Ethiopia, TPLF discuss ceasefire implementation
[AFRICANEWS] Æthiopia and representatives from the regional state of Tigray held talks on Monday aimed at resolving the lingering issues about the implementation of a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2022.

The deal signed in Pretoria, South Africa helped end more than two years of deadly fighting.

Under the accord, the Tigray Peoples Liberation Front (TPLF) agreed to disarm, demobilize and to hand over heavy weapons to the federal army.

Æthiopia would in exchange scale up the provision of humanitarian assistance, remove the presence of foreign forces and fund the reconstruction of war affected areas.

But Tigray's leaders have accused Addis Ababa of reneging on the deal and refusing to implement key clauses of the understanding brokered by the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo and Kenya's Uhuru Kenyatta are mediating the talks.

Fighting started in 2020 when TPLF fighters attacked federal troops stationed in Tigray, killing soldiers and stealing weapons.

Libyan leaders agree to form unified govt that will supervise elections
[insert definition of insanity here]
[AFRICANEWS] Representatives of Libya's rival administrations have pledged to form a unified government.

The Head of the country's Presidential Council, the Speaker of the eastern based House of Representatives, and the Head of the western based High Council of State met Sunday (Mar. 10) in Cairo, Egypt.

The meeting was convened by the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
Secretary-General.

"The attendees agreed on the following: first, emphasising on the illusory sovereignty, independence and the unity of the Libyan soil and the rejection of any foreign intervention the affects the Libyan political process negatively," Ahmed Aboul Gheit said.

"Second, considering the political agreement and what follows it, a technical committee will be formed within a given timeframe to look into the proper amendments that expand the base of consensus in the work that was executed by the 6+6 committee, and to finalise the unsettled matters regarding the points of disagreement in accordance to the legislations in force."

Rwanda's President agrees to meet Felix Tshisekedi over eastern Congo crisis
[AFRICANEWS] Rwanda's President, Paul Kagame, has confirmed his readiness to engage in talks with Felix Tshisekedi, President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
(DRC), in order to tackle the ongoing crisis in eastern Congo. This announcement follows mediation efforts led by the Angolan government, with President João Lourenco serving as the African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
's mediator in the DR Congo crisis.

The agreement was reached after a meeting held in Luanda, Angola's capital, between President Kagame and President Lourenco. Angola's Foreign Minister, Tete Antonio, informed the press that President Kagame had agreed to meet President Tshisekedi at a time to be determined by the mediator.

Minister Antonio further revealed that both Rwanda and the DR Congo had consented to the meeting, with ministerial delegations from both countries actively working towards facilitating the dialogue.

Rwanda's presidency released a statement, indicating that both leaders had "agreed on key steps towards addressing the root causes of the conflict," signaling a potential breakthrough in resolving the crisis.

This development comes in the wake of escalating tensions in eastern DR Congo, where festivities between M23 rebels and Congolese forces have resulted in the displacement of over 100,000 people, according to reports from the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
prior to this agreement, President Tshisekedi had demanded the withdrawal of Rwandan troops from Congolese territory as a precondition for the meeting, a condition that Rwanda vehemently denies.

President Kagame's willingness to engage in dialogue underscores the importance of regional cooperation in addressing the complex challenges facing the Great Lakes region.

Accusations of Rwandan support for M23 rebels have further complicated the situation, with Kigali vehemently denying any involvement in the conflict. The upcoming meeting presents an opportunity for both countries to address these allegations and explore avenues for constructive collaboration in resolving the crisis.

Prime minister Ariel Henry resigns amidst Haiti's crisis
[AFRICANEWS] Haiti faces escalating turmoil as criminal gangs tighten their grip on Port-au-Prince, controlling up to 90% of the capital. In the midst of this chaos, Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned, signaling a significant development in the country's fraught political landscape.

The move follows a gathering of Caribbean nations, UN representatives, and delegates from countries like France and the United States in Jamaica, aiming to find a solution to Haiti's pressing issues. However, Henry found himself stranded in Puerto Rico, unable to return to Port-au-Prince, where he engaged with Caricom members remotely.

