-Lurid Crime Tales-
Man bites dog (and a policeman)
Police say an officer and his dog were bitten by a man resisting arrest in Kansas City. Officer David Magruder tried to arrest the man, suspected of dodging a cab fare, early on Friday morning.
Soty - a German Shepherd dog, like this one - nearly lost his left ear

The man began to punch Mr Magruder, who then released police dog "Soty" from the patrol vehicle using a remote control.
They mean Officer Magruder, of course...
Soty bit the man, who then bit back, according to police, nearly taking off the dog's ear. He also bit Mr Magruder. The fight is said to have finally ended when support officers arrived on the scene and used a Taser stun gun to subdue the suspect. The dog's ear had to be stitched back on by a vet, but he has lost a small piece, according to the Kansas City Star newspaper, which carried the story. Mr Magruder also received bite injuries and was treated in hospital. "I've had people fight my dog before, but not bite him," Mr Magruder told the Kansas City Star. The suspect has been charged with stealing, resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer.
I'm with Mucky on this one: just wait till PETA gets on this guy's case... he'll be dinner...

Smoking ban to 'benefit' pub trade (?)
BANNING smoking in pubs, far from spelling the death knell for the drinks trade, will actually boost profits, according to a new survey. It claims that increased custom from the 'once a week' pub-goer - the largest group of pub patrons - would buoy profits. Last week the Executive outlined plans for a complete ban on smoking in enclosed public places, which is likely to be enforced within 18 months. The survey from KPMG and YouGov found that regular pub-goers are unlikely to be discouraged from going to their favourite haunts as a result of any ban.

More than 2,100 people took part in the survey, of whom a quarter were smokers. David Matthews, head of drinks at KPMG, said: "The key group of people within the survey is the 'once a week brigade'. Representing 56% of the survey base, they are the single largest group within the survey and thus have the most clout. "Sixty-five percent of them are in favour of a smoking ban and 29% believe they would visit pubs more often if a ban was introduced."

Even when balanced against an anticipated small loss of trade amongst more regular pub-goers, this indicates that landlords and pub companies will benefit from a net increase in trade. Punters would also be inclined to spend longer in a pub, on average, per visit if smoking was outlawed. Twenty-seven percent believe they would stay in the pub longer, compared with 20% who believe their visits would be shorter because of a ban.

#1  Fall off in trade in Ireland was, IIRC, about 20%, fairly shortly thereafte (have no idea what it is now). Why would Scotland be any different?

I've been in a few Scottish pubs with a fug so thick it was hard to breathe. The vast majority had fine atmospheres. The Virtuous have managed to crush freedom of choice, once again. What next?

#2  I call BS. If the smoke was going to be a factor in whether one stayed or left, it would be during the first few minutes. After a couple of drinks, they could pump CS gas in there and I ain't budging.

#3  David Matthews, head of drinks at KPMG??

How do I get that job?

#4  I read an interview with a bartender and he basically said the folks go out to smoke, and thus aren't buying as many drinks during the night.

I suppose if you have an outdoor patio where they can smoke, and drink, you'll break even. But despite what the Robin Hood movies indicate it rains a bit in Britain.

Afghanistan/South Asia
Any solution to eve teasing?
No, we are not making this up.
LAHORE: The start of any festival or public holiday seems to launch the youngsters of Lahore in a frenzy of gaiety. The holidays seem to bring hordes of boys who congregate at all hot spots of the city in search of the fairer sex.
"Mahmoud, look! An ankle!"
The girls, not to be outdone, dress themselves in attractive attire to leave the boys jelly-kneed and other ladies green with envy.
"Holy moly, Achmed, she's a sultry wench! Go on, ask her out. Go on!"
"Well... Okay... [Pause]... Damn! She turned me down!"
"Well, then, throw this acid in her face!"
However this gathering of boys looking for the 'forbidden fruit' is a source of great concern to the whole nation. The boys' pursuit of girls at times ends up being annoying and degrading to the opposite sex.
"Oh ick, Fatima, it's that Achmed again. He's such a loser, he can't even recite the Koran! If only Mahmoud would look at me, just once!"
The act of eve teasing is widely condemned and considered a nuisance by the public. Mukarram Khan, a lawyer, said he and his family could not go out to shop because of eve teasers standing in every market where women shop, adding that sometimes, taking pride in their numbers, they would intentionally row with a male member of the family. Mr Khan while narrating an incident said a group of eve teasers upset his family in Defence Market and when he tried to stop them, some of the youngsters quarrelled with him and fled.
"Jes' you wait, mister! I'm gonna go git my pa, and he has an AK!"
Fatima Khan, an employee of Message Communication, said that the boys should respect the opposite sex, as morality demands it, adding that they should not be oblivious to the fact that they have families too. Ms Khan said parents play a pivotal role and should keep an eye on their children when it comes to going out with out reason.
Especially since you can get stoned in Pakland.

#2  Its not all that long ago that most women in that part of the world spent their whole lives confined in purdah. No wonder the young men are over-reacting -- think how Saudi boys would respond to a similar provocation>
