Weapons continue to flow from Turkey and Qatar to terrorists, claims Ministry of Interior

According to Baraka, Turkish and Qatari aircraft are flying in and out of Libya Dawn

by the Misrata Brigades this past summer.

Last June, General Khalifa Hafter issued an order for all Turks and Qataris to leave eastern Libya within 48 hours under the suspicion that they were supporting terrorist activity.

Last September, Prime Minister Abdullah Al-Thinni accused Sudan and Qatar of backing Libya Dawn and warned that if they did not stop, diplomatic relations would be cut.

Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir has since patched things up with Thinni. The latter had also suggested that Qatar had changed its policy. However,

this latest attack, indicates a continuing suspicion.

and Guinea boycotted the session over the presence of the Qatar and Turkey, claiming that the two countries had nothing to contribute to the African Union (AU).

Qatar continues to be widely accused in Libya of interfering in Libyan politics and of supporting the Moslem Brüderbund and Islamists, an accusation it denies.

Turkey denies similar allegations. It points out that it has been at the forefront of trying to help rebuild stability and security in the country by helping train the Libyan police and army.

Nevertheless, Turkey is one of a handful of countries which has publicly received officials from the otherwise internationally-rejected Tripoli administration and parliament.

Canadian parliament killer buried in Libya
The rest of the story, such as it is.
[Libya Herald] The gunman in the 22 October 2014 shooting at Canada's parliament in Ottawa has been buried in Libya, according to a relative.

Candian-born Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, whose father is Libyan, was shot and killed by a guard after he had rubbed out a Canadian solider on duty outside the parliament.

The Libyan Embassy in Ottawa has confirmed that Zehaf-Bibeau's body was sent to Libya. According to his cousin, Ashraf Zehaf, the body was buried in mid-November in the presence of his father, Bulgasem Zehaf, who had traveled to Libya for the funeral.

Libyan consular official in Ottawa Khalifa Al-Ghuwel has confirmed that that Zehaf-Bibeau's body was released to the father to take to Libya for the burial.

Zehaf-Bibeau was 32 years old at the time of his death and was known to be a drug addict suffering with mental issues. He had converted to Islam in 2004.
Zehaf-Bibeau was 32 years old at the time of his death and was known to be a drug addict suffering with mental issues. He had converted to Islam in 2004 and visited Libya. In the months leading up to the shooting, he had planned to leave Canada, reportedly for Libya, and was living in an Ottawa homeless shelter as the government processed his Canadian passport.

According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Commissioner Bob Paulson, the "passport issue was central to what ws driving" Zehaf-Bibeau, and the gunman had gone so far as to make a video prior to the attack in which he allegedly expressed his motives as being related "to Canada's foreign policy and in respect of his religious beliefs".

According to family members in Libya, however, it was more likely that Zehaf-Bibeau was frustrated after earlier attempts to return to Libya, his father's homeland.

"The Canadian government is primarily responsible for all of this," said Zehaf.

His Canadian mother told news hounds that her son was simply mentally disturbed.

Egypt parliamentary poll looks set for delay after court ruling
[EURONEWS] Egypt's parliamentary poll looks set to be delayed after a court ruled part of an election law was unconstitutional and the main election committee said it was working on a new timetable for the long-awaited vote.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi directed his government to amend the law within one month.

The first phase of the poll is due to start on March 22. The election is the final step in a political roadmap the army announced in July 2013.

Another court ruling later this month will definitively decide whether or not the elections will be delayed.

The latest development highlights Egypt's rocky path towards democracy since the ousting of Islamist President Mohammed Mursi in 2013 by the army after mass protests against the rule of Egypt's first democratically elected leader.

Egypt Army: 172 Sinai Militants Killed in February
[AnNahar] Egypt's army said Sunday at least 172 Death Eaters were killed in February in joint police and military operations in the restive Sinai where security forces are battling an Islamist insurgency.

