El-Nour Party criticises Brotherhood protests
Egypt's Salafist El-Nour Party has criticised the Muslim Brotherhood's calls for deposed president Mohamed Morsi's reinstatement, saying it would be "impossible" for him to rule amid the fierce opposition he faces.
He would be sort of a lame, lame duck, wouldn't he. The army wouldn't let him really do anything, and people would blame him for all the recurring problems.
"If Morsi is back, how will he lead the country with the sharp opposition he faces from the military, the police, the intelligence, the judiciary and a broad sector of the people?" the party said in a statement released late Friday.

The party criticised the continuous protests against the new interim government, saying they carry a high potential of breaking into violence.

Morsi supporters, led by the Brotherhood, have been staging marches and sit-ins across Cairo and other governorates against what they say was a "military coup" against the country's first democratically-elected head of state. Violence has erupted several times between the former president's supporters and those against him or security forces, leaving scores dead and hundreds injured.

El-Nour Party, who chose a neutral stance in the lead-up of the 30 June protests that ousted Morsi, detailed in its latest statement its view on the current political strife.
Almost makes you wonder if El-Nour has a quiet understanding with the army...
It said that it chose to politically "participate" with the country's new leadership, rather than oppose it, because otherwise Islamist forces would "disappear" from the scene.

It asserted that it should not withdraw in order to keep its views and interests, which are part of the Islamist current, present in the political arena. The party went on further to "completely reject" any "armed confrontation" with the military, saying it would lead to dangerous consequences and affect the country's regional security.

The party also revealed part of its discussions with Morsi and the Brotherhood prior to 3 July.

"When 'Rebel' [the anti-Morsi movement that spearheaded calls for his ouster] was launched and gained support, we warned that the chances that the military steps in are increasing," the statement said, "However, the Brotherhood insisted that this was impossible."

"We called for changing the cabinet, not appointing any more Brotherhood members in the government and reconciling with the [opposing] institutions," it added.

Several institutions clashed with the presidency, cabinet and parliament during Morsi's rule, most notably the judiciary that disputed many of the laws issued and ruled on controversial lawsuits such as the case on the legitimacy of Morsi's appointment of the prosecutor general.

"But the [Brotherhood] denied that they were faced with anger from the masses and believed it was only limited to secular opposition forces."

This, the party says, led to more anger from the people, especially that Morsi's last address did not offer any solutions to the strife, according to the statement.

It said that Morsi and his government, led by ex-PM Hesham Qandil, failed to satisfy people's demands, which led to the current situation.

Egypt partially reopens border with Gaza
Egypt reopened its border crossing with the Gaza Strip on Saturday, an official source told state news agency MENA. The Rafah crossing will be open daily for four hours so as to allow "stranded patients, humanitarian cases, as well as foreigners" to cross the enclave, the source added.

Egyptian authorities have closed the passage several times since former president Mohamed Morsi's removal, citing security concerns due to attacks on security forces in the restive Sinai Peninsula, where the Rafah border crossing is located.

The crossing was opened on a permanent basis in 2011 following the ouster of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, whose administration had opposed Gaza's ruling Hamas and helped Israel enforce its blockade on the enclave.

The passage is the only gateway to the world for 1.7 million Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip.
Other than the umpteen tunnels...
Hamas has asked Egypt's new government to halt its crackdown on the smuggling tunnels linking Gaza to Egypt, which has severely disrupted the flow of guns and ammo goods into the Palestinian territory.

Since Morsi’s ouster on 3 July, hardcore Islamist militants in the Sinai Peninsula have intensified their attacks on security checkpoints amid an acute political and security vacuum left since the 2011 revolution toppling longtime autocrat Mubarak. Numerous security force personnel and civilians have been killed in drive-by shootings and rocket attacks. According to security sources, the army has killed ten jihadi figures since launching its latest operation to crackdown on attacks.

Report: Egypt Bans Fishing Boats In Sinai
[Ynet] Egyptian military forces said that the army is preventing fishing in the vicinity of northern Sinai towns of Rafah, Sheikh Zuweid and El-Arish from last Thursday until further notice. According to the report, the purpose of the decision is to prevent the infiltration of Paleostinians and jihad agents from Gazoo to Egypt by fishing boats.

According to the sources, the success in closing tunnels along the border have caused infiltration attempts by fishing boats Thursday night, and several boats carrying Paleostinian infiltrators have been caught recently by border guard police.

