it was the first time that a death-row prisoner had become pregnant in Vietnam and that police were investigating how it had happened.
You might start with your pals at the prison.
Oanh's husband was serving a jail sentence at another prison in another province, the newspaper said.
It's safe to say he's off the hook.
Oanh was due to face a firing squad this year after losing her appeal against the death sentence she received last year for possession of a billion dong ($63,000) worth of heroin. Trafficking more than 600 grams of heroin in Vietnam is punishable by death or life imprisonment.
Plenty of incentive to tie one on with a guard.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
U.S. Air Force Gets Memorial Next to Arlington National Cemetery
President George W. Bush was helping the Air Force make a dream come true with Saturday's dedication of a hilltop monument anchored by soaring silver stalks that evoke the Thunderbirds' "bomb-burst" maneuver. The $30 million (euro23.9 million) United States Air Force Memorial, set on a promontory next to Arlington National Cemetery and overlooking the United States' capital, was nearly 15 years in the making.

The Air Force was the only military branch without a monument around the capital. Efforts to change that were stymied by lawsuits and congressional action before the current site and design were chosen.

The list of speakers at the ceremony included Bush, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Air Force Secretary Michael Wynne. The Air Force Thunderbirds planned a precision flying demonstration.

The memorial's 17,000-ton metal spires soar as high as 270 feet (82 meters), in graceful arcs that imitate vapors from jets shooting upward from the earth and peeling away from each other.

The site features two inscribed granite walls and an 8-foot (2.4-meter) bronze "honor guard" statue of four figures. A glass wall engraved with the "missing man" formation — a signature maneuver to honor those missing and fallen in the military — provides the only images of aircraft.

"Our medium is the air," said H. Ross Perot Jr., chairman of the memorial's board of trustees and a former fighter pilot in the Air Force Reserve. "Whoever comes to this memorial, you have to look up."

The memorial was the last major work of architect James Ingo Freed, who died in December. Among his other projects is the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington.

The Air Force memorial was first planned for a spot on the other side of Arlington National Cemetery, and Freed's design of a suspended five-pointed star won the competition in the mid-1990s. But the Marines disputed the location, saying it encroached on their cherished Iwo Jima Memorial nearby.

Lawsuits ensued and legislation was passed to prevent construction. Eventually, a new site was donated and the designing process had to start over. Freed won again with a design said to be inspired after the architect saw the Thunderbirds on television. The design has been trumpeted for its modern appeal and its reflection of the Air Force's advanced technology.

Rivers: 'Gibson should die'
Jewish comedienne Joan Rivers has launched a scathing attack on Mel Gibson, insisting the actor should "die" for the anti-Semitic comments he made to police officers who arrested him for drink driving in July. The outspoken comic urges people to boycott Gibson's TV interviews with newswoman Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America, because the exposure will only help to heal the actor/director's tarnished public image.
Only time and public opinion will tell if Gibson can "heal" his image. Is it tarnished? Without a doubt. Can his anti-Semitism be cured? Most likely not.
She tells Celebrity Week: "He is an anti-Semitic son of a bitch. He should f**king die.
"Anti-Semitic? Most probably. Should he "f**king die" for it? Ummmm ... no. People have a right to their own opinions, no matter how idiotic or vile they may be.
Joan's a good progressive liberal so it's okay to call for someone's death. It's different, ya see ...
"I think everyone should not watch the interview with Diane Sawyer. The hypocrisy is what I hate. You know it's all about ratings and Diane Sawyer has them all when she's married to a Jewish guy - Mike Nichols.
Now she's the one who's mistaken. Attributing ethics or morals to media types? Major blow-it.
"It's ridiculous because she'll get great ratings and (Gibson) will be back in business."
I'll ask that people please do not try and tell me; "Oh, that was just the alcohol talking." Blaming drugs in an attempt to exempt someone from having to take personal responsibility for their own actions is ethically bankrupt. Between Gibson's Holocaust denying father and the less-than-flattering portrayal of Jews in his movie, a pattern does seem to be emerging. It's his privilege if he wants to hate Jews but it'd sure be nice if he just STFU about it in public.

