Meet Egypt's new Prime Minister Sherif Ismail
[AlAhram] President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi instructs Sherif Ismail, minister of petroleum in the outgoing cabinet of Ibrahim Mahlab, to form a new cabinet as prime minister within a week, questions arise over the background and the identity of Egypt's third premier after the removal of the Moslem Brüderbund's President Mohammed Morsi in July 2013.

Looking at the 60-year-old's resume, one might get the sense that he is a technocrat and pragmatic, with zero political activity in terms of joining any political party, or high profile or controversial comments or statements, unlike some other minsters in Mahlab's outgoing cabinet.

's transitional president and prime minister Wednesday, raising fears of a coup just weeks before the country was to hold an election to replace its longtime leader who was ousted in a popular uprising late last year.

Hours later, gunfire erupted in the capital as the soldiers behind the standoff tried to disperse protesters who were marching on the presidential palace where the two transitional leaders were being detained. It was not immediately clear whether any of the demonstrators were maimed.

People could be seen fleeing in all directions as the shooting continued, according to an News Agency that Dare Not be Named news hound at the scene.

Members of the presidential security unit formed by the ex-president who was ousted from power last year have been publicly at odds with the transitional leaders in recent months. On Wednesday, they banned the interim president and prime minister from leaving, and were seen putting up barricades around the presidential palace.

Burkina Faso hosts French special forces and serves as an important ally of both La Belle France and the United States in the fight against Islamic snuffies in West Africa. While Burkina Faso has largely been spared from krazed killer violence, a Romanian national was kidnapped in April, and a Mali-based jihadi group grabbed credit.

Hungary treatment of refugees 'shocks' UN chief
[Iran Press TV] UN Secretary-General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon has voiced concern about the treatment of refugees on the border between Hungary and Serbia after Hungarian police attacked the asylum seekers.

"I was shocked to see how these refugees and migrants were treated, it's not acceptable," Ban said during a news conference on Wednesday.

He stressed that the refugees are escaping wars and persecutions in their countries and as a result, "we must show our compassionate leadership."

"They must be treated with human dignity and human rights
When they're defined by the state or an NGO they don't mean much...
," the UN chief said. "That's my consistent message to European and Asian leaders."

The remarks came shortly after Hungarian police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesting refugees that sought to enter the country from Serbia.

Hundreds of riot police, along with special anti-terrorist units with armored vehicles and water cannon, moved towards a crowd of refugees at the Roszke border crossing on Wednesday.

Hungarian police said a group of what they called "aggressive" refugees has broken through the fence.

Refugees end up boosting European economies: Analysts
[Iran Press TV] The European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
's border agency recently announced that well over 500,000 refugees have reached at the EU borders in 2015. This sudden influx has caused turmoil in European nations who are struggling to deal with the rising numbers of asylum seekers. Analysts say that if European countries grant them entry, they will probably end up boosting the lackluster economies of Europe.

If the immediate logistical problems and main humanitarian concerns are put aside, the large number of refugees trying to relocate in Europe may just have a positive economical impact in the long run, analysts say.

According to Nancy Green, a researcher at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences in Gay Paree, refugees have key roles in economic expansion and in periods of decline, as they often work in conditions that are usually viewed as unsatisfactory for native work force. She cited the steel and clothing industries in the 20th and 19th centuries and the service industries of today as examples of such jobs.

French economist Patrick Artus says welcoming asylum seekers into the continent gives EU the chance "not only to honor its position as a democratic Union that is wealthy and respectful of tradition, but also to expand its growth prospects."

Holger Schmieding, chief economist at the German investment bank Berenberg, has estimated that by the second half of 2015, the refugees may boost economic output in the eurozone by 0.2 percent.

Based on a report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), accepting refugees puts little to no pressure on a country's national budget.

"The impact of the cumulative waves of migration that arrived over the past 50 years in OECD countries is on average close to zero," the report said.

Hungarian border attacks by rioting migrants
More on this story from yesterday.
Hungarian police have opened fire with tear gas against 1500 rioting migrants who are attempting to break through the country’s border fence. Migrants have been chanting “Allah hu Akbar” while pelting police officers with missiles including “really big rocks”, bottles, and even food, leading to the crack down. The news follows Hungary’s state of emergency declared yesterday.

most of the migrants, “about 70 per cent” were men.

