Tehran police chief arrested in brothel with six prostitutes
Tehran, 10 March (AKI) - Tehran's police chief, Eliot Spitzer Reza Zarei, has been arrested after he was found nude in a local brothel with six naked prostitutes, according to report on the Iranian Farda News.
"The only way I'd ever get arrested is to get caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy ..."
Farda News is a website said to be close to the mayor of Tehran and former chief of the police forces, Mohammed Bagher Qalibaf.

Following the raid, Zarei stepped down from his post as police chief.
More than Eliot Spitzer has done so far.
The news of his arrest however was not reported by any official Iranian news agency.
Take note, Iran apologists, even Pinchy has covered the Spitzer story.
According to a popular Iranian website Gooya, the order to raid the brothel was given directly by Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi, chief of the judicial authorities.

Before he was arrested, Zarei was in charge of the programme for the 'moralisation of the city'. It is alleged that in the past six months, hundreds of young people have been arrested in Iran for not respecting the Islamic code of behaviour.
It's just too rich: one thing we know about all people in power, they all have feet of clay.

Africa Subsaharan
Terror Tactics Described at Taylor Trial
AMSTERDAM, Netherlands (AP) - During West Africa's civil wars, Charles Taylor encouraged his fighters to "play with human blood" to create fear among his enemies, a former militia commander testified Wednesday at Taylor's war crimes trial.
Wouldn't it be easier to play with a femur? It certainly would inspire just as much fear ...
Joseph Marzah described militia checkpoints meant to terrify the population, with human heads mounted on sticks and human intestines used as rope to barricade roads. He said Taylor ordered him to kill civilians, telling him after one march into Bong County in Liberia that anyone there must be collaborating with the enemy. "We executed everybody—babies, women, old men. There were so many executions. I can't remember them all," Marzah told the court.

Prosecutors described Marzah as one of their key witnesses, testifying with inside knowledge of the former Liberian president's operations in Liberia and neighboring Sierra Leone, where he is accused of responsibility for the widespread murder, rape and amputations committed by soldiers loyal to him.

Taylor, 59, is accused of trading so-called "blood diamonds" mined in Sierra Leone and smuggled through Liberia to finance the civil war, and of orchestrating the violence from his presidential palace in Liberia's capital, Monrovia. The first former African head of state to face an international tribunal, Taylor has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. He is being tried by the U.N.-backed Special Court for Sierra Leone, which has been hearing the case in The Hague, Netherlands.

His trial began last year but was halted for six months after a chaotic first day on which he fired his legal team. The case resumed in January, when prosecutors began call the first of dozens of witnesses expected to testify.
They should be finished in 2011, unless Carla del Ponte intervenes ...
Marzah, who described himself as Taylor's chief of operations and commander of the Death Squad that specialized in executions, said he smuggled both arms and diamonds for Taylor.

Weapons were flown in to Sierra Leone on what he described as a Russian cargo plane brought by a "white guy with a big stomach" who was a friend of Taylor's. He did not mention the man's name.
Would it be Viktor Bout by any chance?
Marzah said forces of Taylor's National Patriotic Liberian Front were told on several occasions to show no mercy to civilians. "He made us understand that you have to play with human blood so enemy forces would be afraid of you," Marzah said.

At times Marzah became frustrated and angry when questioned too closely about the timing of events, saying he had been with Taylor "from beginning to end," and had done too much to recall the dates of each event.

Marzah said he was instructed to assassinate a militia leader, Issa Sesay, because he was about to sign a peace agreement, but Sesay evaded Marzah's ambush. He described intercepting a four-vehicle convoy that was believed to be carrying Liberia's then-President Samuel Doe, but Doe was not there. The commander of the group called Taylor for instructions. Taylor "said to execute them with knives," Marzah testified. "There were about 72 of them, and we executed them with knives the same day."

Doe was killed in September 1990, which Marzah said was shortly after the abortive ambush.

Bangladesh
Govt won't pass any anti-Islam law
The caretaker government has not passed any "law" regarding inheritance, Law Adviser AF Hassan Ariff yesterday said, adding that the National Women Development Policy, 2008 has been misinterpreted.

