Al Sharpton's 60th-birthday party last week, but he hasn't been charged. He is frequently seen squiring around women barely out of their teens, the longtime neighbor said.
"Not the kind of women you'd expect. He uses the penthouse and the limo to [attract] them," said the neighbor outside Rubenstein's East 64th Street building.

Sources said Rubenstein began his sexcapades decades ago -- and "has not changed" a bit since.

Rubenstein is accused of raping a 42-year-old woman -- a top aide to Sharpton -- while she was passed out drunk in his apartment early Thursday. Rubenstein and the woman had both partied earlier at Sharpton's star-studded bash at the Four Seasons restaurant. When I party it's usually family, to include the grandkids, with maybe a cake.

The emergency department at Reading Hospital is still flooded with patients overdosing and getting sick on a bad batch of K2. Hospital officials told 69 News they have seen 25 additional cases related to K2 in the last seven days. That's now 55 total emergency department visits over the last three weeks.

[ATLANTA.CBSLOCAL] While the national media focus on the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and the patient in Dallas, the CDC is reminding Americans that sexually transmitted diseases are an ongoing but hidden epidemic.
In the United States, nearly 20 million cases of new STD infections are reported each year, reports Live Science. Since infections can persist for a long time, and because some victims are not even aware they have a disease and can easily spread it to others.
Based on data from 2008, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the eight most common sexually transmitted diseases are: chlamydia, gonorrhea, hepatitis B virus (HBV), genital herpes, HIV, human papillomavirus (HPV), syphilis and trichomoniasis.
About 50.5 million current infections are in men while 59.5 million are in women, for a total of 110 million Americans with STDs at any given time. That's about a third of the population. As the noted philosopher R. Ricardo once said: "I dun blivit."
Fifty percent of new infections occur in young people from ages 15-24 and gonorrhea is the most commonly reported STD in that age group. Gonorrhea is the second most commonly reported STD in the United States.
The most commonly reported infection is chlamydia. But since many who are infected don't show symptoms, the number could be far higher than the 1.4 million in 2012, a rate of 457 cases per 100,000 people. Right. It could be everybody, you and me included.
New infections with HIV and hepatitis B occur in less than 50,000 people each year.

Better than that. Roughly 22% of the population is under age 18. Roughly 13% is over age 65.
Now let's assume that the STD rate is really low in the very young and the very old. Sure, sure, 18 year olds could get an STD, and Grandpa might be frisky still, but we can discount the rate in these two age groups at least some.
That means, in the 18 to 65 crowd, that the rate has to be higher. 40%? 50%? You're going to sell the idea that 1 in 2 adult Americans has an STD? Really?

Unlike dating STDs, wedding STDs are a good thing! A Save the Date is a precursor to the wedding invitation and notifies guests to mark their calendars. Etiquette suggests ordering STDs as soon as the location and date are secured. The STDs should be sent no later than six months before the wedding.
This is only a written abbreviation – STDs are pronounced Save the Dates when spoken.
Suppose one lops off the 0-14 group and the 65 and over group. Assume, for a moment that these ~ 100M are not at high risk for STDs. If the CDC says 110M have STDs, that is about half the at risk population of the remaining ~ 200M---some 50! One might question the validity of the "at risk" groups assumed. The > 65 population dropping out may not be realistic. Also, one reads of kids starting at ages earlier than 14. I think the CDC numbers are most likely in error.

Are they simply not overlapping? One would thing that multiple infections of STIs might account for many of these reported cases. Chlamydia, herpes, HPV all at the same time are not unheard of especially since they are nearly asymptomatic in many forms, especially when they are in an inactive state like herpes -- the person has the disease but is not projecting symptoms. So there's 3 cases in one person. HIV also tends to have many other diseases along for the ride because it does weaken the immune system.
Hep B is spread via contact with blood or body fluids, and can exist outside the body for up to 7 days on some surfaces. Also, its spread perinatal in mother to child, as well as in vulnerable populations with enforced proximity and poor sanitation (prisons, for example). So Hep B also has far more than just the sexual factors to spread it, including it as an STI may inflate the numbers unjustifiably.

It's as OS said, people might have multiple STDs. However, case definitions can be a little tricky. The following cases are "required" to be reported:
Chlamydia - confirmed cases
Chancroid - confirmed and probable cases
Gonorrhea - confirmed and probable cases
Hepatitis B - confirmed acute cases; both confirmed and probable chronic cases
HIV - confirmed cases and possible perinatal exposures
Syphilis- confirmed and probable cases
The "probable cases" may not transition into confirmed cases. Some STDs are not required to be reported. Some STDs are notifiable. Others reportable. Some are asymptomatic. Some disorders are sexually transmitted like "crabs" but not necessarily considered diseases. Disorders like non-specific urethritis may result from sexual encounters but it may occur for other reasons. Often one person may have multiple STDs. Some of these disorders are lifelong and people tend to move from place to place. They are likely to see a new doctor where they move. It is possible a patient with an existing disease may be reported as a "new case" in more than. This would tend to inflated rates. Like many diseases there are unknowns.
There appears to be a lack of uniformity in reporting requirements from state to state. No reporting system is perfect.
Older people don't necessarily drop out of the "at risk" population: Older.