The Death Eaters were killed in a series of security operations in the peninsula after a deadly January 29 attack by jihadists left 30 people dead, mostly soldiers.

The army said the Death Eaters were killed in the North Sinai cities of El-Arish, Sheikh Zuweid and in the town of Rafah that borders Israel and the Paleostinian Gazoo Strip.

Another 229 suspected jihadists were tossed in the clink

in these operations, while 85 krazed killer hideouts were destroyed last month, the army said in a statement accompanied by a picture of a suspected krazed killer rubbed out.

Egypt's army has poured troops and armor into the region to fight an Islamist insurgency since the ouster of president Mohammed Morsi in July 2013.

Yemen's president declares Sanaa an 'occupied capital'
[YEMENONLINE.INFO] Yemeni President Hadi declared the city of Sanaa an occupied capital on Sunday and accused Houthi
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews ...
Death Eaters of turning against political dialogue, the Al Arabiya News Channel reported.

What has happened in Sanaa is a coup, the president, who now operates in the southern city of Aden, said. Hadi arrived in Aden earlier this week after fleeting the Houthi-run capital where he was put under house arrest by the Shiite bully boys.

In related news, the first Iranian flight landed in Sanaa, a day after officials from the militia-controlled city signed an aviation agreement with Tehran, Agence La Belle France-Presse reported.

The Mahan Air plane arrived in Sanaa carrying a team from the Iranian Red Islamic Thingy and medical aid, an aviation official told AFP.

Senior Iranian diplomats were on hand to welcome the flight -- the first between the two countries in many years.

Yemen's official Saba news agency, which is controlled by the Shiite murderous Moslems who overran Sanaa in September, said that under the deal Iran Mahan Air and Yemenia would operate 14 flights each a week.

Yemen's president says Saleh conspired with Iran to undermine power transfer deal
[YEMENONLINE.INFO] President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi accused his predecessor on Sunday of conspiring with Iran to scuttle a 2011 deal backed by Gulf states to transfer power to him in cooperation with the Shi'ite Moslem Houthi

He told tribal leaders, heads of political parties and other figures at a meeting in Aden that Saleh, who heads the General People's Congress party, the biggest bloc in parliament, had sent a parliamentary delegation to Iran to coordinate efforts to undermine the power transfer deal.

"Hadi said that this alliance between Saleh and the Houthis, in coordination with Iran, was behind the fall of Sanaa on Sept. 21 to the Houthi militias," a source at the meeting told Rooters. "No, the historic city (Sanaa) has become an occupied capital," he added.

Britain
'UK benefited from Saudi torture to stop attack'
[Iran Press TV] A fresh report says the British government used real-time torture in Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
to prevent al-Qaeda kabooms in 2010.

According to the Independent, the former head of the UK Secret Intelligence Service, MI6, has said torturing suspected Lions of Islam produces "useful information," and that "real-time" intelligence was obtained via torture in Saudi Arabia to help thwart a terrorist bombing on British soil some years ago. John Sawers also defended the UK security services against reports that torture played a role in the radicalizing of British Moslems.

The report said the discovery of a printer cartridge bomb on a UPS cargo aircraft at the East Midlands airport was made possible in 2010, only because two British government officials in Saudi Arabia were in "immediate communication" with a team using "torture" to interrogate an al-Qaeda operative.

The terror plot was to use cartridge bombs to bring down two aircraft over the eastern United States. However,
today is that tomorrow you were thinking about yesterday...
British authorities intercepted the first device at the cargo airport hub after what they described as a "tip-off" from Saudi Arabia.

A second device was intercepted aboard a freight plane in Dubai; both aircraft had started their trips in Yemen.

There was reportedly a frantic search prompted by "two or three" calls to Saudi Arabia after the tip-off, with security services battling to find the device. French security sources revealed the device was within 17 minutes of detonating when bomb disposal teams disarmed it.

