SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) A pet rabbit named Sugar Bunny was stolen from a preschool and fliers protesting circus animal acts were left in its empty cage. The preschools children gathered in a circle Monday to remember Sugar Bunny.
We talked about how some people have different ideas about animals, said teacher Lori Peters. Some people dont think they should be in cages.

Sugar Bunny vanished from the Community Building Childrens Center on Saturday, teachers said. Somebody stoled him, 5-year-old Zion told The Spokesman-Review, which gave only the first names of him and other children in a report on the heist. Im sad.
The fliers expressed protests against the Ringling Brothers Circus, which was in town during the weekend, and had a picture of a bear trying to escape from a cage. The fliers bore the names of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Northwest Animal Rights Network.
Its unclear whether the preschool will find a new pet, Peters said.
"Pols like Bush are ensuring an escalation of tactics," said Josh Harper, a Seattle animal rights activist who was hauled before a federal grand jury in Portland this year. If President Bush sparks a renaissance in the nuclear-power industry, "they will be targeted," Harper predicted. If the nuclear plants are too heavily fortified, he said, the cross hairs will shift to the plant executives' homes -- or the executives themselves.

Based on political messages at the scene, this makes the action an act of terrorism. They should be found, charged, convicted and executed like all who commit, support or fund terrorism.

So the rabbit was stolen and released into the wild where he was promptly killed and eaten by a coyote or wild dog, since he has no outdoor survival skills.

You see, I am inordinately proud of my religion and why shouldn't I be? It took incredible skill and hard work on my part to be conceived not to mention all the determination it took me to master breathing. A 15-year-old boy from the Urals suffered acute frostbite after riding the wing of a Boeing-737 plane on a two-hour flight from Perm to Moscow, Russian radio station Mayak reported on Monday.
After clinging on for the entire 1300-kilometer (808-mile) flight to Vnukova Airport, the boy, named Andrei, collapsed onto the tarmac. His arms and legs were so severely frozen that rescuers were at first unable to remove his coat and shoes, the radio station said.
The airport did not confirm the report. "We have no information on this," the Vnukovo press service told RIA Novosti.
However, Moscow's air and water transport control department said the radio's claim was true. A department spokesman said the incident occurred on Friday, and that the boy's parents were immediately informed, and flew to the capital the same day.
Doctors said it was nothing short of a miracle that Andrei survived the flight, with temperatures hitting minus 50 degrees Celsius (-58 Fahrenheit), the radio station said. The Boeing-737 has a cruising speed of 900 kmh (560 mph).
The boy reportedly made the journey after a commonplace domestic dispute. Angry with his father, who reportedly has a drinking problem, and with his mother for siding with her husband in family rows, Andrei ran away to the neighboring village, where his grandmother lives. On reaching the village, he decided to go on, and hitched a 220-km (137-mile) ride to the regional center, Perm, where he was dropped off at the airport.
It remains unclear how Andrei was able to climb on a plane wing un-noticed, and the Perm Airport security service is being asked some serious questions, the radio station said.
Andrei is now being treated in a Moscow hospital, Radio Mayak said.
Andrzej Wajdas film Katyn will represent Poland to the Academy Awards.
The film of the Oscar winning legend of Polish film making has been chosen from among 16 candidates, by a special committee. Katyn is the first film in Polish history about the massacre of Polish officers by Stalinist NKVD services in 1940. It is not a historical account of the tragedy , but a story of the Katyn lie, a moving study of the women who for years waited for their beloved ones to return. The film will be the Polish candidate to the category of foreign movies competing for the Oscar.

About four years ago I read a Russian book about the efforts of Russians citizens, during and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, to provide information about this massacre. Many Russians remember seeing the Polish prisoner in various places and heard bits and pieces of information, and there was an informal effort by the public to save and provide whatever information was still available.
That book included also an argument made by some that the Germans did not accidentally discover the mass graves. Rather, there was some kind of collaboration between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in the period between the invasion of Poland and the invasion of the Soviet Union. During that period, the Soviet Union murdered the Polish POWs with the knowledge and even at the behest of Nazi Germany. Therefore, after Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union, the Germans knew exactly where to go to find the mass graves.
The whole story about the Germans finding these graves rather accidentally was concocted later by the Germans and supported by the Soviets.
The book did not provide much solid evidence for this explanation, but the evidence was a bit more than just circumstantial. I don't remember details.
I don't remember the author or title of the book. It was in Russian. I worked for a Polish-American newspaper for a while, and the editor had the book in his office.