#3  Joan Rivers is one of those past her prime plastic surgery freaks with bleached blonde hair who doesn't talk, she yells in a whiney, nasal pitch that is obnoxious. She was funny for a short time, decades ago. She's more likeable than Cindy Sheehan, but not by much. Somehow, probably by sheer grit and intestinal fortitude, she still manages to to grapple the limelight and thrust it upon herself.

#4  Well Joan, I guess we know without doubt where you stand on this issue.
Posted by: SpecOp35 || 10/14/2006 12:42 Comments || Top||

#5  I think that South Park nailed it. Gibson just an actor. He's human, he's probably crazy. He got lots of money and fame by doing something so outrageous and daring: He actually made a movie about Christianity. Broke a Hollywood taboo and the people came to see it.

Personally, I didn't like the movie. I know the point was that we were supposed to feel Jesus' pain. Ok. But I'm not sure what I gained by watching man's inhumanity to man. That was not what Jesus was about.

In retrospect, maybe Gibson was hoping to inflame Christians over the fact that the Jews killed Jesus - something that I think Jews and non-Christians love to get all excited over.

In one of life's ironies, it is mostly non-Christians who are the ones who insist that Christians blame the Jews for Jesus' death. There is even an entire room in the Holocaust museum that sets forth the premise that Martin Luther set the stage for the Holocaust because he fired up those nasty Christians to hate the Jews for killing Jesus and thus it was the hate-filled Christians who made it possible for Hilter to kill so many jews.

I often wonder if the Holocaust museum curators can now see the bigotry in that display when it is easy to see today that it is the culture of blame in the liberal and islamist cultures that makes such evil possible. Christianity is about forgiveness, liberalism and Islam is about blame. It doesn't matter who is chosen as the scapegoat - it simply needs to comprise a group of "others".

I know from previous posting that pointing this out inevitably causes cog dis with non-Christians. But the reality is that Christians have always blamed Pontius Pilate for Jesus's death. The act of Pilate washing his hands is of far, far, deeper significance for Christians than the actions of the Jews.

#7  The SCRIPTURAL point about Christ's spiritual and physical deaths were that ALL humanities sins were paid for by Christ. My sins were as responsible as an Pharissee Jews in AD 33.

THAT is what The Scriptures tell us and if we in Christ only maximized them over tradition, men, our own brothers in Christ would make less errors such as blaming Jews. Jesus' destiny was to pay for our sins,it didn't matter if Pharisee Jews wanted Him dead or pagan Romans or us.
Posted by: Phenias Hupineter8498 || 10/14/2006 14:18 Comments || Top||

#8  that's true.

The point I'd like to make on this Mel Gibson thread is that Christians see it like this: Mel is human. He's a sinner - like me.

People like Joan Rivers see it like this: Mel Gibson is a sinner - unlike me. STONE HIM! CRUCIFY HIM!

Permit me to suggest anything by Aardman Animation. "Curse of the Wererabbit", with their beloved characters, Wallace and Gromit won an Oscar as have some of their shorts, like "The Wrong Trousers". Nick Park is the heir apparent to claymation's throne, producing sophisticated, articulate and engaging humor that somehow remains almost squeaky clean while appealing to young and old alike. Mel Gibson even provided the voice of Rocky in "Chicken Run". If you have not seen any of this material, run out and rent it right away. Their three shorts, "A Grand Day Out, "The Wrong Trousers" and "A Close Shave" belong in every home library.

#27  Gibson is human and thus a sinner like the rest of us. He has asked for forgiveness and I intend to give it to him. His life is a journey that is no less difficult than yours or mine. Perhaps this event was a lesson for him to expose to himself the bias that his father instilled in him. By being forced to face it in a very public manner, he may have been able to better understand it and grow from it.

Those who think he should f***ing die because of his sins are the ultimate parody of their own intolerance.