Minister: Egypt Has No Intention Of Waging Syria 'Jihad'
[Ynet] Egypt has no intention of a waging a holy war against Syria, but still supports the Syrian peoples' desire for freedom, new Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy said on Saturday.

The Islamist Moslem Brüderbund movement of ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi last month joined a call by some Sunni holy mans for a jihad against the Syrian government and its Shi'ite allies. Signaling a different approach, the newly installed Fahmy told news hounds: "There are no intentions for jihad in Syria."
Wise. The Egyptian army certainly couldn't do it, and the only result of allowing civilians to go off on their own is that the ones who aren't killed or mutilated come back with interesting new skills and a bad attitude.

Egypt Forms Panel To Amend Constitution
[AnNahar] Egypt's interim president on Saturday appointed a committee of experts to amend the constitution
...again...
...what was wrong with the other three?
They didn't work, obviously.
that was suspended following the military's overthrow of president Mohammed Morsi, the presidency said.

Under a decree issued by the caretaker president, Adly Mansour, the committee, which consists of four university professors and six judges, will begin its work on Sunday.

The committee members will have 30 days to make their amendments, which will then be presented to a 50-person body representing different groups in Egyptian society.

The larger panel will include members of political parties and trade unions, religious officials and army officers, and will in turn have another two months to make final changes to the draft before submitting it to the president.

Mansour will then have 30 days to call a referendum on the charter.

Ousted Islamist president Morsi's government adopted the controversial previous constitution by referendum in December 2012 with a majority of 64 percent, but a voter turnout of just 33 percent.

Opposition politicians and members of Egypt's Coptic Christian community denounced the Islamist-drafted text, which was also criticized by U.N. rights chief Navi Pillay for curtailing certain rights, including those of non-Musselmens.

Egypt's caretaker president issued a charter last Monday outlining the timetable for the constitutional reforms, as well as fresh parliamentary and presidential elections due to be held early next year.

Shortly after it was announced, Morsi's Moslem Brüderbund rejected the temporary charter as a decree enforced by "putschists".
Bless their hearts, they are sooooo cute!

Arabia
Gulf States Hail EU Plans On Israel Settlements
[AnNahar] The six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council welcomed on Saturday EU plans to ban its 28 members from dealing with Jewish settlements, hoping the move would push forward peace efforts.
That's the peace of the grave for the party of the first part, of course.
The guidelines, published in the EU's Official Journal Friday, forbid EU member states from funding or dealing with entities in territories occupied by the Jewish state in 1967.

Officials have warned of a serious crisis between the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and Israel over the move.

The GCC states "welcome the European Union's decision which they hope will back international efforts to revive peace talks between Paleostinians and Israel, and press Israel to end its occupation of Paleostinian territories," said their chief Abdullatif al-Zayani.

Zayani described the decision as "wise and reflects the EU's solid stance in rejecting Israel's settlement policy and its confiscating of Paleostinian territories in a clear violation of all agreements, international law, and U.N. resolutions."

Settlement building in the territories occupied by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War is considered illegal under international law and has been the main point of contention between Israel and the Paleostinians.

On Friday U.S. Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...

China-Japan-Koreas
U.S. Wants to Boost Missile Defense Against N.Korea
The U.S. wants to strengthen its ground-based interceptor missiles system to counter any intercontinental ballistic missiles North Korea may develop. Washington has announced its plans to build up the GBI system by 2017 and is now thinking of bringing in additional reinforcements.

Pentagon official James Miller said in a seminar hosted by the National Defense Industrial Association in Washington on Wednesday that the U.S. is considering expanding its GBI missiles to over 44 due to the growing threat from North Korea. Currently, the U.S. has 30 -- 26 in Fort Greely, Alaska, and four at the Vandenberg Air Force base in California.

U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel in March said his aim is to increase the number of GBIs to 44 by 2017. Miller on Wednesday said this is still being debated and added that the U.S.' missile defense system needs to be maintained at a superior level to the North Korea's ICBMs.

The same day, Missile Defense Agency director James Syring told members of the Senate Appropriations Committee that his agency views North Korea as the largest missile threat to the U.S.
It's purely a coincidence but boosting the number of interceptors would also tend to degrade any confidence the Chinese might have that they could carry out a first strike against us. Given the tension in the region I'm sure that's a comforting thought in Beijing. We'll pro'ly hear about this at some point in the NYT and it will be cast in as negative light as possible...

