Sudan closes Iranian cultural centres and expels diplomats
[Al Ahram] The Khartoum government has closed all Iranian cultural centres in Sudan and expelled the cultural attaché and other diplomats, fearing they had become a threat to society, the foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

The expulsions were linked to government concerns that Iranian officials were promoting their Shi'ite brand of Islam in the largely Sunni country.

The Iranian Cultural Centre and its branches had exceeded their mandates and "become a threat to intellectual and social security," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

Egypt: Convoy Attack Tuesday Result Of Explosive Device Inside Terror Tunnel
[Ynet] An Egyptian official security source said Wednesday that the attack that killed 11 Egyptian soldiers in Egyptian Rafah area was conducted using an bomb planted in a tunnel that was dug beneath a main traffic artery in the city.
Geez -- it's not enough that they turn Gaza into a Swiss cheese of tunnels, but now they're digging up the Sinai, too.
In addition, a gunnies rubbed out an Egyptian off-duty policeman on Wednesday in the restive north of the Sinai Peninsula, a security official said.

The official said the 32-year-old first sergeant was walking home after work when gunnies opened fire, killing him on the spot in el-Arish, the thriving provincial capital.
A further point:
Over a dozen coppers have been shot in the same neighborhood, home to many coppers, since last summer.

Morocco, Spain combat terror threat
[MAGHAREBIA] The Moroccan and Spanish interior ministers met last week in Tetouan as part of stepped up co-operation in the fight against violent bad boys.

At the end of the August 27th meeting, they issued a joint statement mentioning their "commitment to constantly improving mechanisms for the sharing of information between intelligence services, including in the area of tackling networks that recruit fighters for terrorist groups".

They also praised the collaboration for producing "convincing results...as demonstrated by the operations to dismantle networks operating in both countries".

Africa Subsaharan
Nigeria, Allies Call for Help to Stop Boko Haram Funding, Arming
[An Nahar] Nigeria and its regional allies on Wednesday called for greater international support to shut down Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
's weapons and funding supply as concern mounted at the group's rapid recent land grab.

The call came after conflicting reports that the bully boyz had seized another town, prompting warnings that Nigeria was losing control of the northeast and violence could spill across borders.

Nigeria's Foreign Minister Aminu Wali said his counterparts from Benin, Chad, Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
and Niger recognized the need for a more joined-up approach to curb arms trafficking and spiraling violence during a day of talks on the security crisis.

"(The meeting) called for greater co-operation of the international community to assist in tracking these sources with a view to putting an end to these practices and all forms of illegal transfer of arms and ammunition," he told news hounds in Abuja.

Boko Haram grew out of a largely peaceful anti-corruption movement led by Islamic preacher Mohammed Yusuf in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, turning violent only after his death in police custody in 2009.

But progressively more bloody attacks, including al-Qaeda-style car and suicide kabooms, have led to discussion about the exact nature and extent of their links to the global jihadi network.

The United Nations
...aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society...
earlier this year designated Boko Haram an al-Qaeda-linked group in a move designed to shut down any overseas funding and support.

Analysts believe the sanctions are largely symbolic, with little or no proven operational links with overseas hard boys, despite Boko Haram's leader Abubakar Shekau praising jihadi leaders.

The group's operations have also largely been confined to Nigeria's northeast, where it is thought to have financed its operations mainly through bank robberies, kidnapping and extortion.

Nigeria's soldiers deployed in the region have complained that the bully boyz are better armed, with high-powered assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenades and even armored personnel carriers.

Some arms supplies are thought to come in via smuggling routes from Libya through Sahel countries, but Boko Haram has also regularly seized weapons and hardware from the Nigerian military.

Nigeria's neighbors vowed to play a greater role in tackling the Islamists after the abduction of more than 200 girls from their school in northeast Nigeria in April, which caused global outrage.

International intelligence and surveillance specialists and equipment were sent to Abuja to help trace the missing teenagers, 219 of whom are still being held captive.

But nearly five months on, Western diplomats have indicated that there has been little progress, despite a claim from Nigeria's military that they had located the girls.

Nigeria has repeatedly played up what it says is the regional aspect of the insurgency, blaming imported muscle and overseas funding for the violence.

But while some foreign mercenaries may be in the guerrilla ranks and there have been attacks beyond Nigeria's borders, some analysts say the conflict remains largely "local".

Any wider military response could internationalize the conflict, they have warned.