During a view exchange meeting with the Ulema (Islamic scholars) at Islamic Foundation in Baitul Mukarram, the adviser also said that the government has no plan to enact any law that goes against the rules and spirit of Islam. "No such 'law' has been passed about inheritance and there is no question of enacting such a law," Hassan Ariff, also adviser to the religious affairs ministry, said adding "it is really regretful as a situation of misunderstanding is created over a matter that does not exist at all."

The adviser held lack of communication for the wrong representation of the policy and stressed the need for enacting Right to Information Act to avoid any such confusion over government decision in future.

At the meeting, the Ulema urged the Muslims of the country not to act on any rumours or speech that is given by 'people or the media who usually talk against the spirit of Islam.' The meeting was convened as rumours spread that the latest women development policy contains statement on inheritance law that opposes Islam.

Hasina taken to hospital
Detained former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been taken to a hospital in the capital Dhaka for treatment, officials said on Tuesday. “Ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been escorted to Square Hospital at Dhanmandi under tight security,” a senior prison official said. Hasina is being prosecuted by special courts for extortion and graft charges. She was treated in hospital last month for eye and ear ailments and high blood pressure.

Authorities said then that Hasina could not be admitted at the hospital for security reasons. Her party, the Awami League, said at the time that the ex-PM’s health condition was critical and demanded her treatment abroad as Hasina was unwilling to undergo treatment in any Bangladesh hospital due to security worries.

Britain
Britain: MoD lost 11,000 military ID cards
A new data security row has hit the Ministry of Defence after it emerged that an "extraordinary" 11,000 military ID cards have been lost or stolen in the past two years. Opposition parties said the losses are yet more proof that the Government's plans for a national ID card scheme would fail to improve security.

According to MoD figures released in a Commons written answer, 4,433 ID cards disappeared in 2006 and a further 6,812 went missing last year.
Practice makes perfect!
The disclosure follows the loss of a laptop with details of more than 150,000 people who had applied to join the Armed Forces. The computer was stolen in January from a Royal Navy officer's car parked overnight in Birmingham.
Hmmm... Brit-born jihadis have sworn to kill Muslims that join the Armed Services. So ...
The Government has been under pressure over data security since the loss last year of the entire HM Revenue and Customs child benefit database with the personal details of 25 million people.

The Conservative defence spokesman Gerald Howarth said the latest case was "yet another reason why the public has no confidence in the Government's ID card plans for the rest of the population".

Nick Harvey, the Liberal Democrat defence spokesman, said the figures were "just extraordinary" and made a mockery of the security procedures at military facilities. "This shows the inherent frailty of ID card schemes with cards and data getting lost on this scale and is yet another proof that schemes, such as the ID card database, simply won't improve our security against terrorism."

A spokesman for the MoD said the department took the issue "very seriously" and that steps were being taken to improve general security awareness. "Military ID cards form one part of the security measures we have in place," the spokesman added. "They have photographic ID on them, so it would be difficult for them to be used by individuals they have not been assigned to."
Yeah, right.

Europe
Three generals on trial for war crimes in Croatia
The Hague, 11 March (AKI) – Three Croatian generals went on trial before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on Tuesday for crimes allegedly committed against Serb civilians in 1995.
Only took thirteen years ...
Ante Gotovina, Ivan Cermak, and Mladen Markac are the first Croatian officers to be tried for crimes committed in the operation, Storm, in August 1995.

More than 350 Serb civilians were killed, thousands of homes were destroyed and up to 250,000 Serbs were deported from the country, prosecutor Alan Tieger told the court. He said he would prove that the three generals were part of a “joint criminal undertaking” aimed at the “violent elimination of Serbs” from Croatia.

Serbs, who accounted for 12 percent of Croatia’s four million people before the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia in 1991, rebelled against Croatia’s secession and proclaimed their own Republic of Serb Krajina. Hundreds of thousands of Serbs were killed by the Croatian state in World War II and feared repetition of the crimes when Croatian nationalist president Franjo Tudjman, who led the country to secession, came to power.

Tieger said that Tudjman, who died in 1999, masterminded the Storm operation, not only to retake territories controlled by local Serbs, but to completely eliminate Serbs from the country. The decision was taken at a meeting on 31 July 1995, when Tudjman allegedly told his generals that Serbs “should be dealt such a blow that they practically disappear,” Tieger said.
'Practically disappear' -- that's pretty clear.
“Tudjman’s long range political ambition was to expel Serbs from Croatia because he believed that they threatened the state stability,” Teiger stressed. “At one point he told the American ambassador that Serbs were ‘a cancer on the Croatian skin’,” the prosecutor said.

