IRS warned Champ: 'Illegal to pay ObamaCare subsidies to insurance companies'
In a sworn deposition newly made public, the IRS's Chief Risk Officer David Fisher told the House Ways and Means Committee that he had raised concerns to the Obama administration in 2014 when it was about to authorize subsidies to insurance companies as part of ObamaCare, a move which a judge ruled was illegal in early May.

Fisher's testimony suggests the White House knew it was breaking the law when it decided to go forward with the subsidies. He testified to telling administration officials that "there was no clear reference in the section regarding the cost-sharing reduction payments to the Internal Revenue Code in the Affordable Care Act" and the "cost-sharing reduction payments are not linked to the Internal Revenue Code, as far as I could tell, directly anywhere."

If this all sounds obscure and complicated, that's because it is. Two years ago, the White House asked Congress for money to subsidize insurance companies participating in ObamaCare. The payments, designed to cover the costs of insuring people whose income was at or below 400 percent of the poverty line, were authorized by the Affordable Care Act but never appropriated by the legislature, which holds the power of the purse.

In other words, the concept of the subsidies was legal, but actually paying them was not, absent additional action from Congress. Bonnie Kristian

EgyptAir plane made 3 emergency landings in the 24 hours before it crashed
[Bus Insider] The EgyptAir plane that mysteriously disappeared in the Mediterranean on May 19 with 66 people on board made three emergency landings in the 24 hours before the crash, the French broadcaster France 3 reports. The report has yet to be confirmed by government or airspace authorities.

The plane used for the EgyptAir Flight 804 connecting Paris to Cairo reportedly had to turn around three times and perform emergency landings on each occasion while travelling among Eritrea, Egypt, Tunisia, and Paris.

Emergency signals indicated a problem on board shortly after takeoff each time, prompting the plane to turn around, France 3 reports.

A technical verification on the ground took place after each landing, but no problems were found and the plane continually took off again and continued on its route, according to the information obtained by France 3. The French newspaper Le Parisien also reported this information.

#2  One time it took us 3 days to get to Barber's Point, HI from NASWI. took off, nav system went TU, landed in North Island. RON #1.

Took off again Nav sys crashed, landed in Alameda. RON #2. Took off, nav system failed at the 55% distance waypoint, did DR to BP ( glad island hadn't done the continental drift thingie).

As a bonus, the day after we landed in BP the big 1989 earthquake took out the Alameda hotel we were staying in.

So multiple emergency landings can happen.

#3  But EgyptAir ruled out a mechanical issue within the first minute or two and they would have nothing to hide, right?

Suggesting an explosion must be because of terrorists assumes nothing on board would otherwise explode which seems dubious when there is jet fuel and 3rd world maintenance involved.

And still no terrorists have claimed credit.

Placentophagy? Yes, she's definately nuts
[The Clarion-Ledger] Almost immediately after she found out she was pregnant, Brandon resident Jordan Thiering began preparing for her baby. She bought outfits and stocked up on cloth diapers.

She and husband Doug assembled baby furniture and decorated the nursery with the name they had chosen for their son; they would call him Roman, middle name to be determined. They packed a bag, ready for that moment they had to rush off to the hospital. In a multitude of ways, Thiering was prepared for her baby's arrival.

One thing she was not prepared for, however, was to go to court. At 33 weeks pregnant, Thiering had to get a court order giving her the rights to her placenta.

"I grew my baby, I grew my placenta," Thiering said. "There should be no one that can tell me what I can or can’t do with it."

Thiering said she was going over her birth plan with her OB-GYN in March when she mentioned she wanted to encapsulate her placenta. After a postpartum friend told Thiering she put her placenta in a smoothie, the mom-to-be began to look into the idea.

Why this Midwest town is thriving when so many aren't - opens to video
[USA Today] FAIRFIELD, Iowa -- Take a walk around this town's bustling square and you'll see an array of businesses that would rival some shopping malls.

On one corner sits a coffee shop that roasts its beans in house. Down the block is a store specializing in sustainable children's clothing and toys. Along another strip is a women's boutique, a Verizon store and a nutrition company.

The town's retail center also is home to a salon, a consignment store, a furniture store and an art gallery. Just off the square is a pet spa, a natural remedy store and a photography studio.

For those looking for a bite to eat: a Thai restaurant, an Indian cafe, an Italian spot and a joint peddling pizza and steak.

Cash-only doctors abandon the insurance system
[MONEY.CNN] Fed up with declining payments and rising red tape, a small but growing number of doctors is opting out of the insurance system completely. They're expecting patients to pony up with cash.