Boko Haram has in recent weeks taken and held swathes of territory in northeast Nigeria in a departure from their previous hit-and-run tactics.

On Monday, the bully boyz reportedly took over the town of Bama, 70 kilometers (45 miles) from the Borno state capital, Maiduguri, sending hundreds of soldiers fleeing.

The military disputes the claims, but the fighting has raised fears that Boko Haram has the city in its sights and aims to make it the center of a separate, hardline Islamic state.

"We live in fear of a possible Boko Haram attack on Maiduguri because of the speed with which they are taking over towns and villages," said resident Babagana Kolo.

The Nigeria Security Network of analysts said Nigeria's northeast was "on the brink" of coming under Boko Haram control, which could see parts of Cameroon being overrun and spark a humanitarian crisis.

Meanwhile,
...back at the revival hall, the SWAT team had finally arrived...
residents, a police officer in the Cameroon town of Amchide and a Nigerian politician said the bully boyz took control of the town of Banki in Borno state on Tuesday.

"From the information that I have received from the people in Banki and Amchide, Boko Haram has taken over Banki," Borno senator Ahmed Zannah told BBC radio's Hausa language service.

"More than 200 Nigerian soldiers fled to Amchide from Banki when Boko Haram headed towards the town."

Arabia
Why Are Arab Armies So Generally Worthless?
As an American soldier, I found that one of the best and most satisfying things about the first Gulf War, the liberation of Kuwait, was that we'd never again have to listen to how great the Israelis were. We'd seen the Arabs, met them, and went through them like a hot knife through butter. What did Tzahal have to teach us? It's a complex set of problems they have, the armies of the Arab world. Here's a true story that will illustrate a lot of that why.

During Bright Star 85, the Egyptian Army, which is one of the better Arab armies, set up some tents for us as Wadi Natrun, northwest of Cairo. The officer in charge of the detail looked at the Americans, looked at the tents (which were, by the way, better than ours), looked at the Americans; He was thinking that an American's signature on a hand receipt would do him no good if one of those very good and very expensive tents grew legs and went to hide in a shipping container.

He put his platoon in formation, held up three fingers, and announced, "I need three guards." Every man reached into his back pocket, pulled out a wallet and began peeling off notes. That is to say, they were offering bribes, baksheesh. The three who came up with the smallest bribes were picked to guard the tents. These three then proceeded to squat by the road, hold hands, and cry like babies. And it was sort of understandable that they cried because for the next four days they got no food or water except what our men gave them out of pity; their officer just didn't care.

That's what you fight when you fight Arab armies, and that's why we went through them like lightning. They're a collection of demoralized bipedal sheep usually led by corrupt and connected human filth. Exceptions? Sure there are exceptions; I've met a few. That's why we call them "exceptional."

The Arabs are what the sociologists like to call "amoral familists." This means that they are nearly or totally incapable of forming bonds of love and loyalty with anyone not a blood relation. Even then, the degree of blood relation determines where loyalty legitimately lies. The saying in the area is: "Me and my brother against my cousin; me, my brother and my cousin against the world." This not only allows a superior to extort baksheesh from non-relations, but identifies him as an idiot "a weak idiot, actually" if he does not.

Add in the Islamic fantasy mindset.

Don't forget "Insh'allah," (Which is like "manana," but without the sense of urgency) which makes it somewhat impious to train really well since it is all the will of God anyway. Insh'allah also provides an excuse for bad behaviour on the battlefield. Add in a set of social values that despise and loathe physical labour.

In an organization that is formed from a clan or tribe, the loyalty of everyone, from the rank and file to the commanding officer, is not to the government. It isn't to the country, which is a pretty weak concept in the Arab world anyway. Family and faith matter there a great deal; countries little or not at all.

Militarily, they've got nothing going for them

While many weakneses of the Araba rrmies will also be in the jihadist armies these will have far better moral.

#6  Corruption.
The armies are mean of social and economic advancement along with protecting whatever political machine runs the country. It is not designed to fight and win a war in the modern Western sense. Its an EEO institution for whosoever clan/tribe is running the place.

#7  Read the article. The author apparently chewed much of the same dirt I did. Bright Star, real fun, broken legs and all (google it). And deployments within the Magic Kingdom prior to and after Desert Shield/Storm.The Saudi National Guard is an exception to the quality issue, although it's clearly a tribal unit, as the author notes.