According to the indictment, Gotovina, Cermak and Markac were the key generals who carried out “the joint criminal undertaking”. Tieger claimed the operation in which Croatian forces crushed the Serb rebellion, “for most Serbs meant the end of life on the territories on which their predecessors lived”.

Croatian forces were “systematically looting and destroying their property, mistreating and killing civilians”, Tieger told the court. He said the prosecution would present 134 witnesses to prove the charges.

Since it was founded by the United Nations in 1993, the ICTY has indicted 161 individuals, mostly Serbs, for crimes committed in last decade Balkan wars and more than fifty have already been sentenced to over 700 years in prison.

Turkey says amendment to free speech law still on its agenda
The Turkish government assured on Tuesday that Turkey plans to amend a law curbing free speech that has been used to prosecute intellectuals including Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk.

Critics have accused the government of delaying the proposed amendment to Article 301 of the penal code, which makes denigrating Turkish identity or insulting the country's institutions a crime punishable by up to three years in prison.

Justice Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin insisted, however, that the reform was "still on the table."

He did not say when Parliament would consider the amendment - a key condition for Turkey's progress in membership talks with the European Union.

Liberals’ comments on Obamas’ Race sparks Controversy
Wow. Geraldine Ferraro really stepped on the third rail of “Progressive” Identity -Politics this time. She publicly verbalized that a candidates’ minority status is somehow not a disadvantage. How will the media ever react to a liberal swerving away from the entrenched Democrat script?
Geraldine Ferraro, the Democrats' 1984 vice-presidential nominee and an ardent supporter of Hillary Clinton, has ignited the latest campaign firestorm by saying Barack Obama has been successful only because he is a black man.
Oh really? Did Ferraro actually imply that Obamas’ success is based solely on his race - as this “journalist” reports? Is Geraldine so cynical that she would insinuate that any black man (whether it be Barack or Snoop-dog) would be leading the Democratic primary race over her presumptive female heir apparent if not for the color of his skin?
"If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position," Ms Ferraro told the dailybreeze.com political website. She added: "And if he was a woman (of any color) he would not be in this position. He happens to be very lucky to be who he is. And the country is caught up in the concept."
Hold the bus Gerri…Don’t you know that Liberals can’t say things like that? At least not in those stark matter-of-fact terms anyway. You need to keep to the script. Stick to the metaphorical talking-points and don’t forget to use the code-words dammit! You know the drill. Just keep saying phrases like…“These are exciting times when we have a choice between a woman and an African-American to be President.” And you will be fine.
The Obama campaign called the remarks "outrageous and offensive." They emerged on the day of the Mississippi primary, where Mr Obama is heavily favoured because the majority of the state's Democratic voters are African American.
As you can see, when the narrative is framed correctly it’s completely acceptable for the Liberal media to report that Obama has a clear advantage. The trick is to very subtlety hint that people will vote for a candidate simply based on his race. But make damn sure the emphasis is based on the racial make up of the states’ electorate. It’s all about demographics bayybee. It’s really that simple.
Susan Rice, Mr Obama's foreign policy adviser, said: "I think if Senator Clinton is serious about putting an end to statements that have racial implications...then she ought to repudiate this comment." Last week another foreign policy adviser to Mr Obama, Samantha Power, was forced to quit his campaign after calling Mrs Clinton a "monster". Aides to the Illinois senator said Ms Ferraro's comments were "far worse".

Howard Wolfson, a Clinton spokesman, said of Ms Ferraro: "We disagree with her." Ms Ferraro was chosen by Walter Mondale as his running mate in 1984, the only women to represent a major US political party on a presidential ticket. They lost in a landslide to Ronald Reagan and George Bush Senior.
Of course the Clintons publicly say they “disagree” with Ferraros’ comments. Privately, well that’s another matter. Until this young persuasive upstart caught fire they had the “Black Vote’ all but sewn up.
Meanwhile, Mr Obama for the first time directly accused the Clinton campaign of leaking last month a photograph of him wearing traditional Somali dress – including a turban – that he donned during a 2006 visit to the country. He had previously downplayed the controversy and in a debate said he took Mrs Clinton at her word that as far as she knew the photographs were not leaked by her campaign. He told a rally in Mississippi: "When your campaign starts leaking photographs of me when I'm travelling overseas to make people afraid, that's not real change."
From now on Gerri, you might want to keep your comments about how the Republicans are a bunch of “Old white guys”. That sort of racial politics is not only applauded it’s great fundraising material. Just ask Howard Dean.