One intelligence source said: "The people in London went back on the phone two or three times to where the interrogation was taking place in Riyadh to find out specifically where the bomb was hidden. There were two Britons there, in immediate communication with where the interrogation was taking place, and as soon as anything happened, they were in touch with the UK. It was all done in real time."

Now London-based political commentator Professor Rodney Shakespeare believes the British government is part of the problem itself as, "firstly, it is an outrage that they justify torture when it is known that it does not work.
How is that "known?" They've just described an incidence where it does work. But don't believe the evidence of your lying eyes. Professor Shakespeare's an Expert™ so we should go by his opinion.
The point is once you have tortured, you have destroyed the values of the society you are trying to protect."
To protect society from the likes of the people who killed Daniel Pearl or perpetrated 9-11 or the London bus kabooms I'd be perfectly willing to skin the turban with a blunt butter knife and rub him down with salt from head to toe. If they don't abide by the rules of war then they forfeit any call upon those same rules.
Professor Shakespeare told Press TV's UK Desk in a Sunday interview that confessions under duress were also usually misleading as the victims could concoct stories under pressure.
Except that information doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's also harder to maintain consistency in a lie under duress. If the information's concocted then it's back to the barbecue fork and the rubber gloves.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Were Chechen security personnel behind Nemtsov's death?
We'll likely never know. No one appears to be watching the bastids very closely.
The possibility of a Chechen connection should not be dismissed, given Nemtsov's repeated criticism of Chechen chief Ramzan Kadyrov, and the fact that since 2011, security personnel loyal to Kadyrov have reportedly engaged with impunity in abductions and killings in Moscow. Alternatively, Kadyrov's men may have killed Nemtsov at Russian President Vladimir Putin's behest.

China-Japan-Koreas
S. Korea, U.S. set to begin annual joint military drills
SEOUL -- South Korea and the United States will kick off their annual joint military drills this week, the Combined Forces Command (CFC) said Sunday, amid North Korea's repeated threats against the exercises.

The computerized command post exercise, called Key Resolve, will be held from Monday to next Friday to improve the combined forces' operation and combat capabilities to deter threats from the North. The two-week war game will involve about 10,000 South Korean and 8,600 American troops to test various scenarios in which South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff plays a leading role in conducting operations.

Separately, the allies are scheduled to carry out the field training exercise Foal Eagle, which involves a set of land, sea and air maneuvers, from Monday to April 24. The two-month tactical training will mobilize about 200,000 Korean and 3,700 American troops, mostly from overseas.

According to the CFC, the USS Fort Worth, a 3,450-ton Freedom-class littoral combat ship, will take part in the Key Resolve drill. The combat ship is armed with surface warfare mission package capabilities, including an MH-60R helicopter and Mark 110 57-millimeter gun.

Five countries -- Australia, Canada, Denmark, France and Britain -- are scheduled to participate in the exercises, with the Neutral Supervisory Commission to observe and monitor them to ensure they do not break the Armistice Agreement signed at the end of the 1950-53 Korean War.

A military source said South Korea and the U.S. have stepped up their joint surveillance system in the run-up to the joint military drills.

North Korea has called on the allies to stop the military drills, calling them a dress rehearsal for an invasion of the communist country.

N. Korea fires 2 short-range missiles into East Sea
SEOUL -- North Korea fired two short-range missiles into the East Sea on Monday in an apparent saber-rattling against annual military drills between South Korea and the United States, the Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

"North Korea fired two short-range missiles with a range of some 490 kilometers into the East Sea from its western port city of Nampo between 6:32 a.m. and 6:41 a.m. today," the JCS said in a short release.

Factoring in its range, the missiles are presumed to be Scud-C or Scud-D type ones, according to JCS officers, adding they appear to have landed in the East Sea after flying across its inland areas.

Monday's firing is the North's third missile launch this year. Last month, the bellicose regime fired five short-range missiles into the East Sea from its eastern border town of Wonsan just two days after the launch of anti-ship missiles under the guidance of leader Kim Jong-un, according to the JCS.

