Repeat felon border crosser puts glue on fingers to hide identity
A woman who crossed the U.S.-Mexican border Tuesday tried to hide her identity from customs by covering her fingerprints with glue. The 37-year-old Mexico citizen tried to cross the border at the San Luis Port of Entry.

Officers detained her because she presented a U.S. passport with a photo that did not match her appearance. The passport did not belong to her.

After officers removed the glue from her fingertips, new prints revealed she was a convicted felon with an extensive criminal history. No further information about the woman's identity or criminal history was immediately available.

The woman was arrested and held for immigration processing. She may face prosecution.
Or appointment to the administration. Whatever.

1,500 Suitors Line Up to Marry Paraguay's No. 1 Soccer Fan
[Chosun Ilbo] More than 1,500 suitors have lined up hoping to marry Larissa Riquelme, an actress and model who shot to worldwide fame after being shown cheering for the Paraguayan national team with a mobile phone tucked in her cleavage during the World Cup in South Africa. Riquelme announced on Oct. 11 that she is looking for a husband.
Obviously those men are looking for a woman with ummm... enthusiasm.
Matchmaking firm Sunoo said 1,592 men aged between 18 and 44 had applied through its website by the end of last month. Some 20 percent of them applied from Mexico, Peru and Venezuela. The Korean applicants have stable jobs, ranging from teachers and police officers to civil servants and office workers, while many of the foreign applicants were fitness trainers or other men who stressed their physical attractiveness.

Riquelme, who signed up with Sunoo through an acquaintance working at the Paraguayan Embassy in Seoul, said she has had "great interest in Asia" and is seeking a "sensible man who carries the subtle scent from just a dash of cologne." Sunoo plans to narrow the list of candidates to 100 based on the applicant's Spanish language ability and then present Riquelme with three finalists.

Tanzania opposition leader wants vote result halted
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] A Tanzanian opposition leader on Wednesday demanded the electoral commission stop announcing presidential results, saying they were erroneous.

"The number of votes in our favour differs from those announced by the National Electoral Commission," said Wilbrod Slaa.

"We have asked NEC to stop announcing presidential results, investigate the discrepancies and order fresh counting and tally the figures with those of our agents," Slaa told AFP.

The 62-year-old Slaa, who ran in Sunday's presidential election on the ticket of CHADEMA, the Swahili acronym for Democracy and Development Party, also said security agents had tampered with both the results and the number of votes cast.

Latest results Wednesday showed incumbent President Jakaya Kikwete with a strong lead, having won in 121 of the 146 constituencies announced, followed by Ibrahim Lipumba of the Civic United Front who won in 19 and Slaa in just six.

Tanzania has 239 constituencies.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
Tanzania's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party is expressing confidence in winning both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

"We expect to lose about 51 parliamentary constituencies to the opposition, but we will still retain the majority of the 239 seats," CCM campaign manager Abdulrahman Kinana said in Dar es Salaam.

"We acknowledge that the National Electoral Commission has the mandate to announce election results, but we can confirm that CCM are on course to comfortably winning the presidential and parliamentary elections," he said.

New Zanzibar president sworn in, first albino MP elected
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] The newly elected seventh Zanzibar President, Dr Ali Mohamed Shein, was sworn yesterday in at a well-attended ceremony held at Aman Stadium in Unguja Island. He solemnly pledged to serve Zanzibar as expected of him before his predecessor Aman Abeid Karume handed over the Union and Zanzibar constitutions to him.
Ummm... That might not be a bad tradition to establish in our own country...
It was at 9:47am when Zanzibar Chief Justice Hamid Mahmoud presided over the swearing in ceremony that was escorted by a 21-gun salute from armed forces and a five-minute opportunity for Dr Shein to inspect the guard of honour for the first time.

Calm disappeared amid prayers when Islamic, Anglican and Roman Catholic Church leaders were given about 15 minutes to say their prayers. The Zanzibaris, who attended the ceremony, suddenly cheered after the RC Bishop Augustine Shao of Zanzibar Diocese mentioned the Civic United Front secretary general Seif Shariff Hamad in his prayers. Hamad vied for the hotly contested presidential post, but he was edged by Dr Shein by a one-per cent margin.

The new Zanzibar President took to the podium at 10:30 to give his address, hinting that he would only extend his gratitude to voters and political parties involved in the election in his brief speech.