Haiti's political landscape has been marred by instability since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, with no subsequent elections held since 2016. Henry, appointed by Moïse, was slated to step down in early February, further exacerbating the leadership vacuum.

Despite efforts to address the crisis, including Henry's agreement in Nairobi to deploy Kenyan police officers to Haiti, the situation remains precarious. Diplomatic discussions in Kingston sought to formalize a proposal urging Henry to transfer power to a transitional council representative of Haitian civil society.

In a statement prior to his resignation, Henry affirmed the government's commitment to establishing a transitional presidential council, highlighting plans for members to be selected in consultation with various sectors of national life.

Chile bars Israeli firms from taking part in Latin America’s biggest aerospace fair
Those who want Israeli things will just contact directly. I can’t imagine the Santiago fair is the only one in the world, and in the 21st century flying halfway round the world isn’t much more expensive or time-consuming that staying within the region.
[IsraelTimes] Chile says it will exclude Israeli firms from Latin America’s biggest aerospace fair, to be held in Santiago in April.

"By decision of the Government of Chile, the 2024 version of the International Air and Space Fair (FIDAE), to be held between 9 and 14 April, will not have the participation of Israeli companies," a defense ministry statement says.

It doesn’t give a reason, but the government of leftist President Gabriel Boric has been critical of what he has called Israel’s "disproportionate" response to the October 7 attack by Hamas

Israel’s Ambassador in Chile Gil Artzyeli tells AFP he hasn’t been contacted by the government with the FIDAE news.

US announces $100M for deployment of multinational force to violence-stricken Haiti
[FoxNews] The deployment of a multinational force to Haiti with a price tag of $100 million was announced by Secretary of State Antony Blinken following a meeting with Caribbean leaders in Jamaica on Monday.

Blinken also announced another $33 million in humanitarian aid and the creation of a joint proposal agreed on by Caribbean leaders and "all of the Haitian stakeholders to expedite a political transition" and create a "presidential college," according to the Associated Press.

The meeting in Jamaica was organized by members of a regional trade bloc known as Caricom, which for months has pressed for a transitional government in Haiti while protests in the country have demanded Prime Minister Ariel Henry’s resignation. Henry said Tuesday that he would step down after a transitional presidential council is established.

In Ingushetia, food price increases will be curbed during Ramadan
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Regnum] The head of Ingushetia, Mahmud-Ali Kalimatov, gave orders to control the rise in food prices during Ramadan.
Giving them bread, if not circuses.
This year, the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which includes fasting, falls from March 10 to April 9. One of the steps in containing prices was the signing of a memorandum on limiting the trade margin on chicken eggs, the rise in price of which Russian President Vladimir Putin drew attention to back in December, to 10%. In addition, the regional Ministry of Industry and Digital Development, together with the Rospotrebnadzor department and representatives of local governments, will monitor food prices every day in order to detect facts of their unjustified increase.

Municipal authorities received a recommendation to establish a markup of 10% on the selling price for socially significant goods, as well as to organize discounts on relevant products.

The head of Ingushetia, Mahmud-Ali Kalimatov, spoke about food prices during Ramadan, noting that during this period, when Muslim believers must fast, people are especially inclined to pay attention to rising prices and worry about it. Now, as the head of the subject stated, no episodes of unjustified price increases or facts of reduction in the range of products presented in retail outlets have been identified.

At the moment, in Ingushetia, the markup on products in retail outlets varies on average within 10–20% of the purchase price. In addition to the measures listed above designed to help reduce prices, Mahmud-Ali Kalimatov gave instructions to hold food fairs during Ramadan. They will be held every week on Saturdays throughout the holy month in populated areas of the republic. At the fairs, residents of the region will be able to purchase products from local producers at prices below market prices. The first such fair is scheduled for March 15.

Mahmud-Ali Kalimatov drew attention to the fact that fairs are in demand not only among guests and residents of Ingushetia. Manufacturers are also interested in them, because they have the opportunity to sell their products without intermediaries. The head of the republic sees the task of the authorities primarily as meeting the needs of the domestic market at the expense of local producers.

and Israel’s war on the Gazook terror organization.