The only exception to this in the Arab world is the Jordanian Army, which was set up and run strictly by the British army along their lines - with professional officers, and uniquely amongst the Arabs, a professional NCO corps. All volunteer, they are unique in that they require 12 weeks of western style basic training, followed by 2 to 6 months of advanced training, after which they are assigned to their units with the expectation that they still have more to learn. Consequently, the Jordanian Army is fairly small compared to the conscript armies in the region, but in many areas they approach western militaries in terms of standards and capabilities.

#8  The clan based loyalty system and the corruption.

They have nothing to fight for and run like hell at the first opportunity.

There are units that have overcome this, but it is through discipline and training and loyalty to the state/unit.

#9  The jihadis are bound by the same cultural limitations, which is something our intel should be exploiting.

The organization takes the place of the tribe, but don't believe the guys selected to explode are the emir's close relatives.

In the Pak tribal regions (I know they're not Arabs but they're wannabe Arabs) the groups splinter at the drop of a hat and shoot each other up periodically. Abdullah Azzam might be somebody to name brigades after now, but when he was alive Zawahiri had his car boomed and off to paradise he went.

#10  Which is like "manana," but without the sense of urgency

Should actually be "without the sense of relative urgency."

The only other exception I'll add is parts of the Saudi navy. The Sauds crew their east coast ships with sailors from the west coast, and vice versa. They tend to be moderately professional because they have nothing but their ship and each other. There's a decent level of professionalism among the petty and warrant officers, which is good because the naval officers are a mixed lot tending toward disinterested members of the ruling family.

#14  Last great Muslim leader (Saladin) was actually a Kurd.

I don't know if the Arabs can actually claim a great military leader. At first I thought it was because they came from a tribal society that went on small scale raids rather than actual warfare but the American Indians started that way and produced a number of great leaders.

United Arab Emirates Backs World Fight on IS
[An Nahar] The United Arab Emirates voiced readiness Wednesday to back world efforts to confront the threat from jihadists, amid calls by Western powers for an international fight against the Islamic State.

The UAE affirms "its solidarity with regional and international efforts against terrorist threats... and its readiness to take needed measures to confront this phenomenon in line with U.N. Security Council Resolution 2170," its foreign ministry said.

The resolution, passed last month, seeks to cut funds and the flow of imported muscle both to the Islamic State, which has seized swathes of territory in Syria and Iraq, and to al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, al-Nusra Front.

The UAE said it "stands against terrorist threats facing our region and the world, especially with the dangerous human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
violations by terrorist groups in Iraq, Syria and other Arab and Moslem countries such as Yemen, Somalia, Libya, and Afghanistan suffering from... movements such as IS, al-Nusra, and al-Qaeda."

Last month, Washington confirmed reports that UAE warplanes had twice bombed Islamist militias in Libya.

Abu Dhabi "strongly condemns the continuing terrorist and criminal acts by bully boy groups, especially the so-called IS... that undermine regional and international stability," said the statement carried by the official WAM news agency.

U.S. President Barack Obama
I've now been in 57 states -- I think one left to go...
called Wednesday for an international front against jihadists in Iraq and Syria after they beheaded a second American news hound Steven Sotloff.

Britannia and La Belle France meanwhile weighed military action.

The former Senator-for-Life from Delaware, an example of the kind of top-notch Washington intellect to be found in the World's Greatest Deliberative Body...

What would he know? It's not like he's close to Obama dispensing advice. It's not like he was one of the leading lights of the Senate. It's not like he has the world's leaders on speed-dial. When he was nominated as VP in 2008 the fawning media said that he'd provide "balance" and "experience" to the new-comer Obama. Champ knew better -- Biden is, and has been, nothing more than assassination insurance.
"The American people are so much stronger, so much more resolved than any enemy can fully understand," Biden said on Wednesday in the wake of the killing of Steven Sotloff. "As a nation we are united and when people harm Americans we don't retreat, we don't forget."

Altaf Hussain asks MQM lawmakers to resign
[The Nation (Pak)] Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain today gave a week's deadline to assemblies and the Senate to improve conduct while directing his MPs to submit their resignations. He called the joint session of the Parliament a 'drama to befool the nation'.

The MQM chief asked politicians to submit resignations to deputy convener today, adding that MQM would not be a part of this corrupt and rotten system.

Lamenting over lawlessness, he said that there was no constitution and law in the country. "The Parliament can't solve public problems," he declared.