I don't have to like or dislike Mels films -it's unrelated to his own personal journey. But if I can't forgive him for his shortcomings, why should I ever expect forgiveness for my own?

I'm sure those of you who are perfect would not understand.

#28  Mrs. Rivers is not a lady. What she said was unnecessary and rude. She always did like to shock for comedic effect, which was occassionally funny. This statement was not amusing.

For centuries the Catholic and Orthodox churches taught that the guilt for Jesus' death lay on the shoulders of all the Jews down through history. This was used as justification for incident after incident of mass murder and expulsion, starting in the 2nd century C.E., and ending with the Holocaust. Martin Luther encouraged the rulers who adopted his version of Christianity to kill the Jews in their territories, because they did not convert en masse when he presented them with his new and improved version.

I'm glad y'all appreciate that I am not to blame for the death of your messiah, but even yet there are those who call themselves Christian who do not differenciate. In Oberammergau, Germany, they still put on a Passion play every few years in which horn-headed Jews eagerly take on the blame for murdering Jesus for themselves and their decendents. The performances are always sold out well in advance; the script is centuries old, and the locals refuse to adjust it to make it less hate filled.

Sorry TW, don't know where you are getting that. We don't have time to argue - but while I'm sure you can find historical examples and Christians living today (Mel's dad) that blame Jews - it's just not grounded in the Christian faith.

Karmiel boy hospitalized after swallowing whistle
A seven-year-old boy from Karmiel was hospitalized in Nahariya on Friday after swallowing a whistle the night before.
"Hokay, little boy! Wossa motta you?"

"Swallowed a whistle, huh? What'd your Momma say to that?"
He was listed in light condition, suffering from breathing difficulties and pains in his chest. Doctors were waiting for the whistle to exit the boy's body naturally;
"Nurse! Give him an enema!"
however, if it didn't, they were preparing to operate.

Nurse 'savaged' by Swinezilla
A nurse has spoken of her terror after she was attacked by a giant pig which charged the horse she was riding and then savaged her after she was thrown to the ground. Suffering from broken ribs from the fall, Carolyn Robinson feared for her life as the enraged pig hurtled at her. The ferocious beast, which she describes as "huge", mauled the 51 year old and snapped at her legs as she tried desperately to fight it off while lying prone in a quiet country lane. The pig was eventually driven off by Mrs Robinson's worried teenage daughter, with the help of passers-by.

Animal experts say the attack could have been deadly as pigs have been known to become violent if they feel under threat or when protecting a food source or their young. The animal is believed to still be on the loose in Hampshire's New Forest and police are urging people to be cautious and report any threatening pig incidents.
"Calling all cars! Be on the lookout for a giant boar hog! Suspect is armed and dangerous! That is all!"

ammonia taste
IIRC, untreated shark flesh has the taste of urine, which brings this question : how did the early shark flesh eaters know urine's taste in the first place?

#5  #3 a5089 - dunno, but some Hindus drink their own urine - maybe others do/did too?

(BTW, urine itself is sterile, assuming no disease. I'd be more concerned about the cleanliness of the delivery system.)

#6  how did the early shark flesh eaters know urine's taste in the first place?

According to a few books I've read on food history, one of the earliest ways of attracting migrating herds for purposes of domestication involved large human groups urinating in one single spot over an extended period of time. Most animal trails will lead to one of three places: water, forage or salt licks. By accumulating uric acids, early humans created artifical salt deposits and were able to steer herds their way. It stands to reason that someone along the way probably tasted the stuff.

Shamans were also known for drinking their own urine in order to harvest excreted residual psychedellic drugs contained therein.

Even disregarding everything mentioned above, the ripe aroma of a baby's soggy diaper gives a strong clue as to what flavor ammonia might have.

#9  Saw Frank at Winterland in SF with the complete Overnight Sensation band. George Duke, Ian Underwood, Jean Luc Ponty, the whole gang.