"While it is too early to tell, both al-Qaeda and ISIS, inspired by Hamas, have directed supporters to conduct attacks against Israeli and US interests," Haines testifies to the Senate Select Intelligence Committee. "And we have seen how it is inspiring individuals to conduct acts of antisemitism and Islamophobic terror worldwide."

She says that "it is likely that the Gazoo

Progressive groups unite to counter pro-Israel Democratic primary candidates
[IsraelTimes] Jewish, Arab and Moslem organizations form Reject AIPAC to counter pro-Israel groups’ strategy of funding incumbent anti-Zionists’ challengers.

Facing a barrage of super PAC money, more than 20 progressive groups are coming together to forcefully counter pro-Israel groups’ efforts to mount a primary challenge to liberal members who have been critics of Israel’s blistering military offensive in Gazoo
...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. It is currently ruled with an iron fist by Hamas with about the living conditions you'd expect. It periodically attacks the Hated Zionist Entity whenever Iran needs a ruckus created or the hard boyz get bored, getting thumped by the IDF in return. The ruling turbans then wave the bloody shirt and holler loudly about oppression and disproportionate response...
The coalition, called Reject AIPAC, includes Jewish anti-Zionist organizations and Arab American and Moslem groups that have been organizing in record numbers since the Israel-Hamas
...not a terrorist organization, even though it kidnaps people, holds hostages, and tries to negotiate by executing them,...
war began in October.

Their efforts are a direct response to pro-Israel political action committees like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, better known as AIPAC, that are pledging or planning to spend tens of millions of dollars to try to defeat Democratic members of the so-called "squad" in primaries and the general election this year. Th AIPAC campaign has turned the otherwise safely Democratic districts into election battlegrounds.

"These are a handful of Black and brown progressive incumbents who are under attack from a threat of $100 million in spending and usually Democratic leadership and establishment is up in arms anytime someone primaries an incumbent," said Osamah Andrabi, communications director for Justice Democrats, one of the groups leading the coalition. "But the energy is a little lighter when it comes to some of these progressives and so we are coming together to ensure that they have the resources to defend themselves against AIPAC."

The strategy, according to Andrabi, is to link up the grassroots organizations behind a seven-figure "electoral defense campaign" that aims to not only protect members of Congress being targeted by AIPAC but also to bring light to what they see as the group’s divergence from the longstanding values of the Democratic Party
...every time you hear the phrase white people, white supremacy, white anything but paint, you're listening to a Democrat. Ask him/her/it to reimagine something for you; they do that a lot, though not well. They can hear a dog whistle a mile or two away. They invented the spoils system and Tammany Hall, and inspired the addition of the word (Thomas) Nasty to the English language. They want to stop continental drift and repeal the law of unintended side effects...
AIPAC has defended its track record, telling The News Agency that Dare Not be Named last month that "it is entirely consistent with progressive values to stand with the Jewish state" and that the group has a history of supporting members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Nonetheless, the coalition’s lobbying effort will focus on promoting pro-Paleostinian members and candidates as well as highlighting national polling that shows that the majority of Democratic voters are aligned with their stances, including increasing calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and conditioning US aid to Israel as the number of casualties rises above 30,000 Paleostinians in the five months of war, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in the Strip.

Those figures cannot be independently verified, and are believed to include both civilians and Hamas members killed in Gaza, including as a consequence of terror groups’ own rocket misfires. The IDF says it has killed over 13,000 terror operatives in Gaza since the war started, in addition to some 1,000 snuffies inside Israel on October 7.

Israel’s air and ground offensive has also driven most Paleostinians from their homes and pushed one-quarter of the population toward starvation.

In Congress, the war has driven a familiar wedge between Democrats, with even some politicians aligned with AIPAC declining to discuss the dynamics on the record.

Part of the strategy of the new coalition is to force those fissures into the open by requiring any candidate or member aligned with them to sign a pledge, outright rejecting any campaign money from groups like AIPAC, which has historically yielded immense clout in Washington.

This comes as AIPAC shifted in its own strategy in the last several years, transitioning from strictly a lobbying organization to helping elect centrist, pro-Israel Democrats. In 2022, it began challenging Democratic incumbents in primaries.

