Iran detains 5 in Saudi nationals' poisoning case in Mashhad
[Iran Press TV] Iran detains five people over the recent death in the northeastern Iranian city of Mashhad of four Saudi pilgrims due to poisoning, Judiciary Spokesman Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei says.

Addressing news hounds in a presser in Tehran on Monday, Mohseni-Ejei said a special inspector has looked into the incident and carried out necessary measures.

"In total, 24 people were poisoned, a number of whom were discharged [from hospital] after receiving treatment and some others are also under treatment. Four people also bit the dust," he added.

Nekkid Europeans cause deadly Malasian earthquake.
Follow up on this from the other day. Those Malaysians are moving fast on this thing.
[Malaymail online] KUNDASANG, June 6 -- The earthquake that has so far claimed 11 lives here was caused by the sacrilegious act of a group of Europeans who stripped naked on the peak of Mount Kinabalu, according to Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan. The Huguon Siou (paramount leader of the Kadazandusun) condemned the "uncivilised" and disrespectful actions of the 10 Europeans, and called for the culprits to be brought to a native court and charged according to local customs. "Whether other people believe this or not, it's what we Sabahans believe.

When the earthquake happened, it's like a confirmation of our beliefs. "It is a sacred mountain and you cannot take it lightly," he said in a press conference to announce the latest death toll at the Sabah Parks headquarters here today. Locals who live at the foothills of Mount Kinabalu here believe that the mountain is sacred and carries the spirit of their ancestors.

Eleven people sentenced to DEATH following deadly riot at football match in Egypt
[MIRROR.CO.UK] Eleven people have had their death sentences upheld for their part in the worst fan violence in Egyptian football history.

More than 70 fans were killed and over 1,000 injured following a fracas between supporters at the Port Said stadium in 2012.

Many of the dead were crushed when panicked fans tried to escape from the stadium after a post-match pitch invasion by supporters of the local side al-Masry. Others fell or were thrown from terraces, witnesses said at the time.

UN rights chief alarmed by violence in Burundi
[Iran Press TV] A top UN official has voiced alarm over reports of violence in Burundi, warning that purported coercive methods used by a pro-government militia in the country threaten its stability.

The militia known as Imbonerakure, the youth wing of the ruling CNDD-FDD party, has reportedly committed numerous acts of violence in support of President Pierre Nkurunziza, whose announcement in late April to seek a third consecutive term in office plunged the country into chaos.

"They could tip an already extremely tense situation over the edge," the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
chief, Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein, said in a statement on Tuesday, referring to the alleged violent acts.

The UN official said the group commits such purported violent acts as "summary executions, abductions, torture, beatings, death threats and other forms of intimidation, according to testimony gathered from 47 Burundian refugees in camps in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
."

"Imbonerakure members operate under instructions from the ruling party and with support of the national police and intelligence services, who provide them with weapons, vehicles and sometimes uniforms," Zeid said.

"If these claims are even partially true, they indicate an extremely dangerous effort to escalate fear and tension," he warned.

Zeid insisted that it was upon Burundian authorities to show their commitment to law and order by openly denouncing the militia group and holding criminals and violators of human rights accountable for their acts.

Three beheaded in Saudi Arabia
[Al Ahram] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
on Tuesday beheaded a Syrian narco and two Saudis convicted of murder, despite concerns raised by rights' experts that trials are not conducted fairly in the kingdom.

Their cases bring to 97 the number of executions of locals and foreigners carried out in the conservative Moslem kingdom this year.

That compares with 87 for all of 2014, according to AFP tallies.

The Syrian, Mohammed Hussein Abdulkareem Halwani, was executed in Jubail, on the kingdom's Gulf coast, after a court found him guilty of smuggling methamphetamines, the interior ministry said.

The ministry, in statements carried by the official Saudi Press Agency, named the two Saudis executed as Hussein al-Qahtani and Jibran al-Qahtani.

They were convicted of separate murders with firearms and were put to death in Abha, in Asir region, the ministry said.

Bangladesh
Bangladesh urged to end child marriage epidemic: HRW
[Al Ahram] Bangladesh must step up efforts to halt an "epidemic" of child marriage throughout the country where nearly one third of girls wed before they turn 15, a rights group said Tuesday.