Sinbad critique's Hillary's foreign policy credentials
Kathryn Lopez at National Review headlined this item:
The Democratic Primary Has Officially Jumped the Shark

Sinbad, along with singer Sheryl Crow, was on that 1996 trip to Bosnia that Clinton has described as a harrowing international experience that makes her tested and ready to answer a 3 a.m. phone call at the White House on day one, a claim for which she's taking much grief on the campaign trail.

Harrowing? Not that Sinbad recalls. He just remembers it being a USO tour to buck up the troops amid a much worse situation than he had imagined between the Bosnians and Serbs. In an interview with the Sleuth Monday, he said the "scariest" part of the trip was wondering where he'd eat next. "I think the only 'red-phone' moment was: 'Do we eat here or at the next place.'"

Clinton, during a late December campaign appearance in Iowa, described a hair-raising corkscrew landing in war-torn Bosnia, a trip she took with her then-teenage daughter, Chelsea. "They said there might be sniper fire," Clinton said.

Threat of bullets? Sinbad doesn't remember that, either.

"What kind of president would say, 'Hey, man, I can't go 'cause I might get shot so I'm going to send my wife...oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you.'"
"I never felt that I was in a dangerous position. I never felt being in a sense of peril, or 'Oh, God, I hope I'm going to be OK when I get out of this helicopter or when I get out of his tank.'"

In her Iowa stump speech, Clinton also said, "We used to say in the White House that if a place is too dangerous, too small or too poor, send the First Lady."

Say what? As Sinbad put it: "What kind of president would say, 'Hey, man, I can't go 'cause I might get shot so I'm going to send my wife...oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you.'" . . .

#4  "What kind of president would say, 'Hey, man, I can't go 'cause I might get shot so I'm going to send my wife...oh, and take a guitar player and a comedian with you.'" . . .

Oh, that's easy. William Jefferson Clinton.

#5  Clinton, during a late December campaign appearance in Iowa, described a hair-raising corkscrew landing in war-torn Bosnia, a trip she took with her then-teenage daughter, Chelsea. "They said there might be sniper fire," Clinton said.

There also might be a bullshit storm. If the place was so dangerous, why did she take her only daughter with her. Seems to indicate bad judgment on her part.

#6  She should go visit troops on the front lines like the secretary of the Navy does. Then I might take her seriously.

Maybe...

#7  "They said there might be sniper fire," Clinton said.

She's obviously confusing the trip to Bosnia with some Secret Service alternate route she took though parts of DC.

#10  Saw Sinbad on one of his USO tours. He's an ex-boomer:

Sinbad served in the US Air Force as a Boom Operator aboard KC-135 Stratotankers. He was almost dismissed with a dishonorable discharge for various misbehavior including going AWOL.[5]

“ I didn't make the Air Force basketball team and went into denial. So, I kept going AWOL. My mother kept begging me to go back. I told her, 'No, I'm not going back. I'll just grow a beard. They won't recognize me. I'll just be another Black man with a beard.' I was going to Georgia Tech to learn about computers. I'd go AWOL all the time. I'd just leave. I'd come back, hoping they'd throw me out.”

After a series of incidents, he was eventually ejected "for parking my car in the wrong position."

Obama, Clinton Turn Focus to Pennsylvania as Mississippi Votes
Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton kept up their sparring while campaigning today in Pennsylvania even as voters in Mississippi headed to the polls for a primary there.

Obama made a final appeal to Mississippi voters this morning, talking about energy, education and the economy in Greenville, before heading north. Obama, who's vying to become the first black U.S. president, is heavily favored in the state, where more than half of the Democratic electorate is black.

Clinton renewed her line of attack on the Illinois senator's experience and record, telling a crowd of several thousand people in Harrisburg, ``There's a big difference between talk and action.''

The former first lady ``will say and do anything to win this election,'' Obama spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement sent to reporters ahead of her speech.