Noting that the firing "appears to be the North's provocations in opposition to the Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises," the JCS said it "remains vigilant against any additional launches while strengthening the readiness posture."

Earlier in the day, an unidentified spokesman for the General Staff of the (North) Korean People's Army issued a statement and vowed "merciless strikes."

"Key Resolve and Foal Eagle are an undisguised encroachment upon the sovereignty and dignity of the DPRK and an unpardonable war hysteria of dishonest hostile forces," said the statement carried by the North's state media Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) monitored in Seoul.

"The only means to cope with the aggression and war ... is neither dialogue nor peace. They should be dealt with only by merciless strikes," the North said, warning that the U.S. and South Korea "will have to bitterly regret the irretrievable consequences to be entailed by Key Resolve and Foal Eagle."

The two-week war game Key Resolve mobilizes about 10,000 South Korean and 8,600 American troops to test various scenarios in which South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff plays a leading role in conducting operations, while the field training exercise Foal Eagle involves a set of land, sea and air maneuvers, from March 2 to April 24 by 200,000 Korean and 3,700 American troops.

The large-scale annual drills are expected to further heighten tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with Pyongyang issuing near-daily threats of harsh retaliation of "hostile" forces.

Despite Pyongyang's demand, South Korea and the U.S. have said they will go ahead with the plan, as the regular exercises are defensive in nature and aim solely to bolster readiness against a possible invasion by the communist North.

N.Korea Resumes Tests for Smaller Missile Warheads
North Korea has resumed high-explosive tests believed to be aimed at making smaller and more powerful warheads for ballistic missiles, a government source said Wednesday.

Intelligence officials here believe North Korea's next nuclear test will produce a yield of at least 10 to 15 kilotons. That would be similar in power to the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima at the end of World War II. The last nuclear test in 2013 produced an estimated yield of 6 to 7 kilotons.

But the government source added there are no signs that the North is preparing for a nuclear test at the site in Punggye-ri, North Hamgyong Province.

Reports: CCTV Shows Syria-Bound UK Girls at Istanbul Bus Station
[AnNahar] Security footage appears to show three British girls, believed to be heading for Syria to join Islamic State

They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) bully boys, waiting at a bus station in Istanbul before traveling to a Turkish town on the Syrian border, media reported Sunday.

Close friends Kadiza Sultana, 16, and 15-year-olds Shamima Begum and Amira Abase, boarded a flight from London to Istanbul on February 17.

British police, who have said the girls are thought to have since entered Syria, and their families have launched urgent appeals for the teens to return home.

The CCTV images show the three girls entering a bus terminal in Istanbul's Bayrampasa district on the European side of the city, which the trio reached by metro from the airport.

They are seen wearing winter coats on top of their niqabs, two of them with hoods pulled up and carrying luggage as they wait, according to footage on the Aksam newspaper's website, which cited security sources.

The footage was recorded in the early hours of February 18, less than 24 hours after the girls left their homes in east London telling their families they were heading out for the day.

At one point they can be seen leaving the waiting lounge of the busy terminal along with other passengers and walking through a snow-covered path into the departure lounge.

The time codes on the images suggest that the girls waited at the terminal for nearly 18 hours before taking a bus to the southeastern Turkish city of Sanliurfa close to the Syrian border.

Aksam said that Turkish police were trying to identify the passengers in the footage helping the girls carry their luggage at the bus station.

The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, which has been under fire from its Western allies of failing to do enough to stop jihadists crossing into Syria from its territory, accused Britannia of failing to provide information about the girls sooner.

A senior counter-terrorism officer with London's Metropolitan Police, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Helen Ball, said about 60 British women have gone to Syria.

Of these, 22 were reported by their families, including 18 who were aged 20 or younger, she said. The last five reported to have traveled were just 15 and 16.

