Hugh Hefner, the founder of Playboy Enterprises, announced a Christmas engagement with his current girlfriend and former Playmate.

"When I gave Crystal (Harris) the ring, she burst into tears," he posted on Twitter. "Yes, the ring I gave Crystal is an engagement ring."

Harris, 24, was Playboy Playmate of the Month back in December 2009. Hefner, 84, is known for his love life and has been married twice before, both times ending in divorce.

Gas heater suffocates Jordan wedding night couple
[Emirates 24/7] A newly-wed Jordanian couple died from suffocation on Saturday after they left a gas heater turned on overnight, a security official said.

"The newlyweds died from suffocation at dawn on Saturday after they inhaled carbon dioxide emitted from the gas heater in their room," in the northern province of Zarqa, said local civil defence chief Colonel Mohammed al-Malaba.

"The 24-year-old groom and his 16-year-old bride had just celebrated their wedding yesterday (Friday)," Malaba said, quoted by Jordan's state news agency Petra.

Such tragedies are common in Jordan where many families use low-cost oil and gas heaters. In 2009, eight people were killed in 60 similar accidents.

Thousands flee Ivory Coast for Liberia
About 14,000 people have fled Ivory Coast to neighbouring Liberia following last month's disputed Ivorian presidential election, the UN says.
If Liberia is your oasis ...
It says it is prepared for a total of 30,000 refugees in the region.

Most of those fleeing are supporters of Alassane Ouattara, who is recognised internationally as the new president.

The spokeswoman for the UN refugee agency (UNHCR), Fatoumata Lejeune-Kaba, told the BBC that most of those who had left Ivory Coast since the 28 November election had come from villages in the west of the country. She said they had been walking for days to escape tensions they feared could explode into violence, and the flow was continuing.

A UNHCR statement added: "With their numbers growing, the humanitarian needs are increasing for the mostly women and children refugees as well as for the villagers hosting them."

Earlier Mr Ouattara urged the armed forces to protect civilians against attack from "the militias and foreign mercenaries that are spilling Ivorian blood". He said perpetrators of recent violence would be prosecuted and invited investigators from the International Criminal Court to the country.

UN officials say at least 170 people have been killed in recent attacks linked to the Ivorian armed forces, who remain publicly loyal to Mr Gbagbo.

Muslim ham complaint thrown out
A PROSECUTOR has thrown out a complaint made by a Muslim family against a geography teacher who mentioned pork in their son’s class.

The teacher was explaining how cold climate in Granada highlands helps to preserve local Serrano ham.

The Children’s Prosecutor of Algeciras, Juan Cisneros, described the complaining pupil’s attitude as ‘abusive, sectarian, capricious and inadmissible’ and ordered the denouncement to be archived.

He said: “There is not even the minimal indication of any type of crime.”

The prosecutor went on to condemn the media storm created by the pupil’s parents and their opponents. He described the public’s interest in the case as ‘worrying’.

To me, that means to just stay away from them and not eat them.

#4  Many food prohibitions are/were very valid in societies without refrigeration or canned storage technology or where fuels are not available to thoroughly cook the foods to rid them of parasites. Many foods will kill you if not properly prepared or stored. Most Americans don't seem to be aware of the dangers any longer.

#6  tipover: the trichinosis argument was used by the German High Critics many, many years ago, to rationally explain why Jews refrained from pork.

However, it was later roundly refuted by Hebraic scholars, who explained that it was the swine's behavior and class of animal that made it unclean.

Interestingly, some religious scholars have suggested that a modernist reason for rejecting pork, is that swine are too intelligent of an animal, so eating pork is a bit too much like eating human.

As an aside, the intelligence scale is currently: humans, apes, dolphins, pigs. Dogs are about 13th.

Actually, when Daddy lived (briefly) on the moshav in what was then Palestine, they grew rabbits for food, what with everyone being poor, hungry, secular Zionists (the poor religious Zionists lived elsewhere). But to protect the sensibilities of those who were sensitive, they referred to the rabbits as "zebras".

#14  Pig farms were extremely important as a meat source between 1948 and 1963 in Israel, a lot of the secular kibbutzim had swine herds. In 1963, the Israeli government passed laws against pig farming in Israel with certain exceptions for Christian villages, and medical research animals.

Belarus arrests air force chief
[Pak Daily Times] Belarus has nabbed the head of its air force on suspicion of abuse of authority, the defence ministry said, without saying if the arrest had any link to a crackdown after post-election protests.

The ministry's statement said Major General Igor Azarenok, the commander of the Air Force and Air Defence, had been jugged according to an article of the criminal code on abuse and negligence of authority. The statement, posted on the ministry's website late Friday, gave no further details over the timing and circumstances of the arrest.

Belarus is currently holding hundreds of people over their involvement in the protests on December 19 against the re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko in polls denounced by Western observers as deeply flawed. Those jugged include a large swathe of the country's liberal opposition elite and several Western countries has warned Lukashenko risks total isolation if the crackdown continues.