Kohat facing shortage of policemen
[DAWN] KOHAT: The acute shortage of police personnel in the Kohat division, having borders with three tribal agencies and two districts of Punjab, is seriously hampering efforts to maintain law and order situation in the region.
Oh, c'mon. They couldn't have killed them all?
Kohat division DIG Dr Ishtiaq Marwat told Dawn on Tuesday that he had been requesting the government through central police offices that at least 1,000 coppers were required for deployment at sensitive installations like sites of oil and gas companies, cop shoppes and along the boundaries with the tribal belt.

He said that cop shoppes were also understaffed having only five to six coppers, as a result policing in the district was severely affected. "Due to shortage of personnel, patrolling large areas, checking smuggling, conducting raids and dealing with other affairs is becoming acutely difficult," he added.

Dr Marwat said that the government had inducted only 100 coppers on temporary basis in Kohat, Hangu and Karak districts after the sectarian violence during last Muharram, which claimed three lives.

Army says 910 'terrorists', 82 soldiers killed in North Waziristan
[DAWN] A statement issued by the military on Wednesday put the official number of "terrorists" killed in Operation Zarb-e-Azb
..the Pak offensive against Qaeda in Pakistain and the Pak Taliban in North Wazoo. The name refers to the sword of the Prophet (PTUI!)...
at 910 and added that 82 Pak soldiers had also bit the dust during the North Wazoo offensive.

The corpse counts and their breakdowns could not be independently verified as journalists have limited access to the restive tribal region.

Islamabad stand-off: All eyes on negotiations to break deadlock
[DAWN] As the political crisis prevailing in the country continues unabated, the government and opposition parties in the Assembly are making frantic efforts to negotiate with the protesting PTI and PAT.

The previous day saw the PTI politicians march into Parliament, with Shah Mehmood Wormtongue Qureshi making a feverish speech about his party's decision to march. There was, however, no finality on the acceptance of their resignations as the NA speaker maintained his wish to meet with the disgruntled politicians in his chambers.

The MQM, too, added to mounting pressure on the government when party chief Altaf Hussain demanded the resignations of all MQM politicians.

Lawfare: Israel Law Center To Take Hamas To Hague Court For Execution Of 38 Palestinians
[Ynet] The Israel Law Center has filed a criminal suit with the International Criminal Court

#2  Oh I Love this too - somehow though I see the UN coming up with some SLAAP type of legalese that - quelle horreurr - would only be invoked when the plaintiff is Israel - still, will be nice to see the contortions they will have to go through to arrive at the "right" ruling

#3  this case was also chosen because there is video witness filmed by Hamas itself as well as contemporaneous bragging by Hamas post executions (also in video).

#6  Probably shouldn't use the word "execute" in the context of alleged extrajudicial murders. I suggest "liquidate" or "murder".

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Journos Ignore Hamas crimes against other Paleos
[GatestoneInstitute] Armed Hamas militias committed the ugliest crimes. It was the Palestinians who made this charge.

Hamas militiamen confiscated food and medicine sent to the Gaza Strip from the West Bank and some "friendly countries," the Fatah leaders disclosed. "Hamas distributed some of the aid among their men through the mosques or sold it on the black market," they said.

It is hard to believe that the journalists did not hear about the Hamas crimes. But it is still not clear why journalists and human rights advocates continue to ignore the story. Is it because such stories are lacking an anti-Israel angle?
Pshaw! Perish the thought. Journalists are upright, honest fellows who never allow personal feelings to get in the way of a fair sharing of the facts as they are known at the time.
....Sorry. I had to stop and pick up my lips. They just fell off, a very strange sensation.

Islamic State officially outlawed in Israel
Israel officially banned the Islamic State and anyone associating with it, in a declaration signed on Wednesday by Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon, The Jerusalem Post reported.
Not that it was too healthy to belong to the ISIS in Israel before this...
The decree outlawed meetings of any kind between Islamic State members and called it an illegal organization.

At the same time, Ya'alon also signed a similar declaration that outlaws the Abdullah al-Azzam Brigades, a Sunni jihadist group linked to al-Qaida which has in the past claimed responsibility for launching rockets into Israel.

By officially declaring the Islamic State illegal, Israel will now be able to take legal action against anyone raising funds or associating with the terror organization in any way.

"This is being done for the sake of national security, public safety and public order," the declaration states.