"This is a growing problem and it's one of real concern," Ball told BBC television, saying that the travel industry must work with police to identify those en route to Syria.

"The more everybody involved in travel understands this problem and can be alerted and be vigilant and look out for people, the better."

But she added: "Some of these women and girls are very carefully prepared for their travel so they don't stand out. They take unusual routes and it is very had to spot them."

An estimated 550 Western women have traveled to join the snuffies in Iraq and Syria.

"When we deployed to Operation Desert Storm in 1990, our Air Force had 188 fighter squadrons in the inventory. This budget will take us to 49," said General Mark Welsh, the Air Force chief of staff. "There were 511,000 active duty airmen during Desert Storm. We have 200,000 fewer today."

50 militancy cases identified for speedy trial in Karachi
[DAWN] KARACHI: Fifty cases of kabooms and Lion of Islam attacks by proscribed organizations have been prioritised for hearing on a day-to-day basis by the 10 antiterrorism courts in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, it emerged on Saturday.

A list of the 50 cases has been handed over to police to ensure the production of prosecution witnesses in courts.

Sources in the superior judiciary told Dawn that Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali of the Supreme Court of Pakistain, who is also the monitoring judge of the ATCs in Sindh, chaired a meeting which was informed that each ATC in the city picked up five militancy cases for hearing on a day-to-day basis as provided under the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) of 1997.

Of the over 2,600 cases pending disposal before the 19 antiterrorism courts across Sindh, nearly 200 militancy-related cases were prioritised for a day-to-day hearing.

The meeting was also attended by Justice Sajjad Ali Shah of the Sindh High Court, who is also judge in charge of the SHC for the ATCs, member of the inspection team-II Judge Abdullah Channa, judges of the ATCs in Karachi, law secretary, finance secretary, special home secretary and an additional inspector general of police.

The sources said Justice Jamali expressed his satisfaction over the performance of the ATC judges when he was informed that 173 cases were disposed of by the ATCs across the province.

Lakhvi living comfortable 'detention' life in jail: BBC report
[DAWN] According to a report published by BBC Urdu on Sunday, Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi -- the prime suspect and alleged criminal mastermind in the Mumbai attacks of 2008 -- is living a life of comfort while being held in detention at Adiala Jail.

After a long drawn legal battle post-Mumbai attacks, Lakhvi had been granted bail by an Anti-terrorism court that was trying him, a day after the horrific Beautiful Downtown Peshawar

The ill-timed decision was met with outrage from the international community, especially India.

He was then detained by the government under the Maintenance of Public Order (MPO) law.

Fast forward to today however, and, according to the BBC report, his detention remains highly unorthodox and suspect.

"He [Lakhvi] can receive any number of guests, any time of the day or night, seven days a week," a jail official told BBC.

It was further alleged in the report that inside his jail cell, Lakhvi enjoys the use of a television, mobile phone and internet access. Moreover, none of his visitors have to identify themselves to jail officials.

Iraq
UNAMI declares 3383 Iraqis killed – wounded in violence events of last February
[IraqiNews] The former Special Reresentative of the UN's Secretary General, Nickoly Mladenov, stated that 3383 Iraqi people were killed in February.
A number that is, at best, hypothetical, pending the exhumation of any mass graves lying about that will subsequently be attributed to the period in question. Ditto for non-mass graves.
The number of civilians killed was 611 (Including 30 civilian police), and the number of civilians injured was 1,353 (including 29 civilian police). "I therefore welcome the consistent calls for unity by the President, the Prime Minister and the Speaker of Parliament. Any effort to achieve unity through reconciliation must be based on the Constitution and the full participation of political, religious and community leaders from across Iraq," the SRSG further stated.
The reconciliation negotiation goes something like this:

ISIS Representative: Surrender or die, infidels!

Gov't Minister for Negotiation and Reconciliation: You'll understand that we can't possibly do that, though we're certainly willing to discuss things while we train for the next step.

