Afghanistan
Don't destabilise Afghanistan, PM warns Taliban
[DAWN] Using some of the strongest language to date, Pakistain warned the Taliban on Tuesday that their violent acts in Afghanistan in future would be treated as terrorism.

Pakistain and Afghanistan, during Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf...
's day-long visit to Kabul, agreed on a series of actions against the Lions of Islam on their respective sides, according to reports from the Afghan capital.

Addressing a joint media conference with Afghanistan's Caped President Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, now president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. ..
, Mr Sharif said: "Pakistain strongly condemns increase in violence and Operation Azm offensive by Afghan Taliban. Continuation of such offensive and attacks will be construed as terrorist acts and we condemn such attacks in strongest terms."

Islamabad had recently condemned the Taliban's Spring Offensive, but it was the first time for Pakistain to say that violence by the Lion of Islam group from now on would be treated as terrorism.

"We stand in strong solidarity with Afghanistan. I assure you that the enemies of Afghanistan cannot be friends of Pakistain," the prime minister said.

Mr Sharif, who was accompanied by Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif and other senior foreign policy, military and intelligence aides, visited Kabul at a time when the goodwill that emerged in the relationship after the change of government in Kabul seemed to be fading away due to fresh Taliban violence and the promised reconciliation process' failure to take off. Afghan leaders had started voicing their frustration with Pakistain on this count.

The prime minister is believed to have taken the army chief and Inter-Services Intelligence
...the Pak military intelligence agency that controls the military -- heads of ISI typically get promoted into the Chief of Army Staff position. It serves as a general command center for favored turban groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad, tries to influence the politix of neighboring countries, and carries out a (usually) low-level war against India in Kashmir...
chief Lt Gen Rizwan Akhtar along with him to reassure the Afghans that both civilian and military leadership supported the peace initiative.

The categorical statement condemning the Taliban violence and treating it as terrorism in future was aimed at dispelling the doubts among the Afghan leaders that Pakistain had been soft towards the Taliban and their counter-terrorism operation was only against the Pak Taliban.

This is, however, not the first time that a Pak prime minister took his army and intelligence chiefs along with him on a trip to Kabul. In April 2011, then prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani
... Pakistain's former prime minister, whose occasional feats of mental gymnastics could be awe-inspiring ...
too had led a similar delegation. But, the resolve on both sides this time was much stronger than before.

Mr Sharif reiterated Pakistain's support for an intra-Afghan grinding of the peace processor, but at the same time said that he and President Ghani had agreed that peace in the region was not possible without crushing terrorism through a "a comprehensive and coordinated strategy."

Somalia: Hundreds arriving by boats in Puntland amid pause in Yemen fighting
[GAROWE ] Puntland government officials and medics have received more than 1500 refugees fleeing Yemen violence at a seaport on the Gulf of Aden amid humanitarian pause in Impoverished Yemen on Wednesday, Garowe Online reports.

The desperate people in their hundreds arrived by a boat, pleading with aid workers and local authorities to attend to aging people and children and recounting harrowing tales. Shamis-3 boat carried Somalis fleeing the fighting and hundreds of Yemeni and Ethiopian refugees from Mukalla port.

Puntland’s Minister for Ports and Marine transport, Deputy Minister of Interior, Bossaso mayor and Red Crescent and IOM officials oversaw the disembarking of the largest number of people seeking refuge in the country’s northeastern state in recent weeks.

Since the onset of Yemen’s descent into deadly conflict in April, Puntland officials say, the huge influx stands at 5083 including foreigners.

Deputy Interior Minister Qoob-Deero told reporters that the boat with 1723 people of whom 763 are children and 581 are women has docked at Bossaso port.

Somalia President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud earlier on April 29 unveiled that preparations to evacuate as many as thousands of Somali refugees by planes and ships were underway. Mohamud added that security agencies will keep vigil on terrorist elements aiming to mix themselves with worried Yemeni refugees.

Precarious truce is said to be holding after Saudi-led coalition of Arab countries and Houthis agreed to a five-day humanitarian ceasefire.

Egypt cracks down on Gaza tunnels
[IsraelTimes] As Egyptian security forces continue to fight an Islamist insurgency, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi said Tuesday that at least 80 percent of the tunnels between the Sinai Peninsula and the Gazoo Strip have been destroyed, and that nearly 200 gunnies were locked away
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
in massive security operation.

