SEAL Who Allegedly Shot bin Laden: Hersh's Article Is 'Garbage'

[MEDIAITE] Rob O’Neill, the former SEAL who claims to have pulled the trigger on Osama bin Laden, said Seymour Hersh’s revisionist account of the bin Laden raid was “garbage.”
Known in the 'team room' by colleagues as a "wall flower, man who kept to himself."
“When I was first sent this article, I thought it was a joke,” O’Neill, who now works as a Fox News contributor, told Shepherd Smith Monday afternoon. “For this guy to have a few guys from Pakistan lie to him and for him to write this story is just ridiculous.”

Writing in the London Review of Books, Hersh, a legendary investigative journalist, alleged that the Obama administration colluded with the Pakistani military, which was in fact keeping bin Laden, and that the raid was largely a post hoc fiction constructed by the White House.

“Well I’m sure that my friends who got shot at and almost took a few bullets to the face through the doors would disagree with them there and be insulted,” O’Neill said. “He’s never really risked his life for anything. All he’s done is have bad sources and print garbage.”

Puntland MPs demand emergency session over security lapse
GAROWE, Somalia -- More than 20 MPs in Somalia’s Puntland parliament have demanded emergency session over what they described ‘the worsening security situation, imminent political threats and long overdue pays’, Garowe Online reports.

In a letter bearing the signatures of 21 MPs of 66-seat-chamber and sent to GO, the MPs requested Parliament Speaker to call for the emergency session in light of the constant Al Shabaab attacks in Bossoso, unpaid salaries of government forces and civil servants and imminent threats from external sides on Tuesday.

“The state is facing serious security threats, and they continue to gain momentum by day in light of the latest events including the deadly capture by the enemy of Yalho village, the self-declared administration of Somaliland’s encroachment which edged closer to Garowe and the near-daily Al Shabaab attacks in the commercial city of Bossaso,” read the letter.

“Having seen the complaints of forces and civil servants, having assessed the political dangers facing Puntland,” said the MPs, adding that they request urgent parliamentary consultations on the prevailing matters.

Puntland MP, Abdiasis Saed Mohamud said, he’s is concerned about the security in greater perils on May 9.

Bossaso saw wave of Al Shabaab attacks, mainly targeting security forces and nigh raids on residences of senior government officials.

Obama's pick to be US ambassador to Somalia withdraws
WASHINGTON – President Obama's pick to be the first U.S. ambassador to Somalia in nearly 25 years is withdrawing her nomination. An administration official says Katherine Simonds Dhanani is turning down the nomination for personal reasons.
She was hoping to be ambassador to Mauritania...
The U.S. Embassy closed in 1991 when Somalia's government collapsed in civil war. The State Department had planned to post Dhanani, once confirmed by the Senate, in neighboring Kenya until security conditions would permit the embassy in Mogadishu to reopen.

Last week, John Kerry became the first secretary of state to visit Somalia in a move to deepen ties. He cast the move toward restoring the ambassadorship as a "recognition of the progress made and the promise to come."

I wonder what she did to piss off Ms. Obama to get the Somali gig?

So you can go to Leavenworth for 20 years for tax fraud or you can go to Somalia as the US ambassador...sounds fair.

Africa Subsaharan
More Cooperation Needed against Boko Haram, Says Chad
[AnNahar] Chad's President Idriss Deby has called for better coordination between coalition forces fighting Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
in northeast Nigeria
... a particularly crimson stretch of Islam's bloody border...
, warning that the group has been maimed but not defeated.

"If we still have to fight and catch (Boko Haram leader) Abubakar Shekau, the armies have to work together," Deby said on a visit to Nigeria's capital Abuja on Monday to meet outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan
... 14th President of Nigeria. He was Governor of Bayelsa State from 9 December 2005 to 28 May 2007, and was sworn in as Vice President on 29 May 2007. Jonathan is a member of the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP). He is a lover of nifty hats, which makes him easily recognizable unless someone else in the room is wearing a neat chapeau...
.

"Boko Haram has been broken but isn't finished," he told news hounds. "Our weak point is we haven't been able to coordinate operations on the ground."

Nigeria's army has been assisted by the militaries in Chad, Niger and Cameroon
...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
since early February, which has led to a series of successes against the snuffies in the restive region.