Kurdish Colonel (female): Seriously, guys?! *BANG BANG* Hah -- two to the center of mass, as always! Hopefully their next negotiator will be more sensible.

Shiite militia continues training activities outside Kirkuk
[RUDAW.NET] Members of the Shiite militia group known as the People's Mobilization Forces, or PMF, have announced the completion of their fourth training course in the Kirkuk area.

An estimated 400 fighters have been trained in the use of heavy weapons and other tactics since the start of the first round of the program, according to a Rudaw news hound.

PMF officials on the Kirkuk front said there was close coordination with the Peshmerga, adding that the Kurdish forces were not opposed to the military training courses.

Shiite militias have one large military base as well as five smaller near Kirkuk. The PMF continually trains its fighters on weapons and resistance tactics, such as defusing land mines.

The Shiite militia training areas are far from the ISIS frontlines. The PMF has announced the trainings will not be done in secrecy and has invited the media to take part.

"Some media believe if we enter into Kirkuk,
... a thick stew of Arabs, Turkmen, Kurds, and probably Antarcticans, all of them mutually hostile most of the time...
a fight will break out," Irfan Abdul Muhsin, deputy commander of the PMF forces in Kirkuk, told Rudaw.

"But we will protect Kirkuk and Iraq," he said.

Husseini added, "The liberation of Tikrit has a strategic importance to Diyala, because of the long common borders that have been exploited by ISIS to attack some areas, like al-Adim district (75 km north of Baquba), during the last few weeks."

[IraqiNews.com] MP, Areez Abdullah, the head of the Oil and Energy Committee attributed not sending the Budget of Kurdistan Region by Baghdad to the delay in delivering the agreed upon quantity of oil by Kurdistan Region to Baghdad.

Speaking to IraqiNews.com "The two sides are adherent to the oil agreement but there are some issues related to not sending the budget by Baghdad to Kurdistan Region."

"Kurdistan Region announced that it cannot send the agreed upon quantity on time and they will do that in the next three months and that's resulted in not sending their budget by Baghdad," he concluded.

Residential Complex inaugurated for political prisoners in Maysan
[IraqiNews.com] The local government in Maysan province inaugurated a residential complex for the political prisoners.

The Authorized Manager of the Construction Company, Hassan Hassani stated to IraqiNews.com "The Complex is for the Foundation of the Political Prisoners and consist of 763 residential units."

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Martyrs Wanted: ISIS' Devastating Defector Problem
[The National Interest] As the pressure on the Islamic State (ISIS or ISIL) mounts against the backdrop of coalition attacks and a Kurdish offensive in Syria's Raqqa region, militant recruitment has become a pressing matter for the radical organization, which has lost many fighters in clashes around Iraq and Syria.
Teeny-bopper girls from London and Amsterdam aren't good enough? Who knew?
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), out of 1,800 people killed during the Kobani battles, 70 percent belonged to ISIS.
That means too many Kurds died, but their sacrifice was clearly not in vain...
On February 14, 132 fighters died across Syria, including forty-four ISIS militants. Given mounting losses, ISIS expansion has relied on a two-pronged recruitment approach: targeting foreigners looking to join the new caliphate and enlisting members of the local population. While the foreign recruitment strategy appears successful, local recruitment faces growing obstacles in Syria and Iraq.
As is usually the case, the locals aren't as stupid as the elites think them to be...
ISIS has relied on a powerful branding strategy, diffusing violent images on social media, YouTube and Twitter. The organization has released several documentaries boasting its military exploits such as the Flames of War featuring heroic-looking militants and gruesome footage of bombings and executions. This systematic glamorization of violence has allowed the terror group to attract foreign recruits. In January, a new study by International Center for the Study of Radicalization and Political Violence estimated that the number of foreign fighters in Iraq and Syria had reached about 20,000.