Both campaigns are turning their attention to Pennsylvania, which has 158 pledged delegates available in its primary on April 22, compared with 33 at stake today in Mississippi. Clinton, a senator from New York, trails Obama in the race for Democratic convention delegates who will select the party's nominee. She has set Pennsylvania as a key test of her campaign.

India-Pakistan
Ex-deputy IAEA chief rips "catastrophic" US-Indian nuclear deal
Former deputy director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Pierre Goldschmidt lambasted the "catastrophic" nuclear cooperation accord between the US and India.
Pierre's bio is here. You'll not be surprised one moment that he's now at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He is willing to call Iran on its activities, but of course force must never be used, and suspending Iran's program is a 'goal', not a requirement. So you can rather imagine his world view.
Speaking at a round-table discussion on Iran's nuclear row in Berlin on Tuesday evening, Goldschmidt said, "The US-India deal is an absolute catastrophe. It is negating and jeopardizing NPT." "It will have terrible consequences if it gets through. What's so special about India?," he added.
It's not one-stop shopping, which purists (who never have to be responsible for their decisions) demand. But it does get India into the IAEA better, and it provides strong incentives for India to cooperate. Let's be clear: India has a powerful enemy to the north and a crazy enemy to the west. It is simply not, not going to join NPT.
Goldschmidt who was the deputy IAEA head from 1999 to 2005, pointed out that the US-Indian atomic cooperation was "going beyond" what other non-nuclear weapons states were receiving.

Under the terms of the nuclear pact, India would get access to US civil nuclear technology and fuel, in return for opening its civilian nuclear facilities to inspection. But its atomic weapons sites would still remain off-limits.

The deal has yet to be approved by the IAEA and the 45-nation Nuclear Suppliers Group, which regulates global civilian atomic trade.

The civilian nuclear energy deal between the two countries has been delayed as a result of stiff opposition from India's communist parties.
And, as we're beginning to see, from inside the IAEA as well.
The parties provide key support to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's minority government. They fear that the US would misuse the nuclear deal as a pretext to exert undue pressure over India's foreign and nuclear policy.

Party wants me to be PM, says Asif Zardari
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari said on Tuesday that members of his party wanted him to become prime minister although it was not his “destination”, according to an Aaj TV report. He was addressing a press conference in Islamabad.

Previously, PPP vice chairmen Makhdoom Amin Fahim and Yousaf Raza Gillani, PPP Punjab President Shah Mahmood Qureshi, and PPP leader Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar were being considered the frontrunners for the office of prime minister. Zardari did not contest the February 18 elections.

Southeast Asia
Opposition parties vow to end race-based policy in 5 Malaysian states
Malaysia's opposition-governed states will no longer follow an affirmative-action program that benefits ethnic Malays, top leaders said Tuesday in a major reversal of policy after an election upheaval clipped the governing coalition's powers. A three-party opposition alliance won control of the governments in 5 of Malaysia's 13 states in elections Saturday, the biggest loss for the governing National Front since independence from Britain in 1957.

The result in part reflected anger among the country's sizable ethnic Chinese and Indian minorities over social and racial inequalities.

The clearest policy reversals were announced by Lim Guan Eng, who was sworn in Tuesday as the chief minister of the northern state of Penang, which is dominated by ethnic Chinese. The industrial state is the site of many multinational electronics companies such as Intel and Dell, and is also known as the country's tourism jewel.

Lim said his government will do away with the New Economic Policy, the 37-year-old affirmative-action program for Malays, in awarding state contracts. "We will run the government administration free from the New Economic Policy that breeds cronyism, corruption and systemic inefficiency," Lim, an ethnic Chinese, told reporters.

In other reforms, Lim said all state government members and civil servants will be required to publicly declare their assets. "This is a government that is based on democracy. This is also a government that believes in equal opportunity and social economic justice. We are here to build a dynamic Penang for all," he said.

Following the elections, Lim's Democratic Action Party, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party and the People's Justice Party of Anwar Ibrahim, the former deputy prime minister, formed coalition governments in the states of Penang, Kedah, Perak and Selangor.

The Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party will rule by itself in Kelantan State, which it has held for the past 18 years. It was the first time the National Front had given up control of so many states.

At the federal level, the opposition increased its strength in Parliament to 82 from 19, leaving the National Front with a simple majority of 140 seats in the 222-member house.
