Afghanistan
Afghanistan: Ex-soldiers in hiding as ‘general amnesty’ fails them
[AMUtv] Wazhma’s husband was a police officer but was forced to flee Afghanistan in fear of reprisals by the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
when the group seized control of the country in August 2021. Her husband fled alone, leaving his wife and five children behind.

Wazhma said her husband graduated from Kabul Police Academy in 2005 and worked in various departments of the former Afghan interior ministry until the Taliban takeover of the country.

"Today, my family and I have shelter. I live in a friend’s home with my five children. The Taliban are looking for my husband and he was forced to leave the country. I don’t know what his crime was, and why he has to hide [from the Taliban]," she said.

Criticizing the international community for not taking any action against the Taliban, Wazhma stated that there is no "general amnesty" by the group and the world is silent against the arbitrary arrests and summary killings of former soldiers.

"What is the world waiting for? Why don’t they do anything for the [former] military personnel? For what crime must my children go hungry and thirsty for?" she asked, adding "I don’t know how long our horrible life will last."

WE LIVE IN HIDING FOR FEAR OF OUR LIVES
Faisal, a former soldier who worked for the army for 15 years, stated that he is dealing with many challenges — the fear of detention by the Taliban, unemployment, and financial problems — all of which have put pressure on him, he said.

Faisal has four children and his wife is suffering from heart disease. "This winter we had no food to eat and no fuel to warm up our home. All the Taliban forces get paid" while we live in hiding, he said.

This comes as former Afghan military forces — consisting of 300,000 personnel — were dissolved following the collapse of the former government. Some managed to flee the country while many others live in hiding. Some have been arrested or even killed by Taliban fighters.

MY CHILDREN GO TO BED HUNGRY
Qasim, another former Afghan soldier, said that he served in the ranks of the former defense forces for 10 years.

Qasim, 29, has four children. "I served in the army all these years, and now we don’t even have food [to eat]. We live in a rented house and my children go to sleep hungry at night," he said.

The former soldier noted that he was tortured several times by the Taliban because he used to serve in former Afghan military forces.

"No one hears our voice and I don’t know how to move forward with my life. I have a psychological problem due to anxiety," Qasim said.

For these soldiers, fear of the Taliban is very real. Despite a general amnesty that was imposed straight after the group seized control, there have been a growing number of reports indicating that former security forces members have been arrested, tortured and even killed.

The former security forces also raised their voices about detention, Dire Revenge, and torture by the Taliban, stating that they have been humiliated and insulted by the group, but they cannot speak out regarding the issue as they would face repercussions.

Many of them have sought refuge in neighboring countries — including Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites....
and Pakistain — because they were worried about their lives and the lives of their family members. While others who stayed in the country live in hiding.

#2  The escapees will eventually have to fight or come to the US. Maybe Iran or Pakistan will find a use for them. Likely they will join the insurgency which will swing the pendulum of violence back in the other direction. The clock will be turned back to the last century but the weapons in this new conflict will not be Soviet era.

Taliban fighters who moved to Kabul are ‘bored' and fed up with traffic
[DNYUZ] Fed up with the traffic, afraid of street crime and hooked on Twitter, Taliban fighters who left their villages and rode into Kabul after decades of war are struggling with the daily grind of city life.

In an in-depth study speaking to Taliban members who swapped war in the mountains for desk jobs, the Afghanistan Analysts Network found that many Mujahideen were finding it difficult to adapt in the capital.

Once free to roam the country fighting against occupying forces, the transition to office life appears to have hit Omar Mansur, a 32-year-old Taliban commander who fought in five provinces, hard.

“We had a great degree of freedom about where to go, where to stay, and whether to participate in the war,” he said. “These days, you have to go to the office before 8am and stay there till 4pm.

“If you don’t go, you’re considered absent, and [the wage for] that day is cut from your salary.”

‘TRAFFIC HAS BECOME MORE CONGESTED’
Now a middle-ranking civil servant, Mr Mansur cannot afford to bring his wife and five children to the capital, because of high rents.

Mr Mansur, who was born in North Waziristan and grew up in the remote village of Yahya Kheyl, about 150 miles south-west of Kabul, said the capital’s traffic was particularly egregious.

“What I don’t like about Kabul is its ever-increasing traffic hold-ups,” he said. “Last year, it was tolerable but in the last few months, it’s become more and more congested.”

Huzaifa, a 24-year-old former sniper, was enrolled in the capital’s police department on arrival. He echoed his comrade’s disdain for office life.

“The Taliban used to be free of restrictions, but now we sit in one place, behind a desk and a computer 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Life’s become so wearisome; you do the same things every day,” he said.

‘I SOMETIMES MISS THE JIHAD LIFE’
Like many Taliban fighters who arrived in Kabul in 2021, Huzaifa grew up in a rural area and had never seen the capital before.

“After we arrived in Kabul, we were stunned by its complexity, its expanse, its size. We didn’t know where to go. Everything was strange to us and of course, we were strange to the local people.”

For 25-year-old fighter Abdul Nafi, who fought in the Taliban’s insurgency for seven years, the boredom and bureaucracy of life as a civil servant makes him miss the war.

“I sometimes miss the jihad life for all the good things it had,” he said.

“In our ministry, there’s little work for me to do. Therefore, I spend most of my time on Twitter. We’re connected to speedy Wi-Fi. Many mujahedin, including me, are addicted to the internet, especially Twitter.”

High crime rates in Kabul were also of concern to fighters like Mr Nafi.

“What I dislike about Kabul is its traffic and what I fear is its thieves,” he said. “I keep my pistol on my person all the time after two of our comrades were robbed.”

#1  How are you going to keep them down on the poppy farm after they have seen Kabul? Robbing one of the “students” seems pretty audacious.

Britain
Alleged IS ‘Beatle’ to go on trial in UK
[Dawn] An alleged member of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS) group’s "Beatles" kidnap-and-murder cell will face trial in the UK this month on terrorism charges, a judge said on Monday.

Aine Davis
...formally Aine Lesley Davis, the “Paul“ of the Beatles, was jailed in Turkey in 2017. Mr. Davis is a former druggie/drug dealer who converted to Islam, then joined ISIS to get away from temptation. He was arrested after landing at Luton airport last August on a flight from Turkey, where he’d been imprisoned for terrorism…
is accused of belonging to the notorious group of hostage-takers, who grew up and were radicalised in London.

Active in Syria from 2012 to 2015, they were allegedly involved in abducting more than two dozen journalists and relief workers from the United States and other countries.

The group members were nicknamed the "Beatles" by their captives because of their distinctive British accents.

The hostages, some of whom were released after their governments paid ransoms, were from at least 15 countries, including Denmark, La Belle France, Japan, Norway, Spain and the United States. The IS tortured and killed their victims, and released videos of the murders.

Davis, 38, will go on trial on February 27 at the Old Bailey criminal court in London, judge Mark Lucraft said on Monday.

He faces two charges related to providing money for terrorist purposes and one of possessing a firearm for a purpose connected to terrorism.

The judge also extended Davis’s detention in jug to March 3.

#1  Not sure there will be much physical evidence against the guy. Certainly not someone that you want in the general population serving our a short sentence for tertiary crimes less than what he really did. Will a London jury even convict him?

#1  This seems equivalent to Chuck E Cheese corporation deciding that having a rat for a mascot of a restaurant chain is a bad idea. Pakistan is seen as a Sandals Resort for terrorists. It’s their brand.