He said the phasing out of the commando system had created a vacuum which the current national rural plan was not addressing adequately. [The National Interest] Despite numerous violations, the cease-fire in Ukraine's Donbass region is largely holding. For very different reasons, President Petro Poroshenko of Ukraine and President Vladimir Putin of Russia have come to lead the parties of peace in their respective capitals. Economic issues clearly top the agenda in both Ukraine and Russia.
Yet, the cease-fire remains very brittle. The Donetsk airport and the city of Donetsk itself have seen some heavy fighting, with many civilian casualties. The parties of war on both sides of the front line have not given up their ambitious goals. Should the cease-fire be allowed to break down completely, the danger of a big war in Ukraine will immediately reappear.
This scenario must be absolutely barred, as it risks escalation to a full-scale military confrontation between Russia and NATO. However, mere avoidance of war is not good enough. The perilous political dynamics in Eastern Europe need to be reversed.

In large cities -- particularly in chaotic slums -- it is virtually impossible to find those who had contact with patients, no matter how great the effort. That is why I am so worried about Nigeria as well. FRISCO (CSBDFW.COM) - An afternoon news conference has been called in Frisco, a suburb of Dallas, to discuss a possible second case of Ebola.
The patient claims to have had contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, referred to as Dallas ‘patient zero.’
It is not clear how the patient had contact with Duncan or if the patient was one of the about 50 people being monitored by federal, state and local health officials.
The call came in shortly after noon from Care Now, 301 Main Street, where the patient was “exhibiting signs and symptoms of Ebola.”

It is stupid for someone with known / peripheral contact with Patient Zero to GO TO AN URGENT CARE CENTER with anything he thinks resembles Ebola. What instructions, if any, was this man given? Did he not think his symptoms resembled Ebola?
Wouldn't it have made more sense to tell this man, LAST WEEK, to STAY HOME AND CALL EMS if he has any inkling he might be coming down with a virus?
Now another circle of potential contacts to mess with.
Note what the EMS personnel are wearing. Article says the suspect patient is being taken to Patient Zero's hospital. Maybe this time around the hospital will expedite the Ebola blood testing.

A person in Frisco who may be showing Ebola symptoms and claims to have had contact with Thomas Eric Duncan, the man who died of the virus Wednesday in Dallas, is being investigated, the city says.
The person being transported to the hospital is a deputy with the Dallas County Sheriff's Office who was in Duncan's apartment, Sgt. Chris Dyer with the Dallas County Sheriff's Association confirmed to NBC 5.link

There was an article posted the other day regarding how contagious ebola is compared to other viruses. Here. A number called R0 was reported which indicates the degree of spread of a virus. Ebola was 2, mumps 10, measles 18. This is not a good comparison because for mumps and measles there are vaccines. Even if one were not vaccinated, it is likely one would survive from these childhood diseases. If one contracts ebola, some have survived but the mortality is quite high. Much is unknown about ebola modes of transmission at this point.

DALLAS (AP) -- The first Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States died Wednesday morning in a Dallas hospital, according to a hospital spokesman.
Thomas Eric Duncan was pronounced dead at 7:51 a.m. at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas, where he was admitted Sept. 28 and had been kept in isolation, according to spokesman Wendell Watson.
The Dallas County Medical Society supports the ongoing response to the Ebola crisis in Dallas. With regard to Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, we want to assure the public that based on the evidence for how Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) transmits from person to person, the actions taken by him, particularly when working with the family members of Thomas Eric Duncan, present no risk to him, nor would there be any risk to others he comes in contact with, including his family members.
Our assessment of Judge Jenkins' risk is as follows:
Per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, EVD has limited survival in the environment and places 24 hours as the upper limit for virus survival when consistent hospital disinfection practices are carried out. Because the judge was in the apartment well after 24 hours since the last time Mr. Duncan was there, the environmental contamination risk would be minimal to none.
The judge entered the apartment where Mr. Duncan was staying, following strict procedures set forth by the CDC. Without any direct contact with Mr. Duncan's blood or body fluids, there is almost no risk that the judge will become infected with EVD. To become infected, infected blood or body fluids must enter a break in one's skin, or infected blood or body fluids must be in contact with mucous membranes (mouth, nose or eyes). None of these circumstances occurred while the judge was in the apartment.
The judge interacted with family members of Mr. Duncan immediately after health officials conducted their assessment and found no signs or symptoms for EVD. All family members were without fever. Persons without signs or symptoms of EVD infection are not contagious.
The judge rode in the same vehicle with Mr. Duncan's family members to a new location, but this poses no risk for infection, as all family members had been assessed for any signs and symptoms of EVD. EVD is not transmitted through the air, based on available scientific information, so riding in a vehicle, even with someone who is contagious, does not place one at significant risk of infection. Again, because none of the family members of Mr. Duncan were showing EVD signs or symptoms during the ride in the vehicle, no risk is associated with such activities.
Judge Jenkins does not exhibit any signs or symptoms, so there is no risk to others he comes in contact with, including his family members. All available evidence, which includes the current investigation in West Africa, as well as prior outbreaks of EVD, has not demonstrated asymptomatic transmission.
Based on this assessment, we conclude that Judge Jenkins acted thoughtfully and carefully while performing his job duties. Further, his actions illustrate the commitment of our dedicated officials to continue working in spite of the unnecessary fears that surround this case. It is necessary to reduce the unwarranted fears and stigma surrounding Ebola in our community. Judge Jenkins was mindful of the rules for protecting against avoidable transmission.
The Dallas County Medical Society continues to work closely with those involved in this response. We welcome the opportunity to provide guidance based on current scientific knowledge regarding how the EVD is transmitted from person to person, and we remain available to assist officials during this crisis.