Some doctors who have gone that route love it, saying they can spend more time with and provide higher-quality care to their patients. Health advocates are skeptical, worrying that only the wealthy will benefit from this system.
An absurd concern playing into the idea that government-mandated insurance provides inferior patient care. This is a vile canard, as President Obama promised it will be ever so much better. Besides, every patient who chooses the concierge route is one less the official systems need to take care of.
In Wichita, Kan., 32-year old family physician Doug Nunamaker switched to a cash-only basis in 2010 after taking insurance for five years. ("Cash-only" is a loose description. Nunamaker accepts payment by debit or credit card too.)

Under the traditional health insurance system, a large staff was required just to navigate all the paperwork, he said. That resulted in high overhead, forcing doctors like Nunamaker to take on more patients to cover costs. Plus, the amount insurance companies were willing to pay for procedures was declining, leading to a vicious cycle.

"The paperwork, the hassles, it just got to be overwhelming," Nunamaker said. "We knew that we had to find a better way to practice."

#1  I know of several doctors that you just pay a monthly fee for. You can see them 2-3 times a year for $25/month. Extra visits aren't that much more and all added up is a fuckload cheaper than a monthly insurance premium.

I expect to see more and more of this. Until the insurance companies start seeing too much business go the cash only doctor's way and have their paid lawmakers outlaw it.

Europe
Pro-Russian Rebels Claim Fresh Ukraine Assault
[An Nahar] Ukraine's pro-Russian eastern gunnies on Wednesday accused Kiev's soldiers of launching a new blitz near a prized but long-obliterated airport in the separatists' de facto capital of Donetsk.

The claim appears to fit with a mounting corpse count reported by the pro-Western leadership in Kiev and foreign monitors from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).

The gunnies seized the Donetsk airport at a heavy cost in January 2015.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko soon vowed to win back the key trophy of the 25-month war -- a pledge that clashed with Washington's efforts to bring peace to the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
's backyard.

A rebel fighter who identified himself by the nom de guerre Moskva (Moscow) said the Ukrainian assault began from positions just north of Donetsk last Saturday.

"The entire (airport) terminal was hit by air defense guns," the krazed killer told AFP.

These heavy weapons were meant to have been withdrawn from the frontline dividing rebel-run regions from the rest of Ukraine within days of the signing of a February 2015 truce.

That ceasefire helped contain the worst violence but failed to bring a halt to one of Europe's bloodiest conflicts since the 1990s Balkans wars.

UC-Irvine Conservatives To Hand Out Pacifiers At Campus Safe Zone Training
[DailyCaller] Controversy has followed commentator Milo Yiannopoulos on his “Most Dangerous Faggot” tour, and his Thursday appearance at the University of California, Irvine is proving to be no exception.

UC-Irvine College Republicans are planning to distribute 100 infant pacifiers at a school-sanctioned “safe zone training” event taking place just hours before the Yiannopoulos event, UC-Irvine College Republicans said in a press release.

The Gerber Baby pacifiers will include an attached label with the caption, “I survived! Milo tour 2016.”

UC-Irvine Republican Club president, Ariana Rowlands told the Orange County Register she fears for her fellow students who seem “dominated” by political correctness and often only hear the left’s side of the story.

The students' parents complained to the Government High School Gurmani in Muzaffargarh district, whose head said "the 40-year-old teacher had been suspended after an inquiry".

But four days after the original complaint, the parents went to police to accuse Ahmed of blasphemy, according to local authorities. The school said no mention of blasphemy had been made before the police complaint.

Following the complaint by Bilal, father of the sixth-grade students, police have registered an FIR at Mehmoodkot cop shoppe.

DPO Muzaffargarh Owais Malik, while talking to Dawn, said "we have registered the case to save his life".

Protest over rape, murder of Hindu girl
[DAWN] HYDERABAD: Civil society activists on Tuesday held a protest demonstration against the killing of a 16-year-old woman after alleged sexual assault on her in Khipro town of Sanghar district a day earlier.

Carrying placards inscribed with slogans for justice, they held the demonstration outside the local press club.

Speaking to them, Advocate Bhagchand Bheel, Kirshna Kumari, Mukesh Meghwar and others said that the victim member of the Bheel community had gone into the farmland in Kiria Colony of Khipro town on Monday where she was sexually assaulted and then rubbed out.

They accused a young man, said to be the son of a police constable, of being the culprit. They said that the suspect was detained following registration of a case at the Khipro cop shoppe but police were weakened the case under pressure to ensure his release. They demanded justice and exemplary punishment to the culprit.

An Ammodor Is The Coolest New Product
[Daily Caller] Are you a cigar smoker? If you are, you know how disappointing it is to light up a dry cigar. A humidor is a must-own. But inexpensive ones don't really work that well and also just look cheap. What to do?