Of the long list of the election stakeholders he thanked included female food vendors popularly known as Mama Lishe in Kiswahili for serving meals during campaign rallies.

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
Tanzania's first elected albino politician said yesterday the result was a breakthrough for albinos in the country where scores have been murdered for their body parts used in sorcery.
Were those who voted against him prejudiced against his lack of colour?
Salum Khalfani Bar'wani won the southern Tanzania Lindi Town constituency seat, beating a ruling party candidate who had served in parliament for 15 years. The 51-year-old MP-elect said his victory signaled a change in Tanzanians' attitude towards the disabled and albinos, who have been hunted down by witchdoctors for their body parts used to concoct lucky charms. "I am happy with the choice of the people. They voted hugely to elect me," Mr Bar'wani said by phone from his remote hometown of Lindi.

"In the past, people did not believe that an albino or any disabled person could have such an opportunity without sympathy or being favoured. Now they believe that we are capable without sympathy."

Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete in 2008 nominated an albino woman to parliament at the height of ritual albino killings.

Winnng the seat did not however come easy for Bar'wani, who stood as a candidate of the opposition Civic United Front (CUF) in Sunday's election. His opponents urged their supporters to reject him, saying he could not think properly because he was an albino, he said. "My opponents ridiculed me and residents here were infuriated by that. They said albinos lack vitamin C and therefore they do not have the ability to think.

"They told supporters not to chose an albino because of this," he added.

The head of the Tanzania Albino Society, Ernest Kimaya, welcomed Bar'wan's election. "We are happy to get one albino MP this year. It's very good.

''It shows our importance in the community," Kimaya told AFP. Tanzania's Foreign Minister Bernard Membe, from the same region as Bar'wani, said his election showed an "acceptance of people with disabilties."

"As an MP in Lindi region I pledge to give him due support despite (his) coming from the opposition," added Membe. Bar'wani said he would work to address problems facing albinos.

Court is told of 'black magic' claims by mum
AN ALLEGED sex offender has been described to a jury as a "black magician in the guise of a devout Muslim" by the mother of one of his supposed victims.

Allegations of satanic worship, attempted murder, and demonic possession have also emerged in the case of Mohammed Anjum at Teesside Crown Court. The 53-year-old is accused of exposing his glitter-flecked private parts to two young children - a boy and a girl - before carrying out two solo sexual acts in front of them.

He denies the allegations.

Yesterday, the mother of the boy took to the witness stand where she made a series of claims. She admitted previously liking Anjum but not trusting him, before becoming suspicious of him.

She later asked her son if Anjum had "touched him".

"I thought he is leading a double life -- he has disguised himself as this religious devout Muslim," she said.

Defending Anjum, Tony Hawks claimed that the mother was trying to "ruin" him.

Brazil to complain of Fed decision at G20 meeting
Brazil will use the upcoming G20 meeting as a forum to complain about the Federal Reserve's decision to print billions of dollars to bolster the U.S. economy, Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega said on Thursday.

Mantega told reporters said the Fed's decision on Wednesday could aggravate imbalances in the global economy
Not sure many people will listen to Mantega, but if his daughter were to complain, that would be a different matter.

Industrialists warn against plan to destroy the private sector
[El Universal] The Venezuelan government is taking steps to destroy the private sector of the economy, said Carlos Larrazabal, the president of the Venezuelan Confederation of Industries (Conindustria).

"We are aware that the socialist-oriented or rather the communist-oriented policies implemented by this government are not going to stop until reaching their goal of destroying the private sector of the economy, according to the platform adopted by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), which was approved in April 2010," said the business leader in the event called "2011 Outlook" hosted by Conindustria.

The consolidation of the expropriation policy implemented by the government is only attributable to the president's efforts to implement an ideological project rather than achieving positive economic results.

"It has been abundantly demonstrated that a country without economic and social freedoms, without legal security and independence of powers, without firm and solid respect for the right to property, and without a system that encourages hard work and free enterprise will never attain the desired goals of development and eradication of poverty," Larrazabal stressed.

With all other problems solved, Spain moves to upend names
Spain's Socialist government has found a new place to push for gender equality, seeking to erase all vestiges of male bias from the country's double-barreled last names.

Spaniards have two surnames, and under current law for registering babies, either the father's or the mother's can come first. Traditionally, however, it is the dad's and in cases of disagreement among the parents, the father's name automatically takes priority.
'cuz this is such a pressing issue in a bankrupt country!

