Group pushing to replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 selects Harriet Tubman as their candidate
[DAILYMAIL.CO.UK]
  • The group Women on 20s says 600,000 voters chose the Maryland-born escaped slave and Underground Railroad conductor to appear on a $20
  • Tubman beat out Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt and Wilma Mankiller, the first female chief of the Cherokee Nation, in the final round of voting
  • Now the group intends to petition President Obama to encourage the treasury to make the first such change since 1929
Somebody 'splain to me why anyone is required to pay any attention to these people.

#11  I guess piecing together a French/Spanish/American/Indian/Free Black army and then leading them to victory over crack British forces and saving the City of New Orleans doesn't get much respect these days. IIRC, Jackson's army was responsible for the most lop-sided American victory on U.S. Soil.

#12  That deserves this ConstantCough:

#13  IIRC it could have been close, but a detachment of British crossed the river and were put so far off target it effectively took them out of the fight. It was then a British push towards the center where many veterans of the war vs. Napoleon met their fate.

These were crack troops who didn't run, but were used to European battlefields and were already exhausted by marching through swampy land and various sleep deprivation harassments.

A goodly portion of the American forces were volunteers and irregulars. Legit win.

#14  I nominate Jesse Jackson.

At least they won't have to change the script, Just the portrait.

Now I dare you not to laugh

#15  All very tiring and divisive. We don't have a 'Big Five' per se, but we could easily switch to political party and animal themes. How about it ?

#16  I wasn't aware that there was anything wrong with the 20 dollar bill but, since there apparently is, put Palin on it...and watch the heads explode!

#21  Rantburg University trivia question: Who was the officer in charge of the 'take down' of abolitionist John Brown at the Harper's Ferry Arsenal?

CLUE: This U.S. Army Major later became the president of Washington & Lee University and is buried in the campus chapel there today.

#22  So they decide to put out a 'Tubman' note, but there's too many Jacksons in circulation worldwide. So they decide to make up a new denomination, say the $15 dollar bill. As a further stroke of genius, they want to make it half size to cut down on production costs. That also means no change machine in the world will take it.
So when you go down to the post office to get a $35 dollar postage stamp, you'll get a 'Tubman' in change from your fifty.

#26  A lot of Native Americans have an understandable if misguided issue with Andrew Jackson. I say put Ronald Reagan on the Twenty he earned it by winning the Cold War.

Chicago's credit downgraded to junk
Posted by: DarthVader || 05/13/2015 10:46 || Comments || Link || [3 views] Top|| File under:

#1  With almost every country, state/province and city in the world trying to spend their way to prosperity.... makes me wonder what will happen when the whole world realizes it is in debt up to its eyeballs and no way to get out from under it and confidence in the governments and financial institutions completely fail.
Posted by: DarthVader || 05/13/2015 10:48 Comments || Top||

#2  Interest rates will rise...

Don't be in debt when that happens.

#4  Junk? That would be a step up.
Posted by: gorb || 05/13/2015 14:24 Comments || Top||

#5  Moody’s has now downgraded the city of Chicago’s bonds to a rating of Slightly Less Valuable Than Gum Wrappers. (From the editorial board of the Chicago Tribune.)

Heading towards Detroit realm. Too many grifters and takers sucking off the public teet. Too many crooked politicians--but then I repeat myself.