There's this new product called the Ammodor, and it's the coolest product you have never heard about until right now. An Ammodor is a so-called "tactical cigar humidor." What does that mean? Ammodors are made from legitimate U.S. military surplus metal ammunition cans. They are "combat tested humidors and are rugged enough to be tossed around during any outdoor adventure; while sexy enough to be the centerpiece of your office desk." Seriously awesome. And until June 6, they are on sale at Touch of Modern.

Bezos thinks we need to build industrial zones in space in order to save Earth
[RECODE.NET] Elon Musk wants us to build human colonies on Mars. Jeff Bezos has a slightly more measured take.

Onstage at the Code Conference on Tuesday, the Amazon founder and CEO said that we have to start bringing parts of the industrial economy to space in order "to save Earth."

"Let me assure you, this is the best planet. We need to protect it, and the way we will is by going out into space," he told Recode Editor at large Walt Mossberg. "You don't want to live in a retrograde world where we have to freeze population growth."

Bezos says tasks that require lots of energy shouldn't be handled on Earth. Instead, we should perform them in space, and that will happen within the next few hundred years.

"Energy is limited here. In at least a few hundred years ... all of our heavy industry will be moved off-planet," Bezos added. "Earth will be zoned residential and light industrial. You shouldn't be doing heavy energy on earth. We can build gigantic chip factories in space."

#1  We need both Industrial Zones + Colonies, etc. aka Space Markets, in order to help justify space travel, i.e. routine Exploration + Colonization. NO USE TO BUILD FLYING CARS + SPACE PLANES, ETC. WID NO MISSION, NO PURPOSE, NO ONE + NO WHERE IN SPACE TO GO.

"IFF YOU BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME", CORRECT!?
Posted by: JosephMendiola || 06/02/2016 1:58 Comments || Top||

#2  Well, yes. Apply 3% annual growth (and hence energy consumption) starting from our current 12 and bit TW, and see how long it takes before we're using the equivalent of all the solar energy that hits the planet... about 325 years. If we do whatever we do earthside, all that waste heat has to go somewhere, unless we've found a way to repeal the laws of thermodynamics.
Of course if we are doing 15,000 times as much stuff in the 2340s, well, I don't know where I'm going to put it. My spare room is already full.

#7  It's not really relevant that it goes into space. Sure it does, but we reach a new thermal equilibrium. To pick some round numbers, if in the year 2400, after 384 years of ~3% growth, we're somehow using 1,000,00 TW then this is the equivalent of 6 times current solar insolation - even if the entire planet is encased in solar panels, we'd still be generating the equivalent of another 5 suns beating down on us with our fusion reactors or whatever. The average surface temperature of the planet would be about 155 Celsius.

Mobile, AL math teacher urbanizes math exam
[Mail] An Alabama middle school teacher has been placed on administrative leave after handing out a 10-question math quiz filled with references to drugs, violence and prostitutes to her eighth grade class.
This is a joke that's been around for 30 years. Snopes sez
"The Internet humor piece variously entitled "The L.A. Math Proficiency Test" or "The City of Los Angeles High School Math Proficiency Exam" has been part of online lore since at least 1993, and some of our readers recall having seen photocopied versions of it as far back as the mid-1980s... Obvious humor or not, the "test" has landed a number of educators into trouble over the years. The Canadian National Post reported that a teacher at the Juniper School in Thompson, Manitoba, was suspended from her duties in June 2002 for distributing this test to students."
Maybe this one is true, but it seems like we've seen the same story before. The Mail might have bitten on an Onion, if y'know what I mean.

Joanne Bolser was suspended after one of her language arts students at Burns Middle School in Mobile took a picture of the quiz and sent it to his mom, according to WPMI. Bolser is a longtime educator who is set to retire this year.

One of the questions in the quiz, known online as the 'LA Math Proficiency Test', refers to 'Tyrone' who 'knocked up four girls in the gang'.

'There are 20 girls in his gang,' the question continues. 'What is the exact percentage of girls Tyrone knocked up?'

Another references a drug dealer named Leroy, who 'sells an 8 ball to Antonio for $320 and 2 grams to Juan for $85 per gram'.

'What is the street value of the rest of his hold?' it then asks.

There are also references to 'Ramon' and his frequent 'drive-by shootings', 'Pedro' serving six years for murder, Desmond and his stolen BMW and Corvette cars, and Dwayne - who 'pimps 3 ho's'.

'If the price is $85 per trick, how many tricks per day must each ho turn to support Dwayne's $800 per day crack habit,' the question then asks.

Erica Hall, the mother who received a picture of the test from her son on Friday, said she couldn't believe it when she saw the questions.