Spain :Persecuted for refusing to wear veil, Iman sentenced
The Court of Tarragona (Catalonia) has sentenced the imam of the Islamic community of Cunit, Mohamed Benbrahim, to one year in prison for serious threats against Fatima Gahilan, a 31-year-old Moroccan woman and cultural mediator for the municipality, who refused to wear a veil and stop driving her car. A 9-month sentence, cited by Publico, was also handed out to the president of the Islamic Association of Cunit, Abderraman el Osri. A 730-euro fine was also issued to the imam's daughter, Hafssa Ben Brahim, for having repeatedly insulted and threatened the cultural mediator.

The wife of the Muslim spiritual leader, Zohra Aalalouch Ahmaddach, was acquitted. The judge also issued a restraining order on the three individuals, who are banned from coming within 500 metres of Fatima Ghailan or communicating with her for the next two years, and must pay 1,500 euros in compensation for moral damages.

During the trial, it was learned that the four people accused made Fatima's life impossible, constantly insulting and threatening her. The imam and his wife and daughter even collected signatures in the Muslim community against her in November two years ago, falsely accusing her of forging reports so Muslims would be denied social assistance.'
Fatima is going to have to move, change her name and watch her back.

Gallup: Unemployment up in October
Tomorrow, the Department of Labor will release its estimate of unemployment for October, and Gallup says to prepare for an increase from the current 9.6% to as high as 9.9%. The news isn't all bad, though, as Gallup says that the DOL calculations will miss a small hiring binge at the end of the month, although that doesn't take into account seasonal adjustments.
Nice chart and other facts at the hotair link. It really shows that employment is at a standstill. Whether Washington wants to admit it or not, we are in a depression.

#1  Gallup can say what it wants.

However, the unemployment rate (or rates if you count U1 through U6 as 6 different rates) is based on the DOL household survey and Gallup does not have access to that. In addition the DOL employment survey (which has the total employment numbers) is very large and it would be very, very, expensive to duplicate. Gallup may be good at sampling and statistical analysis, but that doesn't get you the 2nd significant digit. For that you need lots and lots of actual data.

Iranian 'adulteress' not executed as feared
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] An Iranian woman sentenced to be buried alive under a pile of rocks for adultery was not killed today as had been feared, but she remains on the murder short list, an Iranian activist told AFP, citing unnamed sources in Iran.

"Sakineh Mohammadi-Ashtiani was not bumped off today," exiled human rights activist Mina Ahadi from the International Committee Against Stoning told AFP by phone in Germany, where she lives.
It's a sad world we live in when we have an actual "International Committee Against Stoning." I'll be it has an interlocking directorate with the International Committee against Autos-da-fe and the Anti-Crucifixion League.
"Execution time (for the day) has now passed, so it won't happen today (Wednesday). But the blood thirst remains and it could still happen at any time." Ahadi and French human rights activists had voiced fears on Tuesday that the mother-of-two, 43, could be executed as early as Wednesday, prompting concern from the European Union and the United States, among others. "Certain countries, like France, Britain, Italy, the EU, with its representative Catherine Ashton, and the United States reacted very well on Tuesday," Ahadi said.
Did they do anything other than emit verbiage?
"Some countries have been in contact with Iranian government representatives. It is clear that all this attention played a role," she added. "But the execution has been delayed, not cancelled."

She said that according to sources in Iran, Mohammadi-Ashtiani's name was on a shortlist of people to be executed in the coming days or weeks drawn up by Iran's Supreme Court. This was communicated by letter to the prison in Tabriz, northwest Iran, where she is being held, Ahadi added.

#3  All those who legislate should answer to the voters. This was justice.
Posted by: No I am The Other Beldar || 11/04/2010 11:05 Comments || Top||

#4  The statement released by the defeated judges just drips of the usual elitist self rationalization. If government derives its powers from the consent of the governed, so does its law. Note to the judges - 'outside interests' don't normally vote in Iowa [maybe Chicago, NJ, MA, et al], look to your own.
Posted by: Procopius2k || 11/04/2010 12:19 Comments || Top||

#5  "If the Iowa Supreme Court will do this to marriage, every one of our freedoms, including gun rights and private property, is in danger of being usurped by activist judges who are unelected officials."

This statement is one to contemplate. Other freedoms would be in danger also of being usurped by activist judges such as freedom of religion, freedom of speech, due process, etc.
