Some humor for the weekend: Lateral Science

lateral science The Young Man's Book of Amusement
This wonderful book was published in 1854 and it contains gems of Victorian experimental science. It`s unpromising, mildly suggestive title belies a veritable cornucopia of experiments, including the macabre "Galvanic experiments on the dead body of a criminal"

lateral science EDISON -- The Menlo Park DRUGS BARON
Thomas Alva Edison, you stand accused of the supply of poisons and dangerous drugs for human consumption. Namely Heroin, Strychnine and Opium

lateral science Martinus Van Marum "discovers" a light blue gas in 1785 with the help of Mr. Cuthbertson
Ozone liquifies as an explosive indigo-blue liquid & solidifies as violet crystals

lateral science Victorian Nitrogen Laser
A letter from Glitch to Faraday, dated June 1856, would appear to indicate the observation of laser action in air, more than a century before Maiman first demonstrated his ruby laser.

#1  if you have young kids/grandkids, I totally recommend the Dangerous/Daring Book series for both boys and girls. They include interesting (even to kids) lessons on stuff we kids used to learn in the old days. My young nephews loved it and my own 18-20 yr old sons loved it as well (got their own copies after checking out my nephew's copies)

Common misconceptions about the Nobel Peace Prize
Another A-Pee article. Here's the salient point:
  • Myth: The prize is awarded to recognize efforts for peace, human rights and democracy only after they have proven successful.

More often, the prize is awarded to encourage those who receive it to see the effort through, sometimes at critical moments.
The timing of this being published at the same time that Noobama's prize is announce is either serendipitous or maybe the author felt compelled somehow to see if this might possibly be some kind of, err, "mistake". Personally, I think it's political payback of some kind, as Noobama gets to keep the $1.4M purse that happens to come along with this prize. What are the chances that he'll donate this to charity? And do I read things right that he was nominated for this prize about ten seconds after he became president elect?

No more shred of credibility for the Nobel Peace prize, I guess.

#4  The Peace Prize is awarded by a group of five politicians from Norway. That's it.

Any moral legitimacy or authority is based on their choice being at least reasonable in the eyes of the public.

If their choice is patently unreasonable then the moral dimension is lost. It's just five Norwegians (fallible humans, not conduits of divine wisdom) deciding to give a sum of money to a specific person or persons.

Neither by an election or by any other process has this committee been authorized to set "policy goals" that the United States or any other country is obliged to pursue.

Golfer loses Nobel Peace Prize and Arm

BEAUFORT, S.C. -- A 77-year-old man has lost his lower arm after he was bitten by an alligator on a coastal South Carolina golf course.

Multiple media outlets reported that the Fripp Island man was playing the Ocean Creek Golf Course about 3 p.m. Thursday when he was attacked. His name was not released.

Kate Hines with the Fripp Island Property Owners Association says the man was picking up his ball when a 10-foot alligator pulled him into a nearby pond. The man's golf partners were able to free him. Workers from Tracks Wildlife Control in Beaufort killed the alligator and removed the man's arm.

He was taken to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston in hopes of reattaching his arm. His condition was unclear early Friday.
"Doc, doc, will I be able to hit a one-iron after you re-attach my arm?"
    "Er, yeah, I suppose so."
    "Great! I never could before!"

Egypt detains 23 in US phishing investigation
[Al Arabiya Latest] Egyptian authorities have detained 23 people for questioning in connection with an Internet "phishing" scheme that targeted U.S. citizens and banks, Egyptian security sources said on Thursday.

The U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation said on Wednesday that a multinational probe had uncovered a sophisticated U.S.-Egyptian phishing operation that fraudulently gathered personal data from thousands of people, and used it to defraud U.S. banks.

U.S. authorities had detained 33 of 53 defendants named in a U.S. indictment in the case, the largest cyber crime investigation to date in the United States, the FBI said on its website. It added that Egypt had also charged 47 people.

The Egyptian Interior Ministry said in a statement that Egyptian suspects in the case had been taken into custody, and security sources put the number of detainees at 23. The sources said all those detained were between 18 and 25 years old and were from the Nile Delta province of Daqahlia.

The Interior Ministry said Egyptian police had confiscated 21 computers, a number of credit cards and checkbooks, and $8,900 in Egyptian and U.S. currencies.

"The inquiries showed the presence of U.S. citizen suspects in the United States who agreed with Egyptians in Egypt to create a gang to seize U.S. citizens' money by obtaining their credit card details through fraud," an Interior Ministry statement said.

The statement added that those involved in the scheme had accessed information of U.S. banks online, and made transfers to accounts in the United States. The money was immediately withdrawn by U.S. participants in the scheme.