The Egyptian efforts were reported a day before a series of kabooms killed four Egyptian soldiers and three civilians in the desert peninsula.

Sissi said the buffer zone with neighboring Gazoo had been expanded to three kilometers in certain locations, and that security forces have destroyed 150 terror bases, according to a Falesteen newspaper report quoted by media watchdog group Middle East Monitor.

It was not made immediately clear when the operation had taken place.

Egyptian IS affiliate releases video documenting terror attacks
[Ynet] The local Sinai affiliate of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group has released a video documenting a series of terrorist acts against Egyptian security forces. One of the incidents shown was an attack on a military checkpoint in the north Sinai and the deadly bombing of a police checkpoint in Arish that killed Egyptian soldiers and coppers.

The video also showed the kidnapping of an Egyptian soldier and raids on weapons belonging to security forces.

Arabia
History a casualty in Yemen's war as bombs smash ancient sites
[REUTERS] Folklore calls Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of. Except for a tiny handfull of Jews everthing there is very Islamic...
the cradle of the Arabs but its ancient heritage is being destroyed as the Arab world's most powerful states bomb Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
rebels in the impoverished country.

Air strikes this week on the Shi'ite Moslem militia's northern stronghold of Saada by a Saudi-led Sunni Moslem alliance partly razed the city's 1,200-year old Hadi Mosque, the oldest seat of Shi'ite learning in the Arabian Peninsula.

Ancient stucco buildings in the medieval coffee-trading port of Zabid on the Red Sea lie in ruins, while pro-Saudi rustics and the Iran-allied Houthis clash in central Yemen beside a shrine said to have been built by the Biblical Queen of Sheba.

The pre-Islamic walled city of Barakish in Yemen's north, capital of a trade empire which sent Arabian incense to perfume the temples of ancient Greece and Rome, has also been bombed as the alliance tries in vain to reverse Houthi gains.

An Ottoman fort of white stone on a mountaintop overlooking the central city of Taiz has been pounded for days after the Iran-allied fighters, Yemen's dominant force, holed up there.

Hundreds of people have died in more than six weeks of fighting while a near-blockade has cut off food and medical supplies, sparking a humanitarian crisis.

Bangladesh
Khaleda for political coexistence
[Dhaka Tribune] the loathesome Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
yesterday said the ruling party men were now rejoicing over the fact that it had been able to suppress BNP's anti-government campaign.

Awami League leaders are relishing each and every move of the government -- repression, filing cases and ruthless oppression of BNP men.

"None could draw any benefit by shunning democratic political process earlier. I am urging the ruling party to take lesson from the history," she said. She asked the Awami League to return to the ambience of political coexistence and fair competitiveness.

Issuing a blurb signed by her Press Secretary Maruf Kamal Khan, Khaleda demanded immediate release of BNP big shots as most of them are indisposed in jail.

BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee members Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Vice-Chairman Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi are now languishing in jails.

Just because of political vengeance and to repress the opposition the Awami League has detained many leaders for a long time in cases filed by ACC which is subservient to the government, she alleged.

Many of those leaders, aged and ailing, are being tortured both physical and mentally in the name of remand.

Khaleda alleged that BNP leader Nasiruddin Ahmed Pintu died due to lack of proper treatment,

Mirza Fakhrul was sent back to jail without proper treatment and Khandakar Mosharraf was also denied treatment.

"We along with their family members are concerned about their health."

Khaleda demanded withdrawal of all false and politically motived cases filed against opposition leaders and activists. She also alleged that detained leaders and activists were also denied bail and treatment abroad.

Lawmen blamed for secular activists' murder
[Dhaka Tribune] Failure of the law enforcers in arresting suspected accused, delay in investigation and lengthy trial procedure to punish the religious forces of Evil are behind the repeated murders of advocates of secularism, allege experts and activists.

They blame the law enforcement agencies for negligence while some think that religious fanatics have their own men in the security forces and the government's crucial positions. Otherwise, they think, the government could be able to uproot militancy and the murders would not have taken place.

"It seems that the killings have been taking place as the criminals see they can evade arrest and punishment. Moreover, no specialised system has been adopted by the government to track and arrest the bully boys," Prof Shah Ehsan Habib of criminology department of Dhaka University told the Dhaka Tribune.

"Failure of the law enforcers in taking prompt and effective steps after every incident and the pending trials in previous cases work as inspiration for the criminals."