Nigeria-based Boko Haram has led a six-year Islamist insurgency that has killed some 15,000 people and displaced about 1.5 million.

Towns and territory captured by the Islamists have been retaken and a major offensive has been under way for weeks in the group's Sambisa Forest stronghold in Nigeria's Borno state.

But Chad and Niger especially have complained that the Nigerian military has not stepped in to take over security after towns in border regions have been recaptured by their soldiers.

There have also been reports of Abuja wanting the neighboring armies to withdraw from its territory, allowing in some cases the snuffies to regroup and come back in to liberated areas.

Deby, who has previously bemoaned the apparent lack of a joined-up approach, said Shekau had exploited the situation, allowing him to remain free from capture.

"If there had been better cooperation, Shekau would have been wiped out with all his commanders," the president added.

According to Chad, some 5,000 of its soldiers have been involved in the counter-insurgency and 71 have bit the dust.

Just before Nigeria's presidential election, which Jonathan lost to former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, Deby publicly criticized the president's approach to the security crisis.

On Monday, however, he congratulated Jonathan as a "great democrat" and "Pan-Africanist" for having contributed to the stability and peace of the region by conceding defeat to Buhari.

"When Nigeria coughs, all neighboring countries catch a cold," Deby added.

Deby also met Buhari on his visit but no details were disclosed about their discussions.

Only the brave return to town freed from Boko Haram rebels
[ARABNEWS] MICHIKA: Spent bullets crunch underfoot, a raided bank lies in ruins and burned out cars and cycle of violences dot the streets.

Michika may now be free from Boko Haram
... not to be confused with Procol Harum, Harum Scarum, possibly to be confused with Helter Skelter. The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality...
but the town in the remote north of Nigeria's Adamawa state is eerily quiet and signs of the holy warriors' presence are everywhere.

Workshops are empty, markets deserted, shops and schools shut.

beyond. She returned in April when it was liberated.

But even though the rebels have gone the almost deserted town is still under threat, she said.

"We need help before the rains. We don't have anything. No medicine, no mattresses... everything is required," the 38-year-old told AFP.

"Two of my four children are in the state capitl Yola. I need them back but I have nothing to feed them, so they are better off staying there. The rains may come but there's no way to farm because we don't have anything to cultivate," added Jamila Gambo, as civilian vigilantes manned a checkpoint with home-made weapons. "If there's no food at the end of the day, people will starve," she said.

Arabia
Hezbollah: Suspending Al-Massirah TV Transmission 'Pure Piracy'
[ALMANAR.LB] Hezbollah denounced taking the Yemeni broadcaster al-Massirah off air by Egyptian satellite company Nilesat, describing the move as "piracy".

In a statement released by the party's Media Relations, Hezbollah condemned the "frantic" attempts by the Arab-Western repression machine in a bid to silence al-Massirah TV.

"These persistent attempts prove the channel's active and effective role in disclosing the terrorist crimes committed by the US-Saudi aggression against Yemeni civilians and institutions."

"These attempts also expose the inability of the media outlets employed by the aggression in a bid to justify its crimes," the statement said.

Hezbollah also stressed that the crime of suspending the transmission of al-Massirah is a "pure piracy", noting that it violates the international laws which guarantee the freedom of media.

Bangladesh
Threatened continually, blogger Bijoy tried to leave Bangladesh
[Dhaka Tribune] Threatened for quite a long time, Blogger Ananta Bijoy was trying to leave Bangladesh for the last two months, Bijoy's friend and colleague Asif Mohiuddin told German broadcaster Deutsche Welle. Ananta Bijoy, a banker by profession, was hacked dead in a machete attack this morning, the latest casualty in a series of barbaric liquidations of free thinkers, allegedly carried out by Islamist fundamentalists.

"I was helping Bijoy get out of the country for the last two months. I got his papers together and submitted them to some organizations in order to get him out.

"He was being threatened for a long time. He told me many times that he was on the [terrorists'] hit list and that he was still at home because of the threats. Some people attacked his house a few months ago. He was afraid and panicking. I told him not to leave his house, but he had to go to work," said Mohiuddin, a scholar now in Germany who survived both a similar attempt on his life in 2013, and being incarcerated
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
here in Dhaka.

"He was a very good friend and I am very upset," he mourned.