Before November, the group and PACs connected to its ethos have once again begun contributing to candidates running against members of the squad. The Democrats facing challengers include Jamaal Firebug Bowman
...sleazy Dem politician and educator, U.S. representative for New York's safe 16th congressional district since 2021. On September 30, 2023, while House Dems were desperately attempting to delay a vote that avoided shutting the government down so they could blame it on the Pubs, Bowman pulled a fire alarm in the Cannon House Office Building, causing the building to be evacuated. Bowman told reporters he thought it was a doorknob or something. Capitol Police released a statement saying they were investigating the fire alarm incident, and maybe a few rubes somewhere expected something to come of it. Republicans introduced a motion to expel Bowman from the House but that evaporated too. Bowman issued a statement saying they were Nazis. Bowman is a member of The Squad, a faction of like-minded subversives...
of New York, Ilhan Omar
...Somali-American Dem representative from Minnesota. She was apparently married to her brother and may be her own grandmaw on her mother's side. She is a member of The Squad, and would like to make the country look a lot more like Mogadishu...
of Minnesota, Summer Lee of Pennsylvania, and Cori Bush
...politician, nurse, pastor, and Black Lives Matter activist serving as the U.S. representative for Missouri's 1st congressional district, since 2021, and probably all years after that until she dies. The district includes all of the city of St. Louis and most of northern St. Louis County. There are few normal people to be found there. Soon after being sworn in, Bush joined The Squad, a group of Socialist Dem lawmakers intent on wrecking the country. She posted a photo on Twitter of herself, the four original Squad members, and another new member, Jamaal Fire Alarm Bowman, with the caption "Squad up."...
of Missouri, all of whom have not only called for a ceasefire but have demanded an end to US aid to Israel.

In 2022, AIPAC spent around $27 million targeting progressive candidates. Its war chest this cycle is expected to be more than twice that amount.

"We will never be at parity and that’s the reality of this," Andrabi said. "This has always been a David vs. Goliath conflict and it will continue to be but the most we can do is organize now in a concerted way and take them on head-on in a way that folks haven’t in past cycles."

The statement came after Khan, a former prime minister imprisoned in several cases and serving more than three decades, was barred from holding meetings inside Rawalpindi's Adiala jail for two weeks owing to security concerns.

"This move wasn’t made to take away any facility from him [Khan]. There is a serious threat alert, which is under investigation," Punjab’s Information Minister Azma Bukhari told Geo News’ Shahzeb Khanzada.

Bukhari, who recently assumed office after her party, Pakistain Moslem League-Nawaz, an arch rival of the PTI, came into power, said her party was not seeking Dire Revenge from the former prime minister.

She said the fresh restrictions were imposed, as a few days back, the law enforcers had arrested bandidos forces of Evil who possessed a map of the jail in which Khan is currently imprisoned.

Last week, the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) claimed to have arrested three terrorists, allegedly belonging to Afghanistan, who had a map of Adiala Jail, a hand grenade, and Improvised Explosive Devices.

"The incident is under investigation. A series of threat alerts have been issued. These measures were taken to ensure the security of all the prisoners. The security of the facility has to be improved," she said.

As first ship sails, Israel to inspect all aid from Cyprus; aid groups will distribute
[IsraelTimes] Official says increasing humanitarian aid to Gazans is crucial for international legitimacy during war; IDF to ensure no attacks or looting at new jetty built to accept goods

Israel has been working for three months on bringing aid to Gazoo

from Cyprus by ship, a senior Israeli official told The Times of Israel on Monday night, hours before a vessel inaugurating the sea route set sail from Larnaca.

The official said that Israel understood early on that it needs international legitimacy to prosecute the campaign against Hamas
...not a terrorist organization, even though it kidnaps people, holds hostages, and tries to negotiate by executing them,...
, and that "international legitimacy is mainly the humanitarian issue."

Gaza has been facing a mounting humanitarian crisis since the war erupted with Hamas’s October 7 onslaught, which saw thousands of Hamas snuffies burst into Israel, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping another 253, mostly civilians, amid horrific acts of brutality and sexual assault.