Although Bangladesh has cut poverty levels in recent years, numbers of child marriages remain huge, partly because of regular natural disasters that force already struggling families into greater desperation, Human Rights Watch
... During the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, HRW received a pledge from the Foundation to Promote Open Society, of which George Soros is Chairman, for general support totaling $100,000,000. The grant is being paid in installments of $10,000,000 over ten years.Through June 30, 2013, HRW had received $30,000,000 towards the fulfillment of the pledge....
said.

The campaign group urged Bangladesh's government to abandon a proposal to lower the legal age for marriage for girls from 18 to 16, a move it said would only fuel the crisis.

"It will send the message to the parents that child marriage is okay. The government should act before another generation of girls is lost," Heather Barr, author of a HRW report, told news hounds in Dhaka.

Barr also called on Prime Minister the loathesome Sheikh Hasina
...Bangla dynastic politician and current Prime Minister of Bangladesh. She has been the President of the Bangla Awami League since the Lower Paleolithic. She is the eldest of five children of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding father of Bangla. Her party defeated the BNP-led Four-Party Alliance in the 2008 parliamentary elections. She has once before held the office, from 1996 to 2001, when she was defeated in a landslide. She and the head of the BNP, Khaleda Zia show such blind animosity toward each other that they are known as the Battling Begums..
to "follow through" on commitments she made at a global summit last year in London on the issue to stop girls as young as 10 marrying.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Finnish defense official: Russia has 'twofold objectives' in the Arctic
[Bus Insider] Moscow has made no secret of its interest in positioning itself as the paramount military power in the Arctic in recent months.

As the Kremlin looks to take advantage of the potential bounties of the far north as the Arctic melts, its neighbors are paying attention.

Russia has "twofold objectives" in the Arctic, a senior official in the Finnish Defense Ministry told The Wall Street Journal.

The first is to "secure the Northern Sea Route and [exploit] the energy-resources potential," while the second is to increase "their ability to surveil that part of the world, to refurbish their abilities for the air force and the Northern Fleet."

He added that Russian military planners are "exercising their ability to move their airborne troops from the central part of Russia to the north."

The allure of being a commanding actor in the Arctic is obvious. By 2030, the WSJ notes, the Northern Sea Route will be passable by ships nine months a year. The route could cut down travel time between Europe and East Asia by as much as 60% while compared to current routes through the Panama or Suez Canals.

Additionally, the US estimates that a significant proportion of the Earth's untapped petroleum -- including about 15% of the world's remaining oil, up to 30% of its natural gas deposits, and about 20% of its liquefied natural gas -- are stored in the Arctic seabed.

Fighting continues in key regions of Ukraine

A week after the fighting in Marinka concluded, exchanges of heavy gunfire continue in Marinka, Donetsk city and other regions of Donetsk, according to Russian language news accounts.

Lt. Colonel Eduard Basurin, spokesman for the Donetsk ministry of defense said that an Ukrainian armed group consisting of light infantry and BMP-2 infantry fighting vehicles launched an attack on a key height between Shumy and Mayorska near Gorlovka, which is about 20 kilometers north of Donetsk city, this after an hour long artillery attack Monday afternoon.

Basurin said that the Ukrainian forces lost two BMP-2s and 13 killed in action after a 90 minute battle. Ultimately, the attack failed.

Gorlovka has been under Ukrainian artillery fire since early February, since, according to the Ukrainians, rebel forces attempted to take the highway leading to western Gorlovka.

Gorlovka was shelled Tuesday by Ukrainian artillery, according to a subsequent statement by Basurin. Basurin suggested that the attack was in preparation for a general offensive by Ukrainian military forces.

Areas in or near Gorlovka affected by the shelling included the village of Komarovo, and the Komsomolets residential sector near Basardina and Shashurin streets. Two civilians were wounded in the artillery fire and five homes were destroyed, according to Basurin.

Marinka

Rebel and Ukrainian forces continue direct fire and artillery fire on their respective positions in Markinka Tuesday.

According to a news account in regum.ru, Ukrainian defense ministry spokesman Colonel Andrei Lysenko said that fighting began in Marinka at around 0900 hours as rebel forces fired on Ukrainian positions.

