Africa Subsaharan
Chuck Taylor lawyer in pledge to Bob Mugabe
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] One of the lawyers representing former Liberian President Charles Chuck Taylor at the international Criminal Court (ICC) has offered to represent Zimbabwe President Bob Muggsy Mugabe if the long time dictator is dragged to the The Hague.

The United States-based Genocide Watch recently described massacres in the south western parts of Zimbabwe between 1982 and 1987 as genocide. President Mugabe who deployed a North Korean trained army unit to fight bandidos that were linked to the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo's PF Zapu has in the past described the killings as a moment of madness but has refused to apologise.
"So I went a little nutz. What's the big deal? We got lotsa people."
Human rights groups also want the veteran ruler and his cronies to be punished for the electoral violence that has claimed hundreds of lives since 2000.

But Jamaican born British lawyer Mr Courtney Griffiths who is defending Mr Taylor for alleged crimes against humanity committed during the conflict in Sierra Leone says he is ready to defend Mr Mugabe if approached. "I would definitely like to represent Mugabe -- from a defence point of view he would be an interesting challenge," Mr Griffiths told the British media.

"In the eyes of the world, he is a complete power crazed ogre, I would like to present another side to him." Analysts have in the past speculated that Mr Mugabe's reluctance to step down stems from the fear that he will be prosecuted once he leaves office.

#2  Mugabe was the darling of Britain and the United States back in the 60's. We seem to have a knack for backing losers like Joe Stalin, Mugabe, Diem, Karzai, the string of suffering Palestinian fools, and more recently Jacob Zuma. For the life of me, I can't understand it.

Arabia
Man marries four women to prove ex-wife wrong
A Saudi man married four women at the same time just to prove his ex-wife was wrong when she told him no other woman would marry him.

The Saudi woman had thought her 23-year-old ex-husband was bluffing when he told her he would marry four women at the same night to show she was mistaken, the Arabic language daily Alwatan reported on Wednesday.

“He fulfilled his promise and married four women at the same time and in one night just to vex his ex-wife,” the paper said.

It quoted the unidentified man from the southwestern province of Asir as saying he divorced his first wife because their marriage was a total failure.

“After I divorced her a few months later, she defied me and said that I will not be able to marry again as no other woman will accept me,” he said. “I replied by swearing to her that I will marry four at the same time and in one night.”

Alwatan said the man paid his four new wives around SR80,000 (Dh78,000) as dowry (money paid by bridegrooms to their brides under Islamic law).

The man also paid SR10,000 (Dh9,900) in expenses for his honey moon, the paper added, without making clear if the honey moon involved all the four.

Under Islamic law, Muslim men can have four wives at the same time and such an edict has given rise to polygamy in the oil-rich Gulf.

Europe
Union Leaders Call For Coordinated Socialist Strike Across All Of Europe
The European Trade Union Confederation is planning what could be the largest rally in a decade, in Brussels and against austerity measures.. They are also calling for general strikes and rallies across all of Europe.

Similar marches are scheduled in Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia and Serbia, with labour leaders across the board clamouring for growth and protesting the injustice of workers paying for the errors of the financial sector.

Sherry questions UN agencies' performance in flood zone
[Pak Daily Times] Former information minister Sherry Rehman on Tuesday questioned the performance of UN agencies working in the flood-hit areas.

"Since a major chunk of the donors' money is being channeled through UN agencies so there should be a mechanism to ensure the transparency," she said. While speaking on a point of order in the National Assembly, Sherry said Pakistain was already under heavy external debts, yet options for more loans were being considered for the reconstruction and rehabilitation phase. "If the government opted for more debts from the International Financial Institutions (IFIs) then the nation would be under debt of Rs 35,000 per capita," she added.

Seven more polio cases detected in KP, Khyber
[Pak Daily Times] Seven more polio cases have been detected in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, formerly NWFP, aka Terrorism Central province and Khyber Agency of the tribal belt, officials said.

Health officials told Daily Times on Tuesday that five new polio cases had been detected in Khyber Agency and two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Dr Mohammad Shafiq Afridi, field supervisor medical officer (FSMO), said that after detection of five new cases in Khyber Agency, the number of polio cases reached at 16 in the agency during the current year. About the new cases, he said two were detected in Malwat Akakhel and one each in Shalobar, Teera, and Speen Qabar area in Bara Tehsil. With the new cases, number of polio cases reached at 13 only in Bara, where military operation was underway against beturbanned goons.

He said that the five polio infected children included Rehmatullah (seven months), Usman (27 months), Rafiullah (11 months), Rizwan (18 months) and Mukhtiar (21 months).

The FSMO said that stool samples of the five children were sent to National Institute for Health and all were tested positive for poliovirus.

"About 106,000 children in Bara would remain deprived of polio vaccination during the ongoing four-day campaign started from Monday due to the enduring military operation in the area," the FSMO said.

Jakarta rejects virginity tests
[Straits Times] THE Indonesian government on Tuesday dismissed a lawmaker's proposal to force teenage schoolgirls to undergo virginity tests.

Women's affairs ministry official Wahyu Hartomo said such tests would violate basic human rights and potentially harm the health of young women.

'That kind of test violates human rights and will have serious psychological impacts on students,' he told AFP. 'It is more effective for our generation to receive moral education from their parents at home, especially with the (bad) influence from the Internet.'

Lawmakers in Sumatra island's Jambi province have agreed to drop the idea, which was proposed by local parliamentarian Bambang Bayu Suseno, Ms Hartomo said.

Mr Suseno believes girls should be required to pass virginity tests before they can enter state-funded high schools, citing concerns over pre-marital sex among teenagers in the Muslim-majority country.

'The idea is simple. Parents are obviously afraid of their daughters being deflowered before the time comes, so before they continue their studies they can undergo a virginity test and automatically protect their dignity,' he told The Jakarta Post newspaper. 'Why are girls who lose their virginity allowed to go to public school?'
Because that's not the part of their anatomy they think with?

#1  "Because that's not the part of their anatomy they think with?"

I'd argue that is often a case, regardless of the sex. But it is beside the point. It is their part.
The early teens sexual activity usually points to an abrogation of parental responsibility. But it is not for schools to fix that, let alone discriminate based on it.
