These Are The Most Dangerous Cities In The US
[ZH] Our research reveals the 100 most dangerous cities in America with 25,000 or more people, based on the number of violent crimes per 1,000 residents. Violent crimes include rape, armed robbery, and aggravated assault. The data used for this research are the number of violent crimes reported to have occurred in each city, and the population of each city. Based on the latest national data available at the time of publication, representing calendar year 2021 and released in October 2022, this report reveals interesting patterns about safety from crime in America.

This year, Monroe, LA was replaced by Bessemer, AL, dropping from its two-year ranking as the number one most violent city in America to the ranking of third. Bessemer has 33.18 violent crimes per 1,000 population, and the chance of being a violent crime victim is 1 in 30.

Many of the dangerous cities on the list this year have appeared on past lists. For those who live in these cities, NeighborhoodScout can help you find the safest neighborhoods nearby any city using our Create feature. For example, by searching for the lowest crime rate within 15 miles of the number one most dangerous city, Bessemer, AL you can find the neighborhood of New Hope in Birmingham, AL is safer than 99% of neighborhoods nationwide.

Academy of Motion Pictures mum on how Jews fit into new inclusion standards
[IsraelTimes] Rules taking effect for next year’s Best Picture award aim to encourage diversity in film industry, raising questions and criticism

The organization that awards the Oscars has refused to comment on whether Jews can count as an under-represented group under its new inclusion standards that aim to boost diversity in Hollywood.

Jews have long had a significant presence in the American entertainment industry, but the new standards raise questions about on-screen representation and the specifics of their implementation and eligibility for awards: For instance, will a Holocaust film count as a movie about an ethnic group? Can Hasidic Jews be considered a minority?

US Tracks New Strain of Covid-19
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Thursday that it was tracking a new, highly mutated lineage of the virus that causes COVID-19, Rooters reported.
So dig out your mask and increase your booster shot frequency to once or twice a week.
The lineage is named BA.2.86, and has been detected in the United States, Denmark and Israel, the CDC said in a post on messaging platform X (formerly Twitter).

"As we learn more about BA.2.86, CDC’s advice on protecting yourself from COVID-19 remains the same," the agency said.
"Stay inside, don't go to election campaigns, give your ballot to the nice young people - they'll fill it out for you"
The World Health Organization (WHO) earlier on Thursday said in a post on X that it had classified BA.2.86 as a "variant under monitoring" due to the large number of mutations it carries.

Gavin Newsom declares state of emergency, sheriff orders evacuations as Hurricane Hilary bears down on California: Panic buying as 42M brace for 'catastrophic flooding'
No relief of Habeas Corpus, so I guess there's still constraints on looter shooting.
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency as California braces for Hurricane Hilary to hit today.

Residents in the south of the state have been given evacuation orders ahead of the historic storm making landfall around 1pm.

The governor's office has tried to reassure them extensive preparations are underway, including the deploying of 'more than 7,500 boots on the ground'.

But panic buying has set in and some supermarket shelves in San Diego and Los Angeles were stripped bare of essentials such as water and tinned food.

The tropical storm, the first set to make landfall in California since 1939, could impact more than 42million people.

The state has prepared water rescue teams, California National Guard personnel and flood fighting equipment ahead of Hilary's arrival, officials said.

Hurricane Hilary is currently registered as a Category 1 storm, downgraded from a Category 2 on Saturday night.

The National Hurricane Center warned Hilary could bring 'catastrophic and life-threatening flooding' to Baja California and the Southwestern US.

The threat has triggered California's first ever tropical storm warning extending from the state's southern border to just north of Los Angeles.

The storm may dump more than a year's worth of rain on parts of the Southwest, the National Weather Service has warned.

Part of Nevada and Southern California may see as much as 10 inches of rainfall hit in a matter of hours.

Evacuation notices have been issued to residents in Oak Glen, Forest Falls, Mountain Home Village, Angelus Oaks, and NE Yucaipa by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's office.

On Saturday night the storm had sped up, moving at around 18 mph, around 500 miles southeast of San Diego.

It is expected to continue to weaken as it moves north-northwestward through cooler waters toward Southern California.

However, the harshest effects are expected later on Sunday and into Monday including possible winds of 90 miles per hour.

Schools in Mexico's Cabo San Lucas were being readied to use as temporary shelters while police patrolled closed beaches in the Baja California Sur state to keep swimmers out.

#6  The 'weathertainment" complex has to build up every potential storm. Yet another of the "tropical disturbances" they have been avidly tracking is about to become a hurricane in the middle of the Atlantic - where it will affect no one but mariners who probably don't belong at sea.

#7  As of three hours ago, Hilary was downgraded to a Tropical Storm.

The worst flooding will be in low population areas east of the San Diego and LA metro areas. Also, the worst wind will be in those places. For example, Death Valley will likely get 3" of rain and that will form a long temporary lake and prevent travel in the National Monument area.

China 'warns' Taiwan with fresh military drills attack after Lai's visit to US
[GEO.TV] China began a series of military drills in the vicinity of Taiwan as a furious response to the island's separatist forces over the recent visit of Taiwan's Vice President William Lai to the United States, which is regarded as Beijing's key rival.