Later, the money was divided and wired to accomplices in Egypt, and redistributed, the interior ministry statement said.

    Bangladesh
Bangla govt mobilises troops along Burma border
[Bangla Daily Star] Bangladesh has reinforced its troops along the border with Myanmar as tension went high following repeated provocative acts by the latter's military forces including violation of international border and illegal construction of barbed-wire fences along the frontier.

Highly-placed sources in the government said the reinforcement was required as the Myanmar military junta deployed huge troops with heavy weapons within five kilometres of the border and many of them frequently intruded into Bangladesh territory, added the sources.

Bangladesh in the past always resolved all disputes with its neighbours through bilateral discussion but this time the authorities had taken it seriously and they are taking steps accordingly, said the sources.

The tension ran high as Myanmar troops fired several shots towards Bangladesh territory, witnesses said.

Paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles were kept on high alert yesterday along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

"Myanmar troops intruded into Bangladesh territory several times which is a serious threat to country's security," said an armed forces division report submitted to the government with its recommendations.

A group of Myanmar troops from engineering corps of its Medaik camp trespassed into Bangladesh territory to gather information about Bangladesh on September 29, the report said, adding that after the intrusion Bangladesh army was put on high alert there.

    Caribbean-Latin America
OAS mission leaves as talks on resolving Honduras political crisis begin
TEGUCIGALPA, Oct. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Organization of American States (OAS) foreign ministers' mission left Honduras on Thursday, leaving a technical committee in place, to follow up on progress made in resolving Honduras political crisis.

Costa Rican Foreign Minister Bruno Stagno read a statement stating the committee's optimism as officials prepared to leave Tegucigalpa.

"The OAS mission is convinced that the dialogue begun with the direct participation of both sides can lead to the overcoming of the political crisis in which the nation is involved," the statement said. "The OAS has proposed to all interlocutors that, in order for dialogue to be undertaken in an appropriate manner, all constitutional guarantees be restored and all media whose operation has been suspended be restituted."

The mission had also asked that Manuel Zelaya, who was ousted from the presidency in a June 28 coup, have normal access and consultation with representatives at the negotiating table and that the problem relating to Brazil's embassy in Honduras capital Tegucigalpa, where Zelaya has been staying since Sept. 21, be resolved. The mission also demanded that Zelaya be given "living and working conditions appropriate to his high office."

Stagno said that the OAS hoped the participants at the negotiating table will undertake the responsibility given to them to find a way to restore democratic order in Honduras. He also called for all sides to respect human rights in order to maintain an atmosphere of peace and reconciliation that is offered by dialogue.

The mission arrived on Wednesday in Tegucigalpa, meeting first with Roberto Micheletti, who became president after the coup, then with Zelaya and candidates for president. On Thursday, committees sent by Zelaya and Micheletti met but the two sides have not yet reached any agreement.

Zelaya said earlier that the discussions, which will last until Oct. 15, have to restore him to the presidency.

Micheletti blasted OAS in new round of crisis talks
Yesterday, Honduran President Roberto Micheletti took advantage of his first opportunity to address representatives of member nations of the Organization of American States in a public forum to make an impassioned defense of his country. In frank and eloquent remarks that made his OAS nations’ guests uncomfortable at times, he chided them for never bothering to listen to his Administration’s side before condemning it. President Micheletti’s speech explained the constitutional grounds for the position of the current Honduran government. He also denounced the blatant corruption of Manuel Zelaya, which has given rise to criminal charges against the former president.

The following are excerpts of Micheletti’s remarks to the foreign dignitaries:

    Europe
French Muslim football team refuses to play gays
[Al Arabiya Latest] An amateur Muslim football team has provoked an outcry in France after refusing to play against a team which promotes homosexual rights and has gay players.

The Creteil Bebel Muslim team pulled out of its planned tie with Paris Foot Gay (PFG) at the weekend, saying it went against their religious beliefs to play against homosexuals.

The PFG said they would sue Creteil Bebel for homophobia. "We have been insulted in the past, but this sort of thing has never happened," Pascal Brethes, chairman and co-founder of PFG, told Reuters.

Creteil Bebel defended their pullout, saying their religious convictions were much more important than any sporting event. "As a Muslim, I have the right not to play against homosexuals because I don't share their ideas," Zahir Belgarbi, one of the team directors, told France Bleu radio.

PFG was set up in 2003 to fight against homophobia, which is rampant in some of the poor suburbs around Paris where it plays.

Brethes said he was shocked by the way Creteil Bebel players had openly revealed their prejudices. "It is as if they find it normal to be homophobes," he said.

Human rights and anti-discrimination groups leapt to the defense of PFG and city authorities also weighed into the row.