He thinks if the law enforcers act responsibly and the government executes sentences against the bully boys, such killings will come down in the future.

"Since the killers belong to some radical Islamist groups, it is a political fight for the government," Prof Habib added.

Yesterday, family of the latest victim, Ananta Bijoy Das, filed a case against four unnamed persons over the murder that took place at Subidbazar of Sylhet on Tuesday. The law enforcers are in the dark about the killers and their affiliation.

Three other secular activists were killed recently -- Rajshahi University teacher Prof AKM Shafiul Islam, science writer Avijit Roy and activist Oyasiqur Rahman Babu -- in the hands of radical groups.

But the Detective Branch of police and US investigating agency FBI could not make any breakthrough as yet.

Detectives suspect that members of bully boy outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team were behind the killings. Recently emerged group Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) has grabbed credit for the four killings.

According to media reports, the five banned bad boy groups including JMB and Hizbut Tahrir
...an al-Qaeda recruiting organization banned in most countries. It calls for the reestablishment of the Caliphate...
have revived their activities recently whereas the law enforcers have traced a number of new outfits. It is also learnt that the major groups have been working together since late last year aiming at establishing Shariah law in the country.

The Awami League-led government in 2011 reinstated secularism in the constitution. However,
there's more than one way to skin a cat...
it recognises Islam as the state religion and allows religion-based politics.

"The law enforcers always say 'investigation is under way' only to hide their failure in unearthing the mystery behind the bully boy acts," Imran H Sarker, spokesperson of Gonojagoron Moncho, said.

Some people within the government are working as insiders for the bully boys. "Otherwise, the forces of Evil could not kill the secular bloggers one by one," he claimed.

Vatican recognizes state of Palestine in new treaty
H/t Gates of Vienna
The Vatican formally recognized the state of Palestine in a new treaty, finalized on Wednesday.
Poor old Goldstein simply can't catch a break from these people in Rome.
The treaty, which follows a decision in 2012 by the U.N. General Assembly to recognize a Palestinian state, is the first legal document negotiated between the Holy See and the Palestinian state.

Pope Francis is due to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas this weekend, when two new saints from the Holy Land will be canonized.
Ever wondered what your immediate superior will have to say about this, Your Holiness?
Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 05/14/2015 02:38 || Comments || Link || [6 views] Top|| File under:

#1  I recall that the Vatican made a treaty with Hitler. The concordat of 1933.

Hitler would support the church, and the Church would not oppose his party or interfere in politics.

Germany disbanded the Catholic Centrist Party which was the only credible threat to Hitler. So when the good people of Germany turned around and wanted to get rid of the Nazis, they found their main support kicked out from under them by Pope Pius XI.

The Vatican liked this as they were deeply suspicious of democracy. They preferred fascism. The fear was partly of blowback: democratic ideas might be exported back into Vatican city and the autocratic heirarchy don't want that.

They also thought, like Hitler, that democracy was a precurser to Communism and everyone was afraid of that.

So they made a nasty deal with the devil.

Hitler's birthday was celebrated from the pulpits all the way through the War. Even when they *knew* what he was doing to the jews. They didn't care.

So here we see the Catholic Heirarchy doing again what they do best: siding with fascism.

The best hope of humanity is secularism. The religious must be put back in their box. No more sky daddy rules.

#2  Even when they *knew* what he was doing to the jews. They didn't care.

I've to disagree, anon1. I believe they cared a great deal.

#3  Not enough, sadly grom. This is no slur on the many good Catholics who did care, but on the church heirarchy which did not.

The New York Times of December 7, 1941, page 33, at a time when it was known what the Third Reich was doing to jews, communists, and political opponents, printed the following:

War prayer for Reich

The annual conference of German Catholic Bishops in Fulda has recommended the introduction of a special "war prayer"

That war prayer was for a Nazi victory.

Each year, on April 20, Cardinal Bertram of Breslau sent birthday wishes for Hitler - warmest congratulations. He also opposed all public protests against the deportation and massacre of jews.

It wasn't just because they had to make a deal with the devil in order to survive and to shelter as many people as they could.

It was partly because they liked fascism

It was also partly because they felt the jews had it coming for the crime of deicide. That particular charge wasn't dropped by the Vatican until 1964

#4  You misunderstand me, anon1.
Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 05/14/2015 10:58 Comments || Top||

#5  The founding fathers of the United States of America were deeply religious. But they demanded that there would be no church-state.

