An organized campaign to silence debate on Islam

By Asra Q. Nomani
Long, long piece in WaPo that makes clear that there really is a group dedicated to silencing dissident Muslims, controlling the debate in both Muslim-majority and western countries, and forcing the western media to heel. Ms. Nomani, an Indian born American Muslim, has been banging this drum for a long time, and her evidence in this piece is impressive. Worth keeping if you're tracking the WoT. Hat tip Instapundit.

#1  But[the Obama]administration isn’t framing extremism as a problem directly tied to Islam.

Partly because, with all due respect to the writer, it isn't. But also partly because it's a potential, politically-useful, weapon.

India-Pakistan
Essential steps
[DAWN] PAKISTANS civilian government and military have come together to fight terrorism with an integrated National Action Plan (NAP). Lessons learned from other countries wars against similar totalitarian movements can help us, as can utilising the UN Security Council.

The TTP and their offshoots originate from the mujahideen created in the 1980s by an alliance of the US, Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
and Pakistain to defeat the Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Some three decades later, jihadi culture permeates every part of society. Unravelling this legacy will require immediate and long-term measures with dedicated civilian and military resources.

Problematic penalty
[DAWN] WHEN an ambulance carrying the body of a Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistain
...a Sunni Deobandi organization, a formerly registered Pak political party, established in the early 1980s in Jhang by Maulana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi. Its stated goal is to oppose Shia influence in Pakistain. They're not too big on Brelvis, either. Or Christians. Or anybody else who's not them. The organization was banned in 2002 as a terrorist organization, but somehow it keeps ticking along, piling up the corpse counts...
Lion of Islam hanged in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
Central Prison is showered with rose petals by well-wishers as pictured in this newspaper on Friday it demonstrates how problematic the death penalty is in religiously inspired militancy and terrorism cases. It clearly cannot be a deterrent for murderous Moslems whose very missions either involve blowing themselves up or launching attacks in which death is a likely outcome.

Moreover, the hangings may only be inspiring other would-be bandidos bandidos Death Eaters given the faux martyr status bestowed by a certain fringe section of society upon those executed. All that the hangings have achieved so far is feed a growing appetite in society for vengeance rather than justice turning an already maimed populace into cheerleaders of death.

More broadly, the question that is still unanswered is, what of the governments National Action Plan and the range of other measures the government is meant to take to combat extremism and dismantle terrorist groups operating on Pak soil? Some initial steps have been taken, but nothing close to a coherent strategy has emerged yet and the government, for all its meetings and blurbs, does not appear to have the will or the capacity to develop one. Where there has been movement, it appears to occur largely because of the militarys initiative or insistence that the civilian-run side of the state take certain steps.

Surely, though, a militarised strategy to fight militancy and extremism cannot be a winning strategy. The PML-N government may have only reluctantly, and very belatedly, tried to own the fight against militancy, but being in charge of two governments in Punjab and the centre means the party leadership must play a central role. Where is the PML-N lacking? In nearly every department, starting from the interior ministry, which is still in the hands of a minister who fruitlessly pursued peace talks with the very same bandidos bandidos Death Eaters that the ministry must now take the fight to. The unwieldy committee approach to taking on militancy is another problem, with bureaucrats having an unhealthily large presence in many committees that could do with subject-specific expertise. Why, for example, is the police leadership so under-represented in the multiple committees that the PML-N has created? There is still time to correct course, beginning with admitting that execution is no answer and what the government really needs to do is speed up other aspects of the fight against terrorism.

#1  The solution is to sentence them to hard labor in a rendition facility in Germany working in a hog farm. That way, no one will touch the body, they can't be a martyr and who's going to throw rose petals on something that smells that bad?

Crossroads, again
[DAWN] HERES a speech fit for a chief:As you would remember, ever since I assumed office, I launched a campaign to rid the society of extremism, violence and terrorism and strived to project Islam in its true perspective.

By the grace of God Almighty our decision was absolutely correct. Our intentions were noble and God Almighty helped us. I am happy to say that the vast majority of Paks stood by this decision and supported our decision. I am proud of the realistic decision of our nation. What really pains me is that some religious Lion of Islam parties and groups opposed this decision. What hurts more was that their opposition was not based on principles. At a critical juncture in our history, they preferred their personal and party interests over national interests.

Sectarian terrorism has been going on for years.

Causes of Islamist militancy
[DAWN] AS terrorist violence from Islamic turbans spreads across the world, from Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
to Gay Paree, affected states are struggling to devise effective responses. So far, most of their responses have addressed the visible symptoms of the terrorist threat through military, police and intelligence measures. These are, of course, essential to stem the terrorist tide. Unfortunately, these responses are often insufficient or incorrect.

To develop the right responses, it is essential to honestly analyse and address the principal causes of Islamic terrorism.

#2  With all due respect to the author, I don't totally agree. Fascism can grow in vibrant economies and strong government as well as failed states. True, failed states grow faster but as evident with Iran, they had a strong economy and state, Fascism took over anyway. Fascism takes over when men refuse to stand up and stop it. This is happening in Europe right now. Fear of not being politically correct has most of the population silent. This is how it happens and until they stand up it will only get worse.

#3  When done "right" fascism can be quite popular. If you can identify and segregate a good target in the population you can then get the folks to rally round the party.......with all that means.

#1  Dude, if you haven't realized that American Journalism en masse signed out of the human race decades ago, you've had your head stuck up someplace where the sun don't shine.

#2  There's plenty of good journalism being committed in the blogosphere and conservative news sites. Which is why the liberal legacy media continue losing both market share and sales, with a resulting loss of ad revenue and employee numbers. German journalism is much more compliant to a shared Progressive outlook, so they may not have that invisible electronic component.

Nonetheless, the cowardice is egregious, and deserves to be highlighted, limned with foreign scorn.

#8  That's why we have the burg, to chop the crap out of the media.

The media has been slowly dissolving and corrupting itself for more than 20 years.

It's probably because they are all communists along with academia.

#9  One aspect the author doesn't mention is the blatant dereliction of duty on the side of all Western governments.

One of the fundamental raisons d'etre of government in a free society is the protection of the constitutional system and residents' rights and freedoms from interference by outside powers.

An individual resident of a Western nation cannot by himself ensure his physical safety in the face of threats by foreign governments.

If individuals organized themselves to create an effective defense they would necessarily create a structure supplanting the existing government. This would not be a solution.

The Western press corps' cowardice might be a problem but Western governments and alliances effectively siding with the enemy against their own citizens is a monumental scandal.

The Western political establishment is effectively telling the Islamic world that they won't run any risk of provoking a serious military response if they attack Sharia violating individuals in the West.

During the Cold War deterrence protected critics of communism from systematic enforcement of Soviet law in the West.

The Soviet Union recognized this and officially recognized Western rights and freedoms via the doctrine of peaceful coexistence.

In the 21st century however the Westen political class has peacefully acquiesced to a OIC Brezhnev doctrine.

Nuts!
