Revolt of the Jacksonians

#1  Unless Pinkerton was adopted, he is of Scotch-Irish descent. That being said, I don't understand his pseudo-intellectual disdain for the Scotch-Irish. This article is the sort of thing that a professor puts out to curry favor with fellow academics by inflating their sense of intellectual and moral superiority. If he were true to his roots, he would know that most "Jacksonians" were not the target audience for and would be decidedly uncomfortable with "Team America". The people that I grew up with would dismiss him as a pompous a**hole and ignore him.

Identity politics is a load of crap when blacks and Hispanics practise it, and it's a load of crap when whites do it, too.

#5  Rule #1 when trying to establish or butress an argument, cite more than one source. Your own publication doesn't count as a second one. Mr. Pinkerton blew it .

Aside from the Yankee condescension (and a fetish about repeatedly saying 'F*ck'), there's plenty of blanket assertions here. Though he correctly termed it a "matter of honor", the Swift Vets were not so much pro-Bush as they were anti-Kerry. Also, the assertation that "some Jacksonians in California were among the 60 percent of Golden Staters who supported Proposition 71" is like saying there were Marxists in San Diego County who voted against Prop. 66 (repeal of the three-strikes law).

His fore-seeing a split between Jacksonians and libertarians is a no-brainer in any case. The latter would've voted for Kerry (or a Chilean bass) had he said "I've changed since 9/11".

Congratulations, Mr. Pinkerton. You can pick up your 'pompous windbag' plaque at the door.

IMHO, a lot of the Jacksonian impulse is libertarian. The "live and let live, but if you screw with me you die" philosophy is the heart of small-l libertarian. It's only the big-L Libertarians who turned it into a purer-than-thou game who insist on a split between classic American life and their ideals.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Sci-Fi Author Stephenson Nails the Red-Blue Divide
Via Glenn Reynolds.
From the Neal Stephenson novel Cryptonomicon. This is downright spooky:
Weirdly, the ones who adopted the sternest and most terrible Old Testament moral tone were the Modern Language Association types who believed that everything was relative and that, for example, polygamy was as valid as monogamy. The friendliest and most sincere welcome he'd gotten was from Scott, a chemistry professor, and Laura, a pediatrician, who, after knowing Randy and Charlene for many years, had one day divulged to Randy, in strict confidence, that, unbeknownst to the academic community at large they had been spiriting their three children off to church every Sunday morning, and had even had them baptized. . . .

Randy hadn't the faintest idea what these people thought of him and what he had done, but he could sense right away that, essentially, that was not the issue, because even if they thought he had done something evil, they at least had a framework, a sort of procedure manual, for dealing with transgressions. To translate it into UNIX system administration terms (Randy's fundamental metaphor for just about everything), the post-modern, politically correct atheists were like people who had suddenly found themselves in charge of a big and unfathomably complex computer system (viz. society) with no documentation or instructions of any kind, and so whose only way to keep the thing running was to invent and enforce certain rules with a kind of neo-Puritanical rigor, because they were at a loss to deal with any deviations from what they saw as the norm. Where as people who were wired into a church were like UNIX system administrators who, while they might not understand everything, at least had some documentation, some FAQs and How-tos and README files, providing some guidance on what to do when things got out of whack. They were, in other words, capable of displaying adaptability.
[Emphasis added]
Geez, that just about perfectly sums up the blue leftists and the red conservatives. And I say that as a non-Christian.

As displayed by the Kerryite who supposedly committed suicide yesterday, the Left is not "capable of displaying adaptability."

#1  I'm not impressed with Stephenson's writing. Maybe it's the editor in me, but this is clunky.
Posted by: Pappy || 11/07/2004 15:42 Comments || Top||

#2  Pappy - I haven't read the novel, though some people I respect couldn't put it down.

Yeah, his writing is sort of long-winded, but the descriptions of the "Modern Language Association types" and the others is dead on for the Left and the rest of us.