I recall now how that Russian book was developed. During the Glastnost period, several Soviet journalists published articles about the massacre, which the Soviet Union still blamed on the Nazis. These first few articles prompted a lot of responses from Soviet citizens, who provided their own memories of what they themselves had seen and heard. The journalists then used these letters for some follow-up articles, which prompted more letters, and the collection of information snowballed. The author of this book then assembled all this new information into a book.

NEW DELHI: Does the inclusion of a larger number of castes in the backward class list by the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) indicate deterioration of their social status? Does a caste which gets designated as "backward" and becomes eligible for quota benefits ever sheds the tag?
A seemingly skeptic Bench of the Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan put these questions to the Centre. The barrage of questions came after the Centre had argued that caste should be the starting point for the identification of a "backward" class.
Appearing for the Centre, solicitor-general G E Vahanvati said the NCBC followed a stringent procedure in dealing with claims by castes for inclusion in the backward class list. Seeking to rebut the argument of anti-quota groups that 27% reservation for OBCs in educational institutions was provided by the Centre without identifying the genuinely needy, Vahanvati said the list of backward class people was prepared by NCBC, which had rejected many pleas for inclusion of castes in the list.
The Bench, also comprising Justices Arijit Pasayat, C K Thakker, R V Raveendran and Dalveer Bhandari, differentiated between rejection of a plea for being included in the list and exclusion of a caste from the list after periodic review.
"Inclusion of a caste in the list would mean that it was previously socially advanced and did not figure among the backward class communities. But with time, their social status deteriorated and they had to be included in the list. This means more and more castes are getting backward as there are only inclusions and none being excluded from the list," it said.
Vahanvati said as per the procedure before NCBC, a caste could be excluded from the list only if someone filed a complaint alleging that a caste had become socially advanced. "No petitions have been filed seeking exclusion of any caste," he said.
The Bench replied, "Merely because there is no complaint, NCBC cannot abdicate its duty to conduct a periodic review of the social status of castes included in the backward list."
Referring to the swelling number of castes in the backward list, the Bench said, "This means for 60 years, people who were disadvantaged continue to be backward. If this is so, then what is the meaning of the arrangements for social advancement of backward community for all these years?"

ISLAMABAD: Only 194 of 3,505 candidates, who appeared in Federal Public Service Commission competitive examination-2007, could pass the written test with a pass percentage of only 5.5 percent. According to the result the FPSC announced here on Monday, a total of 4,811 candidates applied for the exam, of which 3,505 appeared, while only 194 of them could pass the written examination. Among the passing candidates were 134 male and 60 female candidates, including two disabled.

Several clerics, Muslim organizations and Islamic scholars came out in defense of Bollywood action star Salman Khan and his family yesterday slamming the clerics of Darul Ifta Manzar-e-Islam madrasa for issuing a fatwa, which declared the actor and his family as non-Muslims after they were shown on TV placing a Hindu elephant deity in their house and worshipping it.
Salim Qureshi, trustee of Anjum Al-Quran madrasa in Madanpura, a Muslim suburb in Mumbai, said that by issuing such fatwas, Muslims are being mocked. It is these same clerics, who were caught on television cameras some months ago, while accepting cash for issuing fatwas. Its a shame. Such clerics have lowered the image of Islam, Qureshi said.
The clerics of the Darul Ifta Manzar-e-Islam madrasa had stated in their fatwa that Islam prohibits idol worship and the star and the family would have to recite the Shahadah (a declaration stating that there is no God but Allah and that Muhammad (pbuh) is his messenger) and would also have to seek Allahs forgiveness and promise not to repeat the offense in order to become Muslims again.
According to Obaid Siddiqui, professor at Jamia Millia Islamic University, there is lot of misconception and ignorance about fatwas. Everybody cannot issue a fatwa and it is not a ruling, but an opinion, Siddiqui said. Salman Khan is doing something in his personal life, nobody can tell him what to do, he added.
All India Muslim Law Board member and Delhi Minorities Commission chairman Kamal Farooqui also backed Salman saying it is his personal choice and the fatwa was uncalled for.
A Muslim intellectual strongly criticized the clerics and said They should be ignored. If Salman Khan wants to change his religion the Indian Constitution gives him the right to do so.

Liberals have been pissing in the punch bowl for so long now that I'm surprised this didn't happen a lot sooner. While not all AIDS activists are virulently pro-gay, the gay community has been so antagonistic towards straight culture that they're going to lose a lot of the support they might once have had. I know this because I've been recalibrating my own tolerance for their shit in the last couple of years.