Church-states are organizations of human beings. Sooner or later all organizations of human beings are corrupted. That includes the Vatican.

When Jesus Christ fed the 5,000, the multitude immediately declared him King of Israel. In response He immediately walked away from that multitude. His Kingdom is not of this world.

The only Kingdom that cannot be subjugated by any government or organization is true Kingdom of Christianity. Any nation that models its laws based on true Christianity becomes a super power, but is still not to be a church state.

House Debates Recruiting Illegal Aliens Ahead of Americans for Military
On Tuesday, the Breitbart News team on Capitol Hill brought to light Congress's efforts to allow illegal aliens to enlist in the U.S. military, endangering national security and shoving American citizens to the back of the line for the benefit of invaders. Today, the House Rules Committee will continue to debate this proposition. Live updates are below.

UPDATE, by Edwin Mora, 5:13 PM: Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) says it's "ludicrous we're using AUMF's (Authorization for Use of Military Force) from 2001 to justify" Obama's conflicts on immigration and amnesty.

UPDATE, by Edwin Mora, 4:51 PM: Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-AL)
asked: "Why are we talking about immigration when we're dealing with a defense bill?"

He went on to echo other GOP lawmakers who commented on the Gallego amendment, saying the it "has nothing to do with defense." The Gallego amendment "will jeopardize the entire bill," he concluded.

UPDATE, by Edwin Mora, 4:42 PM: Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL)
to Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) I disagree with your argument that "we lack enough Americans and lawful immigrants to meet" our military needs, adding that the "we are here to help U.S. citizens and lawful immigrants."

UPDATE, by Alex Swoyer, 4:39 PM: Rep. Polis (D-CO) defended Gallego amendment: "This is really a job creator in the private sector."

Brooks disagreed.

"There's also a distinction about the quality of jobs," he said.

The two Congressmen are arguing about whether the Gallego amendment would open up jobs in the private sector as illegals leave those positions, to join the military for citizenship under the Gallego amendment provision.

UPDATE, by Edwin Mora, 4:37 PM: Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) expressed support for the amendment proposed by his colleague Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL) to strike the Gallego amnesty amendment in the 2016 NDAA, saying the "immigration issue doesn't really belong" in the NDAA. The amnesty amendment does not benefit the military, he added.

UPDATE, by Matthew Boyle, 4:36 PM: Rep. Michael Burgess (R-TX), a member of the House Rules Committee, said there "is nothing about the Gallego amendment that helps the military" adding that the NDAA is not the "place" for immigration to be debated. "The amendment does not belong in the bill in the first place," Burgess said.

Chairman Sessions added that he's heard views from lots of members on this.

Democratic Rep. James McGovern (D-MA) defended the amnesty amendment contained within NDAA from Gallego, saying it passed through regular order. Rep. Jared Polis (D-CO) a liberal Democrat from Colorado, is also defending it with the argument of "military readiness" arguing that somehow illegal aliens may be better than Americans serving in the military. "We need to have the very best men and women" serving in the military. He also argued incredulously that this would create jobs in the private sector.

UPDATE, by Alex Swoyer, 4:32 PM: Rep. Sessions says this issue must be debated.

Rep. Burgess said, "There is nothing of the Gallego amendment that helps the military. The amendment does not belong in this bill in the first place."

UPDATE, by Matthew Boyle, 4:27 PM: Rep. Dave Brat (R-VA) is now testifying in favor of the Brooks amendment. Brat won his election in 2014 thanks in large part to now former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor backing the exact same policy -- amnesty for DREAMers in the NDAA -- and Brat said that the defense bill should not be the place for immigration matters.

UPDATE, by Alex Swoyer, 3:53 PM: According to Politico Florida Playbook's Marc Caputo on Wednesday morning, Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) --a Republican--is pushing harder for even more amnesty in the NDAA than what Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ)
0% got in there. Curbelo is specifically pushing for an amendment from Rep. Jeff Denham (R-CA), the so-called ENLIST Act, into the bill.

"Curbelo's one of a handful of Republicans still pushing for immigration reform. He hopes that the House Rules committee, perhaps at its meeting today, greenlights an effort to allow a vote on whether to amend Rep. Jeff Denham's Enlist Act onto the National Defense Authorization Act," Caputo wrote on Wednesday."