--reluctant Sky News reporter
The Hungarian crack down followed the suspension of the Schengen free movement area by Germany and Austria this weekend. It became clear to German authorities that a significant number of the migrants they were processing were not in fact refugees from Syria. Germany’s local authorities have also complained that they were overwhelmed by the influx of people, and were not about to process or house them effectively.

Reuters reports that Serbia says it has been informed by Hungary that the Roszke-Horgos border crossing will be closed for the next 30 days, and that Hungarian humvees with mounted guns are moving towards the Serbia border.

There are reports that some migrants have managed to break through the border fence, and Hungarian police have begun to use the water cannon to deter the rioting migrants, dozens of whom are climbing onto local buildings, hurling rocks at the border police, while others find more ammunition and keep a constantly supply going. One Sky News correspondent reluctantly reported this afternoon that most of the migrants, “about 70 per cent” were men. “There are families too,” he hastily added.

...migrants have been chanting, “Open! Open!” as well as “Allah Hu Akbar”
The pro-migration charity Save The Children appeared to dispute the United Nations’ own statistics, claiming that most of those involved were not in fact men.

In the past few days Hungary has begun construction on another border fence, this time on its Romanian border, and has positioned military vehicles along its border to scare off migrants.

According to the Hungarian press, migrants have been chanting, “Open! Open!” as well as “Allah Hu Akbar” as helicopters circle overhead. According to Sky News, the migrants had a “ringleader” with them with a megaphone who was egging the migrants on, shouting demands at the Hungarian police.

The Associated Press reports: “Hungarian police have used tear gas after hundreds of migrants broke through a razor wire fence on the border with Serbia. The police stopped the crowd, who threw plastic water bottles at them. There were no reports of injuries. Several people were seen with tears in their eyes from the gas.

“The crowd coming in from the Serbian border town of Horgos remained in front of the gate facing the police cordon. A Hungarian water cannon was parked facing them.”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has made it clear that he doesn’t intend for his country to be used by the migrants to cross further into Europe. He has previously commented upon the threat the migrants pose to Western civilisation.

"I've received [death] threats. There is a lot going on, but there is no need to speak out on it," Boynukalin told daily Hurriyet, confirming that he had asked the Ankara Governor's Office for a personal guard.

Boynukalin delivered a controversial speech addressing a group that attacked Hurriyet's headquarters in Istanbul on Sept. 6, which was captured on video and later went viral. Video footage taken since has also emerged, in which he can be heard threatening Hurriyet journalists and expressing his regret that they were "never beaten up before."

"They have never had a beating. Our mistake was to never have beaten them up. If only we had beaten them up," Boynukalin can be seen saying in the footage, in which he also mocked Hurriyet editor-in-chief Sedat Ergin and senior columnist Ahmet Hakan for their reactions after around 200 assailants smashed the front windows of Hurriyet's office building with stones and clubs.

Talking to journalists after the meeting, Sindh Information Minister Nisar Ahmad Khuhro said it was a follow-up meeting of the federal apex committee and was aimed to review the pace of implementation of decisions.

He said the federal government had decided to set up five military courts in the country, including one in Sindh, and that the province would soon appoint a judge for the trial of cases.

Mr Khuhro said the meeting, which lasted more than three hours, decided that all local and international non-governmental organizations operating in Sindh would have to obtain a security clearance. The international NGOs would have to get themselves registered with the federal government and the local ones working in Sindh with the provincial government.

He said that about 257 private security firms operating in Sindh would have to get security clearance and have their guards trained by Sindh police. They will not be allowed to hire foreigners or have partnership with them. He said that so far 67 security firms had been registered after verification.

Mr Khuhro said there were 9,590 religious seminaries across Sindh and 6,500 of them had been registered with the government.

He said a 10-member committee comprising five members each from religious institutions and the government would formulate a code of conduct for registration of seminaries. He said that foreign students who wanted to apply for a Pak visa would have to identify the madressah where they had got admission.

The apex committee also decided that arms licences of all those people who had failed to get the document renewed and computerised would be cancelled and the home department would confiscate their weapons.

Only the people can protect democracy provided they are given ownership of the system," he observed at the end of a debate held in the upper house to commemorate the International Day of Democracy.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Assad: Iran is sending arms to Syria
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] In an interview with Russian media, Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators...
said on Wednesday that Iran has sent Syria with military equipment and provided it with expertise since a civil war first broke out in 2011.

"Iran supports Syria and the Syrian people. It stands with the Syrian state politically, economically and militarily," he said.