Although it gave no details on the top general's arrest, the defence ministry statement did however provide a long explanation over how the levels of crime in the Belarus armed forces "were amongst the lowest in the world".

'Anchor Baby' to Face Scrutiny in Congress
WASHINGTON -- The end of the year means a turnover of House control from Democratic to Republican and, with it, Congress' approach to immigration.

In a matter of weeks, Congress will go from trying to help young, illegal immigrants become legal to debating whether children born to parents who are in the country illegally should continue to enjoy automatic U.S. citizenship.
A turn, mind you, most americans agree with.
Sure, but there's that Constitution thingy to reckon with on the subject. Congress would have to pass a law stating that anyone illegally in this country is not covered by the Constitution, to which the courts would likely object.
The issue is in the 'citizenship clause' of the 14th amendment:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

While a child of illegal immigrants is born in the U.S., it isn't completely clear that said child is subject to U.S. jurisdiction. For example, a child born here to a foreign diplomat clearly is not subject to our jurisdiction and so is not granted citizenship. The people who argue the point say that the child of illegals is subject to (say) Mexican jurisdiction, and so should not be granted U.S. citizenship.
Such a hardened approach -- and the rhetoric certain to accompany it -- should resonate with the GOP faithful who helped swing the House in Republicans' favor. But it also could further hurt the GOP in its endeavor to grab a large enough share of the growing Latino vote to win the White House and the Senate majority in 2012.
I don't know - I think a number of LEGAL Latinos will understand it. The republicans have to remind them that their identity is being hijacked (with the media's help) by the illegals.
But, how many of the current Latino citizenry arrived illegally, and were later regularized? Would 20% be an over-optimistic estimate?
Certainly a fair number.
Legislation to test interpretations of the 14th Amendment as granting citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants will emerge early next session. That is likely to be followed by attempts to force employers to use a still-developing web system, dubbed E-Verify, to check that all of their employees are in the U.S. legally.

There could be proposed curbs on federal spending in cities that don't do enough to identify people who are in the country illegally and attempts to reduce the numbers of legal immigrants.

Democrats ended the year failing for a second time to win passage of the Dream Act, which would have given hundreds of thousands of young illegal immigrants a chance at legal status.
Those illegal aliens (not immigrants!) already have a chance at legal status - its called the Immigration Process.
House Republicans will try to fill the immigration reform vacuum left by Democrats with legislation designed to send illegal immigrants packing and deter others from trying to come to the U.S.

#1  Obama would most likely veto any Congressional legislation dealing with illegals. He would be afraid of losing potential Latino votes. There is an assumption by both parties that the Latino population is homogeneous--I'm not so sure. A POTUS veto can be overridden if 2/3 of both houses of Congress pass the legislation. However, I don't see that happening at this time.

#2  Importantly, Justice Thomas wrote a very impressive defense of a *different* part of the 1st section of the 14th Amendment. The first part of the 1st section, in bold below, is the problematic 'citizenship clause'.

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

This second part of the first section, italicized, is essential to the federal government being able to *prevent* abusive behavior to the people by the individual States.

As far as Thomas is concerned, this part, not the first part, is very near and dear to his heart, and to all black Americans.

But it goes beyond that right now, in a critical way, because it also highlights the need for its flip side, some way for the individual States to protect the public from an abusive and arrogant federal government.

So the bottom line is that we cannot just throw out the first section of the 14th Amendment. In fact, if the opportunity presents itself, a new amendment should *enlarge* on the idea of the 14th Amendment, to protect the people from the federal government.

The issue is in the 'citizenship clause' of the 14th amendment:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.


As this was to ensure that slaves and the children of slaves would be ensured citizenship and as there are no longer any living slaves who are having children, this portion of the 14th amendment should be stricken.

#4  Methinks a big effort to overturn the anchor-baby feature of federal law is little more than a tapdance through a minefield. I'm guessing there's been enough case law since the 1860's to establish a precedent that any person born on US soil is a US citizen, so any legal argument that the 14th Amendment doesn't confirm birthright citizenship would probably not prevail in court.

Any attempt to change the text of the 14th via another amendment would run headlong into the DNC/ACLU/media/racial-grievance industry axis.
The GOP has nothing to gain traveling that road; all they'd accomplish is giving the aforementioned rogues' gallery of Quislingcrat allies a golden opportunity to pound, pound, pound the message over a multi-year period that Republicans and any other opponents of open borders are "evil, heartless fascists." Better to somehow work out a means of forcing Ogabe's hand on workplace immigration enforcement, or to put such legislation through after he's hopefully run out of office in 2012.

If illegals can't find or keep jobs because of workplace enforcement you'll not only reduce the supply from south of the Rio Grande, but you'll also enjoy the benefits of "self deportation." both of which will in time greatly diminish the anchor-baby issue's impact.

If France were to have some kind of beef concerning a child born to French citizens in the states, would they be told to FOAD?

If France had some kind of beef about any other child born to full American citizens in the US, would that concern hold the same weight as it would to the child born to French citizens?