Asif then expressed his opinions on the series attacks on online activists, thinly veiling a hint that government could be supporting the fundamentalists by being reluctant to act: "Maybe they don't care, or maybe they are afraid of them[fundamentalists]. I don't know. But after the death of Avijit Roy, the prime minister spoke to his father Ajay Roy. This was never mentioned in the media. It was a secret call to apologise; our prime minister thinks that her support for atheists would project a bad image for her party.

"Our leaders don't want to be seen as supporters of secularists or atheists. They want to show that they are very Islamic; this is why fundamentalists have the courage to kill bloggers," he concluded.

He then revisited the attack he survived: "When they attacked me, it lasted barely 30 seconds, but I was badly injured in that short time. Avijit Roy's wife told me that their attack lasted a minute at most. Before people around the victims could react, the murderers made away."

Britain
Britain to announce new laws on fighting Islamic extremism
[IsraelTimes] In first policy announcement since election victory, Cameron to present new measures to combat 'poisonous Islamist ideology'

British Prime Minister David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
was to announce new laws to combat "poisonous Islamist ideology" Wednesday in his first major policy announcement since winning last week's general election.

His center-right Conservative government is to include a new law to "defeat extremism" in its legislative program which will be announced to parliament by Queen Elizabeth II on May 27.

Britannia's strategy on Islamist extremism has been in the spotlight for months since Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) executioner "Jihadi John" was identified as Mohammed Emwazi from London and a string of young people left Britannia to fight for the IS group in Syria.

Cameron is to say Britannia has been "passively tolerant" for too long and will vow to "turn the page on this failed approach," according to his office.

The new measures are expected to go further than under the last Cameron-led administration because their former coalition partners, the centrist Liberal Democrats, blocked some measures.

The legislation is set to include new banning orders for "extremist organizations" seen as responsible for radicalizations and restrictions on people deemed bully boyz who seek to enter Britannia.

The government will also get powers to close premises "where bully boyz seek to influence others", and there would be new powers against charities which divert funds towards groups labelled Lion of Islam and terrorist.

"We will introduce legislation to combat groups and individuals who reject our values and promote messages of hate," Home Secretary Theresa May is to say, according to Cameron's office.

The measures were set to be unveiled at the first meeting of the National Security Council under Cameron's new government.

The Moslem Council of Britannia umbrella group criticized the government's approach to the issue earlier this year, calling for more consultation with Moslem communities.

"Rather than relying on a premise of a conveyor belt from conservative and non-violent extremism to violent extremism that lacks credence, a fresh approach is required," its secretary-general Shuja Shafi wrote in March.

Somali-American man conspiring to support ISIS arrested
Washington -- Abdullahi Yusuf, a Somali-American who pleaded guilty to conspiring to support terrorists in the Middle East, has been taken into custody for allegedly violating conditions while living in a St. Paul halfway house, according to court documents filed Monday.

Yusef, a student at Inver Grove Community College, drew national attention after a federal judge decided to place him in a halfway house and provide counseling for him rather than hold him in custody while awaiting sentencing. Yusuf’s alleged violations were not detailed in court records.
Judge came to his senses?
After Yusuf pleaded guilty earlier this year to conspiracy charges, Chief U.S. District Judge Michael Davis agreed to a proposal by his attorneys to enroll the 18-year-old man in Heartland Democracy’s program designed to reshape the attitudes of troubled youth, with special emphasis on Somali-American teens who feel disenfranchised. The move was hailed by counterterrorism experts as a novel idea and was viewed as a test case on whether such persons could be rehabilitated.
The answer to which is 'no'...
In May 2014, Yusuf was stopped from boarding a flight by FBI agents at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. He’d bought a ticket for Istanbul, Turkey, records showed. Agents had been tipped to Yusuf because of his suspicious behavior when he applied weeks earlier for a passport.

A day later, Yusuf’s colleague, Abdi Nur, successfully flew from the airport and made his way to Syria where he is fighting for the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL).

Nawaz Sharif pledges support in Afghan fight against Taliban
[DAWN] Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
during a presser in Kabul on Tuesday strongly condemned the surge in attacks by the Afghan Taliban under their Operation Azm offensive, which Pakistain termed as acts of terrorism.