In some ways it's a pity that Zappa was so obsessed with putting a well-deserved hand up the skirts of Middle America. His creative genius knew no bounds and in many respects, he was one of America's finest classical composers. Listen carefully to "The Dogbreath Variations" off of "Uncle Meat" and you will notice that you are listening to a piece for classical chamber orchestra. A very perverted classical chamber orchestra, but still quite fine, nonetheless. "King Kong" is another magnum opus of Zappa's. Their version of Ravel's "Bolero" cut directly to disk (which prohibits even a single mistake) is a tour de force.

First of four C-17s is on its way to replace Hercules
The first of Australia's new fleet of four C-17 Globemaster III's was rolled out of the hangar this week in California, ahead of its initial flight later this month. In the slow-moving world of defence procurement, US aerospace giant Boeing is moving at lightning speed to deliver the big four-engine jet airlifter before the end of the year.
Boeing isn't Airbus.
The aerospace giant this week confirmed that it remained on track to deliver the first plane by November 28, less than seven months after Australia signed a letter of agreement with the US Government. "It's very exciting to see Australia's first C-17 become a reality so quickly," said Boeing C-17 program manager Dave Bowman.
How the Airbus M400 doing?
The RAAF is making a long-term investment of more than $2 billion to acquire the big planes but said the deal would boost Australia's flexibility and self-reliance. Until now, it has relied on the smaller C-130 Hercules and ageing foreign charter aircraft.

Defence officials estimated 50 C-130 flights over a month could now be achieved by a C-17 in half the time with perhaps only 20 sorties. The big plane carries only three crew, including a loadmaster, and can lift almost four times the load of a Hercules.

Australia's planes are the most advanced variant of the C-17 and feature upgrades to combat lighting, formation flying capability and flight control software. The aircraft will be identical to their US counterparts other than its RAAF markings and a black stallion signifying it will be operated by No36 Squadron from Amberley RAAF base in Queensland.

The first plane is scheduled for a welcome ceremony in Canberra before arriving at Amberley in early December. Another plane is due to be delivered next year with the final two scheduled to arrive in 2008.

Home Front: Politix
Lieberman looking for an apology over statements on his civil rights record
The U.S. Senate campaign exploded today into a demand for an apology and back-peddling between Senator Joe Lieberman's campaign and Ned Lamont. The flap is over an endorsement Lamont got yesterday that seems to have blown up in his face. The late afternoon flap that started yesterday gave the Lieberman campaign apparatus a reason to pounce today. The Senate campaign dust-up following a Ned Lamont news conference yesterday continued to follow him today with the Lieberman campaign demanding an apology.

“When Lamont got the endorsement of the Connecticut Federation of Black Democratic Clubs, former state treasurer Hank Parker of New Haven implied that Lieberman's background and support of the civil rights movement was phony -- an allegation strongly denied and proven wrong by Lieberman later in the day.”
When Lamont got the endorsement of the Connecticut Federation of Black Democratic Clubs, former state treasurer Hank Parker of New Haven implied that Lieberman's background and support of the civil rights movement was phony -- an allegation strongly denied and proven wrong by Lieberman later in the day. On a radio call-in program on WNPR this morning a caller identifying herself as a Lamont campaign volunteer asked him about it. Lamont: "Frankly, I was taken by surprise, I should have stood up and said at the time, 'that's unsubstantiated, it's not part of what I believe.'"

Caller: "Your campaign has got to come forward with more than just a press release, you've got to hammer that home that you disassociate yourself with that."

Lamont: "Well look, I, I take Joe Lieberman at his word regarding his service back in the 1960's, I disassociate myself from any of the comments at that press conference yesterday."

Did Lamont give the apology the Lieberman campaign asked for? Lamont says, "Look, I think I have. I was happy to get the endorsement of a leading civil rights organization here in Connecticut. There were some comments that came up at that meeting by some of the endorsers one of the endorsers that took me by surprise."

"Don't put this on Hank Parker, uh, this is an open letter to me, um, at a press conference for Ned Lamont," says Lieberman.