The humanitarian situation in Gaza has been the focus of international criticism of Israel’s war effort, including from the White House. According to anonymous US officials speaking to Politico, US President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. ‘This Is A Man ThatDoes Not Seem Demented’...
has considered placing conditions on military aid to Israel if it launches a widespread ground offensive in the southern Gaza city Rafah, where over a million internally displaced Paleostinians are sheltering.

Sea routes were an attractive option for Israel because they allow aid to be delivered to Gaza without requiring land crossings from Israel, helping to sever links to the Strip, said the official.

"There was one condition — that everything is inspected, supervised, that we control it," said the official. "That we can say from a security perspective, all sorts of things that we don’t want are not coming in."

Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides offered the use of his country’s port in Larnaca months ago for a sea route for aid deliveries to Gaza, a 230-mile (370-kilometer) journey.

Cyprus invited authorities from Israel, the US and other European countries to join Cypriot agents in vetting all shipments so nothing could be used by Hamas against Israel. The offer received strong interest from the Americans, Europeans and others, and extended planning followed.

Representatives from the Foreign Ministry and COGAT flew to Larnaca to examine the port and work out with Cyprus how exactly the shipments would be secured.

"We were in touch with several countries that wanted to do this, in our neighborhood, the US, also Gulf states," said the official.

The cargo will be examined by the Shin Bet and Israeli customs officials in Larnaca, then will sail for Gaza. For now, ships will dock at a temporary pier being built south of Gaza City by the World Central Kitchen.

The WCK will unload the cargo, place it in temporary storage facilities it is building, and then send it to Gazook civilians.

The IDF will have troops at a remove from the WKC facility to ensure there are no attacks on the aid workers or looting of the goods.

The aid convoys will initially go to northern Gaza to make sure the mechanism works, then will also head south as the operation begins running more smoothly.

"Our goal is to establish a maritime highway of boats and barges stocked with millions of meals continuously headed towards Gaza," WCK founder and celebrity chef José Andrés and chief executive officer Erin Gore said in a statement.

Most aid currently gets into the south of Gaza via land crossings at Kerem Shalom and the Rafah gateway into Egypt, but the official said use of those crossings will be constricted once fighting begins in Rafah. That means Israel will need to open crossings directly into the northern Gaza Strip, said the official.

With the lack of port infrastructure, WCK is building a small landing jetty in Gaza with material from destroyed buildings and rubble. It has said it had another 500 tons of aid amassed in Cyprus which would also be dispatched.

Spanish celebrity chef Jose Andres, founder of WCK, posted on X after the Open Arms had set sail that the jetty was still under construction.

"We may fail, but the biggest failure will be not trying!" he wrote, alongside a nighttime photo of Gazooks building the jetty with construction vehicles.

WCK, a global organization created by Andrés after the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, has also partnered with Israeli restaurants and catering companies to deliver thousands of meals to Israeli civilians and soldiers in destinations including Sderot, Beersheba and the Golan Heights.

The IDF is not organizing its own convoys, the official stressed, because it needs to use troops for combat missions.

"We want to do the maximum possible, with minimum manpower, to allow maximum humanitarian aid," the official explained.

The official added that there will be no limits imposed by Israel on the amount of food, medicine, and water that comes in.

Israel is confident that once the sea lane begins working properly, the chances of a melee around shipments like a deadly incident last month will decline dramatically.

"The more the population sees that there is a system, a mechanism, they will understand — then people won’t loot and fight over the aid," said the official.

As for the US-built pier announced by Biden during his State of the Union address last week, the details are still being worked out, said the official.

"There is an IDF/Centcom group examining how exactly it will work," the official said.

The US military said a vessel had been dispatched to the region with construction equipment. US officials said that it would likely be weeks before the pier is operational. Construction is expected to cost tens of millions of dollars and take up to 60 days, The New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

IDF announces terms for West Bank Palestinians’ entry to Temple Mount during Ramadan
[IsraelTimes] Military liaison COGAT says visitors will allowed in for Friday prayers with a permit, limited to children under 10, men over 55, and women over 50

The Israel Defense Forces’ military liaison to the Paleostinians announced Tuesday that younger children and older adults will be the only West Bank Paleostinians permitted to enter Jerusalem to visit the al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount for the important first Friday prayers of the Moslem holy month of Ramadan this week.