#1  Just more new evidencia amongst many others that, thanks to many years or decades of allowing illegals to collect US Fed-State public benefits, etc. that by the decisions or actions of the US Govt. itself these illegals are now in reality Quasi- or US-Citizens-in-being, iff not in fact, + THAT ITS ACTUALLY THE FED GOVT. THAT IS MORE BREAKING THE LAW THAN NOT BY N-O-T GIVING THESE ILLEGALS FULL-FLEDGED CITIZENSHIP-N-RESIDENCY, ANDOR BY DEPORTING THEM FROM THE US BACK TO THEIR COUNTRY(S) OF ORIGIN.

OOOOOOOPPPPSSSSIES.

All thingys have a day or reckonin', and that day is seemingly here for the USoAmerika as per illegal aliens.

True to form, the DemoLeft is bitching-n-complaining mightily about the sea changes to US Society wrought by the very thing they themselves did much to create.

I could say I told 'em so but I won't.

WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG? Obama DHS busted shipping busloads of Somali Muslims into California

If to detention centers, are we to assume they are illegal immigrants?

Reformed militants set free in Bajaur
[DAWN] About 29 former snuffies were set free after completing vocational training at Navi Saha -- an internment centre in Bajaur Agency, aka Turban Central
...Smallest of the agencies in FATA. The Agency administration is located in Khar. Bajaur is inhabited almost exclusively by Tarkani Pashtuns, which are divided into multiple bickering subtribes. Its 52 km border border with Afghanistan's Kunar Province makes it of strategic importance to Pakistain's strategic depth...
A ceremony to this effect was held here the other day on the premises of the institute attended by Bajaur political agent Mohammad Yaha Akhunzada, Commandant Bajaur Scouts Col Mir Amir Ali and bigwigs of security forces and local administration.

On the occasion, Amir Ali said different vocational skills were imparted to the former snuffies during the 10-week-long training. He said peace and government writ were fully restored across the agency as the force had eliminated snuffies in the region.

Yaha Akhunzada hoped that the graduates would play a vital role in keeping peace in their respective areas.

The former snuffies on the occasion took oath that they would live peacefully and won't take part in any anti-social and anti-government activities in future. They also vowed to support the security forces and the administration in keeping writ of the government in the region.

[DAWN] KARACHI: A large number of lawyers on Tuesday staged a protest demonstration on M.A. Jinnah Road to mark the eighth anniversary of the May 12 carnage in Bloody Karachi

More than 45 people were killed and dozens others maimed on May 12, 2007 when the then deposed Chief Justice of Pakistain Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry arrived in Karachi to address a meeting of the Sindh High Court Bar Association on their golden jubilee while the Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
staged a rally to protest against the politicisation of the judge's suspension.

The lawyers also staged a sit-in on M.A. Jinnah Road where their leaders including presidents of the SHCBA and the Karachi Bar Association spoke.

They deplored that the authorities were still unable to arrest the culprits behind the May 12 mayhem and demanded their arrest.

Polio case detected in Charsadda as count rises to 23 this year
[DAWN] A new polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
case was confirmed on Tuesday from the Shabqadar Tehsil of Charsadda, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
(KP), where two-year-old Muhamad Rahem was dignosed with the virus, according to Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) officials in Charsadda.

With this case, the number of polio-affected patients detected in Pakistain this year has gone up to 23, of which 10 were reported from KP alone.

Sources said World Health Organisation (WHO) and EPI officials visited Rahem's home and questioned his parents on the child's condition. But EPI's provincial coordinator for KP-- Dr Taimur-- did not confirm the fresh polio case.

He did however say that so far in 2015, nine polio cases (excluding Rahem) have been registered in the province: five from Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
, two from Tank and one each in Lucky Marwat and Nowshehra.

Pakistain's fight against polio has in recent times been marred by faceless myrmidons who target vaccination teams, especially in the northern and tribal areas of the country, where bandidos bandidos hard boys have carved out hideouts for themselves.

Olde Tyme Religion
Iran: We Have 'Divine Permission to Destroy Israel'
An Iranian official closely tied to Iran's Supreme Leader says that the Iranian government has "divine permission to destroy Israel."
Permitted not being the same as required, of course...
Mojtaba Zolnour, who represents the Ayatollah Kahmenei in the Revolutionary Guards, said, "The (ahem) Noble Koran permits the Islamic Republic of Iran to destroy Israel," according to the Iranian news agency Fars.
Not to mention the latest Papal edict and agreement on Palestine.
Zolnour also made it clearthis is a goal of Iran whether or not it has nuclear weapons. "Even if Iran gives up its nuclear program, it will not weaken this country's determination to destroy Israel," he was quoted as saying by the Saudi news outlet Al Arabiya.