The Grand Turk
Turkish Police Crash Taksim Wedding Party
[AnNahar] Nuray and Ozgur fell in love behind the barricades of last month's mass anti-government protests in Istanbul, and their wedding ceremony would have been incomplete without the Turkish police.

So when the couple picked the epicenter of the revolt on Taksim Square as the venue to tie the knot Saturday, the anti-riot police obliged and provided the water cannon.

Baton-wielding police broke up a crowd of around a thousand fellow activists who had turned up for the wedding of Nuray Cokol, a 32-year-old nurse, and Ozgur Kaya, a 34-year-old electrician, in Gezi Park.

The wedding guests, veterans of the protests that started on May 31 and rattled Turkey's government, had turned up to celebrate what the Turkish press has called "the love story of the uprising".

"Long live the resistance, long live love," shouted the protesters-cum-wedding guests before police backed by water cannon dispersed them.

Five people died during the three weeks of protests that saw an estimated 2.5 million people take to the streets in 80 different cities to demand Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's resignation.

What began as a protest against plans to redevelop Gezi Park, which is adjacent to Istanbul's Taksim Square, soon evolved into an unprecedented nationwide movement against Turkey's Islamist-rooted government.

The authorities had closed the park to the public after police forced protesters out on June 15. It was reopened 10 days ago but demonstrations remain banned.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Jordanian Islamists May Pay Price For Egyptian Failure
[Jpost] Outwardly, the Jordanian section of the Moslem Brüderbund is exuding confidence, despite suggestions that Morsi ouster weakens their position.

AMMAN, Jordan -- Jordanian Islamists remain defiant at suggestions that their position has weakened in the aftermath of the ousting in Egypt of President Mohamed Morsi, leader of the Moslem Brüderbund (MB), and the arrests by the military of top Brotherhood officials.

Outwardly, the Jordanian section of the Moslem Brüderbund is exuding confidence, its leaders brushing aside what happened to their Egyptian allies as irrelevant.

"Our experience is different from that of Egypt's branch of the Moslem Brüderbund. We did not rule and we existed in the political sphere long before Morsi was president," Hammam Said, leader of the Jordanian MB said. He insisted that his group would not be shaken by the Egypt's leadership earthquake.

In an interview with the Jordanian daily newspaper Al-Ghad, he expressed confidence that Morsi would be returned to power.

Since the Egyptian army's announcement of Morsi's removal from office, large groups of Jordanian Islamist activists have been gathering daily in front of the Egyptian Embassy in Amman, demanding Morsi's reinstatement as leader of the largest and most influential Arab country.

The support here for the local Moslem Brüderbund's Egyptian allies is seen not only as another indication of the strong ties between Jordanian and Egyptian members, but also as a demonstration of the Brotherhood's power to Jordanian officials, who cheered and applauded Morsi's removal from office.

The Brotherhood's deputy head in Jordan, Zaki Bani Rsheid, spoke to hundreds of protesters last month, alleging an international conspiracy against Islamist groups.

"Today, we see evidence of this. The army did not only overthrow Morsi, but also destroyed all the achievements of the revolution of January 25," he said referring to the demonstrations that removed Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
from power, assuring the crowds that the Islamists will ultimately prevail.

Moslem Brüderbund activists said their group remains stronger than ever despite the anti-Morsi demonstrations.

"The popularity of Islamist groups skyrocketed. People realized that international powers are conspiring against Islamic movements. It started with Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,, after its victory in the 2006 election and it continues now in Egypt,"
Abdel Fatah Absi, a youth leader at the Islamic Action Front
...Jordan's branch of the Moslem Brüderbund...
(IAF), a political arm of the Moslem Brüderbund told The Media Line.

Absi also believes that there were different circumstances that affected the two groups. "The Islamic Movement in Jordan has been deeply rooted in the streets and political life," he said.

Jordanian authorities, however, are happy about the toppling of Morsi and see the changes as a blow to the Islamists, the strongest opposition group in the kingdom.

King Abdullah II this year clarified his stance regarding the Moslem Brüderbund, calling them "wolves in sheeps' clothing" in an interview with the American magazine The Atlantic.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh was among the first to congratulate the rebels who ousted Morsi and said his country "respects the decision of the Egyptian people."

The foreign minister's position matched those of Gulf monarchies including Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait. The oil-rich states sent billions of dollars to Egypt as a token of support following the army's move against Morsi.

A bigwig in the Jordanian Prime Minister's office said his government has been acting with caution concerning the events in Egypt.

"The government prefers to act in a responsible manner concerning the election of Morsi and what happened after he was toppled," the source told The Media Line.