Commander of the Ukrainian Kiev-1 volunteer battalion, Yevgeny Dade was quoted, saying that fighting between forces is "point blank" with the rebels using tanks and mortars, which confirms what rebel commanders have been saying since last week. The ranges in the battle are about 200 meters between positions, point blank by modern standards.

According to military journalist Dmitri Tymchuk, the offensive in Marinka was ordered by Donetsk president Aleksandr Zakharchenko after he and his staff were alerted that a Russian Army general was ordered to Donetsk city to affect the arrest of Zakharchenko for embezzlement of Russian-provided aid.

According to Tymchuk, the general was identified with the call sign "Berkut" with "the last name of Sokolovskiy or Sokolov." Following the meeting, Zakharcheko ordered the attack as a means of redeeming himself with the Russians.

The report, if true, shows an amazing amount of conflict between rebel leaders and their Russian benefactors, and how independent rebel leaders have been from the Russians supplying them.

In a separate report, Tymchuk made a startling admission of just how closely Ukrainian president Piotr Poroshenko controls military operations against rebel controlled areas of southeastern Ukraine, when he said that changes in how the Ukrainian forces are fighting includes being allowed to use all the artillery available to them, and how quickly artillery counterfire can now be ordered.

Tymchuk's latest report is that rebel are using small arms, automatic grenade launcher and RPG (antitank rocket launcher) fire on Ukrainian positions.

Tymchuk said that the rebels' original plan for Marinka, was to seize the Kurakhovskaya thermal power station, using two reinforced mechanized rifle battalions and a tank group. Some of these forces had been moved up during the Victory Day celebrations.

Current Ukrainian reports are admitting as of Tuesday night for the first time that rebels control at least some parts of Marinka.

Donetsk city

In Donetsk city, according to official rebel reports, Ukrainian artillery hit targets Monday in Kuibyshevskiy region of the city, around Kremlin Prospekt, and Artemovskaya, Czechoslovakia and Kurchatov streets. Ukrainian artillery also hit Putilovsky bridge. The report said Ukrainian used 120mm mortar and 152mm artillery fire. As to damage, the report said a warehouse with "paints and varnish" was set afire.

A report from regunum.ru said a total of eight residences were damaged as well as the railway station.

Ukrainian artillery also hit targets in the Leninsky, Kievskiy and Patrovskiy district. Spartak was also struck with artillery.

Ukrainian reports are that rebel artillery hit targets in Peski, Opytnoye and at the Butovka mine, using 120mm mortar fire and 122mm tube artillery fire.

Tymchuk said that rebel artillery in the form of 82mm mortar fire and 122mm artillery fire hit targets in Avdievka as well on Tuesday.

Pro Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin said Tuesday that fighting has intensified in the airport region including artillery fire in conjunction with the renewed artillery fire. Since last February, Ukrainian troops have been clinging on to a small part of the airport grounds. Few reports emerged since that time of any fighting other than small arms exchanges until Tuesday.

President Poroshenko has pledged in the recent past to retake the airport from the rebels. The airport fell to the rebels in February.

Shirokino

Fighting continued Monday in Shirokino, near the Sea of Azov, as Ukrainian Russian language reports say artillery fire between rebel forces operating in the eastern end of the village and members of the Ukrainian Azov battalion on the western side, hit respective targets.

According to Ukrainian reports, Ukrainian artillery fire struck an ammunition depot and rebel troops in Shirokino. The same report said that rebels used 82mm mortars and automatic grenade launchers in their attacks.

Tymchuk said that the rebels used 120mm mortar fire on Ukrainian targets on Tuesday.

'Overstretched' Russian air force suffers three jet crashes in five days
[Newsweek] A Russian air force TU-95s "Bear" bomber has ignited while on a practice flight, in the third crash of a Russian jet in the last five days, prompting concern that the Kremlin might be overexerting the armed forces to display military might.

In the past year, Russia has increased the number of armed forces drills and practises in response to worsening diplomatic relations with the West over the war in Ukraine. Its air force has dramatically increased the number of unannounced patrol flights near European territory, as states such as the Baltics and Great Britain have been repeatedly forced to escort Russian jets away from their airspace.