OS: I'm not so sure he lied. One report said that the family of the sick pregnant lady he helped, was telling people she had malaria. Presumably due to the stigma.
I think there's a good chance he believed that, and honestly didn't know. If he did, why did he risk his whole family? Why didn't he go the hospital immediately upon arrival or feeling sick? It was very much in his own interest to handle things differently, yet, he didn't.
I'm not glad he died, at all. But I'm glad there is no incentive to follow him.

The neighborhood in Dallas where he was when he got sick is literally third world. The vast majority of the 18,000 to 25,000 people who live in that area are refugees or immigrants from many nations. Many of them were placed there by resettlement programs.

More in the Ebola / Stumblebum department, this time from the Ebola-infected nurse in Spain:
"Sounding very tired, Teresa Romero, the nursing assistant who contracted Ebola in Spain, has told EL PAÍS that she may have become infected when removing her protective suit after cleaning up the room" of a patient who had just died of Ebola.
“I think the error was the removal of the suit,” she told EL PAÍS by phone. “I can see the moment it may have happened, but I’m not sure about it."
The Ebola patient is being treated in isolation on the sixth floor of the Carlos III hospital in Madrid. There is a television in the room, but she does not know if it is working. “I’m not getting much information,” she explained. The river of denial apparently runs through Madrid, also.
In statements made to TV network Cuatro, the nursing assistant said no one told her that she was infected with Ebola and that she found out via the EL PAÍS website. All those isolation measures might have tipped her off What’s more, she admitted that she did not tell her doctor that she had been in contact with patients who had been infected with the virus. “The nurses who dealt with me were wearing normal clothes, without any protection when they took me to the hospital. I asked the doctor for my results and he did not want to say anything to me, which is when I became suspicious,” she added.
The deputy director of the hospital,Yolanda Fuentes, added that this kind of incident can pass by unnoticed, and it was only today, Wednesday, that the nursing assistant mentioned what had happened.

Did the good judge actually enter an apartment that had been infected according to hospital standards?
Snake handlers on occasion survive their ill advised antics unharmed. Judge Jenkins may ultimately not contract Ebola.
None of this implies that snake handling or cavorting in a bio hazard hot zone is anything but foolish and self-destructive behavior.
The 'top men' should stomp out the fire, not play with it.

The problem is that the patient did lie about exposure when questioned in the hospital during his first visit. Protocol has several questions that are asked about exposure, and many of them do not mention specific diseases, only symptoms, like "Have you within the recent past (2 to 3 weeks) had physical contact with anyone that had a fever and any of the following: nausea vomiting diarrhea?" - He certainly lied when he said no to that.
And those are the sorts of questions that get asked on screening at the airport. They are not going to simply have a checkbox asking "Have you been exposed to Ebola Y/N?" because there is an incentive for denial. SO they ask several interlocking questions that cover symptoms and exposure.
As for that judge, there is a lawsuit against him for exposing the public due to his stupid actions during his visit to the infected apartment. He's a grandstanding lib judge elected by the few libs who are concentrated in a couple of districts in Dallas. So naturally he gets all the press compared to the sane and sober conservative judiciary all around Dallas.

Everybody is focused on Ebola. But not Marburg - in Uganda, a virus similar to Ebola or the virus the Honduran kids may have brought across and are now spreading in public schools. Incubation period on all these diseases 14 to 21 days. As an aside the Ferguson MO. Grand Jury is due to reach and release their findings at the end of Oct. November my be a wild ride.

I was curious about the timeline for ebola in Thomas Duncan's case. Here and Here He was exposed on Sept. 15. He showed symptoms on 9-24. The incubation period could be 9 days or shorter. He stopped in Washington and Brussels on his way here. He had contact with others in Dallas. There is another person showing symptoms who Duncan had contact with. The longer you have a virus the more viral material that is shed and the more contagious a person is. Are we about to see Patients 2, 3, 4,.....?

The incubation period could be 9 days or shorter. Right. It is also possible Duncan was exposed to a different case of Ebola, earlier, while he was in Liberia. Or the publicized dates of contact are erroneous. Or his publicized "contact" may not have been his source for contracting Ebola.