"We have our own internal problems and do not need complications," he added.

While Jordan's government officials have been prudent in their reaction to the Morsi ouster, its state-run media have been more vocal in their support of Morsi's overthrow.

The government-owned daily Al-Rai, with the largest circulation in Jordan, has been running daily editorials and opinion pieces vilifying the Islamist movement and its political moves, apparently seeking to capitalize on the Moslem Brüderbund's failure in Egypt in order to denigrate the local chapter.

The campaign is being supported by East Bank right-wing groups and generals from army intelligence who oppose the empowerment of Islamists and Paleostinians in Jordan's political affairs.

The Islamist movement in Jordan is made up largely of Paleostinians, who constitute more than 65 percent of the population.

Former government front man Sameeh Mayta, who was a Moslem Brüderbund member, said the Islamists' failure in Egypt will have consequences for their Jordanian colleagues. "They will have to lower the level of their demands concerning reforms and amending laws," he told The Media Line.

Political analyst Abdellah Samaeen said he was unimpressed with Islamist groups in general. He said that their collective experiences in ruling throughout the region had only resulted in failure.

"The political involvement of Islamist groups failed in the Sudan, Gazoo, Egypt, Libya, and Tunisia -- and it will fail in Jordan," he predicted to The Media Line. "Any group that believes wearing the niqab, an Islamic face-covering for women, is more important than the economy, will fail."

Israel to Free Palestinians as 'Gesture' for Talks
[AnNahar] Israel announced on Saturday it will release some Paleostinian prisoners as a "gesture", after the two sides agreed to lay the groundwork to resume peace negotiations frozen for three years.

Some of those to be released had been held in prisons for decades, Israeli Intelligence Minister Yuval Steinitz said.

His announcement came hours after U.S. Secretary of State John F. I was in Vietnam, you know Kerry
Former Senator-for-Life from Massachussetts, self-defined war hero, speaker of French, owner of a lucky hat, conqueror of Cambodia, and current Secretary of State...
said Israeli and Paleostinian negotiators had agreed to meet to pave the way for a resumption of direct peace talks.
No doubt The Second Smartest Man In The Room is proud of his accomplishment.
The last round of direct talks broke down in 2010 over the issue of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.

Steinitz said his government would engage in the staggered release of a "limited number" of prisoners, some of whom he defined as "heavyweights", who have been in jail for up to 30 years.

"There will definitely be a certain gesture here", he said without noting how many prisoners were to be freed.

According to Israeli rights group B'Tselem, at least 4,713 Paleostinians are imprisoned in the Jewish state.

Their release is one of the Paleostinians' key demands for resuming peace talks, particularly the 107 prisoners placed in durance vile
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
prior to 1993, when the Oslo peace accords were signed.

An Israeli official said no prisoners would be released before direct talks begin and the process would then be dependent on the Paleostinians proving they are "really serious and not playing games".

"It won't happen tomorrow and not next week," the official told Agence La Belle France Presse, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
. He could give no indication of the number of prisoners involved.

He said the releases, once they begin, would take place in stages and include "pre-Oslo prisoners, prisoners set to be released anyway, and those the Paleostinians 'forgot' during the Oslo accords".

Steinitz said Israel would not compromise "diplomatic issues", and that there was no agreement on a settlement construction freeze or on accepting the borders that existed prior to 1967 Six-Day war as the basis for talks, as the Paleostinians demand.

He said for their part the Paleostinians had committed to "negotiate seriously" for "at least nine months," during which they would refrain from action at the United Nation and other international institutions.

Kerry gave away very little detail of the agreement, which came after four days of consultations with Israeli and Paleostinian leaders.

Just minutes before boarding a plane to fly home from Jordan, Kerry said both sides had reached "an agreement that establishes a basis for resuming direct final status negotiations".

"This is a significant and welcome step forward," he added, having doggedly pushed the two sides to agree to resume talks in six intense trips to the region since becoming secretary of state in February.

A State Department official said Kerry had wrenched a commitment from both sides "on the core elements that will allow direct talks to begin".

The Israelis and Paleostinians remain far apart on final status issues including the borders of a future Paleostinian state, the right of return of Paleostinian refugees, and the fate of Jerusalem which both want as their capital.

Paleostinian president the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas
... a graduate of the prestigious unaccredited Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow with a doctorate in Holocaust Denial...
has also repeatedly called for a freeze to Israeli settlement building and a prisoner release.