Parker issued a statement through the Lamont campaign saying "It is true that he marched with Dr. King, but I believe Dr. King would be disappointed in his record as a senator over the past 18 years." The Lieberman campaign also says that a brochure saying Lieberman is the point-man for the president's plan to privatize social security is twisting the facts.

#1  but I believe Dr. King would be disappointed in his record as a senator over the past 18 years

Mr. Hank Parker ought to ask himself what Dr. King would think of Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and perhaps even the Connecticut Federation of Black Democratic Clubs for using 'civil rights' as a political weapon.

Home Front: Culture Wars
U.S. says Philadelphia violates voting rights
(Reuters) - The city of Philadelphia has failed to provide Spanish-language ballots and other voting materials to minority voters in recent elections, in violation of federal law, the U.S. Justice Department said in a lawsuit on Friday.

The government said the city had violated the rights of Spanish-speaking voters that are protected under the Voting Rights Act. "In light of the serious problems faced by minority language citizen voters in Philadelphia, we hope that city officials and the Justice Department can reach an agreement quickly to begin essential remedial measures in time for the 2006 federal elections," said Assistant Attorney General Wan Kim.

Under the Voting Rights Act, jurisdictions with large populations of Spanish-speakers or other languages must provide voting materials in English as well as other predominant languages. The government's lawsuit also charges that the city of Philadelphia prevented Spanish-speaking voters from receiving assistance at voting places, which also is required by the Voting Rights Act.

In July, President George W. Bush signed into law a 25-year extension of the 1965 civil rights law that aims to encourage minorities to vote.

The government's complaint against Philadelphia was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
S'okay to open and ignore US Law and declare your Moonbat Welfare Haven a "Sanctuary City", but not this. *sputter* This is an outrage!
I'm afraid I don't get it. If you're a native-born citizen, you learned English in school. If you're a naturalized citizen, you had to learn at least some English to pass the test and get your papers. Why should the ballot be printed in any language other than English?

#1  you had to learn at least some English to pass the test and get your papers

IIRC, the Clinton Administration did away with that requirement. Needed to get more otherwise unqualified but potential Democratic voters registered.

#6  My wife is originally from Puerto Vallarta. When she migrated to the US, LEGALLY, in 1984, she did not speak one word of English. She learned it fluenty in 6 months on her own.

If you want to fully participate in American society, and not be relegated to the fringe, English is simply a must. Spanish language ballots are an insult, I believe, to hispanic Americans. They send the message that America will accomodate the lazy. Besides, how can you become fully informed about political events, candidates, issues, etc., while living in the US and only speaking Spanish? All of your news sources would have to be in Spanish, and from what I've sampled, they are notoriously liberal and one-sided.

Although my wife's English is very good, I decided a few years back to learn Spanish, so we could speak in her native language as well as mine. But that's a matter of personal preference.

The government's nationwide policy should be no ballots in a foreign language. If an non-English speaking immigrant truly wants to participate in American government, the fact that the ballot is in English would be a great incentive to learn.

How To: Food Stamps in Four Hours
Food-Stamp Program Finally Speaks Their Language
KMEX helps an effort to get Latino immigrants to apply for food stamps. An O.C. group takes it a step further and offers a class on how to do it.
Though it goes against the conventional wisdom of anti-illegal immigration supporters, those who enroll the poor in the federal food stamp program say they've struggled for years to get immigrant Latino families signed up.

Now a Spanish-language news report and television ad campaign have spurred thousands of immigrants in Orange County over the last several weeks to contact a nonprofit organization that offers a Spanish-language class called "Food Stamps in Four Hours."

The stream of immigrants contrasts sharply with what was going on just a few months ago when only a handful of immigrants would attend the free course.

The news report and ads were heard throughout Southern California, but those who responded in Orange County were directed to a nonprofit organization. Most other callers to the toll-free number were directed to county offices.

#2  The agreement led Mexican Consul Luis Miguel Ortiz Haro to tout the food stamp program on Univision's KMEX Channel 34 six weeks ago.