"All sanctuaries, when found, will be eliminated by direct action, and will be monitored by the existing mechanism," Nawaz said, adding "Any effort by any bad boy or group to destabilise Afghanistan will be dealt with severely and such elements will be outlawed and hunted down."

"In case of terrorist activity, both Pakistain and Afghanistan retain the right of counter actions in conjunction ... We agreed that peace and stability in the region will remain elusive until the menace of terrorism afflicting the region is comprehensively addressed," he added.

The prime minister expressed confidence that Pakistain and Afghanistan would succeed in rooting out the menace of terrorism through their firm determination and by adopting a comprehensive and coordinated strategy.

He said that Pakistain had the highest stake in a peaceful and stable Afghanistan.

Pakistan to grant UK access to Imran Farooq murder suspects
[DAWN] Pakistain has agreed to grant British investigation authorities access to the main suspects locked away
Into the paddy wagon wit' yez!
in Dr Imran Farooq's murder case, DawnNews reported.

Sources privy to the matter said Federal Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali Khan conveyed Pakistain's approval in this regard on Tuesday in a meeting with United Kingdom's counter-terrorism department chief Richard Walton.

Sources said Walton arrived in Pakistain on Monday and met the interior minister in Islamabad the next day before leaving for England.

Pak authorities have agreed to let UK authorities access arrested suspect Moazzam Ali Khan, who is believed to be the primary suspect in Dr Imran Farooq's murder case, reported DawnNews.

Pakistain's government and the interior ministry claim it was Moazzam who not only planned the technical details of the murder but also provided logistical support.

Pakistan military officials admit defector's key role in Bin Laden operation
[DAWN] Two former senior Pakistain military officials told AFP on Tuesday that a 'defector' from country's intelligence agency did assist the US in its hunt for the late Osama bin Laden
... who was laid out deader than a mackerel, right next to the mackerel...
but denied the two countries had officially worked together.

The officials' accounts came after the publication of a controversial news report by US journalist Seymour Hersh in which he claimed to have uncovered a 'secret deal' between Washington and Islamabad that reportedly resulted in the killing of Al-Qaeda chief in 2011.

The White House has flatly rejected Hersh's claims that Pakistain was told in advance about the May 2 special forces raid in Abbottabad
... A pleasant city located only 30 convenient miles from Islamabad. The city is noted for its nice weather and good schools. It is the site of Pakistain's military academy, which was within comfortable walking distance of the residence of the late Osama bin Laden....
A source -- who was a serving senior military official at the time of the raid -- told AFP that the defector was a "resourceful and energetic" mid-ranking intelligence officer whose efforts were critical to the operation's success.

Hersh's report quoted a senior US source as saying a "walk-in" approached the then-Islamabad station chief for the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 2010 promising to lead them to bin Laden, who according to the journalist had been imprisoned by Pak authorities at the Abbottabad compound since 2006.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
the Pak military source told AFP the defector had no knowledge that his target was bin Laden, but he was instead given a task that would help verify the Al-Qaeda chief's identity.

The source declined to elaborate on what that task was, but a Pak investigation found that the CIA had run a fake vaccination programme with the help of physician Dr Shakeel Afridi who obtained DNA samples.

Qazi Khalilullah, Pakistain's foreign ministry front man, meanwhile said the government was investigating Hersh's account and would announce its reaction soon. "We are looking into the matter and will give our reaction soon," he said.

European officials express guarded optimism over future Kurdish independence
[RUDAW.NET] Following a visit to the US, Kurdistan Region President Masoud Barzani began a tour of Europe, where some officials have expressed initial support for a free Kurdistan.

"The Kurdistan region has all the qualities and basic criteria to declare independence and can become an effective world country," said Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán after a meeting with Barzani Monday.

Other officials have also chimed in, but warned any move towards independence must be done peacefully and constitutionally.

"We see the Kurdistan region as a stable area in the region compared to other places," said Atis Sjanits, the Latvian Ambassador to Iraq, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and Iran, in an interview with Rudaw. "The first step should be taken to eliminate ISIS, and the second step should be managing the process in a legal way."

He added though that most European officials desire a united Iraq. "Although, the European officials on the media are saying Iraq should not be divided, they are still discussing the independence subject with the Kurdish leaders," he said.

However,
it was a brave man who first ate an oyster...
Czech diplomat Jana Hybaskova, the EU ambassador to Iraq, said an independent Kurdistan was possible if done in a proper manner.