Sulu sultans, MNLF want out of Bangsamoro
[Rappler] On Wednesday, representatives of the Moro National Liberation Front and the sultanate of Sulu turned a Senate hearing on the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law into an opportunity to reiterate their staunch opposition to the proposed law.

The recurring sentiment of the representatives was that the envisioned Bangsamoro autonomous region is designed to benefit the Moro Islamic Liberation Front over other groups. Both groups said they felt excluded from the BBL, despite previous assurances from peace negotiators that the law is inclusive.

The MNLF warned that the provinces of Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Basilan -- three of the five provinces under the current Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao –- would vote against the BBL during the plebiscite.

While the Bangsamoro government does not prevent groups other than the MILF to participate in the government, the law is based on a peace pact that was the product of negotiations with a single group – the MILF. The MILF will also lead the transitional government, another concern for the MNLF.

The Sulu sultanate wants areas under the traditional jurisdiction of the monarchy, which includes the provinces of Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and Basilan, to be excluded from the Bangsamoro. They also objected to the provision appointing a Wali or a titular head of the Bangsamoro autonomous government since they still recognize the traditional sultans.

Obama Picks New Chiefs for U.S. Army, Navy
Is it me, or is there really more turnover at the top than usual?
[AnNahar] President Barack Obama
Republicans can come along for the ride, but they've got to sit in the back...
has chosen a submarine officer to serve as the next head of the U.S. Navy and an infantry officer who commanded troops in Afghanistan for army chief, officials said Wednesday.

Admiral John Richardson, currently the head of naval reactors, has been nominated to lead the navy, and General Mark Milley, who also served in Iraq, was picked to lead the army.

In announcing the nominations, Defense Secretary Ashton Carter praised Milley as "a warrior and a statesman" who had the intellect and battlefield experience to take the helm of the U.S. Army.

"Mark and I flew to Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
a day after an attack on the U.S. consulate there. And I saw Mark take command of the scene and stand with our people there," said the mealy-mouthed Carter, recounting a visit to Afghanistan.

"I was impressed by his candor and good judgement. And I knew right away that he had even more to offer to the United States Army."

Milley, a graduate of Princeton University, worked as head of the International Security Assistance Force's Joint Command in Afghanistan and was asked to review the delicate case of Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl, who was held captive by murderous Moslems in Afghanistan for five years.

After a methodical study of the case, Milley decided Bergdahl should be charged with desertion.

If confirmed by senators, Milley will succeed General Raymond Odierno, who is due to retire in the coming months.

Obama's pick for the navy is the second consecutive submarine officer to be named to the post, underscoring the importance attached to subs despite their exorbitant cost.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Richardson will face a budget battle over the funding of the next class of ballistic missile submarines, which cost an estimated $4.9 billion a piece.

To avoid disrupting other ship-building plans, officials have already suggested new submarines will need to be paid for partly outside of the annual Pentagon budget and will need a special long-term funding plan.

Carter called Richardson "a bold thinker, a tremendous leader and the go-to officer for many of the Navy's tough issues in recent years."

As head of the navy's nuclear propulsion program, Richardson faced questions last year about an alleged cheating scandal among sailors training on reactors.

The current head of the navy, Admiral Jonathan Greenert, is due to retire later this year.

#1  Is it me, or is there really more turnover at the top than usual?

I dunno, TW...I think in this case it's just regular expiration-of-term. GEN Odierno's been Army CoS for almost exactly 4 years. ADM Greenert's about 4 months shy of exactly 4 years as CNO, so that might make one go "Hmmm." OTOH, Greenert's been a faithful follower of the PC-uber-alles gospel emanating from the White House, so the early announcement may be due to something else.

That being said...IMHO, a general or flag officer's willingness to serve the creature currently infesting the Oval Office casts doubt on their fitness for high command.

#6  Ugh "A quick look at Wikipedia shows that the Joint Chiefs have all served roughly 4 years in the position, which has been the general pattern for decades, so it doesn't look like there is more turnover then usual." Mods please delete my prior post
Deleted just after the rollover, so at least it didn't make it into the archives.