Assad said that Tehran's support was also essential for his regime in Syria's conflict, which has cost more than 240,000 lives since 2011.

"When we say militarily, it doesn't mean - as claimed by some in the Western media - that Iran has sent an army or armed forces to Syria. That is not true," said Assad.

Syria was the only Arab state to side with the Islamic republic during its 1980-1988 war against Saddam Hussein's Iraq.

Iranian media run regular reports on fighters killed in the Syrian conflict described as volunteers helping to defend Shiite holy sites in the country.

Lebanon Marred with Protests, Clashes as Leaders Held Second Round of Dialogue
[ALMANAR.LB] Riot police have clashed with protesters in Beirut as a meeting by Lebanese leaders who gathered for the second session of national dialogue was being held in an attempt to reach common ground to end the presidential stalemate.

Protesters from the "You Stink" citizens' group said that at least 25 people were detained and several others were maimed on Wednesday afternoon. Anti-government demonstrators declared open-ended sit-in in Riad al-Solh until all protesters released. You Stink has been protesting against government corruption and political dysfunction.

At least 150 protesters gathered in Beirut's downtown area, where the second round of national dialogue was taking place in a week, several hundred security personnel were also deployed.

The second round of the all-party talks convened under the sponsorship of Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri
Speaker of the Lebanese parliament, a member of AMAL, a not very subtle Hizbullah sock puppet...
at the Parliament. A new round of talks was set for Tuesday, Sept. 22.

"The conferees discussed means to reach a breakthrough in the issue of the presidential election and other topics," said an official statement issued after the session.

"They stressed their support for the government in the implementation of the decisions that were taken to address the vital issues and it was decided to hold the next session on Tuesday, September 22 at 12:00 pm," it added.

Leb has witnessed dozens of protests in the past two months over several issues atop of which was the crisis of waste disposal which hadn't been solved yet.

Syria's Assad blames West for refugee crisis
[Dhaka Tribune] Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...
has blamed Europe's refugee crisis on Western support for "terrorists," as people fleeing his country's civil war stream towards the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
.

In his first public comments on the mass migration, broadcast yesterday, Assad said Europe could expect more refugees.

Countries including the United States, The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
and Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
want to see Assad gone from power and have supported the opposition to his rule during the four-year-old war, including some of the gangs fighting him.

Assad said Turkish support had been crucial to the growth of two of the biggest Death Eater groups in Syria, Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
and the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front, and aerial bombing by a US-led coalition had failed to stop Islamic State. Turkey denies the accusation.

The Syrian president dismissed Western suggestions that his government's actions in the war had fuelled the spread of such groups.

"As long as they follow this propaganda, they will have more refugees," Assad said in an interview with Russian media. "If you are worried about them, stop supporting terrorists."

The Syrian government describes all the gangs fighting it as terrorists. The gunnies in Syria range from the hardline Islamist Islamic State to nationalists viewed as moderate by the West.

Almost impossible to counter Iran's unique missile: IRGC commander
[Iran Press TV] A senior Iranian commander has revealed that the country is in possession of a "unique" missile that is all but impossible to defend against.

"We have a unique ballistic missile, which might be owned only by the US and Russia; and countering this missile is almost impossible," Brigadier General Hossein Salami, the second-in-command of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), said on Wednesday.

The commander further said that the IRGC is in possession of drones with a range of up to 3,000 kilometers and with reconnaissance and offensive capabilities.

Elsewhere, Salami said the US bases in the region are within the range of Iranian ballistic missiles, adding that the movements of foreign forces in the waters near Iran are under the close surveillance of the force.

"Each US airbase, whose aircraft have the capability to reach Iran's skies, as well as their aircraft carriers are within the range of Iran's precision and unique ballistic missiles and drones," Salami said.

Enemy infiltration major threat: Fearless Leader
[Iran Press TV] Fearless Leader of the Islamic Revolution
...Iran's doddering head theocrat...
Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei
...the successor to Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini and the actual dictator of Iran...
says the enemy's infiltration is among major threats to Iran.

The Leader made the comment in a meeting with commanders and officials of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) in the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Wednesday.

"Economic and security infiltration is not as important as intellectual, cultural and political infiltration," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

Of course, Ayatollah Khamenei said, different institutions, namely the IRGC, will firmly stand up to security infiltration, urging authorities to remain on the watch for economic infiltration as well.

For cultural infiltration, said the Leader, the enemy seeks to distort and undermine beliefs which underpin society.