According to a Paleostinian official, "The ball is now in Israel's court. Kerry has proposed the bases for a resumption of negotiations and asked (Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu to respond favorably to one of them."

"The bases are the release of Paleostinians jugged
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
before the Oslo accords, minors, the sick or the elderly," he said on condition of anonymity. "And that Israel recognize the 1967 (border) lines as a reference point, or a halt to settlement building."

The official said Netanyahu had agreed to hold a special cabinet session to draw up Israel's response to Kerry's proposals.

"If Israel accepts them, negotiations will resume."

The Islamist Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, movement which runs the Gazoo Strip rejected a return to talks, saying Abbas had no legitimate right to negotiate on behalf of the Paleostinian people.

And the leftist Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine
... Paleostinian Marxist movement, founded in 1967. It is considered a terrorist organization by more than 30 countries including the U.S., European Union, Australia, Canada, and Antarctica. The PFLP's stated goal is the establishment of a socialist State in Paleostine. They pioneered armed aircraft hijackings in the late 60s and early 70s...
warned that "a return to talks outside the framework of the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
and its resolutions would be political suicide".

Gaza Man Charged With Planning Terror Attacks
[Ynet] Indictment filed against Wael Abu Rida for security offenses he committed as commander of terrorist cells in Fatah, Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the assassination of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
and Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, military wings
Whatever else might be said about the gentleman, clearly he was not afraid of hard work.
An indictment was filed on Friday against Waal Abu Rida, a 34-year-old Paleostinian from Gazoo, for security offenses, including attempted murder.

The Bani Suheila resident was locked away
Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!
by security forces last month and a gag order on the arrest was lifted last week.

According to the charges, Abu Ridah served as a commander in the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and then moved to the Islamic Jihad and later to a Hamas shadow group.

He has been engaged in extensive anti-Israel activity since 2003. As part of his activities in the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, he fired at IDF tanks with the aim of killing soldiers. He also laid explosives on the Gazoo border fence and took part in military training of 40 operatives near the Khan Younis hospital in 2005.

He trained them to assemble bombs, engage in sniper fire, plan the abduction of soldiers, as well as fighting the IDF.

Abu Rida is accused of planning to carry out attacks against IDF soldiers with the intention of killing them. Along with others, he tried to plant explosives against military patrols, and was involved in a shooting incident in which one of the forces of Evil fired at IDF forces. Abu Rida filmed the attempted attack. One of the soldiers fell to the ground from the shooting, but was not injured.

In 2006, Abu Rida used a 14-year-old boy as a human shield: According to the indictment, he planned to carry out a shooting attack or plant explosives in an orchard, thus he carried a cargo of 10 kg into the area. The defendant noticed a boy and asked him to accompany him, in order not to not arouse suspicion. He hid the explosives and later blew them up, but no one was injured.

Additionally, Abu Rida is accused of conspiracy to excavate a tunnel from the Gazoo Strip into Israel, for the purpose of carrying out an attack; he was also involved in an attempt to launch a rocket into Israel.

In 2008, Abu Rida was appointed commander of the Islamic Jihad's al-Quds Brigades. During Operation Cast Lead, four of the organization's cells were put under his command, and their members were given instructions for laying explosives against IDF soldiers.

2011: Moves over to Hamas
In 2011, he was approached by a senior member of a Hamas shadow group, and was asked to join the organization. Abu Rida agreed on condition that he could establish a squad which would serve under his command. The organization's leaders gave their approval, and Abu Rida and his squad members performed armed guard duty against IDF soldiers.

That same year, Abu Rida also received a 200 kg barrel of TNT and was asked to place it in an area where IDF tanks passed, but in the end, the IDF forces did not cross that point. He was also charged of attempting and failing to launch rockets against Israel.

Abu Rida's attorney, Mohammed Jabarin, said that the statement provided by his client throughout the investigation was false. "He was active in the Islamic Jihad, but gave a false version, and there's a reason for this. Ninety-nine percent of the indictment is inflated," Jabarin said.

The state has withheld details of the indictment, even as Ynet has applied to allow publication of the circumstances under which Abu Rida arrived in Israel.

A decision in the case was supposed to be made on Friday at the Beersheba Magistrate's Court, but the prosecution filed its indictment early, and the court decided not to rule on the request for permission to publish. The prosecution had argued that the case's details could harm national security, even though the details have all already been published in the foreign media.

Iranian State TV IRIB reported on March that Iran has successfully test-fired "Naziat-10" and "Fajr-5" missiles.