"The city of Paris will be inflexible when faced by attacks on its principles and will continue to fight in a determined fashion against all acts of discrimination," it said in a statement.

#2  Yeah, this was discussed here; best comment EVAR on this one was "yarrr..., let's create a Wingnut Football Club, and let's refuse to play with everyone!".

More seriously, it is very enjoyable to see Diversity™ eating its own, but, then again, the "frictions" between the Youths and the homos are nothing new, and often involve much more harmful events (assaults, muggings, and, yup, rapes, whihc is pretty funny, considering those are borne out of homophobia, but, hey, it's not gay to gangrape a man, as long as you're the rapists).
This is usually swept under the rug, and as a result, IIUC, the "Gay Community" has no ilusions whatsoever about the Youths, especially as they usually come on top of the Diversity™/Victimhood™ foodchain... not that it will stop professional Gay activists to be as anti-western/ antiwhitey/ anti-Christian/ pro-immigration/ anti-Israel/... as the rest of the lot.

Obama Nobel win shocks Swedish peace group
    The Local
    English-language Swedish news site
    (boldface emphasis added)

The Swedish Peace and Arbitration Society (Svenska Freds) has classified as "shameful" the decision by the Nobel Committee in Oslo to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 to Barack Obama.

"The choice of Barack Obama as the recipient of the world's foremost peace prize is shocking," said the group's chairwoman Anna Ek in a statement. Ek conceded that the US president had sent "positive signals" with regard to his future commitment to global peace. "But at the same time Obama is the president of the biggest military power in the world and is waging two wars in the world. That should certainly disqualify him from a peace prize," said Ek.

Social Democrat press spokesman Urban Ahlin also confessed to being caught off guard by the award. "I was quite surprised I have to say. The efforts Barack Obama has made for peace do not currently correspond to a peace prize," he told news agency TT.
My opinion of the intelligence and good sense of Scandanavian peace hippies has gone up a bit after reading this.

    That's Nobel-Prize Winning Teleprompter to You ...

Wow. What I can I say. Wow. I'm honored. Clearly Big Guy - who can't stop dancing on the bed up in the residence right now, by the way - won this award for his speeches. I mean, after nominating himself for the Nobel Prize for Peace two weeks after entering the office of the Presidency, let's face it, it isn't like he had anything to show for it.

He said if he'd known it was this easy to win a Nobel, he would have nominated himself for the Nobel Prize for Literature years ago for his 5th Grade essay on "Raisin the Sun" (of course, he would have had to share that prize with Billy Ayers). Or his yeast science project from 7th grade for the Nobel Prize for chemistry.

There's so much to do now before the awards ceremony in Oslo. I'm going to have to buy a white tie and tails, and really get a good, high-gloss screen polishing for the awards ceremony. Big Guy is hoping that after accepting the Nobel for peace, if he gives a really good speech, they'll give him a second Nobel for talking, because he's really earned that one.

Not the mention that on the same day he launched an unprovoked attack by bombing the Moon. [White House spokesmen replied that it was all planned during the Bush Administration.]

The Nobel Peace Prize 2009 awarded to President Obama
Stunning choice made Obama the third sitting president to win the Nobel Peace Prize and shocked observers because Obama took office less than two weeks before the nomination deadline.

President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples," the Norwegian Nobel Committee said, citing his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation.

So Obama got the Prize for stuff he hasn't done yet.

... the committee endorsed "Obama's appeal that 'Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.'"

So Obama got the Prize for being a socia1list.

#23  Mona Charen, at National Review's "Corner":

If Obama needs anything now, it is a sense of modesty, a willingness to tack and accept half a loaf, and diminish his grandiosity. (Not that I want him to learn these lessons. I'd rather he overreach, but as a matter of analysis.) His self-worship has created real problems for him and this will only feed into it. His vanity is his Achilles heel. The Nobel committee actually did him no favor.

Several commentators are suggesting he turn it down, including Mickey Kaus:

He gets at least the same amount of glory—and helps solve his narcissism problem and his Fred Armisen ('What's he done?') problem, demonstrating that he's uncomfortable with his reputation as a man overcelebrated for his potential long before he's started to realize it. ... Plus he doesn't have to waste time, during a fairly crucial period, working on yet another grand speech.

#24  So Obama got the Prize for stuff he hasn't done yet.

No, Dr. Steve, President Obama got the award for trying. Actually, given that the deadline was two weeks after he took office, he was given it for planning on trying. On the other hand, this sure spiked the nominations of Hamas, Hizb'allah, President Ahmadinejad, and Mr. Osama bin Laden, all of whom were nominated for attempting to unite the world under a peaceful world government.