ISIS's local recruitment approach has been described in Idarat al Tawahosh (The Management of Savagery), a book written by Abu Bakr Naji in 2004, which ISIS has adopted. Naji argues that the first step for recruitment is "the creation of organizations to improve the management of the areas under our control." ISIS applied this technique initially following its surge in June. The groups managed everything from bakeries and banks to schools, courts and mosques in Raqqa. One activist admitted at that the time that the organization had been doing "massive institutional work."
ISIS 'nation building.' I hope it works out as well for them as it has for us.
So "nation-building" didn't work. Perhaps the next American administration will remember that when the UN, the Euros and the nomenklatura start bleating...

[RUDAW.NET] Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will likely live only two more years, the French daily Le Figaro reported on Saturday, citing intelligence sources.

The paper wrote that Khamenei's prostate cancer has reached stage four and has started to spread to the rest of his body, according to Western intelligence sources. The 76-year-old leader was admitted to hospital last September for cancer treatment.

Le Figaro's report raises the question of Khamenei's successor, and a possible power struggle among Iran's top political and religious leaders after his death.

Iranian state media have regularly published pictures of the all-powerful supreme leader on his hospital bed and under surgery. Analysts believe that the publication of his health condition has Khamenei's own approval.

Shortly after he was admitted to hospital last year, Iran's former Intelligence Minister Ghorbanali Dari Najaf Abadi said in a public speech: "In any case, we have to start thinking about the era after him (Khamenei)."

Syria rebels reject envoy plan to freeze Aleppo fighting
Beirut -- Syrian rebel forces in Aleppo on Sunday rejected UN envoy Staffan de Mistura's plan for a freeze in fighting in the divided northern city, dealing a blow to his peace efforts.
That didn't take long...
"We refuse to meet with Mr Staffan de Mistura if it is not on the basis of a comprehensive solution to Syria's drama through the exit of (President) Bashar al-Assad and his chief of staff, and the prosecution of war criminals," a newly-formed Aleppo revolutionary commission said.

The political and military grouping was set up on Saturday at a meeting in the Turkish border town of Kilis attended by exiled coalition chief Khaled Khoja, other opposition figures and Aleppo civil society representatives.

De Mistura’s proposal "falls short of an initiative to resolve the humanitarian crisis of our people targeted by the regime’s use of chemical weapons and barrel bombs prohibited by the international community," it said in a statement.

Aleppo's opposition forces also turned down preferential treatment for their region over other areas of Syria stricken by the country’s deadly conflict since 2011.

"Syria and its people are one and indivisible. The blood of our brothers in Daraa (in the south), in Ghouta (near Damascus), in Homs (central) and in other Syrian provinces are no less important than our blood in Aleppo," they said.

De Mistura on Saturday held talks in the Syrian capital to try to finalise a deal to freeze fighting in the war-ravaged second city of Aleppo. He met foreign minister Walid Muallem and agreed to send a delegation from his Damascus office to Aleppo on a fact-finding mission, state news agency SANA said, without giving a date.

"The mission will aim to assess the situation on the ground and to ensure that, once the freeze is announced, humanitarian aid can significantly increase and to prepare arrangements to follow up on violations of the freeze," the UN said.
The UN always tries to arrange a truce or a freeze, since they think that a truce equals peace. Problem is that one side always looks at a truce as an opportunity and the other side looks at it as a threat. That's why there is no truce.
The Swedish-Italian diplomat "hopes to set in motion as soon as possible his project" to halt fighting in Aleppo for six weeks, said a member of his delegation.

He has met government officials and opposition chiefs in recent weeks to promote his plan for a temporary truce in Aleppo in order to move aid into the northern city, as a starting point to be expanded to other regions. However, De Mistura, who has made the Aleppo freeze the centrepiece of his mediation efforts since he was named in July as special envoy to Syria, incurred the wrath of the opposition last month by describing Assad as "part of the solution" to the conflict.
Not very 'diplomatic' of him...