The declaration bans the Islamic State's various names in any form and goes on to list several of its Arabic, Hebrew and English titles.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iran Denies Cultural Centers in Sudan Closed
[An Nahar] Iran on Wednesday denied its cultural centers in Sudan have been closed on the orders of Khartoum, saying Sudanese authorities would not want to damage relations.

"The embassy and the cultural and economic centers of Iran and Sudan are continuing with their normal activities in the two countries," said Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, quoted by Fars news agency.

"Sudanese authorities would not allow damage to our historic bilateral relations," he said.

On Tuesday, an official in Khartoum, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, said Sudan has ordered Iran to close its cultural centers and given their managers 72 hours to leave the country.

He said the decision was in response to "increased activity by the cultural centers in spreading Shiite Islam," the majority faith in Iran but not in overwhelmingly Sunni Sudan.

The AFP correspondent in Sudan's capital said the Iranian cultural center with its Sudanese employees was operating as usual on Wednesday.

Khartoum has maintained generally close relations with Tehran, whose warships have made port calls in Port Sudan this year.

Iran is also reportedly a significant arms supplier to Sudan and the two governments both support the Paleostinian Islamist movement Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason,.

Report: Canadians Held Americans Hostage in Syria
[An Nahar] Three Canadians were directly involved in the kidnapping of two American journalists by Islamist Death Eaters in Syria, Canada's public broadcaster reported Wednesday.

Citing unnamed sources, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said the trio -- whose identities are unknown -- forced captives Theo Curtis and Matt Schrier to reveal their computer passwords, then drained their bank accounts and racked up credit card bills.

They also wrote to the two journalists' families pretending to be the men, the CBC said. The Canadian government said it is investigating.

Curtis and Schrier were held in captivity together between 2012 and 2013. Curtis was released by the al-Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra Front last month while Schrier escaped last year.

Ottawa has said as many as 130 Canadians are fighting overseas with krazed killer groups. Some estimates put the figure much higher.

U.N. Calls on Militants to Abandon Its Positions in Golan
[An Nahar] The U.N. Security Council on Wednesday demanded the release of 45 Fijian peacekeepers held in the Golan Heights by Syrian al-Nusra Front rebels.

The 15 members of the council unanimously approved a declaration condemning "in the strongest terms" the detention of the Fijians.

They were captured almost a week ago, when the rebels stormed a Golan Heights crossing.

The council "reiterated their call for the peacekeepers' immediate and unconditional release," adding in its statement that "there can never be any justification for attacks on or the detention of U.N. peacekeepers."

The government of Fiji also has called for their release, stressing that the neutral peacekeepers do not take sides in any conflict.

A team of U.N. negotiators on the ground in Golan is trying to secure the Fijians' freedom.

The Fijians are part of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) established in 1974 to maintain the ceasefire between Syria and Israel forces in the Golan, and oversee the implementation of a disengagement agreement.

The capture of the peacekeepers occurred as Syrian troops and Salafist tough guys battled close to the armistice line with Israel in the Golan Heights.

In addition to calling for their release, the Security Council "demanded that all groups other than UNDOF must abandon all UNDOF positions," and also called on the rebel to return vehicles, weapons, and other equipment confiscated from the peacekeepers.

A group of 75 Philippine peacekeepers were also besieged by the al-Qaeda-linked al-Nusra fighters, but they eventually were able to avoid capture, a development welcomed by the council in its declaration.

"The members of the Security Council welcomed news that all Filipino peacekeepers are now safe and they commended the efforts of UNDOF's Quick Reaction Force," the statement said.

Officials in Fiji said that the al-Nusra rebels have made several demands, including the delivery of humanitarian aid to a small town outside Damascus which is an al-Nusra Front stronghold.

The also are demanding to be removed from a U.N. terror blacklist, officials in the Pacific nation said.
Ummm... "Take us off yer terrorist blacklist or we'll murder these guys?" Maybe it makes sense in Arabic.

#1  Syrian troops and tanks seem to be preparing for a massive assault to clear al-Nusra from the Golan. If they do, will they bring the UN peacekeepers back in, or just stay? Getting back the other 95% of the Golan will be harder, what with all the Israeli settlements there now.

ISIL to be squeezed out of existence: UK PM
[Iran Press TV] ritish Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
has vowed that the ISIL terrorist group will "be squeezed out of existence," as the snuffies threaten to kill a British hostage.

Cameron made the comments in the House of Commons on Wednesday, adding that Britannia "will not be cowed" by threats from ISIL snuffies to kill the British hostage, identified as David Cawthorne Haines.