This year’s Ramadan comes amid tinderbox tensions stemming from the ongoing war against Hamas

Strip, triggered by the group’s shock October 7 attack, when thousands of snuffies rampaged through southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages.

Terror groups have called on Paleostinians to come to al-Aqsa Mosque, which has often been a flashpoint of Israeli-Paleostinian violence, to confront Israel over the war in Gaza.

When Ramadan began Sunday night, COGAT, the Israeli defense body in charge of civilian affairs in the West Bank, had yet to announce restrictions on prayers at Al Aqsa.

The rules announced Monday would limit West Bank Paleostinians’ access to the compound for Friday’s prayers to men over 55, women over 50, and children under 10, COGAT chief Ghassan Elian said in an Arabic-language post on Facebook.

Worshipers will need a valid permit from COGAT, subject to security approval, and there may be changes per fresh assessments of the situation and other developments.

COGAT did not say if West Bank Paleostinians can visit Jerusalem between Sundays and Thursdays during Ramadan.

Unlike previous years, due to the war, Gazook Paleostinians will not be permitted to pray at al-Aqsa Mosque.

Paleostinians from the West Bank have been unable to visit Jerusalem under government restrictions put in place immediately after the October 7 Hamas attack that started the ongoing war.

Last Ramadan, there was no age restriction on women from the territory entering Jerusalem.

The Temple Mount is the holiest place in Judaism, where two biblical Temples once stood, and al-Aqsa Mosque is the third-holiest shrine in Islam, making the site a central flashpoint of the Israeli-Arab conflict.

Hundreds of thousands of Moslems crowd the site for prayers each Ramadan, as religious fervor is heightened. While Israel has imposed restrictions on Paleostinian access during times of heightened security tensions, it has refrained from imposing those rules on the country’s Moslem minority.

Police officers scuffled with some attendees at the entrance to the flashpoint Temple Mount site on the first night of Ramadan on Sunday, but prayers on Monday passed peacefully.

Police were also accused of denying some Arab Israelis entry to the site, in violation of a promise made by Netanyahu to enable free access to Moslem citizens.

Netanyahu pledged last week that the number of worshipers allowed to pray on the Temple Mount in the first week of Ramadan would be the same as in previous years and that no restrictions would be imposed on Arab Israelis, overruling the reported wishes of ultranationalist firebrand

IDF said to transport Gazan orphans to West Bank via Israel without cabinet’s OK
[IsraelTimes] Smotrich, Ben Gvir slam unusual operation to relocate dozens of children, orphanage staff to Bethlehem, in a move reportedly requested by Germany

The Israel Defense Forces reportedly rescued over 70 orphans from the Gaza Strip and facilitated their transport to the West Bank, via the outskirts of Jerusalem, in an unusual operation that started on Sunday and continued into Monday.

Far-right ministers were quick to criticize the reported move, as it came during ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza, and while 130 hostages taken during the terror group’s grisly October 7 massacre in southern Israel remain in captivity.

According to a Channel 12 news report, the operation was approved by the National Security Council and conducted in coordination with the Civil Administration. The convoy was expected to cross into the West Bank at 6 p.m. on Monday.

The orphans were reportedly accompanied by dozens of adult staff members from the SOS Children’s Village in southern Gaza’s Rafah that was relocating to Bethlehem in the West Bank. The humanitarian gesture was said to have come at the request of the German embassy in Israel.

“He who is compassionate to the cruel will ultimately become cruel to the compassionate,” Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich wrote on X, formerly Twitter, quoting a rabbinic adage. “I demand clarification from the prime minister on who gave this immoral order and with what authority, while our hostages and their children are held captive by the enemy.”

According to Channel 12, IDF troops were mobilized along the convoy’s route from the Taba border crossing with Egypt to the French Hill tunnels near Jerusalem, leading to the West Bank.