Now the same model of jet which Russia flew off the coast of Bournemouth in January, prompting an RAF scramble, has skidded off a runway at a military practice base in Russia's Siberian Amurskaya region after a fire ignited in its engine during training flights, Russian news agency Interfax reported last night. The TU-95s which was involved in the accident flew without missiles on board.

Sea Shepherd to pay damages to Japanese whalers
Trying to "Save the World" may have its rewards, but they come with a cost
Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd has agreed to pay damages to Japanese whalers for violating a US court injunction and continuing to disturb their research whaling in the Antarctic Ocean.

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed the US-headquartered group's appeal. The justices upheld a lower court decision that found Sea Shepherd violated a 2012 court injunction, and ordered the conservation organization to pay damages.

Sea Shepherd agreed to pay 2.55 million dollars to the plaintiffs including the Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research.

The plaintiffs filed a lawsuit in 2011 with a US federal district court. They sought to stop the hardline marine-life conservation group from obstructing Japanese research whaling in the Antarctic Ocean.

Last December, the US Court of Appeals in San Francisco said Sea Shepherd violated a provisional injunction banning the group from disturbing Japanese whalers. It ordered the group to pay damages. The Supreme Court dismissed Sea Shepherd's appeal.

Better to equip your ship with amplifiers and project the sounds of whatever might drive the whales away and then just peacefully follow the 'research' vessel. Maybe that wouldn't be glorious and it would certainly make for dull tv but do they want to save the whales or just slap each other on the back about how brave they are?

Philippines, Japan to Hold Fresh Naval Drills
Consequences.
[AnNahar] The Philippines and Japan will hold fresh joint naval drills this month, the Filipino military said Tuesday, as the World War II foes swiftly ramp up security ties while China develops islands in disputed waters.

The June 22-26 joint maneuvers with the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force would be only the second ever, after an unprecedented one-day exercise in the flashpoint South China Sea last month, Philippine navy front man Colonel Edgard Arevalo said.

He would not say where the new exercises would be held or which ships would take part.

But Japanese media, quoting unnmamed official sources, suggested the second maneuvers will also take place on the South China Sea.

On May 12, two Japanese destroyers and one of the Philippines' newest warships held historic maneuvers less than 300 kilometers (168 miles) from the Philippine-claimed Scarborough Shoal, which is now under Chinese control.

"This navy-to-navy engagement envisions to share new tactics, techniques and procedures as well as best practices to further maritime operations," Arevalo said, referring to the planned drills.

These will involve "maritime domain awareness", search and rescue, and disaster response, he said.

Philippine President Benigno Aquino and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced in Tokyo last week that the two governments would start negotiations for the transfer of defense technology and equipment.

The agreement may include the export of Japanese hardware to the Philippines, including anti-submarine reconnaissance aircraft and radar technology.

The two leaders also expressed "serious concern" over China's construction of artificial islands in the South China Sea, which they said violated a 2002 regional agreement.

Aquino, who was making a state visit to Tokyo, also drew parallels between China's recent actions and Nazi Germany's creeping invasion of Europe just before World War II.

Aquino is one of China's most outspoken critics in the region. His government has asked a United Nations
...where theory meets practice and practice loses...
-backed tribunal to rule on its territorial disputes with China.

China's claim over almost the entire South China Sea overlaps with those of the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei.

China and Japan are separately embroiled in a longstanding dispute over a Japan-controlled island chain in the East China Sea.

#1  At last check, CHINA has repor criticized both Japan + G-7 for their seemingly Anti-China = China-centric declaration agz any and all island reclamation activities in either the SCS + ECS + IOR, wid China making clear its belief that no other countries have the right to interfere in China's affairs in these regions.

#2  Yep, that guard dog barked at night, crapped all over the place, and was mangy with fleas. Good thing you got rid of it. Certainly taught that running dog oppressive capitalist colonialist Yankee a lesson didn't they. So long, thanks for all the fish.

Europe
Rainbow flag compared to swastika
h/t Gates of Vienna
Morgan Emgardsson, who is a councillor for the centre-right Christian Democrat party in the city of Västerüs, rejected a motion by the City Council to fly a rainbow flag to mark the city's gay pride festival, saying that if the flag was approved then the Nazi flag should also be allowed.