"I know what the legal steps are for the declaration of independence," she said. "For Kurds, the process has to start with the referendum to solve the problem of the disputed areas."

"The only way the referendum could be successful is if it is through the constitution without violence," Hybaskova added in comments to Rudaw.

#3  Given that the Kurdish region takes in parts of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran I figure that the Kurdish independence documents will arrive on Unicorn back.

#4  Kurds need to get their geographically spread out population out of Turkey and Iran and into Iraq and Syria. Do that and they might get Turkey and Iran to support independence.

Super Hornet Crashes in Persian Gulf, Crew Safely Recovered
An U.S. Navy F/A-18 F Super Hornet has crashed in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday at about 9:30 A.M. EST, Navy official told USNI News this afternoon. The crew onboard the two-person Boeing strike fighter ejected out of the aircraft and were safely recovered by crew aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), the service said.

“Initial reports indicate both are conscious and alert and without serious injury,” read a Navy statement. “The crash was not a result of hostile activity.”

The more than $60 million fighter lost power shortly after takeoff from Roosevelt and while the sailors ejected the aircraft safely the plane has been declared a total loss, the service told USNI News.

The crash is the first operational loss of of a Super Hornet since 2013 and the first Navy F-18 fighter lost since Operation Inherent Resolve (OIR) began last year, according to press reports.

The Super Hornet was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 211 “Checkmates” (VFA 211) based in Naval Air Station Oceana, Va.

#3  I came across something a while back explaining how serious an ejection is, and sometimes the ejecting party does end up shorter, sometimes suffering injuries which make difficult any sense of a full recovery.

I would guess that part of the pre-launch includes how and where to eject in case of a power failure so as to not be keel-hauled by the carrier.

#4  Yep, from what I've read, ejection is not a good thing at all.....except for the alternative.

#5  RE #3: To avoid the keel hauling you may notice that following most cat shots, the aircraft turns outboard, or away from the CV's course.

And too early to blame the LD: early in its life it was found that many crashes were due to pilots trying to actually fly the bird; now they just grip the handles on the canopy structure and let HAL establish a positive rate of climb before trying to out think the computer.

Iranian Commander to US, Saudi: Attacking Aid Ship Will Spark War in the Region
[ALMANAR.LB] Deputy Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Brigadier General Massoud Jazzayeri warned the United States and Saudi Arabia that a war would take place in the region in case the Iranian ship dispatched to deliver aid to Yemen was attacked.

"The US and Saudi Arabia should know that Iran's self-restraint has a limited,” General Jazzayeri told the Arabic-language TV Alalam on Tuesday evening.

"Attacking the Iranian Red Crescent aid ship will spark war in the region,” he said, noting that “this fire may not be put out or brought under control."

An Iranian ship carrying humanitarian aid supplies, relief workers and peace activists from several countries left the Southern Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas for Yemen on Monday.

"We are a group of relief workers, physicians and peace activists from the US, Europe and Germany. We are a part of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Red Crescent Society. We are trying to bring medical stuff, flour and water for the Yemeni people," a statement issued by 7 anti-war activists aboard the ship said on Monday.

"A large number of physicians and a few journalists from Iran are accompanying us on the ship and we intend to deliver 2,500 tons of medical supplies to the Hudaydah port on the Red Sea," the statement added according to Fars news agency.

The activists reiterated that everything on the deck has been checked to make sure that there is no weapon on the ship.

The anti-war activists also condemned the Saudi fighter jets bombing of the Sana'a airport to prevent the delivery of Iran's humanitarian aids to Yemen, and stressed, "Preventing the dispatch of humanitarian aid to another country is a flagrant violation of the international laws."

Wid Iraq, the Crimea, East Ukraine Separatism, Syria = Baby Assad, Egypt = Mubarak, + Libya on the Bammer's FP = mighty "red line" record, WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG!?

IRAN = CHINA = PUTINIST RUSSIA = IMO ARE NOT GOING TO UNILATERALLY GIVE UP THEIR NEWFOUND, "MAHANIST", SUPERPOWER-ESQUE "SPHERE(S) OF INFLUENCE" WIDOUT A FIGHT.

The best the Bammer = USA can hope for is another "Iraq" or "Syria" Model-Scenario.