#3  He's good - his last one: "Quicksilver" I found ponderous.... "Cryptonomicon" was quirky and fun - 3 thumbs up

Could Arafat have AIDS?
A doc and medical blogger discuss why this might be true. Long but informative.

#1  Makes sense to me...

"I've looked a clouds from both sides now..."
Posted by: BigEd || 11/07/2004 1:18 Comments || Top||

#2  While difficult to prove, AIDS is still too good for Arafat. He needs to die from something far more painful, like a gut shot. However, if proof positive is available that Arafat was, indeed, camp as a row of tents, the Arab world should be made aware of it.

Arafat's particular brand of moral cancer cannot possibly rule out something so benign as AIDS. Such a diagnosis would only serve to point up his long-ago departure from any sort of traditionally acceptable Arab behaviour. Instead, we must face one simple fact; Arafat represents a mindset so corrupt as to make cancer, AIDS, ebola and the flesh-eating virus combined all look like underachievers by any standard measure.

Let us rejoice in Arafat's (most painful) death. It could not come any sooner, regardless of whatever the IDF might suggest.

#3  I don't know about rejoicing in a most painful death, seems still like pushing ones Karma envelope. But the thing that stands out to me is how bad the values of the paleo population must be to look to this maggot as a hero. Don't get me wrong---My sympathy meter zeroed out with the Paleos after they decided to fight and raise hell after getting almost the whole meal deal at Oslo. The problem is that Arafat has promoted whole generations now into a dead end, and it will take a new generation or two to unf**k the humanitarian and psychological mess that the Arafish left.

What a legacy! Buried in Jerusalem? Fie. Like I said in an earlier posting, he is hospital biohazard waste. Hey, calling the facts as I see 'em.

Alaska Paul, however much I truly respect your own wisdom and sagacious views regarding this world's screwed up circumstances, this is one bullet I'm willing to take for the team.

"Most painful," please. I'll happily take the consequences for us all. My first name is Christopher, and when the first six letters of your name spell "Christ" all further pain is of little or no surprise.

#5  No, but he could have died from it.

#6  I remember Arafat as the leader of the Palestinian terrorist groups who were regularly murdering people across Europe in 1972 and 1973. I was 6 years old then.

The next 32 years have been a continuous, shameful orgy of compromise by the West with that known terrorist chief. Oslo was but one late episode. He should have been killed a long time ago. Like Ceaucescu, like Saddam's sons...

#7  Spot on, Kalle. I have never felt any different about the maggot.

#8  It would be a good thing to have the Paleos have to acknowledge the cause of his death. "Camp as a row of tents"??? LOL!

#9  Is he dead yet? Is he dead yet? Is he dead yet? Is he dead yet?
Posted by: Deacon Blues || 11/07/2004 8:06 Comments || Top||

#10  Deacon Blues, I think he's been dead for a long time. If you ask about the resident incubus departure, probably since wednesday. Phrench want to pull the plug and get rid of the biohazard mass promptly.

#11  Just wondering how many millions of euros Arafat's protracted ICU stay is costing...and curious if that bill will ever be paid, and by whom.

#12  Just wondering how many millions of euros Arafat's protracted ICU stay is costing...and curious if that bill will ever be paid, and by whom.

I've heard that Suha has a thing for expensive hospitals. Maybe she'll kick down on the ICU bill out of all those stashed millions of hers.

[cue hysterical laughter]

She's probably out shopping for shoes to wear at her beloved wallet's husband's funeral. Funny how there was no mention of any bedside vigil by her. Too grief stricken, I suppose ...

#13  If the fish died before telling where the money's stashed, *all* the Paleos are going to be shopping at charity shops from now on...

#14  Right-O Tony. And the Swiss will say NOTHING about the accounts until their sorry financial asses are backed against the wall, like the situation with the Nazi victims. Then it is a protracted fight. Moral bankrupts like the Swiss bankers deserve a special place in Hell, like the Arafish. Neutral nation, my ass.

I dunno, AP. I suspect that, while it will take pressure, the gnomes of Zurich will roll over a lot faster than they did before.The Europeans may take a real interest considering who the money is supposed to belong to.