Emgardsson then attempted to clarify his position, saying: "I just wanted to say that if we allow the disclosure of an organization's flag, then we must allow others. The municipality should just have the Swedish flag and its own flag."

#2  Those marching with the rainbow flag might be annoying, strident, shrill, and pushy. PC and guilt are their main weapons--more recently they have discovered favor in the courts. Hitler did have a coterie that included many in-the-closet homosexuals but at the same time, gays in Germany were persecuted and executed by the Nazis. IMO that gays today are not even close to the Nazis. I don't think there is much of a comparison. Gays in Nazi Germany." William Shirer's tome the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich is a reasonably good history.

#3  -more recently they have discovered favor in the courts.

Had this little tome during college to read. Among other themes in it, were the actions of the courts who acted against the Wiemar republic seeking to undermine it and sympathized with the anti-government movements.

#4  JohnQC, I don't think he was making the comparison so much as saying if we put up one flag we need to put up other flags. Most slippery slope arguments end up with Nazi's or communists so he jumped directly to save time.

So basically put up the rainbow flag but be prepared for the other requests when the floodgates open. It's much easier to just dodge the issue.

India-Pakistan
India arrests justice minister over 'fake degree'
[Iran Press TV] Police in India have tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rod and step away witcher hands up!
a New Delhi state minister following a complaint from the Bar Council of Delhi that the minister's degree in law is fake.
No one ever saw him attend class? No record of grades or attendance? Conflicting data on registration, passport, visa status, and tuition grants? Could have simply revoked his law license. Sounds a bit harsh, even racist.
State Minister of Law and Justice Jitendra Singh Tomar appeared in court on Tuesday to be formally charged for forgery. The Delhi High Court later sent Tomar on a four-day police remand.

Delhi police front man Rajan Bhagat said, "Based on the investigations and prima facie evidence, a case was filed against Tomar and he was arrested for cheating, forgery and criminal conspiracy."

Prior to Tomar's arrest, on May 27, 2015, the university where the minister studied law, the Institute of Legal Studies in Munger, filed an affidavit before the Delhi High Court, claiming that Tomar was a "bona fide student" and submitted attested copies of his admission register and marksheets bearing Tomar's name.

Minister Tomar, himself, has denied the charges against him, and instead, accuses the country's ruling party of meddling in the affairs of the local Delhi government.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Champ's ex-DIA intel chief blasts Iran talks in scathing testimony
[Fox] A former top military intelligence official under President Obama on Wednesday blasted the administration's pursuit of a nuclear deal with Iran, calling it a "placeholder" based on "wishful thinking."

Retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, former head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, delivered pointed and detailed criticism of the Iran deal framework -- as well as the U.S. response to the violence in Iraq and Syria.

"It is clear that the nuclear deal is not a permanent fix but merely a placeholder," he told a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee.

In written and delivered testimony, he said the 10-year timeframe on parts of the deal "only [makes] sense" if the U.S. thinks a "wider reconciliation" with Iran is possible. He called this "wishful thinking," adding that "regime change" is the best way to stop Iran's nuclear weapons program.

Flynn also asserted that Iran has "every intention" of building a nuclear weapon, and their desire to destroy Israel is "very real."

"Iran has not once (not once) contributed to the greater good of the security of the region," he said, noting their fighters "killed or maimed thousands of Americans and Iraqis" in Iraq.

The administration is working alongside five other world powers to try and strike a nuclear deal -- which would aim to curb Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief -- by the end of the month. But Flynn said Iran already has made it clear they will put limits on inspections, making for "incomplete verification." Plus he said it's "unreasonable" to believe international sanctions could be resumed once lifted.

He also echoed concerns of some other analysts in saying the "perceived acceptance" of Iran's program will likely "touch off a dangerous domino effect in the region" as Saudi Arabia and other nations seek nuclear capability.

As for the rising threat posed by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, Flynn voiced concern that the U.S. is not keeping up with the crisis. He said there is "absolutely no end in sight," and "no clear U.S. policy" for dealing with it.
I would love to see this fellow get nominated to backfill Brennan under the next administration.

Army Gen. Randy Taylor introduces his husband at Pentagon Gay Pride event