Suppose that child goes back to France with its parents. Do we tax that child for the rest of its life on its global earnings as the US does to me?

I'm 99% certain that the idea that "anybody born on US soil is a US citizen" is a recent liberal interpretation, or at least an interpretation that kept cases out of courts years ago rather than dealing with a bunch of chatter in the legal system.

This idea has to go.

Children of parents who are here in a visitors visa shouldn't get automatic citizenship - and neither should illegal aliens.

#9  "The Fourteenth Amendment (Amendment XIV) to the United States Constitution was adopted on July 9, 1868 as one of the Reconstruction Amendments.

Its Citizenship Clause provides a broad definition of citizenship that overruled the decision in Dred Scott v. Sandford (1857), which held that blacks could not be citizens of the United States.

Its Due Process Clause prohibits state and local governments from depriving persons (individual and corporate) of life, liberty, or property without certain steps being taken. This clause has been used to make most of the Bill of Rights applicable to the states, as well as to recognize substantive rights and procedural rights.

Its Equal Protection Clause requires each state to provide equal protection under the law to all people within its jurisdiction. This clause later became the basis for Brown v. Board of Education (1954), the Supreme Court decision which precipitated the dismantling of racial segregation in the United States.

The amendment also includes a number of clauses dealing with the Confederacy and its officials.

The above from Wikipedia. The utility of that amendment has how expired and it is time to strike it from the Constitution. It is being used for purposes completely unintended by the people who wrote it.

I am quite positive they didn't mean for it to allow pregnant women to flock to the US to have babies so they can claim citizenship. As all the people this law was meant to deal with are now dead and gone, so should this amendment be dead and gone.

That is the part upon which the means of 'interpretation' can be applied. If one has to 'technically' be in the possession of a passport, that implies which sovereign entity has 'normal' jurisdiction over the person. It is an agreement between sovereign entities that permits by papers the transit of its citizens through borders. While anyone is normally subject to the immediate laws of the land they are in, they are still subject to laws of their home country even though outside of it and are accountable for any and all transgressions of those laws. Commit an act of treason or sedition outside the normal borders and [exempting the bungling application of American authorities] and you'll quickly see who claims jurisdiction. This is why a child born of, say, a French couple in the US would file papers with their embassy to move junior quickly into French jurisdiction. The same affair occurred literally thousands of times for our military service members stationed overseas who had to file papers with the American embassies when births happened at bases across the globe.

That overpaid queen of daytime TV is opening her mouth again--and when she does, it usually includes praise for President Obama. In a new interview with Parade magazine, the talk show queen, who recently refocused the priorities of America by denying in an interview that she was a lesbian, offers nothing but support for Obama. Winfrey says that she is pleased as can be with everything that number 44 has thus far accomplished in his first two years. Declaring that she's not been disappointed in anything Obama has so far done in office, Winfrey also took the time to scold her fellow Americans by reminding them that they should instead be grateful for everything Obama has done.

NEW YORK – In the United States, the number of people receiving food stamps jumped 16 percent over 2009, CNN Money reports. That translates into 14 percent of the U.S. population — one out of every seven Americans — now use food stamps to feed their families.

In some states, including Mississippi, New Mexico, Oregon and Tennessee, that number is even higher, with one out of five state residents getting food stamps. Washington, D.C., has the highest number of people at 21.5 percent using food stamps.

“The high unemployment rate caused the high participation rate,” said Dottie Rosenbaum with the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. The 9.8 percent unemployment rate isn’t the only thing contributing to the hike in food stamp usage. Some states have changed their poverty definitions, which threw the net wider on participants.

Helping fund the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program across the country is the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which funneled $10 billion into the program. The U.S. Department of Agriculture finds that the average food stamp user gets $133 monthly in assistance.

The Recovery Act hiked the maximum food stamp benefit 13.6 percent, which means around $20 to $24 per month per person. In addition to more people receiving food stamps, the federal government has extended unemployment benefits for 13 months.

#12  Ironically as all get out, this new "Food Safety and Modernization Act" law that just passed the lame duck congress, will make it much more difficult for good people to set up bread lines without a federal license and permission from the government.

How fourth world-ish of them, to deny food to opponents of the government, which is the only thing this legislation offers. Is it any surprise that it was passed by a voice vote, not a recorded vote?

Obama visits troops during low-key Christmas in Hawaii
President Obama enjoyed a quiet Christmas with his family and friends in Hawaii, visiting with service members at a military base and taking in some NBA basketball on the third full day of what has been a low-key visit to his home state.

As he has during past visits, Obama made the short trip from his rental home in Kailua to the Marine Corps Base Hawaii.

The president and first lady used the weekly video address to encourage Americans to show support for the military this holiday season.

"America's brave servicemen and -women represent a small fraction of our population. But they and the families who await their safe return carry far more than their fair share of the burden," Obama said. "Let's all remind them this holiday season that we're thinking of them — and that America will forever be here for them, just as they've been there for us."