The military exercises were referred to as a "stern warning" to Chinese opponent separatist forces on the island state, which the country sees as its own territory.

In a brief statement on Saturday morning, the Eastern Theatre Command of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), which is in charge of the island of Taiwan, announced that it was conducting joint naval and air combat readiness patrols around the island.

Beijing hasn't ruled out using force to seize control of the democratic, autonomous island.

Moreover, Beijing has boosted military exercises around Taiwan over the recent years in response to what it considers "collusion" between the capital Taipei and Washington.

"The patrols and exercises serve as a stern warning to the collusion of ’Taiwan independence separatists with foreign elements and their provocations," the spokesperson said.

The Eastern Theatre Command stated that the PLA would conduct joint naval and air force drills with a focus on "actual combat capabilities" and ship-aircraft coordination to test seizing control of air and sea spaces, reported Al Jazeera.

"The armed forces’ ability to fight in real combat conditions will be tested", a spokesperson for the eastern command told China’s state-run Xinhua news.

Taiwanese officials and analysts had said that the recent military action carried out by China was provoked by Taiwan's Vice President William Lai's visit to the United States.

Russia's Luna-25 spacecraft has crashed into the moon
[10 News] "Nailed it!"
The Russian space agency said it ran into trouble while preparing for its pre-landing orbit.
Russia's robot lander the Luna-25 spacecraft crashed into the moon after it had spun into uncontrolled orbit, the country's space agency Roscosmos reported on Sunday.

"The apparatus moved into an unpredictable orbit and ceased to exist as a result of a collision with the surface of the moon," read a statement from the agency.

Roscosmos said it lost contact with the spacecraft on Saturday after it ran into trouble while preparing for its pre-landing orbit after reporting an "abnormal situation " that its specialists were analyzing. "During the operation, an abnormal situation occurred on board the automatic station, which did not allow the maneuver to be performed with the specified parameters," the agency said in a Telegram post.

The spacecraft was scheduled to land on the south pole of the moon on Monday. The lunar south pole is of particular interest to scientists, who believe the permanently shadowed polar craters may contain frozen water in the rocks that future explorers could transform into air and rocket fuel.

The Russian lunar lander was racing to land on Earth's satellite ahead of an Indian spacecraft, launched on July 14. Both were expected to reach the moon between Aug. 21-23.

Only three governments have managed successful moon landings: the Soviet Union, the United States and China, but not on the moon's south pole. India and Russia have been racing to be the first countries to land there.

A previous Indian attempt to land at the moon's south pole in 2019 ended when the lander crashed into the moon's surface.

Roscosmos said it wanted to show Russia "is a state capable of delivering a payload to the moon," and "ensure Russia's guaranteed access to the moon's surface."

Sanctions imposed on Russia since it began its actions in Ukraine make it harder for the country to access Western technology, impacting its space program. The Luna-25 was initially meant to carry a small moon rover but that idea was abandoned to reduce the weight of the craft for improved reliability, analysts said.

The Luna-25 launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome in Russia's Far East on Aug. 10. The spaceport is a pet project of Russian President Vladimir Putin and key to his efforts to make Russia a space superpower.

The launch earlier this month was Russia's first since 1976 when it was part of the Soviet Union.

Lebanon: Christian Parties Reject Summoning of Kahaleh Residents in Hezbollah Truck Incident
[ENGLISH.AAWSAT] Christian political parties in Leb
...an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
refused the summoning of any of the residents of the Kahaleh region to hear their testimonies about the incident of the Hezbollah ammunition truck that overturned in their town earlier this month.

The Army Intelligence had completed technical investigations, collected forensic evidence, and started listening to eyewitnesses.

A Hezbollah truck carrying ammunition overturned in the Christian-dominated area of Kahaleh last week, sparking festivities and tensions between the residents and Hezbollah members, leading to the death of two persons.

The Intelligence Directorate of the Lebanese Army has received a judicial request from the Public Prosecution to investigate the incident, collect evidence and question witnesses.

Security sources told Asharq al-Awsat that the hearing requests were sent two days ago and included all the parties, pointing out that Hezbollah responded and sent the truck’s protection team to the investigation, while the residents of Kahaleh were still refusing to present their testimonies.

The town’s municipality refused the summoning of its residents, stressing in a statement that the investigations "should not begin with the questioning of unarmed people, who were present at the time of the incident, but instead should focus on the gang that opened fire with machine guns", leading to the death of resident Fadi Bejjani.

Christian political parties supported the municipality’s position.

A member of the Strong Republic bloc, MP Ghayath Yazbek, said that the town of Kahaleh refused the summoning of a number of its residents for investigation before handing over Bejjani’s killers to justice.

For his part, the head of the Lebanese Kataeb party, MP Sami Gemayel, said that the "summoning of the people of Kahaleh, who were attacked in their own town, is unacceptable."

"We stand by the residents of Kahaleh and support their position. We will not remain silent," he said on X.