In order to achieve political infiltration, Ayatollah Khamenei pinpointed, the enemy tries to sneak into decision-making centers.

"When a country is affected by such political infiltration, the direction in which that country moves will be according to the will of hegemonic powers," the Leader noted.

Ayatollah Khamenei urged the nation and authorities to remain vigilant in the face of enemy schemes.

"If we are watchful, the enemy will be disappointed."

He then called for efforts to further reinforce the foundation of the Islamic Revolution and of a revolutionary way of though, saying, "This is the fundamental responsibility of the IRGC's elite and all revolutionary elite in the country."

Terror Networks
Officials warn 20,000 ISIS jihadis 'have infiltrated Syrian refugee camps'
At least 20,000 bloodthirsty jihadis have infiltrated Syrian refugee camps and are plotting to enter Europe, a senior official warned tonight.

Lebanese Education Minister Elias Bou Saab said he fears Islamic State radicals make up at least 2% of the 1.1million Syrians living in camps across his country. And he warned of a covert jihadi "operation" to get across the Med and into Europe. His warning came as David Cameron made a whistle-stop tour of refugee camps in Lebanon and Jordan yesterday to try to win back public support on the Syria crisis.
Makes it a bit more believable that a substantial majority of the "refugees" are really stormtroopers...
"My gut feeling is they (IS) are facilitating such an operation. To go to Europe and other places... From Turkey to Greece," Mr Bou Saab said. "You may have, let's say, 2% that could be radicals. That is more than enough. We have had that also with our camps here - you find 2-3% of them."

Implications of the Marine Experiment with Mixed-Sex Formations on Force Size and Cost
Over the past year the USMC has conducted experiments to measure the impact of mixed-sex formations in three dimensions: Combat Effectiveness, Health and Welfare, and Talent Management. This work was done by examining both the ability of male and female Marine volunteers in Infantry, Field Artillery, and Tank and AAV Military Operational Specialties (MOS) to complete training for individual tasks and perform collective tasks appropriate to their MOS.

To examine the ability of Marines to complete individual tasks they sent the volunteers through the usual course of instruction and measured successful completion of the training. The summary of individual completion of training reported was:

• Infantry Officer Course graduation rate between May 12 – Apr 15:

#1  Unfortunately for the Marines + its sister services, regardless of the merits these conclusions are at serious Serious SERIOUS SERUS! ODDS wid the USDOD's own belief that there will no longer be any MAJOR = LARGE-SCALE CONVENTIONAL OR NUCLEAR WARS THRU YEAR 2050 IFF NOT THE REST OF THE CENTURY. This belief is the reason the US Govt. is shrinking the USDOD from the Cold War standard "2-to-2-1/2" Ocean or higher war startegy to a "1-to-1-1/2" Ocean or less war strategy.

USDOD = "DEFENSIVE" OR "ACTIVE-DEFENCE" UNO-LED GLOBAL PEACEKEEPING = "POLICE ACTIONS/ADVISORY WARS", NOT "OFFENSIVE" OR "OFFENSIVE-DEFENSIVE" WAR-WINNING.

#6  SteveS. The Marines, in fact anyone with more than 10 of IQ knew that beforehand. But that study had to be made in order to make it known to those with less of 10 IQ (atht includes mosts of those who voted for Obama°. Also in the study there is more than lifting heavy weights, there is also teh question of reduced lethality (obvious but a bit less: several people in Rantburg have defended the idea of women in combat roles). If you don't kill the bad guy, it is he who will kill you, or will live to kill civilians.

#7  I would add that harsh as it is, I suspect the study could have softened. For instance it tells there was parity for women as tank crews. Really? What happens when women have to change a track of an M1 Abrams? How fast they will be able to pump 120mm shells into its cannon?
Posted by: JFM || 09/17/2015 7:14 Comments || Top||

#8  OOps, no. It was for the artillery foarmations and it was for admission rates. Now, artillery shells are still heavier than tank shells. Israelis have female soldiers in artillery units but my guess is Israeli generals would use men instead if Israel had enough manpower.

#10  BFO

You can use two males to run a stretcher. You'll need four females to do the same. Your manpower requirements just doubled (and resultant support requirements to sustain just doubled as a minimum). Same thing on ships for damage control parties. Building ships for smaller crew? Better have people who can carry and tow the materials to save the ship. You can get a wash on the big ones like CVs, but the smaller vessels won't have the manpower padding.
